Extreme Temp Hard Drive Experiences

Brutal morning, hey? Stayed at my girlfriend's so I couldn't garage my car and the hard drive was sloooooooow at spooling up. I was waiting for the turn from Blackfoot onto Deerfoot and had to turn my car off/on to reboot the computer and then I had music for the rest of the drive to work.

My Vertex started up with no issue, everything is again nice and quick as usual (-30*C).
This is really good news for me, as i've been searching for something this reliable for quite sometimes. I'm about to jump and get another one for my brother's car, but i'll wait a few more days to see if it can stand it for a long period of time.

Nah, the morning drive wasnt so bad. The city did a surprisingly good job at clearing all the main roads from the snowstorm. Im surprised you managed to get your normal HDD working though, because none of the standard drives Ive ever used got warm enough during my typical 45 min morning drive to be usable on days like today.

Good to hear that the Vertex series works, maybe Ill keep an eye out for those to see if they go on sale. We still have a few more cold days, so Ill keep testing. But I suspect that unforunately, I might have to get rid of the OCZ Summit and just go back to using my EE25. Resume from hibernation times with the new SSD wasnt noticeably faster anyways.

Yeah the vertex is a bit pricey, but they're working awesome. I'm using s3 standby instead of hibernation, but that shouldn't make too much of difference. I didn't have any stuttering issues.

Theres a 30G Vertex on sale at Newegg for $100 after rebate. Any complaints about the Vertex for CarPC use? Im thinking about pulling the trigger...or maybe wait until boxing day for a deal on a 60G.

I wonder how the Intel, Kingston, or Corsair SSDs perform in the cold, anyone with experience? I guess at this point we can scratch off the Patriot Warp and OCZ Summit off the winter SSD list.

Have not tried the others, but the intel is way too expensive.
edit: thus far, absolutely no complaints, i couldn't be happier. If you're in no rush you should wait a few days to see how mine performs, just incase.

I know you guys up North have colder temps... but for us more southern but still on the cold side... $30 to $40 (USD) for the same size SATA

or

larger (250 gb)for not much more money $35 to $50

Yea unfortunately for us guys up north, you gotta pay to play. I can always stick with my trusty EE25, so Im not really in a rush for an SSD. Now that Ive experieced SSD, I think it's overrated. Im curious how the Vertex will perform in -40C, as my goal for a truly ruggedized carpc is to have it operating in those conditions.

I've ran wheel bearing hd for years in my system. they're great, they work, but in extreme cold they're just not as reliable as i would like.

I too am curious about how my vertex will perform under -40*C.

In my opinion if i could get my HD to run under -40*C i have a perfect carputer with S3 standby.

Crap, another point to chime in about. Like I mentioned before, Im running an OCZ Summit SSD as my main boot drive then a Seagate EE25 automotive grade disk drive to store my music. Although the EE25 works in -30C (much better than the SSD actually), the problem is that in such cold temps, the EE25 takes longer to be detected/spin up when booting because the bearings are viscous. The Summit is detected instantly, and the system basically boots up before the EE25 is detected.

Looks like maybe Ill have to find an external enclosure to put the EE25 in.
