OBD-II set-up

I've got my obd-ii to serial cable, I've got my software installed, now what do I need? Do I need a decoder or something like that. I'm getting kinda lost on all this.

errm u dont mean u just got a cable straight from your odb2 port to ur pc, with no hardware inbetween?
