Powering ELM327 Cable without a car?

    Heya,

I have an ELM327 usb-serial cable. It powers up fine when I connect it in my car (ie I get a power LED turning on) and works as expected. I'm trying to do a bit of dev with it though, and I don't want to be sitting in my car for that [I don't need to query the ECU for anything... just ELM stuff like reset, set BR, etc].

So I tried to power the cable outside of the car, but I can't seem to get this to work... the power LED doesn't even turn on. I applied 12VDC to the pin 16, and grounded pins 4,5. Does anyone have any advice?

edit: this works fine if you know how to read a pinout and aren't an idiot
