Connecting a PIC to the ELM327 is fine with me... I guess I just need to sit down and do a little research on how to interface the two together in a standalone unit.

I know C - Assembly I'd have to learn. But I'd love to be able to build this out of parts that are dirt cheap - which would lean towards using an cheap off the shelf microprocesser and force me to learn assembly I suppose.
If you've never done a PIC/stamp project, you're gonna have about $100 in start-up costs no matter what. The expense of any platform like this will look like:
- PIC/stamp cost
- PIC blaster or i2c interface
- external parts (resistors, caps, RS232 chip)
- breadboard and wires (HIGHLY recommended versus blowing through perf board)
- _time_ (this is a big one, it may take you longer than you think to get the dev environment running)
Don't discount eBay for stuff like the PIC programmer. You won't need anything fancy for what you're looking at doing.
I got my OBDpro and have figured out how to make some interesting changes to the radio & amplifier in my CTS from the computer... I also have ordered an AVR microcontroller and some prototype components... This ought to be fun! I'll update the list if I make some good progress.
