    Cruise Control Question

Just wondering if anyone knows this, i don't know much about cars so

Does the ECU control and keep the values for cruise control or is it kept on a seperate computer?

It would be nice to have cruise control which acts like normal cruise control but is activated via my computer - Just a thought.

Depends on the car. Some of them use vacuum to maintain your speed, putting it out of reach of influence of your car PC. The others that DO use the ECM won't be all that willing to allow you to input your own values to set a speed, unless the AutoTap or other software gives you that ability. The thing is, those programs provide an interface command structure to the actual programming language of the ECM, and last time I checked, none of the auto companies take kindly to a private entity trying to break their proprietary property.

In the end, you can monitor your speed, but it may be next to impossible to set one of your own with currently available (private sector) technology.

Figures, would be nice tho. Figure they use the same ECM on each cavalier they make and the cruise control is just a $200 option when you buy the car.

Heh, that WOULD be cool, but then again, speed change areas are usually pretty obvious, and that's one thing you would likely be better off leaving under your control rather than forgetting about it and letting the computer do it for you.

Well, i was thinking about cruise control for the interstate and having it turn off when yuo hit the brake (not sure how one would go about getting that from ECU) just like the factory control but setting it on the carputer - cool idea but would not be worth the money to implement tho

Well, here's a different take on the other idea though: What if it could be connected to GPS and kept track of speed limits in certain areas, then alerted you if you went over by... oh say... five miles an hour? Might be nifty.

That is a good idea, I always wanted a radar that detects how fast people are going, then give the local police departments the reports on their units. GPS speed would be nice but I would find it annoying. Would be good if you had a kid, you could see how fast they were going and log it to a file and make sure they weren't racing :-D

I had thought about it with some kind of device on signs that tells the car how fast it could go, but with GPS it would be even cooler. Would be a pain in the butt for the roads you drive every day tho.
