I had this in a WRX Bezal and it ran well for a few years then the backlighting went on it.
I also extended/relocated the IR receiver on it.
I can confirm you can see a picture on the screen when you shine a flashlight on it.

Probably a easy fix, but I have no need for this since I got a Pioneer HU now.
I originally purchased this here for over $700.

Greetings all

I just got a 05 Sonata. Have to log @ 800 miles a week so I want a comfortable and usable system. Been trying to plan my next move, but need some advice. So here goes:

Have the factory Tape/CD/Changer head unit, which has no simple iPod > Changer cable available for less than $80. If I am spending that much I might as well get a new head unit.

So for my needs/wants: I am a web developer by day, and a DJ at night. That said, all my music is mostly 320K or Aiff files all tagged up with nice artwork. I also find myself on long drives having to pull over from time to time, open laptop, and tether thru my 3GS to fix some emergency or give tech support.

Looked at the PioneerApp radio, and while mostly I want BlueTooth calling, playback of my tunes thru dock connector, and a bigger nav screen, the AppRadio has some poor reviews, and lack of functionality without an iPhone (or Android now) is a turn off.

Thought about just getting a simple headunit with rear aux input for dock connector, and for now using iPhone but switch to iPad for bigger screen etc. However Sonata interior is not very conducive to this without covering up the headunit area, making using BT controls on stereo useless for calls. Mostly then thinking, I don't want to lug iPad on every trip in car, and if I have iPhone already, what is the point. However, I do think this is the best bet for keeping resale value of car and not locking me into any specific phone/computer, so I still might just do this.

Then, without knowing anything about this whole MacCar scene, I started thinking. I knew there was 7" multitouch screens available based on AppRadio having one. Started googling and wound up here.

Now, at the moment I am torn between using the Mimics system or doing a proper MacCar custom build. I think Mimics is almost perfect, I just don't like the non rotating issue for the apps. I realize I can install extensions etc on phone to adjust, and use certain apps that support landscape. Still not 100% convinced.

However, what I really want now, is Snow Leopard (or more likely Lion) in my ride. Make use of that multitouch screen and do a proper install. I want to be able to use my iPhone as a mouse/keyboard, or get a BT keyboard, be able to do Facetime / iChat vid calls / screenshare etc. Why not? Do this thing right.

My biggest #1 concern about doing a real MacCar install tho... How do I get Bluetooth calling working on the computer? Well, one way is via my Google Voice number, which I do most of my calling on anyway. However for my normal cell #... How do I get so I can answer calls on the screen instead of via my phone? I see all the GPS and Nav solutions, but am confused on the BT stuff.

So, that said, I have a black macbook 2ghz Core 2 duo w 3gb Ram siting here with a busted battery, keyboard and lcd. Currently use it hooked to a DVi monitor and BT keyboard, and permanently plugged in. Was gonna upgrade that machine to a Mini soon anyway, so I have a modable Mac to use for this.

I am thinking I could make a sweet mount for the mbp under the front passenger seat, where it gets airflow via the vent under there. Or in the trunk. Then run the power adapter that they sell on here, and output the video to a DVi or VGA connection and run to a Lilliput. Should be pretty simple? However I guess I have to also install an amp and rewire my speakers, adding another chunk of change to the project. So I am torn still.

Lastly. There seems to be a lot of options for car apps to run. However most of them seem abandoned and / or incomplete. What is the currently best supported / feature full option out there?

Suggestions? Comments? Ideas? Scrap the MBP idea and get a Mini? Do the AppleTV mod that the other poster has started on?

Finding those damn gremlins

I am trying to chase an on-going issue that has baffled me for a LONG time. Hopefully, the smart people on the forum will be able to point me to where I should be looking...

I will describe issue by taking us on a step-by-step of an event:

1. Start up Car
2. Computer starts (Fans audible)
3. BIOS displays
4. GRUB displays
5. Crash/lock-up or something that causes system to halt
6. Hit the shut-off switch (which is on the ACC line)
7. Wait the 2+ minutes for the system to totally shutdown (fans off)
8. Hit switch
9. Computer *starts* (fans audible)
10. Nothing
11. Repeat #7, except wait 10+ minutes
12. Hit Switch
13. Computer starts (Fans audible)
14. BIOS displays
15. GRUB displays
16. Working system

A side note: after #5 other things stop working as well. Specifically, my rear camera and the switch tied into my GPS unit (see my worklog on that) -- both of which are tied into the ACC line.

There's 2 identied problems -- they system locking up and whatever you want to call the 2nd event. Today's question is on the 2nd event. I'm not sure how the system locking up is linked to my reverse camera stopping working.

So, any ideas???

BTW: I am using an M3-ATX as my DC-DC adapter.

Hi All,

To confirm InstantFM Music by ADS Tech (RDX-155) works out of the box in RR.

Cheap cost me about $19 posted.

Still to test in the car with an aftermarket antenna connected. Will update.

Reception is Very Very good so far running on the laptop with the factory antenna given by ADS Tech. Picks up all the stations my other radio has troubles with.

P.s. some configuration changes were needed in Windows 7 under sound to get it working. By default it was disabled and output to wrong speakers were selected.

The problem that I am having is tha the bluetooth mic tha came wih the unit is a completly garbage :/ I also test the Garmin Bluetooth and I got the same garbage quality :/ people are always complaning that they cant hear me well, if i close the mic to my mounth then it work well, but I dont want that, I want to place the mic on the rear mirror but wih this mic that is impossible :/...

Can someone please tell me what other mic can I use and get good call quality?

Looking at motherboards at the moment and I'm in two minds what to go for. I'm currently running an old asus at3iont-i board, but before I start the installation in the car I'm thinking about buying a current spec board.

Choices at the moment are the AT5IONT-I with the nvidia ION gpu or the ZOTAC NM10-DTX WiFi, I guess the question I'm asking is it worth the extra �40 to go DDR3 and Nvidia ION GPU?

My CarPC will be based around Windows 7 with Ride Runner and the DFX 5.x skin.

What are my options for power?

Fairly new to Car pc's and have been reading a lot, but stuck on what way to go with for power.

Right now I have a Double Din, EQ, crossover hooked up to 3 amps 2 subs and 2 sets of 6.5 separates . The largest amp is 1500 watts for my subs then I have a 4 channel 600 watt for the front set of 6.5 separates then another 400 watt amp for a rear set of 6.5 separates. The vehicle is a Yukon and I've already upgraded the battery to a yellow top AND have 0 awg from the batter to my distribution block for the amps so my power seems fine, but I do have the occasional light dim when at full power during heavy bass tracks.

I have read most people use M4 or Opus and keep the load under 250 watts, but I just ready a review on an soundblaster external xfi and the guys has his carputer in the back of the truck connected via a 1000 watt power inverter.

Since I already have a huge draw on my current battery should I consider a 2nd batter, upgraded alternator, or both?

Also what are the advantages of running the pc from a power inverter? Since the yukon already has power in the back truck via a cigarette lighter connection if I used that it would allow me to connect an inverter and avoid having to redo my center console to mount the pc.

Questions on Hybrid Sleep with OPUS 320 and Zotac MB.

I was wondering what the requirements are to get hybrid sleep to work. My understanding is that when activate this option (which I did in Win 7) everything should come on instantly. It seems that even with that option selected, its hibernating instead. I know it cant be a power issue per say, because the Car PC is a fairly large dedicated battery (Kinetik HC2000). When using hybrid sleep, does it require 12V to be active? I have 55 plus USB devices, all of are mainly powered off of Hubs with a power supply. Now the PC controls these supplies via a relay off the 12v rail. Could it be that because these items go off of independent power, the PC just puts it into hibernation instead when the power is lost to those items? I mean hibernation isnt slow (7 seconds), but i would really like instant on. Also, is hybrid sleep motherboard dependent? Maybe I have an option wrong in the BIOS? What would i be looking for?

