Question Is My Volvo S40 2002 OBD2 compliant?

Ok so was told by and eBay seller that my car was compliant, sent tool, cant get it to read codes, garage had no problems reading codes etc.

    Car is:

Volvo S40 2.0L Turbo 2002 Petrol UK Model.

    Tool i bought was this:

    LINKY

All it does is connect then go through the 4 protocols:
    ISO-1941-2,KWP2000,VPW and PWM

But says it cant find any...

    I need some help.

Any vehicle after 1996 is OBD-II complient.

The garage was able to read it because they have a dedicated tool for it.

The volvo might have an advanced protocal, much like the VWs. You should still be able to connect.

Try the tool on another car and see if you have the same issues...if so, you have issues with your car. If it doesn't work, it's the tool.

I think UK did not mandate OBD II until 2003 or so (does someone know the exact date?)

If the volvo was compatible it would have scanned fine under the ISO protocol, I would venture that this volvo is most likely not OBD II compliant. There was another thread where the poster could not get his 2002 Volvo to work either

The UK was required to be OBD2 compliant in 2001 (petrol vehicles), however this was 2004 for diesel vehicles.

Is your car a diesel mountainmachine?

You shouldn't be having an issue, unless the tool is faulty.

Best bet is to have a check of the pins present in your plug - have a look here
for details of determining the protocol that you car uses (should be ISO).

    I hope that this helps!

P.S. To clear up from the above, EU cars were required to be EOBD/OBD2 compliant from 2001.
