    OBD-2.com and TekMate

    www.obd-2.com
    www.tekmatetools.com

these two seem to be least talked about obd tools here. Is there any reason why ?

To me it looks like obd-2.com is pretty good. They even have enhanced PIDs for quite a few cars already in the price of the product.

The only other thing that caught my eye about TekMate is that it says "Manually send commands to the vehicle's ECM". Wonder what exactly that means.

I think what they allow you to do is hand type in commands for queries that may be specific for your vehicle. This could be handy if you understood the data returning (would allow you to query specific PIDs only your vehicle supports). TekMate is based off of the ELM chip and was designed by the guys at AutoEnginuity.

OBD-2.com is definitely not talked about much, I have little idea why.

    That's what I suspected.
Typically is it something descriptive (like ATF_Temp, Oil_Pressure,..) or symbolic (like $29, $P06,..). Either way I guess one would need that information and the interpretation of the result also from the manufacturer to begin with, correct ?

Yes, different vehicles could use the same PID and provide different sensor values (most are somewhat consistant, some PIDs are standard and can only provide a value for a specific sensor). You can find a lot of information regarding PID enhanced requests for certain vehicles/sensors on Google, but yes you will also need to know how to convert the resulting data into readable information. Just a bit of math .

I've had the obd-2 cable for 2 years now and it has worked great with several different programs, in addition to the one that comes with it. The cable has some advantages that others do not - like, the plug is very low profile with the cable coming off the side. It doesn't stick out at all, making it ideal for a permanent installation. The cable is very good but expensive compared to the ELM based ones.

The software is very complete and sophisticated, but not very user-friendly. It is very difficult to use from a 7 inch screen and the dashboard view is primitive, at best.

I think those are the reasons (cost and software) that it is not talked about much here. Alex Peper knows his stuff when it comes to OBD but reading that guy's website gives me a headache.

can you tell me which programs worked fine with obd-2.com ? and have you tried the latest v1.4 ?

can you also tell me something about the speed of the tool ?

Since we are at a total loss of information on this tool any inputs from people like you who have used it by prove quite helpful. Thanks.

Actually, I am using the OBD-2 cable with two programs - ecuExplorer for data logging, trouble code reading and ecu resetting, and ecuEdit for live data dashboard. These two programs use the Subaru Select Monitor (SSM) protocol, specific to Subarus, not the generic OBDII protocol. The cable works good for this protocol and can normally log 8 parameters at 150 ms update rate. The SSM protocol has a higher update rate than the generic protocol.

I don't use the OBD-2 software for the reasons I listed before. I haven't tried the 1.4 version. I've tried a few other SSM logging programs and the cable works with them as well.