Any advice would be helpful, thanx!

help with canbus to ibus

hi i have a 2004 range rover with the bmw ibus system, just in the middle of my car pc and just sorting out what i want to work with it, i am using ride runner with the range rover skin by matt stevenson. i want to use the late steering wheel controls as the have more buttons but they are canbus so looking for advice on what to use to get them to work but also i want them to wort with the factory system as well found this chap on youtube who has got the buttons working on the later screen also canbus... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u56QR...eature=related, i have the same screen and swapped over the screen for a 7"touch screen.. i was told about a box of tricks that listens for canbus commands and the outputs preprogrammed ibus commands to your system, so any advice on whats the best way to go would be great..

Griffin PowerMate, Windows 8 , & RR

I have not given up on my PM as a volume/mute control...yet

I have it working fine in W8 with RR but only when the PowerMate.exe is the "active" program. As soon as I touch anything in RR, I have to select PM.exe again to get the PM to work.

So is there anyway to set PowerMate.exe as the default active program in windows? So basically when I touch any function in RR, RR would become the active program but as soon as there is no input activity it RR, PM.exe becomes the active program again automatically?

This may be my one last ditch effort to save the PM from the spare parts drawer and have to shell out for a Space Navigator (which is way too much money when all I need is a volume control).

I have read extensively other solutions here using Girder, etc. but honestly, I'm not sure I'm capable of following the instructions unless they are step by step. Besides, if I have to by Girder at $50, I'm halfway to the space navigator at that point.

Ride Runner and a working european navigation application

I'm new to the forum and I'm looking for some advice, I'm currently setting up my carpc and I'm having trouble with finding a european navigation program which will work with ride runner. So far I've tried Mappoint 2010 and 2011 and neither work, currently downloading 2009 from my MSDN account to try that.

Are there any other navigation programs that work with ride runner for the euro market? My current skin is DFX5.1.1

hey guys i am new to this website, i made an account because i need some help! :help:

i have a 1998 Cadillac Eldorado and id like have my double DIN head unit installed that used to be in my 1995 Eldorado. Now believe it or not the head unit is very different in both models. :mmph:

the dimensions of my Double DIN are 9.8 x 9.5 x 6.8 inches and it is a BOYO AVD701 7-inch touch screen. (just in case you must know)

i am not familiar with how to install radios or any of that but before i go somewhere to get it put in i just want to know if it will fit. :wacko:

I've found suitable replacements at DigiKey but what color should I get?
Cool white, neutral white or warm white?

I'm thinking warm would be too...well, warm and yellow. So it's down to neutral or cool.

There are 27 LED's along the bottom and DigiKey has them for $.90 each. $25 for just enough, plus some extras...I'd like to keep the cost under $30 so I don't want to order both colors.

Any suggestions?

hello guys. i have a wildfire S mobile phone. anmd i also have a bluetooth dongle for the pc. what i want is to be able to hear and pseak through the carpc mic/speakers. my usb has bluesoleil 5 software.. but i cant seem to be able to do it! i can hear music via from the mobile via bluetooth, but cant use the pc as a headset.. any ideas?

POWER problem (inverter or battery related?)

hey guys! . so first i must explain my install... i am using two battaries in the car. they are connected like that : the (+) is with the cable, a fuse and a switch. the (-) is connected through the cars grounding..
the pc is powerd through a norrmal psu, that gets power from a 400 watt inverter... SO

I suppose that when the car is working, both battaries should be at 13,8 V.. the cars battary is at 13,8 and the extra is at 11,8... (first clue)
when i turn on the inverter, the voltage of the extra batary drops to 11,5..
So here is the problem. everything worked fine, untill now. now when i turn on the pc. the fans just turn a bit and then they stop. from what i can get, when i turn on tyhe pc the voltage of the battary drops slowly to 9 where the pc shuts down.
BUT the pc works perfectly fine in my house.... with the same PSU just with normal power source
so what do you guys think ? is it the battery?(wich is prety old) or the inverter?? (witch is also ****ed up :P ) is there any way to test this??

(etxra: the pc in the car does the same even with all its cables disconected from it (usb and stuff) also, the only change i made to the system the day before was that i used one of the usb cables to be the trigger to 5v relay, so that power from the battary would be sended to the car amp to start working. also the probelm sowed up like this: i tuned on the pc. it got into windows. then shut down. and the it always do the same!!) plz help!

I know there are Anddroid apps for the car, but either I don't like them, or when they work, they dont have the style I want. Iv've been using mp3car member's AndCar app with good results.

Hi to everyone!
After a lot of reading in the this useful forum, it is the time to write my first post.
I have an idea for a Chevrolet 1976. The in-dash gauges which are really analog need to be replaced with the carputer's display. However I don't want to lose them, so my idea is to make them the same, but on the screen and to be "alive" :). The place is in the middle of the dash, between the front seats. They are 5 how I said only analog, driven by voltage :). What I know is that I need first 5 ADC with an external controller which communicates with the carputer's motherboard ( for example via COM port). After that I need an application for Windows that should "see" the data from the external controller and to make the gauges working according to the data. The idea is when the car starts, to start the screen and the application, which will simulate the real dash and gauges.
Is it possible to be created a plug-in for Centrafuse for this purpose? I will take a picture of the dash with good resolution and good quality , so that the application will look like the real dash.
Give me an advice! I officialy apologize about my english :) !

Throughout the existence of the in-car entertainment genre, a perfectly working voice recognition solution has been one of the primary systems to attempt to integrate. Minor grammatical errors aside, the MT107A did the job without any issue. Of course, most car computer users are not going to be using this microphone bundle to type reviews or even respond to an email. The primary use of most in-car microphone setups is clearly the use of voice commands and hands-free phone calls.

Before proceeding to anymore bragging, I will discuss a bit more of the hardware installation of the MT107A. Most people realize that compared to most devices, installing a microphone is pretty much a breeze in the car, and the MT107A definitely falls in that notion. Simply connect the USB cable to the microphones control box and processing core, then run your stereo microphone to the location of your choice. The primary benefit the MT107A has over competing devices is the fact that the stereo microphone comes with easy to use clips, allowing the microphone to be installed anywhere from the rear-view mirror or the sun shades in any vehicle today. In short, these clips allow you to have the microphones as close to your mouth as possible without interfering with driver view or personal comfort. Even if your microphone installation isn't as ideal, Phoenix Audio has a host of SDK applications on their website that can be used to tune the MT107A to your liking.

Wires connected and tucked, a small configuration in Windows sound manager gets you off and running with using the MT107A as your primary means of voice control in the car. Once configuration is completed, its up to the user to decide how to utilize the MT107A DSP based sound management systems. In testing, I loaded up the RideRunner front end with the DFXVoice plugin. Having previously having a lot of frustration from this software and my Andrea array microphone, I can say that it now works perfectly with the MT107A. Voice commands spoken at normal volumes get picked up and processed right away.

The more extensive test of an in-car hands-free solution is its use during a phone call via Bluetooth. In trying a few calls with a few different smartphones I received mixed results. My Motorola Droid Bionic worked rather well. Call participants reported no echoing or artifacts during the call, and the bi-directional communication flowed as well as any speakerphone based call would. My wife's LG smartphone however did have some echoing with the MT107A. Callers reported that they could hear themselves talking prior to hearing my response. These results were duplicated in many different scenarios; in my car parked, in my car while driving, and in my wife's minivan under the same conditions. The discovery in all of this testing was the MT107A can do the job of providing clear and precise voice fidelity... provided your phone manufacturer and bluetooth stack are doing their respective jobs.

In the end, I don't have a problem replacing the Andrea microphone I have "somewhat" used over the last 3 years with the Phoenix Audio Technologies MT107A. The MT107A control box, despite being fairly larger than the Andrea's, does a better job of allowing me to control my experience with my voice in the end.

