    Building OBD-II Controller

I have done some research ( )on this, and have a circuit diagram but which chip do I use. The ELM323SM or the ELM323P? Short easy question.

Surface mount chips are the tiny little ones with almost no "legs" to them. They require special equipment (mainly a toaster oven, and special solder). You also need some amount of skill in placing the components.

Other then the surface mounting, and the related size difference, there is no difference in the chip.

Oh, and the Surface mount type wil absolutely require a printed circuit board. I don't think there is a way to do it otherwise. I don't know how you are doing it, so I thought I might throw that in there.
