Ok I know I am a noob here but I had to post it...![]()
i know... i mean obd 2 in the title
hi.. new to this forum, just wondered if it is possible to connect my car obd 2 port to my in car computer, and have it display stuff like rpm and engine temp on the computer display? and if so, how and where to get the necessary parts and wires,
Chrysler stratus 2.0 Le
Pentium 2 MHz (soon to be updated)
300 GB hdd
7" touch display
120w surround amplifier
i have tried to search for a software and cable but i can only find those tools that connects to the obd 2 port, looking for a software and cable that allows me to display readouts from the engine directly onto the display as i am driving, if it is possible
If you want a ready-made display, try ScanGauge. It hooks up to the OBD Port and gives you the readings you need.
Do you want to build your own instrument display? Or do you have a touchscreen display in your central dash area and you want get data from the engine to display there?
If you want to make your own gauges/instrument cluster, you're on your own, at least for now. Only a few people have tackled this and so there are no solutions already out there.
If you want to display data in your entertainment display, several folks have created plug-ins, etc. for the "front end" software that runs those things. This should be fairly easy for you to add. Check out the threads on adding OBD-II to front end displays/software.
If this doesn't meet your needs and you really want to roll your own, you will need to do quite a few things. First, you'll need some sort of hardware interface. This will communicate with the vehicle and then make that data available to the PC. One of the best articles I've seen on doing this is linked in this thread:

There are lots of other choices as well. Check out any of the sites that offer software-based SCAN TOOLS. You can get the hardware and specs to write your own software to read the data.
Once you have all this figured out, you can then integrate the data into your application to display what you want.
As you can see, no easy solutions. It's a lot of work!! HTH. . .
found out its obd 1, not obd 2, just want it to display rpm, engine temp and general errormessages on my onboard computer display
i am still looking for cables that allowes me to connect the obd 1 to either the com or usb connector on the computer, also, would be nice to get reccomandation on software to use
it doesnt bother me that its a lot to do, gives me something to do when i got time to spare