The Positive:

• High fidelity voice capture
• Flexible installation of microphone
• SDK available to tune to personal preference
• Can be used with 2 sets of stereo microphones
• USB bus powered

The Negative:

• Sound processor housing is rather large
• Microphone wiring could stand to be longer to accommodate more installs without extensions
• Isn't the all-in-one solution for all Bluetooth phone calls

Using GPS Gamma (and indicator)

Sometimes, especially after my car has been sitting for a few days, the USB GPS receiver doesn't get a signal look very quickly, so the GPS-controlled gamma doesn't kick in, and if this occurs at night, I am left with a very bright screen. I am adding a button ("GAMMA") to toggle between Day/Night/GPS. The button works great, but I also want an indicator so I can see the status of the gamma. I added an indicator for "GPSGAMMA" which is supposed to indicate the current state, but nothing shows up.
Any ideas as I couldn't find much documentation on it?

I guess option 3, would be to buy a new ITX board... the Axiomtek doesn't have any SATA ports...

I am working in a personal project which consist in scanning, monitoring and analyzing the raw data of the CAN bus.

My car is a Fiat Grande Punto Mk3 2005 (CAN 15765-4 29 bits headers and 500Kbaudio/s).

I have already bought a scan tool, the ODBLink SX.

I have correctly installed the drivers and software. The software I am using is STNTerm, which is very useful and simple.

I have read the ELM327 and STN1100 data sheets, so I know most of the basic commands.

I have done some tests and everything went alright, my problem is that I don't understand why I get two different kind of data packets.

I mean, if I use the ST MA command (after AT H1 to activate the headers), I obtain a lot of packets, for example:

I already know the structure of the packets, I just want to know why I get different kind of packets when I monitor the bus and when I do a request for a PID with the ELM327 command, for example 01 23

I am analyzing the raw data, for example, I already know:

08 10 A0 00 00 FF 00 00

These 4 packets provide information on the brakes pressure for the 4 wheels (X0, X4, X8 and XC), this pressure (X) can be 0, 2 or 6 (00, 20, or 60; 04, 24 or 64;...)

I think these packets provide information about the speed of the 2nd wheel, but, why can I get the speed with 01 0D through the ELM327 and this information is in a different format than in these two packets which are shown with the ST MA command? I mean, why the same information is shown in two different ways?

Adding Monitors / DVD Player to Volvo S40 w/non-changeable stock HU SIMPLE

Hey guys,

Finally come the time to try something with one of my cars. This is going to be as basic as it gets. I guess I'm just looking for ideas. The main objective is to just be able to play DVDs inside the vehicle with front/rear stage monitors. I'm trying to keep it all as factory like as possible. In a perfect world. I could have the rear stage set-up to work with wireless headphones allowing the little one to watch whatever she wanted while letting the rest of the car speakers play regular audio at certain times. So I guess I'd need to be able to figure out a way to switch between the two.

-The car comes factory w/a AUX input; stereo jack style
-I'm thinking headrest montors for rear entertainment or one flipdown (how to get it work with a headset when need be would be nice.)
-Biggest issue is where to throw a front monitor in the vehicle! This S40 makes it such a pain.
-Stock HU is not interchangeable
-Hiding a DVD player shouldn't be too big of an issue

I know there are a few guys that have did carputer installs but that's a later project, the most important thing to me at the moment is screen placement/cleanliness & the ability to make it look good. A monitor up front on a stand wouldn't be too factory like IMO. I wish I could make a way for it to pop out from behind the way floating console!:help:

I have a homemade ELM327 scanner I have successfully used with several cars. I want to use it with a Peugeot Partner (2006) to read vehicle speed, RPM, etc, but I can't find the way. I have tried ScanMaster-ELM and the only way I found for it to connect to the ECU is to press the "Alfa" button of the start tab and in the opened dialog then select "Engine" and then "Connect". If I connect this way I can only read trouble codes, but I can't read RPM, speed, etc.

Using a Serial Port Sniffer, I read the commands used to connect and I have emulated it myself using Hyperterminal. I can connect this way:

EBY701 in Bybyte enclosure. I can easily take the boards off, but haven't dared disassembling the LCD/touch assembly.

Well. I bit the bullet and converted to the other side. Sold my old holden vy ss 6l(kept my old vp calais 5l)and bought a ford falcon fg turbo6 40th anniversary edition slightly modified:). Im not looking to add a carpc to it. Yet. However, i am trying to locate and buy an audio/visual patch cable to enable the onboard touch screen to play videos/dvds as well. I had previously been able to purchase these cables from jaycar electrics or ford themselves to modify friends ford bf's and fg's models. But now that i want one for myself. I have been unsucessful at purchasing one as both ford and jaycar dont have them in stock and dont know when they will. So if anyone(particularly in australia) know where i can get one or if someone has one they wish to sell. I would appreciate it if you could lead me in the right direction. 1995 BMW 325i Car PC Install "The Dork"

Currently I am at the tail end of an install and decided to post my progress here. As of now I have all of the wiring installed in the car and the old Radio and amp removed. Hopefully this weekend I will get everything else put in and post some more photos. Here are some teasers for now. :)

Put a camera in the grill for fun and recording on track days. It is USB and runs back to the hub in the glove box and the gets routed back to the computer in the trunk.

Lots of work to be done here... need new fogs, new indicators, new windshield and probably a new headliner.

This is the computer mounted on its MDF box with an FM tuner and a GPS.

I used some Db25 cable and breakouts in order to send 5 volt TTL signals front to back in order to control several functions of the car.

This is the control heart of the computer, inverter, power distribution board and relay control board

Polk audio 660 4 channel amplifier connected to the stock speakers, which I am going to replace fairly soon

Screen, Lilliput 719, mounted in a bezel I bought on the MP3Car store built for the e36

Just to give you a general idea of where the wires are coming out in the trunk. lots of wires to play with!

My power hookup, the ground is the same on the other side of the battery.

The opening for the screen, with the control box for it.

The bezel I crafted for the HVAC. I realize it's quite bad, but i will redo it at some point.

2010 G37s AUX Input

I bought a 2010 G37s a few months back and i've had enough of the stock bose system and the POS "Music Box" Nissan calls a HD based mp3 player, so it's time to think of other solutions. when i bough the car it did not have Navi so i told the dealer the only way i would buy it is if they added it, so indeed they did with this unit

which works fine, but the audio for the navigation is out of a separate tiny built in speaker (side note, the Prodigy one kit uses a small computer with Windows Embedded Edition if anyone cares the code to get to windows is 7777)

now my dilemma is that starting with the 2010 model they stopped adding RCA aux input and instead added a USB port to use either with a USB stick or an Apple product, neither of which does me any good.

I've searched through numerous Infiniti and G37 forums to find there is pretty much no aftermarket adapters to add a 3.5mm AUX in other than an FM crapulator. I saw instructions about regarding how to tap on to the SAT unit and play sound through channel 0 but if you don't subscribe to XM you can't get to channel 0.

so i figured what better place to ask than here, has anyone gotten external sound into a non-navi G37 with a Bose system?

Has enybody gotten the pinout for the GPS input to the head unit (eonon makes a G3001 external gps box ) I am hoping it has VGA signals and touch usb signals

That way I could have a motorized face w/ dvd player am/fm.. I'd use the GPS input to hook up my computer to it and use a windows based gps as well as other windows aps.

I was looking for a cid650 or invotek 633pc that has a vga monitor input and touch screen usb..

maybee this would be a soulition.

This also has lead to the addition of the ability to install plugins from a zip file, and will eventually allow the user to add, remove, enable and disable plugins on the fly, eventually without restarting RevFE.

To use the autoappmart plugin, you have to go into the settings menu, and change the username and password to your autoappmart.com username and password. These ARE saved plaintext, so if that worries you, wait for a later release where they will be encrypted.

I've got a line on a brand new MS-8 for 400 bucks shipped and I'm not sure which direction I want to go?

I have Seas Lotus RT27F tweets and RW-165/1 woofers. I'm looking for a midrange to pair with it currently. The MS-8 has internal amps and everyone seems to love this thing and it's capabilities. I know a lot of people on here like to do processing on the CarPC but for the price of this, and the price of external amps I'm wondering if this is not a good route?

