Dumb question maybe but need help with EGT

Hello, I don't know anything about this stuff but I found this form while searching for alternatives to traditional gauges for the 2000 ford excursion 7.3L diesel I just bought. The problem is that there isn't a stock EGT sensor. I am wondering if there is a way to hack/rig an EGT sensor to report through the OBDII port so I can use a $20 type k thermocouple, cheap wireless ELM327 and a $5 DashCommand app on my iPhone to have a full set of gauges. The only solution I've found available is the PLX products, but that doesn't provide any cost savings over traditional pillar gauges and I'm wondering if there's some sneaky way to do the same thing and avoid paying for expensive hardware. Any help is appreciated.

well, if the truck didn't come with one then there is a strong chance the ecu or ecu's software doesn't support it. usually what would happen in your case is an egt sensor would be mounted with a guage that had a 0-5v output that could be tied into a datalogger for tuning purposes, but would require the tuner to act as the mediator between sensor and ecu. and ecu will never actually see sensor because it was not made with that input, and software was not written for that p.i.d.

I have the pillar gauges with EGT. I drilled the sensor into one of the exhaust manifolds for pre-turbo monitoring. I've never checked to see what the output of the thermo-couple is but maybe it could be translated into something useful if you just added the thermo couple? I'm sure someone has tried, maybe Google will help.

I'm pretty sure you won't get anything from the stock ECU. My Auto Enginuity software records almost 500 PID's from the truck and I don't recall seeing EGT's...

Anyway, MAArcher, here's a site I found on thermocouples, maybe there is something there that can help you: http://thesensorconnection.com/applications/faq.shtml
