you dont need drivers. Just software to read and write to the comm port where your elmScan is connected to.

It is a serial port device. No driver is needed to communicate with it but you do need software that will talk to it and decipher the data it sends out. There are several free and trial things available for download. Search for them and try some of them. The software CD that came with mine just had some of these free versions on it. I can't recommend any one in particular.

oh i see.. well it's not really "talking" to mine right now. i guess i'll look for a usb to serial driver somewhere..
actually, i've been searching around and i can't seem to find a driver that works... do you guys recommend any?
::edit:: actually, i think i found one... http://www.mct.com.tw/driver.html
edit: nope, doesn't work.
If you want anyone to be able to effectively help you, you have to understand the problem well enough to explain it to us. It sounds to me like your problem right now is that you don't have a working serial port. That is totally unrelated to the Elmscan hardware, which is what you asked for help with.
We can't guess what your hardware setup is. You will have to tell us. Look at my signature. It is an easy way of listing my setup with every post. If your PC doesn't have a built in serial port and you are using an add-on USB to serial, you need to get the driver that is made for it. See if there is a brand name on it and start from there looking for drivers. I have one that uses "Prolific" drivers. You can use Hyperterminal to test serial communications.
Good luck.

i'm sorry about that. well, at first i thought it was the elmscan5 itself.. then i found out that i needed the usb to serial driver. i tried the prolific drivers and they didn't help. i tried microsoft drivers and they didn't help either... i just went around the web searching, installing, uninstalling and trying to find out what might be the problem. basically, i've been trying to do this from a vaio laptop that was lying around. my setup pc for the car is going to be an aopen pandora mp915-b.
i'll try the hyperterminal.. either that or i'll buy a different usb to serial that comes with the drivers cd. (the one i got was from quack.)
Sounds like Shidoken has the ELMscan5 USB version.
I had the same issue.
The problem is that the ELMscan5 USB version comes with a USB cable but the software on the included cd is still asking for a COM port with no selection for a USB port given.
There are USB com port drivers on the cd but it is not explained very well unless you open the ELMscan5USB Quickstart guide.pdf in the documentation directory of the cd.
Here is the location of a the most recent virtual com port driver for it
http://www.scantool.net/scantool/downloads/drivers/
Extract the files to a directory, plug in your elmscan5 unit to the vehicle, then to the usb port, then when windows askes for a driver select "search in following location and browse to the directory where you extracted the files to. After installation is finished, go into Devicemanager in control panel and look for usb com port in the ports section and note the com port number in the () - this will be the com port to select in elmscantools.

I just want to point out that all of our scan tools ship with a printed Quick Start guide, which explains the simple steps needed to install the USB drivers and locate the number of the virtual COM port. We even rolled the drivers into an installer, which runs directly off the CD and installs the drivers automatically, without the need to browse for the drivers.
It sounds like in this case, the QSG got lost in the transfer.![]()