Add DVD playback to skin

I am trying to add DVD functionality to the Alpine Blue skin which does not appear to have this by default. Here is what I tried:

--Changed one of the buttons to load the dvd_player.skin file
--I copied the contents of my video_player.skin file to the dvd_player.skin file

Everything works great so far. When I go into DVD, i browse for the video_ts folder, go up a level and it starts playing the dvd. However, either right before the movie starts or right after the movie starts, it goes back to playing the beginning of the dvd or sometimes it switches to playing videos instead of the dvd. Anyone know why it skips back to playing the beginning of the movie or anyone know the proper way to add dvd functionality to a skin? Debug shows that it issues a stop request for some reason but I have no idea why.

Hello everyone, I haven been busy for a while and didnt have time to work on my carpc setup. I was finally able to spend some time on it. so here it goes. I built a carpc with the following products:
inteld525 md motherboard
ssd hardrive for OS
regular laptop hard drive for everythingelse
M3 atx power supply
custom plastic case with 3 fans
external usb bluetooth
nternal wifi module

I am running windows 7 home premium 64bit along with centrafuse 3.6 with nav. I'm very happy with everything and have dialed everything in. my car is a 2000 mercedes and it has a factory bose amp and speakers. i'm very happy with my factory setup and am not planning on changing it at all. I have replaced my factory headunit with the carpc and made a custom harness to convert my factory speaker wires to RCAs. i have the headphone jack on the computer connected to a preamp/line driver and from there to the speaker wires and to the factory amp. I have this static noise that been there since the begining and it doesnt change with the volume up or done or play or pause, its just always there and very noticeable when music is not playing. i tried many different things such as a ground loop, external sound blaster usb sound card and the static is still there. so i finally ran out of ideas and decided to power up the computer with my battery booster(external booster/power source) and to my suprise not an ounce of noise anywher but as soon as i power it through my oem radio power source the noise comes back again. the external sound card didnt help much either. so now that i know that the cause of the noise is the power source(i'm using my oem headunit ACC, power and ground wires) what options do i have. any suggestions are welcomed. thank you for taking the time in adavanced.

Hey everyone! I just installed RR and need some help getting the weather info populated at all. Currently I have installed the BU-353 USB GPS Receiver and verified that it is functional with the utility that came with it. I need some guidance on how to get the GPS and Ride Runner to talk. I have already setup RRconfig to read the correct com port. Also have downloaded zips.dat and placed it in the Program Files\ride runner folder.

Running Windows 7 32bit SP1
No AV or anything else installed that could be conflicting (that I know about)

Am I missing something? Any guidance would be appreciated.

Hi guys , i've just buy a new car , an old peugeot 106 from 1992 , and i have a pioneer KEH-P7200RDS who can control a cd changer by an ip-bus plug , so i bought on ebay an ip-bus -> RCA cable , and when i connect it on the car i can't listen my music by the rca ( from my ipod classic ) ... I search on the internet and i see i have to activate the aux function ... but i don't know how ...
Have you got an idea for the pioneer detect my rca input ? :suspicious:

Thought I'd play with Ride runner (CF Trial ran out) and am having issues with getting audio through the radio. I am getting audio from MP3's just fine, and the display works fine for the radio (the DAB now playing text etc) but I can't hear anything.

I am using a Creative Xfi USB sound card (I like the physical volume knob). ALL other sounds work fine, it's just the radio (and I did check the cables!)

What am I doing wrong?

i've just reinstalled my carpc, and i installed the latest version of riderunner (02/01/2012)

I've Cinergy's terratec 600 radio, installed on my epia en15000 with a pci riser....

i selected the relative option with RRConfig, but the radio not work!!!!

before format my HDD, with a RideRunner 10/06/09 version, i used the radio just choosing the right option in RRConfig and with Radiator installed....

NOW, Radiator is installed, and it works correctly using the Cinergy Hardware...

but from Riderunner, radio still not works....

Troubleshooting Speakers and Sound w. Centrafuse

Hey All,

I am using the Creative XFI 5.1 External Sound card to run my speaker system in my 2005 hyundai accent off of my Windows 7 CarPuter. I am running Centrafuse, and am having a bit of a tough time getting the sound equalized properly. Lately, I've realized that my front door speakers have sounded pretty quiet, so I started tinkering around with the built-in Mixer in Centrafuse. Now, I can hear my rear speakers blasting whenever I turn the volume down all the way, and when I crank my front and rear speakers to max, I'm unable to turn the volume down all the way to 0 (as in, if the volume appears to be on 0%-1%, my speakers still sound like they are at 50% volume or so). It sounds like my speakers are on different levels or something. Is there any way to fix this? If I reset my settings, then the front speakers sound quiet again and I'm unhappy with the overall audio quality. Is there a better choice of mixing software that I can use? I'm fairly certain that none of this is hardware related, I guess I'm just having a problem with the software...if anyone can give me some suggestions or advice as to what I can do, please let me know! How to handle a pulse on a 12V line?

I am now on to handling the dimmer control within the car which is described as pulse modulation.

Basically, it switches the 12V on and off very quickly to control how bright the dash LEDs are. I need to measure this speed so that I can detect the 5 or 6 rates/frequencies that are in use and translate them into a brightness setting on the screen.

Is this handled by the frequency board?
Can it be done and how?

little electric problem for reversing

hi,
i have lilliput 629 with trigger cable for reverse cam. it was running perfect for couple of months then it start to trigger when i brake.
however there is little impulse when i brake so it goes av and back to pc simultaneously for once. i guess i have problem with my trucks taillight. i will solve it next service day.
during this period, iwant to make a delay circuit that eliminates the impulse from the brake light. i ve googled some and find a circuit with rc,relay, diode.
it is little complex for me so i wonder if i can make delay with simple rc circuit.

Hey everyone,
During my first project, I tried Radioshack Quick Disconnects. I was building an all-in-one unit, and I needed to split 3 input wires (BATT, IGN, and GND) 3 ways - one to the power supply, the other one to the monitor and the third one to the amp (all 3 parts are ok with unregulated 12V). I also wanted to be able to disconnect any of the device quickly, yet have them securely connected at other times. My problem was that splitting a wire 3 ways is pretty messy, and with all that extra wire / electrical tape, the whole contraption becomes inflexible, so it was a pain to fit it all in a 7x7x4 box.

I was wondering if there's something similar to Dual-Row Barrier Strips, only instead of 1-1 wire joining, I can get 1-3 splitting. In other words, the top would have 3 total terminals, and the bottom would have 9 total: 3 triplets, each fed off one of the terminals above.

Alternatively, I was trying to figure out if i can somehow use one of Ring Terminals, but didn't find the right thing to connect them two - it needs a screw terminal, I assume?

So what's the best way to do this? For my next project, I'd like to have better wire management, and it seems that I'm just not using the right parts for the job.

Noob Advice: In car network

Hello... I'm a long time lurker but haven't posted yet. Long story short is that we in our current house have a very large network media server that serves up media to XBMC media centers in many of the rooms of the house. My kids have become accustomed to watching any TV show or movie we have at any time they chose.

Due to a mandatory move, we'll be packing up the house and relocating back to the states, and between a leave location in Europe and the time it will take to drive across the states to my new duty location, my kids will be looking at around 16 days in the car.

I want to set up a mini version of our house setup in the cars (ours and the rental in Europe). the kids both have netbooks, and I currently have a router which supports USB storage (meaning; plug a USB HD into it, and you can stream media from the HD), and I have a 2TB drive plugged into it; and I also have a 2 TB NAS drive. That drive does not need a USB port, but does need an ethernet port.

Question is, what in everyone's opinion, is the best way to create a network solution in my car so the kids can stream media to their laptops? My choices as I see them are: use my current router and a 1TB USB drive; which would require power from the car to run the router, and the router is huge. Another solution is to get one of those really small mini-routers, but they don't seem to have network or USB storage.

