Replacing OBC from a BMW with a LCD screen?

    Here's the deal...

The plan is to install a carputer in my car where the interface for the car's on board computer are already. It's a '97 BMW M3 if that means anything to anyone. (I couldn't tell the difference between a BMW computer programming and a game boy. Hopefully one of you knows the deal)

The computer displays various minor car problems, ie washer fluid low, coolent level low, etc. It also displays the outside temperature.

Is there software I can get that would allow a carPC to read that information and display it on a computer screen?

    Why lose it, keep it.

Put your headunit in the glove, move the Climate control down and put screen in the top.

Your slook snice, but keeping the head unit in the glove box would be REALLY annoying for me. I had thought about tossing the OBC in the glove box though. Putting the screen up high is a really good idea. Was is difficult to move the climate control down to the sunglass holder spot?

If you read through the rest of the other thread you will see my comments on that one.

If your headunit is removeable (like mine) you can put the facia down where the cigarette lighter is. That's where mine will go when I can get around to it.

I've got the ASC control down there. It's also where the power swtich to the computer and maybe a touchpad will end up. (At least that's the plan.)

It's a great idea though! Do you know there's enough room? That it wouldn't hit the transmisison?

The hope of the whole thread by the way was that somone used BMW's programming (hopefully it's open source so someone could have done this) to make a computer act like the OBC head unit. Sort of like how I can play Nintendo games on my computer.

Anything like that? (Excuse me if Varan or CarX do exactly that. I'm still researching those things since you gave me the idea)

I also have the ASC and the power button there. However will probably move those to somewhere else.

From my small tests there should be enough room. (I have a manual BTW)

I have a trackball in the ashtray

Wouldn't want a touchpad in front of the gearstick.

    That's good stuff!

I was going to replace one of the asktrays with a speaker so I could hear the computer tell me directions to my destination (doing this for a GPS system) . Putting a pointing device in there too is a great idea!

I was going to have a pointing device in front of the shifter only to use when the car was stopped and something was going wrong with th touchscreen. Sort of a back up. The screen should allow me to interface with the programming I want to use well enough.

But putting a trackball back further....that's good stuff!
