yes, there are, they're a different format though, i forget the code. Every car thats sold in america is required to have OBD.

OBDII is federally mandated, it is on ALL '96 & up US vehicles. But it is quite limited.
This aftermarket (non-dealer) hardware & software will work on ANY US OBDII vehicle.
Again, it is limited, u will only see basic stuff: rpm, mph, air/fuel, o2, but not much more.
As far as DTC's (Diagnostic Trouble Codes) is concerned, you will see all code numbers (P0446, P1135 etc) In most cases you will only get a fault explanation for the "P0..." codes only. The "P0..." codes are codes related to the fed.mandated OBDII, you legally "must" be able to see them.
However, the "P1..." type codes are "manufacture specific". You will see the code number, but not a description of the fault. Reason being is that these aftermarket tools are generic to all vehicles (OBDII)
If you wanted to get more specific values for a certain car, you'd need to buy the manufacturer specific scan tools. (big bucks)
Additionally, these aft.markt. scan tools ONLY get into the ECU or PCM (engine computer). You are not able to get into any other computers (i.e.:ABS, Body, Air Bag, etc)

A more basic answer to your question: yes, it'll work on your Toyota.
I use the harrison stuff with my pda at work (Lexus), just to pull codes.
Again, quite limited...if I hadn't allready had a pda, I wouldn't have spent the money.

Depending on the scan tool you can get into the other computer modules. I have a VAG-COM for my VW and I can get into airbags, ABS, Body, Radio, Climate Control, etc.

I stand correctly, some aft.markt. scan tools will get into other modules..snap-on etc. but again, quite expensive.

To clarify what I said, I can only get into the diagnostics for my airbags, ABS, Body, Radio, Climate Control, etc. I can't doing anything cool like control my locks or windows.

I think with BMW/Mini there are some people on this forum that have hacked their cars to control a lot of stuff.