Since we are somewhere between Europe and the mid-east, we currently dont have cell phones, and don't know what the newest, coolest cell tech has to order. I have read about 3 and 4G streaming tech, and some of the mobile routers offer 3G support, but thats all I know about it.

Thoughts?

Hi all.

I've somehow buggered the hardware of the car pc.

All working find until I tried having a separate on/off button on the dash. No problems splicing the wires in the Mini ATX pc so that the normal power switch worked on the Antec ISK 300-65 case and on the button. But, as I tried to install the button I touch two wires together (NO, i hadn't disconnected the 2nd battery stupidly) and there was a spark. Now it won't boot up.

The system can run on the normal 60w PSU off the mains or I've got a M2-ATX 160w psi. Both worked perfectly before, just needed to swap the cabling over for car or home use.

The little light on the board lights up and I've checked all the wiring as much as I can and nothing happens whether I press the case power button or the separate on/off button.

So my question is, what have I blown?? I've checked prices to replace the board and the case and as their not cheap I thought I'd ask here first.

The spec is an Antec ISK300-65 case with 60w PSU (i think) or M2-ATX 160w PSU, Zotac NM10 motherboard.

switching an App

In my main menu I have an 'A' area to display a 3D rotating clock.
Now, I use Sygic Drive as navigation and I can embed this App into
this 'A' area instead (or on top of) the clock.

My question:

How can I use the same (B)utton for starting AND closing the app?
Other words, creating a switch.
Now I have to close the embedded App with its own Exit option to
resume the 3D clock again.

This is how I active the embedded Sygic window by that specific Button:

I'm working through my ever increasing shopping list, towards building my first CarPC.

I drive a SEAT Leon, and it would be great if I could somehow interface the CarPC with the cars VAG CANBUS system, for realtime performance monitoring + pulling off diagnostic codes.

Does anyone here also drive a VAG car, who has been able to achieve anything similar?

In the past I purchased the special cable required for connecting in to the car (ECU), to read off the CANBUS Diagnostics, however I have a feeling this cable is not original and I've been having some problems getting software running with it.

Any feedback would be great.

I have a skyline 350gt (aka infinity g35) I'm adding a tablet computer to the dash and have a question regarding supplying power to the tablet.

I'm getting a professional install of an adapter into the factory stereo to allow me to get aux & ipod input via a little box that attaches to the external cd connector behind the stereo. At the same time I am going to ask them to wire up a 5v USB cord into the cubby hole where i will be placing my android tablet.

I was thinking of buying this and a usb cable and asking them to wire it directly into the 12v supply of the car, is this appropriate?

Would I be better to buy a little PCB board someone with a larger heatsink, would this be more reliable?
eg.

How often do these things die?

Am I better to ask them to just lead the 12 volt wires into the cubby hole, then wire the voltage adapter inside the cubby hole so that if it dies, i don't have to disassemble my entire car to replace it?

Internet Radio Help needed

OK.. so I'm including internet radio in the next edition of FI.. so files ending in .asx will play fine :-)

It will work something like this...

Country -- ie..

UK (folder with flag)
USA (folder with flag)

Then when you press the UK folder it will have things like
BBC Radio 1.asx
BBC Radio 2.asx
etc....

Also in that folder can be jpg images called the same name as the asx file.. ie
BBC Radio 1.jpg
This image will show like an album cover (see pic below)

I would like to package these internet radio channels with FI, so you have them to hand from start.

I've included a few to get going but could do with a lot more.

They work very well to be honest :-)

Hey everyone,

I'm new here but have been a long time lurker!
Down to business..

I've got an Audi TT with the factory bose setup. However lately I have been rather interested in setting up something a little more different.
If I build a full fledged carpc... using a decent soundcard with relatively good software audio processing, would it still sound good if I hooked up the soundcard via an aux input to an aftermarket headunit?

The reason why I'm asking is because I still wanted to keep a stock headunit for my purposes.
It's hard fabricating anything for the Audi TT because everything is part of the dashboard, so therefore I'd mount a monitor somewhere.

I'm worried that the carpc segment may not as sound as good because it's not being hooked up via any rca cables and just through a 3.5mm audio cable...

Any thoughts/opinions/solutions??

Is there a way to run a tablet like the iPad as a monitor only in the vehicle, and normally outside? I want more features on my car-pc than a tablet can offer, but would love to use one of them for the screen.

The CarPC is the perfect mobile GPS/WIFI/OS platform for a bit of WarDriving, so who has setup their rig to do this? :)

Which WIFI Card are you using / warstumbling software?

With my Laptop in the car, when I used to do this, I used a PCMCIA Orinoco card - which had various features, was ideal for "scanning".
But are there any decent USB WIFI offerings? Perhaps a USB to PCMCIA interface (so I could re-use that dusty Orinoco Card).
Plus adding the external antenna on the roof significantly added to the detection rates, so a WIFI device with external antenna port essential.

Looking at building my CarPC very soon, currently doing my research on all the CarPC Hardware / wiring for the car...
Would be interested to read about your WarDriving setups + pictures.

ONE PCI Slot - Accommodate it with Sound or Video ?

Hi guys,

Looking at Motherboard options, a good deal of the mini-ATX units feature just One PCI slot (to keep them compact).
So whats the norm for filling this slot? - or does it come down to ones individual requirements?

For example add a dedicated PCI graphics card, to make your Windows (or Linux) based frontend menu system faster and more efficient.
Or, add a Sound Card, that provides alot more scope for great sound clarity + outputs for multi-component sound.

Suppose you *could* instead get a decent external USB soundcard, leaving the PCI slot available for Video anyway. Having the best of both worlds.

Smallest XP ever

Hi all,

I want the smallest XP install ever, all I want it for is to act like a old DOS boot disk and get access to NTFS drives to fix / repair I do not want ANY screen output ideally just drop to a CLI and I can move / copy files folders, this is why I thought of a small XP install to create a USB drive, boot from it and do what I need.

I do not need Network, web, GUI or anything apart from NTFS access, hope someone can guide me on this.

A few years back when I was using RR I had to use a third party tool to get speech to work. Now there is an option for Voice in RRConfig. Can someone point me in the way of directions for how to use this? Do we need to download the SAPI 5.1 SDK and it will automatically work or is there something else we need to download? Where are the commands it uses?

control rc servo with fb

hi im a newbie and im trying to control a standard servo with fb. im not having any luck i have read in post where this is doable but no explanation how to hook it up. the servo has 3 wires but fb out only has 2. i tried hooking servo + and - to 5v then servo yellow to fb out + then fb - to 5v ground thats hooked to servo. but nothing happens. will this hook up work is there something in software i need to change ie remap output. im using visual basic i have input /outputs working for other things like activatig relay and reading sensors.

Wiring the Car - Power to the CarPC / Display - Considerations?

Hi guys,

This is my first Post, however I've been following the forum for some time.

Currently I'm focusing on wiring the car up, to power the CarPC setup. Would a 40A (480W) Amplifier Wiring Kit (6mm2 gauge) be ample, from the car battery? This live + feed will be routed through the car to the rear/boot, where the CarPC will be installed.

Are there other considerations I should take into account while adding the power wiring into the car at this point?
Dont want to put this in only to find I've not factored in an additional lead here or there for some other critical component!

For example, whats going to be the most appropriate way to power the dash mounted (Lilliput) touch screen? Switched live feed from somewhere?

Hardware Review: Element 7" Touchscreen Display

What is it?

The Element is a 7" Touchscreen display which features HDMI, DVI, VGA & composite video connections.

The Verdict:

The Element 7" display is a well-received competitor into the small touchscreen genre. In its first revision, it seems to incorporate most of the criteria which makes a touchscreen device usable in the car. Those looking for a budget display device with great quality and community recommendation should look at the Element as their device of choice.

What�s in the box?

The Element comes with the 7" Touchscreen monitor, power supply, a remote control, and a 3.5mm to composite video connector. HDMI is not included, however because the Element uses a separate mini-USB connection for the touchscreen, any HDMI cable will do.

