Is there a new ODB standard?

I read somewhere that the 2006+ vehicles are supposed to support a new data standard. seeing as I have a 2006 Toyota Solara I wanted to make sure before I dropped money on an interface that wouldn't work.

    Anyone hear anything about it?

I have found you an argument; I am not obliged to find you an understanding.

It is not a new "standard" but a faster abetter way to do what it already does. The CAN interface (controller area network) is a different way for the different systems to communicate with each other. The "old" standard was a simple serial interface. To communicate with the "new" standard cars you will need a CAN enabled interface. Most scanners can be retrofitted with an adapter that will allow them to with these vehicles.

You can read about it here.

No, it is going to be the same. The new parts of OBDII is something called Mode $06, its not exactly new, but it isn't used much.

Here is an article my teacher wrote on it.

So i just wasted several minutes of perfectly good time and nowhere in that article does it ever say about it becoming a standard in 2006 or any other point of time. Care to give some useful links?
