hey i took out the factory radio and mfd screen from my astra, so i could set up a comp.
i didnt get that far though as after a week with no radio, 7 ecn codes appeared and the battery went dead AND wont hold a charge.
the dealership maintain i damaged the ecu and want me to pay to fix it. i had 2 codes before i took out the radio which the dealership claimed to fix.
can the removal of the radio really do that much damage or is he talking out his arse?
do you know what the codes were?

i guess i should warn you-- i have a mitsubishi, and have done very little work with chevy's, or GM's international brands(but i really want to import a holden ute ssv)....
the ABS errors should have nothing to do with the radio. i don't know of any sensible reason that a car maker would run the ABS through a card radio.. but to be fair, many auto makers do things that are not sensible(GM killed pontiac right as they started using the aussie rwd platform...)
the ambient air temp sensor could be related-- some radios could control a secondary display that could display this info, but it is highly unlikely..
and the wrong key should have nothing to do with it either...
i don't know about the laws in your area, but in the US, there is a law that states that dealers need to prove that the aftermarket equipment caused the vehicle-part failure before blaming the car owner, and denying warranty coverage.. called the magnuson-moss warranty act
but at the very least, you can always take the car to a different dealership..
ya the mfd display was connected to the radio. both are plugged out. the radio "may" have been gutted to fit a mobo and a aftermarket radio. i told the dealers it wasnt working so i took it out and dumped it and the mfd which is kinda true, it was working the way i wanted it to :)
i've been in contact with opel ireland, instead of the dealership being an opel agent.
even after all this i will most def finish my project
quick update.
the garage came and collected the car to be "fixed" wednesday last. they rang me yesterday to say they had fixed it but it needed a radio and clockpod screen. he told me it was impossible to get a used one and that it would cost me €400 for the radio and €700 for the clock pod. i asked what kind of radio and he said it was the cd30 model.
he went on to say they would try and see if they could get a replacement used one on the opel exchange. contradicting his "impossible" statement
i asked him was the car running, as the battery was dead etc, he said it was and he'd ring me back today to update me on the situation with the radio and clock pod. still maintaining it was all the radios,or lack of doing in the first place.

i emailed the first guy to see if they were divorced from his car first. if it is the case i'll purchase them and try get my hands on some tech 2 to marry it to mine.
is there anywhere i buy tech 2 in ireland? of even better yet is there any one with it that i could bother for 5 mins. i'd pay for their troubles
On Astra H the screen (BID/GID/CID) acts as a gate between differnet speed CAN buses. Taking the sceen out completely and then running the car may theoretically result in various fault codes not related to entertainment or A/C system in any way.
Running the car with no headunit is OK, if it is not disabled via TECH 2 then a couple of "No communication to headunit" fault codes would be visible but these would not affect the car driveability in any way (actually you would not see any warning lights on the dash or so - these fault codes would be visible only via the dealer scanner like TECH 2).
I personally have been running the car (2007 Opel Astra OPC) with no headunit for a about a year with no probs. However taking out the screen completely is a no-no :) You may extend the wiring and relocate the screen to the roof panel.
i just got the car back today and fitted a second hand radio and screen. everything seems to be fine now so i suppose it was my bad to begin with.Quote:

thank you for even more motivation. thats what i'm trying to figure out how to fit. i dont want to jump in like a lunatic and cut up the piece and then realise it wont fit. it would help me an absolute ton if you could give me a measurements you have??? pretty please??