Please note at the time the photos were taken the Element monitor came only in open frame form. A case is now available for the device.

Description:

Every once in a while, sites like ebay turn up a gem for the small market Car PC world. Such is the case with the new Element 7" touchscreen monitor, a device that community member RipplingHurst found while sifting through the items available on that website. His intrigue, which lead to this massive thread of information regarding the device, inspired me to contact the displays creator to review the device's uses for Car PC.

With that massive thread in mind, lets summarize some of facts regarding the Element display. It is a 7" Samsung monitor with LED backlighting, overlayed by a resistive 4-wire "sunlight readable" touchscreen input device. Note that it is not transflective, but it does a fairly decent job in high sunlight conditions. I would put the device right on par with the high brightness Lilliput displays of recent years in terms of the amount of screen visible when the sun is bearing down.

The controller for the device supports the famed 800x480 resolution from any video device which supports it. This means sticklers car PC pixel perfection can use their compatible video cards with the Element without the hassle of custom resolutions or firmware hacks. Oddly enough, the device supports many different resolutions all the way up to 1920x1080, far higher than most Lilliput and Xenarcs dare go. Now, most people wont ever use a 7" monitor at that high a resolution, but the ability to do so is worth a bragging right or two.

Another built-in feature that was kindly considered is the ability to auto switch to composite AV1 on signaling. This request has become more popular with the installation of rear cameras in car PC setups. Auto-on/Auto-off and input resume are all there as well. The creator as definitely done their research in regard to what car PC hobbyist are looking for from their touchscreens. They've even done away with the dreaded "blue screen of boot" no signal screen. Instead of retina burning bright blue, the screen is a subtle black.

The display quality of the Element display is darn nice at factory settings. Colors are rich and deep, and there's not any noticeable "pixel effect" or ghosting at low resolutions, no matter what input you choose to use. The only poor aspect of the viewing quality was the off-axis viewing angles. Colors quickly turn dark when viewing at modest angles. Unfortunately this is a trait of near all resistive touchscreen monitors, and the Element makes no strides in this regard.

Installing the open-frame Element in to your car shouldn't be any more difficult than normal. The device will fit into mp3Car's double-din kits available, albeit with some minor controller mounting and cable interference issues. The display fits nicely into the opening of the bezel, with only a minor smidgen of touchscreen white-space showing through. The developer for the device kindly included a long strand of cables connecting the controller board to the button panel, meaning the buttons can be neatly tucked away, or the IR sensor for the remote can be mounted away from the dash panel.

A minor matter of contention I have with the Element is of personal opinion. The device uses separate USB and HDMI cables, meaning there is one additional wire required to tuck into the dash and extend out to the PC. The benefit to this is the ability to use any HDMI cable, instead of the stiff and often difficult to replace HDMI-to-HDMI/USB cables found with Lilliput and Xenarc monitors.

The Positive:

� Above average sunlight readability
� High quality display with extremely rich color and contrast
� Includes features car PC installers demand
� High selection of available resolutions
� True native 800x480 support
� Buttons can be easily mounted elsewhere for space saving in installation

The Negative:

� Requires a mini-USB wire for touchscreen
� Uses proprietary touchscreen drivers
� Height of controller and angle of connectors mean some hacking required for double-DIN kits
� Poor off-axis viewing angles

The Verdict:

The Element 7" display is a well-received competitor into the small touchscreen genre. In its first revision, it seems to incorporate most of the criteria which makes a touchscreen device usable in the car. Those looking for a budget display device with great quality and community recommendation should look at the Element as their device of choice.

Directed HD Radio with Centrafuse. cannot control volume.. HELP!

Hey everyone,

Here is my problem... I just the recently picked up the directed HD radio receiver and Mitch's cable. I am using centrafuse 3.5 with windows 7. I hooked everything up and started up centrafuse and when I turn on the radio in centrafuse the radio comes on clear and great except I cannot control the volume. It comes on so loud I have to turn it off almost right away but I have tried to turn down the volume and mute the volume but neither work when the radio is going. The volume bar moves but the volume doesn't actually change. If i play music off my hard drive the volume works fine. Is there a setting or driver that I am missing. Thanks!

2010 Toyota Corolla S - Custom CarPC Build (Lots of photos)

This is my CarPC project - I will be installing it in my 2010 Toyota Corolla S. I have quite a few pictures of the build and I finally received the last of the parts that I needed to complete it. I will be installing it this weekend hopefully. I have just about 2 weeks into this project, I lost count of the hours and $$$ that it took to design and build it. Lots of custom fabrication work on my end. Have a look at my progress so far :nutz:

The barebones of the build consists of a ASUS F1A75-1 Deluxe Motherboard, AMD A8 3870 APU, and 8GB of DDR3 1600 RAM.

Bundled with the motherboard was this rather convenient wireless remote/keyboard that seems to be perfect for the CarPC

The in-dash monitor is a modified Lilliput 669GL-70NP/C/T with the Resistive touch replaced with a Multi-Touch Capacitive panel - it's VERY nice!

I have a 4-ch JBL amp and a Monoblock Kenwood amp to power my speakers - I will be using this Clarion EQ/Line Driver to up the sound cards output to 7Vrms to reduce any noise and lower the gain on the amps

I didn't want to use any pre-made cases, and most mini-itx cases wouldn't work with what I wanted anyhow. I decided to install everything in my Glovebox (my car has 2 compartments so I didn't mind sacrificing the lower one). I needed to level out the base of it and make a durable platform to start with. I used 22ga steel as the mounting plate for the components - contoured to the inside of the Glovebox.

I needed to make my own motherboard tray, so I used 22ga aluminum for that.

Pattern is stenciled out, stand-offs are in place, and it's ready to be cut out.

This was just a test fit to make sure everything was in check

I will be using a 250W (300W Peak) Intelligent Automotive ATX PSU, a Sony Blu-Ray Slim Slot-Load Optical drive, and a Samsung 128GB SATA3 SSD (over 500MB/s R/W)

Standard Metra mounting bracket I modified to fit the Blu-ray drive under the monitor - just a test fit

I will be using 2 60mm High RPM fans (1-in/1-out) to keep everything happy and cool - stencils I used for the cutouts

UPDATE!! - Install Completed :)

Ok, after about 7-8hrs of installation time it's finally installed. I ran into quite a few issues with fitment (mainly the Glovebox due to the external fans) - but it wasn't terrible. I ran 8ga wire to the Power Supply since it can draw upwards of 25A at peak power (I know 8ga is tad overkill for 25A but I had it laying around). It's fast, runs great, and one of a kind

so 2010 mustang gt has a shaker 1500w system in it (1,000watt for the speakers 500 for the subwoofers on two seperate amps)
This is factory equipment

with the engine on or off, at low levels of volume i get a lot of whine or buzzing sound.. if i pause a song and turn up the volume you can hear it to, almost sounds like white noise sometimes or other times like a A.M. type of radio. At volume 1 i get more white noise then i do music.

I figured out, the noise is only comming from the subwoofers. If i disconnect the power to the amp for the subs the noise goes completely away. The dealer replaced my head unit, it did nothing.

Im open for suggesting and testing ideas. I really dont know where i should go from here. I checked to make sure all grounds are secured and connected and they are.

I've had a car PC for almost 10 years now. VIA EPIA-M & OPUS 150w

The motherboard just doesn't seem to cut it anymore with RR or CF. (Run's around 30% CPU but spikes to 100% with any interaction). I want the car PC to be a lot smoother (faster) when switching screens and multitasking.

The new build I was thinking..

Opus 150w (the mother board is an 24pin + P4. i'll have to convert a harddrive psu connect to make up for the P4 connect on the motherboard)
1 or 2 gig of ram (not sure if you need 2 gig or not)

Hi, I have a JoyCon EX setup in my G35 with my CarPC and Centrafuse 4. Originally I had the JoyCon configured to control the system volume (instead of the volume shortcuts in CF). I have since changed the configuration and set the volume buttons to work with the CF volume shortcuts.

