I am a little confused. Do you need a car pc to run all of this stuff in your car?

    Have you seen http://plxdevices.com

Seems like you just need to hook up there OBDII scanner module and then attach display modules to that and you can make your own custom gauges.

Do you need a separate scanner module for each display? If so, that could get expensive.

This is a project I am interested in doing, but it seems like at this point, there is not a great solution.

I'm doing something similar, except I'm taking the computer out of the loop and using a microcontroller to interface between the ELM device and small LCD displays. You could potentially use a uC to control the gauges that Prevch linked.

When someone has a cluster installed and working I would LOVE a step-by-step tutorial. I am honestly really lost by all of this so more info would be appreciated.

I don't really get how it works........

If you're just after the display of dials and not any of the other stuff, consider DashCommand. The PPE boys have been working on adding features to it of late and a new version is due out any moment. One of their motivators has been to get a multiple-page version going so we can display information and cycle through differentp ages - driven in some ways by the screens available in the new Nissan GTR.

You also mention the scripts feature - not yet available in DashCommand but apparently comming. Scripts can only 'manipulate' existing J1979 data - it doesn't give you the ability to read custom PIDs. But we've put in a feature request for that ability. I for one wanted to be able to read the Reverse Park Distance values out of the Park Aid Module for example, or some of the hidden Climate Control values (in-cabin temp, blower motor speed etc) - and they all require custom PIDS.

This does deviate a little from what this discussion is about - an instrument cluster replacement - but not by too much.

Has anyone looked into the parallax propeller chip for driving digital gauges? They can do fairly complex graphics on VGA screens and don't have the slow startup time of a regular computer.

Came across someone making a gauge cluster like this and never saw anyone follow up on it... I thought it was interesting so I made a mock of it the best I could. Anyone interested in using this I could post the file. Let me know.

That looks rather busy, IMO. Gauges should be clear and easy to read at a glance. For show, that gauge looks cool, but when you're driving, you don't want to be searching and deciphering what you're looking for.

    Simple is IMO better.
