What protocol do Auterra,Autotap,AutoEnginuity,MultiplexEngineering & Mobydic use ?

What protocol are all the hardware interfaces from these vendors based on ?
    Auterra
    Autotap
    AutoEnginuity
    MultiplexEngineering
    Mobydic

Is it ELM or J2534 or something else ? If something else then what ?

Multiplex-Engineering in their online faq specifically say that they do not support ELM, but they dont say what exactly they are using.

The mOByDic 2600 uses the following protocols:

    ISO15765-4 (CAN)
    ISO14230-4 (KWP2000)
    ISO9141-2
    J1850 VPW
    J1850 PWM

ELM is an interface, not a protocol. J2534, from my limited knowledge of it, is not necessarily a protocol either, but a standard designed to allow single applications to interface with multiple protocols easily. Joey can go into further details on this.

True. To use precise terms, the original poster is asking about the Application Programmer's Interface (API) or device driver compatibility.

According to the websites, some are supported by PCMScan and some by Digimoto. None are standard PassThru (J2534) devices, and none indicate ELM compatibility. Most of those use a proprietary driver, but I don't own all of them so I'm not 100% positive. Usually these questions are a good test for the vendor. If they don't have telephone support or can't answer questions to your satisfaction, you may want to look elsewhere.

yes I was asking about interface(elm,j2534) rather than protocols(iso, vpw,...).
so they are neither elm nor j2534. should be most likely proprietary then.

Proprietery is a tricky term... AutoEnginuity actually uses the interface from Multiplex ~ Multiplex offers an interface anyone can integrate into. If you consider the multiplex interface proprietery then you must also consider the ELM proprietery. Some interfaces allow 3rd party applications to integrate into (the mOByDic 2600, the ELM, even the Multiplex). One main difference with the Multiplex is a lot of software developers will key the unit to the software so it can not be used by other applications... this just does not occur with the mOByDic and the ELM.

J2534 is not an interface either, it is a standard that the guys from Drew Tech have utilized within their hardware. The only hardware I have ever heard of being built around the J2534 standard is their Cardaq and their Mongoose (although I am sure there are other high end tools utilizing J2534). There are quite a few hardware manufacturers out there who use the ELM chip, because it is so low cost.

If you are looking for hardware options that utilize the ELM chip or the J2534 standard, google should result in a good amount of options.
