    need advice with 07 holde/astra h

hey i took out the factory radio and mfd screen from my astra, so i could set up a comp.

i didnt get that far though as after a week with no radio, 7 ecn codes appeared and the battery went dead AND wont hold a charge.

the dealership maintain i damaged the ecu and want me to pay to fix it. i had 2 codes before i took out the radio which the dealership claimed to fix.

can the removal of the radio really do that much damage or is he talking out his arse?

The car may not work, but I wouldn't have expected damage.
Though I must admit, it is a great security feature - destroy the ECU so the radio thief won't steal the car.
It's more subtle than a radio failing on railway tracks.....

They used to tell you to drain carbies before "storing" the car for a while.
Some still rotate tyres; tell you to add additives and use premium petrol....

Do you think they wrecked it when they fixed the 2 codes? (What were the codes? Charging?)

The battery failing - coincidence? Is that the cause of the problem, or has the problem wrecked the battery - ie, kept a circuit energised. It's not one of those ECU controlled alternators is it (see draining carbs before storage... IMHO that is!)?

But a few things are happening. That means clever diagnosis is needed.

ya i reckon they messed it up. i sent it in with 050070 and 050072. it came back with those and 210870. the battery didnt fail then till exactly a week later

its just got worse since they went at it.

i know a fair bit about electronics, being a graduate of IT so i can call most of his bull****. when i told him i found out what the codes were he told me "we are professionals, that information you found could of been put up by anyone we know more. we're like wikipedia"
    i laughed inside so hard.

Yes - they do get paid for their stuff ups don't they?

I think you have seen enough of my ramblings about those that confuse professional with expert, and qualification with knowledge. (Last was the qual mechanic that couldn't tell me what determines engine oil pressure (big ends) & reckoned the metric kW-Nm power-torque formula is the same as for HP (5225?). I dared not query a 3rd time, but he did drop his interrogation "what is faster - torque or power?" - it seems he had to re-read... (I'd argue torque.)

But experts like wikipedia should be able to explain how a radio blows an ECU.
(I find wiki fairly accurate except for real leading edge stuff. But it's everyone's referral to MythBusters that get's me - maybe I'm not seeing the joke? (But some seem serious - like mobiles NOT attracting lightning, and AM-receptive teeth...)

Our local wrecker has special on ECUs this week - AUD$30. Unfortunately the newest Astra they list is a 1998... maybe you can hack a bit?
(LOL - that's a joke - I don't even know if they are still Delco. I think after 1996 they swung to the Opel import....)

    quick update.
the garage came and collected the car to be "fixed" wednesday last. they rang me yesterday to say they had fixed it but it needed a radio and clockpod screen. he told me it was impossible to get a used one and that it would cost me €400 for the radio and €700 for the clock pod. i asked what kind of radio and he said it was the cd30 model.

he went on to say they would try and see if they could get a replacement used one on the opel exchange. contradicting his "impossible" statement

i asked him was the car running, as the battery was dead etc, he said it was and he'd ring me back today to update me on the situation with the radio and clock pod. still maintaining it was all the radios,or lack of doing in the first place.

a quick ebay check and i got these results:
    http://motors-parts.shop.ebay.ie/Veh...=p3286.c0.m282

i emailed the first guy to see if they were divorced from his car first. if it is the case i'll purchase them and try get my hands on some tech 2 to marry it to mine.

is there anywhere i buy tech 2 in ireland? of even better yet is there any one with it that i could bother for 5 mins. i'd pay for their troubles

    Replied in your other thread...

Just one additional thought - TECH 2 is quite pricey, you would not want to buy it just to sort out the trouble codes you have. But I believe there should be some guys on astra owners club that should help with TECH 2 diagnostics.