However, the old settings are usually active, still! Then, randomly, the new settings will start working. For example, I start the car and begin driving, the old settings are in place. While driving, after some time, I hit the volume up/down key on my steering wheel and now the new settings are being used (volume indicator in CF goes up or down).

Has anyone had this happen? It seems that JoyCon has both settings applied and it doesn't make sense!

RRShoutcast not working

Not sure if anyone else has run into this but just the other day I attempted to run rrshoutcast and found that the lists come up blank (genres, ect.). Now, recently I've updated RR to the Jan 2012 release and I'm not sure if that had something to do with it as I've been unable to test prior versions (stupidly deleted the old installers). I've tried uninstalling and re-installing both RR (Jan 2012) and winamp (5.0623) without any luck. Currently running Windows 7.

Hissing/static on car stereo auxiliary connection with Nook Tablet

This is a question about using my Nook Tablet through my car stereo's aux input. It's an off the shelf Nook with no modifications to the OS.

That said, I discovered a possibly huge (for me) issue this morning when I connected it to my car stereo auxiliary input for the first time. There is a constant hissing/static sound coming from the Nook when playing audio. When I pause the music it goes away, but then comes right back as soon as I start playing again. It can also be heard anytime the Nook is playing other sounds such as the lock/unlock sound. It's very loud, at least as loud as the music, and changes slightly when I move the aux cable around but never goes away. The same aux cable was tested with other sources (mp3 players) and worked great and the static cannot be heard when listening to the Nook through headphones. I have not had the chance to test it on my other vehicle's stereo, but it is completely unusable in my car.

Any ideas/suggestions? Is there some sort of shielding that may need to be done on the aux cable? If so, why would this happen on the Nook when it doesn't happen on anything else? Thanks in advance.

Problem with "AX" and OPT_NOFOCUS,OPT_PARENT

For one of the apps I use, I tried AX,...,"OPT_NOFOCUS,OPT_PARENT" and that solved all of the issues I had with the app popups disappearing when RR refreshed.

However, I can't find the apps main window.

I've tried using Window functions, AutoIT functions, and RR "Activate".

In all cases I used the value returned by RRAppName or a constant of the same value.

Needless to say, I need to be able to find/activate the app window so I can send keystrokes and other interactions.

If I use Enum.... functions in Windows, does the OPT_PARENT require me to run the RR window chain to find it?

No Music/Video

I have installed RR with all of the pre-req's and configured the music/video to look at the my music/my videos folders. However, no music is displayed unless I click the browse/folder button. How do get the music/videos to show up by default? This happens on all three of my computers (XP,Vista,7) so I must be missing something obvious especially since I have had this configured a while back. If I use Winamp to point to a folder, it creates directories above the music like artist/album but it still requires me to click the folder/browse icon to see the music. My videos/DVD work fine outside of RR but do not open or play inside RR even though I have it configured to point to mpc home cinema and have ffdshow so maybe this is related.

Also, can anyone point me in the direction of a post on how voice control works. Before I had to reinstall the OS on my carputer, I was using a voice control plug in but it looks like this is no longer supported. Can we just download the MS 5.1 SAPI SDK and it will work by default with the newest RR instead or is there a good plug in?

Kenwood/Pioneer IPBUS Project:Controlling HU LCD and reading button presses for CarPC

Last night I had an idea for controls to my CarPC. I thought why not reverse engineer a headunit's face. It's cosmetically pleasing and looks nice in a car, it's backlit and has lots of buttons, and even an LCD. I assume most of them are either I2C, SPI or Serial data (depending on the era and date of the radio). Then I had an even further idea of the IPBus that Kenwood and Pioneer headunits use for external devices, like the kenwood keg or a cd changer, and I thought if I could monitor this bus while operating a device and figure out how the commands are sent and received, I could keep the functions of the radio and then switch to cd changer mode and then the buttons could operate the CarPC. Once the commands are deciphered, if it is anything other than Serial I could use an Arduino to watch the line and interpret the commands and send my own protocol of commands over a serial line to the CarPC for my software to interpret and issue actions on the CarPC based on the button pressed. If the IPBUS is found to be using a serial transmission that a computers serial port can read, I could have the decoding/deciphering done on the CarPC and eliminate the need for an arduino. What would be nice too would be to have the ability to inject code to the IPBus for sending LCD display data back.

I spent a few hours today looking and couldn't find anything much more than a pinout of the IP-Bus connector and a few posts on here. It looks like Jbor made a device that interprets buttons for Pioneer's IPBus but the thread seems to have abruptly stopped in 2007. I have an old tape deck (Yes, TAPE DECK!) kenwood radio that looks nice and has an LCD, so I'm using that to test with. From the pinout of the IPBus it looks like there is a pin for +12 (probably for motors, etc), 2 audio channels, an audio gnd, a turnon signal (similar to remote for audio amps) which is 4v, a GND, a "mute request pin" which essentially tells the radio to allow switch to CD changer mode and allow input from the 2 audio pins on the connector, a clock sync pin and 2 pins for data, one for in and one for out. So I am assuming it is just serial data. In any event, just to cover all bases I just bought the 16 channel logic analyzer. I should be able to watch serial data from as low as 1.8V logic with it. I suppose I can turn on CD-Text or something from an IPBus device and watch the data stream and try to find the cd text in ascii / hex / binary in the data stream and look for consistent patterns of data when I press a button on the head to trigger a function.

While I would be happy with a direct hack to the face, probably some kind of I2C or SPI to the LCD (A look at what chip is onboard inside the face would be of help), and probably resistance values on some pins or a matrix for the buttons, but I would be really thrilled if I could retain all of the functions of the radio and be able to have custom functions to the buttons when it's put in CD-Changer mode. So in the meantime while I am waiting for the logic analyzer in the mail, do any of you guys have some advice, input, experiences or knowledge as to how these things probably work? As I try to progress through this project and find a successful way to accomplish what I want to do, I will update everybody here with my findings and any help would be much appreciated!!

So my motherboard (Asus P8H67-I Deluxe) has an integrated blue tooth adapter. I am having a hell of a time getting Bluesoleil to function with it. Whenever I install Bluesoleil, the adapter won't make a connection. I uninstall, and the Asus BT Go software has no problem. At this point I'm fed up and considering just buy another adapter for $20 and calling it a day with the integrated 1. Is there any problem with this?

The time has come for me to start a worklog as work will hopefully be starting on the lotus soon. But first a little about the car, #2936R, we Europa freaks call out cars by their numbers. Now I could trace it all the way back to its production date, but that is boring, so I will just say what I plan to do to #2936R. It will get 4 wheel disk brakes, a Ford Zetec engine with a turbocharger, MegaSquirt ECU, 5-point harness, new wheels & tires, all new rubber, probably all new glass, loads of body work, lots of cool lights, new interior, and a full computer system.

Best way to emulate mouse clicks

I recently added a skin for my iPhone so I can interact with it without having to look down at. With touchscreens, if you press long enough, it acts as a right mouse click, but I need some functionality beyond that.
I need to be able to right click for a short duration and I also need to be able to right click twice in a row and that cannot be done with the touchscreen mouse click emulation.

At a minimum, I can install my macro recorder/player and compile a .exe which will simulate the mouse events that I need, but that seems like overkill. Is there a way to do this through RR directly?

(For those that want to know, its a jailbroken iPhone running "veency" and I just use a command line for UltraVNC on a button to launch this skin)

I'm new, thought I'd say hi. I own a 2000 Mustang v6 and I plan on doing quite a bit to it. I've always been a hardware fanatic, and my last obsession was computers and video games. My new obsession is my car (its a man thing) and I've rebuilt the engine to take some boost and I'm planning on putting two t3/t4 turbos on there. Its about time I united these two obsessions. I want to have a HUD and completely digital gauges run by a carputer that runs my audio with nav and I'd like to have software to modify the ECU like megasquirt as well, but I don't know that much about it. I want this all done by the end of April when I'll be taking a two-year leave to Paraguay. Further-down the road I also want remote start from my android and the sort.
Any tips would be greatly appreciated. This forum looks like it will be one of my favorites.

