CPU's can run at 65C all day, and I have been building and clocking pc's since the trim pot overclocking days without ever having let the smoke out. They usually just lock up, then cool down, reset BIOS, and reboot.

On my board I thought it was bad at first, but it turned out I needed both the 20/24 pin plug as well as the 4 pin cpu power plug to get it to POST, but I had always thought that was CPU dependent so was not needed with a 35watt CPU. Turns out I needed both. I assume you used both cables from your supply to MOBO too.

If I remember you choose a 45 watt CPU? maybe that stock heatsink fan was weak for a 45 watt chip?

Yep ive got the 45w cpu and i do have the extra 4 pin power plug plugged in.will try another power supply today just incase the 4pin plug is the problem.

Its possible that the heatsink isnt good enought...but im sure in testing and normal running this rig has only ever been just idleing along..no heat...and its winter here too now

Need to get these parts checked somwhere locally i think.

So i rang mini-box.com.au today and spoke to old mate there..was a pretty good phone call.dude is totally stumped on the cpu/board issue...but its looking like the original board may have toasted the cpu when it croaked.not a great situation but he isnt yet convinced the cpu is dead..also said he has never seen a dead cpu...he is thinking possible late model board incompatabilitys or bios issue...but he is looking into it as the rest of my parts checkout o.k.
Question...So if the old board did cook my cpu, should a warranty cover any parts that were taken out by the board malfunction?

    Ethically yes, but greedily no.

Verdict is in...cpu is now faulty but the board is o.k.
Im guessing one took out the other...
Mini-box.com.au has offered me a i5 replacement and will post back a working carpc with a additional com port daughter board and new heatsink and fan (per my request)
Sad to see the i7 go but im happy with the service.so glad a shopped from a actual store and not just from ebay that time.

An i5 is still a good choice. Is it a 35w or 45w chip?