I'm rebuilding the engine in my 2000 v6 Mustang to the internals from a Thunderbird SupCoupe so I can run about 13# of boost on twin turbos. So, now you know the plan and the reason why, here's the question. How do I get my ECU to read, and in-turn publish that information to my carputer. I still don't know if I'm going to go with an android-based interface or an actual PC, and I know that plays a role in the publishing of the boost/vac data, but I need some help on how to get that information to my display. doing this i am quickly being reminded of why i now use audiomulch.

the limitations:
console cannot see any more then 2 audio channels on any audio device. so in this image, you can see that my 6 channel creative x-fi card will only show the first 2 channels at different bitrates, but will not show the other 4 available channels.

so this means that to get a sound card with more then one stereo output, you need to use a secondary program like asio4all to get all the outputs into console.

during the brief time i did this using a usb sound card, i found that it added a large amount of hassle--there is a large possibility that it will miss the usb driver, or can't find it, screwing up the entire process..

i should also note that at the time of this post, console is quite old. the last update was back in '08, with no apparent progress.

anyways..

after downloading the full version of virtual audio cable, asio4all, and console(www.console.jp)

go through and install them like any other program.

once they are installed, go into the sound settings-- in windows 7, it's under playback devices:

then select virtual audio cable as the default device:

after that, start up console, and go to edit-->preferences-->audio devices

select asio as the driver:

then select asio4all v2:

then click the configure button at the bottom of the page, and disable any ports that you do not need:

of note-- inputs/output's refer to the audio going in console, not where the audio signal is in the pc..--that used to confuse me a lot..

after that, you will want to take note of which inputs and outputs are which-- i usually just make a little notepad document about it(i did the above step after this screen shot):

then after that, connect everything straight through.

and the very last step, click on the power button in the 'play' bar to enable the audio source.

note-- the 'power button' audio enabler status is saved with the file, so once you save your working setup with it enabled, it should startup automatically without user intervention.

and assuming everything worked correctly, you should have audio..

after that, it is just a matter of adding plugins and setting it up however you want it to.

i think that is it-- it makes sense to me at least.. :nutz:

Simpleton needs help with FBv4

I have a version 4 FB and this is the first time I'm able to hook it up and try to use it.

In testing, I am using a laptop running Win7 32bit. Power to the brain is switched to USB. No LEDs lit on the brain when it is connected.

If I run up the configurator it recognizes that I have one version 4 brain available. I went through the wizard and declared that I had one analog input on port zero. Having done that, I don't see how to run it and test the input so I switched to some code I wrote against the winusb library.

Using my own code it connects to the first v4 brain it sees. If I unplug the brain it detects nothing. If I plug it back in, it gets detected.

I then cycle through the first four analog inputs and get random values returned in the range 0-1023. I was not expecting that cos I only have one input connected. Could I be connecting to a virtual brain used for testing?

The connection I'm trying is for steering wheel media controls. Max resistence is 4.7Kohms when nothing pressed. Min value expected is 22ohms.

I have the power (+) line connected to a 4.7Kohm resistor and the other end of the resistor connected to the signal line. The signal line then goes to the + side of the SWC controls and the ground (-) goes to the other side of the SWC controls.

The most confusing part is that I'm getting random signals on more than one port. The other confusing part is that it's not obvious how to use the fusion configuration file in the MDX program.

Could the board be dead as there is no LED?

Voltage drop causing Mac Mini to turn off

Hello everyone,

I am currently 98% finished with my mac mini car computer project but there is one small issue that is impeding my progress.
I have the Mac Mini powered by a 115 watt inverter that is directly wired to my battery. The Mac Mini works perfectly when the car is off and when it is on, the issue is in the start up period.
When the car starts the voltage drops from 12v to roughly 10.5 volts. This causes the Mac Mini to turn off. I have exhausted all of my options. I already have a capacitor in line with the Mac Mini and a Yellow Top D35 Deep Cycle Battery.

If anyone has any other ideas I would much appreciate it. As soon as it is done I would love to take alot of pictures and post it on this site because I know alot of you wanted to put a Mac Mini in your car.

Replacement Bezel - Where to Find

I'm looking for a replacement front bezel for my Lilliput FA1011 and I can't find anything, anywhere. It doesn't help that Lilliput is a British company so I'm not able to call them (can't call internationally). I'll try sending them an e-mail, but failing that, does anyone know where I can get my hands on a replacement bezel?

High freq distortion

This is my system:
Intel BOXDG45FC using on board audio
Crunch 1000watt amp
front stage: logic 6.5 /tweet components
rear stage: Tang Band W8-740P 8" Subwoofer

I have high freq distortion at any sound level. Not sure if I should get off onboard audio with usb audio: Sound Blaster. I don't have any EMI or engine whine at all. When I play pandora through the system I here hiss between tracks and the high freq noise all the time. It sounds like the crackling on paper.

Any suggestions I could explore would be greatly appreciated.

Ok so I'm very much an audiophile type of guy. I'm starting to piece together my list of components for my CarPC setup and so far this part I'm stumped on. I'd really like to use this DIY dac which is capable of 8 channels.

So I decided to load up RR and Centrafuse to check a few things. What I found and what I think is a major downfall to both is that you can't designate speaker outputs. My main concern here is the sub channel output? How do you specify that a particular channel is for the sub? I'm guessing most of you just use standard sound cards with onboard cards and such, but all the ones I've ever had experience with are not to my expectations. Maybe I'm just trying to do something that's not possible. There has to be a way to get audiophile quality out of these things though. I know there are some high end sound cards out there, but I'm not sure they are really up to par with some of the higher end DAC's out there. Anyways so this is my main question, how can I designate outputs and what not? Has anyone gotten 4 channels plus a sub channel out of something other then a PC sound card?

Ever since I've done my re-build about 2 months ago, I got around to finally putting in some usb hubs. In the mix of all the re-building the system, I upgraded plenty of parts, but in the whole process I can't find or can't remember if the iblue gm-2 usb gps device came with drivers/software discs...

I searched online, as device manager tells me Cp2102x... and that in turn leads to silabs USB to UART bridge. That turned out installing a driver and vcp. After a re-boot of the machine, the touchscreen went crazy, like constant moving clicking on the screen. I unplugged my phone, no help, unplugged wifi adapter, no help. I unplugged the gps device and the clicking/moving of the pointer stopped. Looked in device manager and found 2 new items. One was a microsoft USB Serial Ball Mouse (or something like it). I can't remember the other cause I un-installed the silabs stuff...

Now, since I know that wasn't supposed to happen, I am in search of someone who might know or still have drivers for this gps device. It used to work well on my old install, but that was about a day after I got the gps device, so I bet I had drivers that came with it...

Edit - I should add I tried a couple different versions of gpsview, and couldn't figure them out, but saw no data in either programs as well.

It allows you to use steering wheel controls, and cool stuff like open your windows via touchscreen, lock/unlock the doors, etc. Google Resler Ibus for details. This is about 3 years old, but still works great.

Multiple Music Paths across multiple drives

I've looked through RR and cannot find a way to set more then one music path in roadrunner. I tried separating by , ; no luck. I must be an idiot becuse there has to be some way to do this if you have music stored on one drive and have a removable for extra stuff. Anyone have an idea or am I blind and completely missed how this can be done?

I recently started a project of "re-skinning" igo 8 to make it look nice and pretty and so no re-sizing program is required. For my purposes I am making it look like eLite 2 and it will run at 800x420 to leave room at the bottom for the media controls in RR. I eventually want to integrate the indicators, song information, theme, and font settings from RR and elite 2 into igo8.

Anyways I've been working on it for the last week and made quite a bit of progress, but I finally ran into a problem that I could use some help with.

I've created a new settings state which works by turning on and off layers, and it works great except for one thing. When I turn on the layer for setting road types (ie route parameters) it always turns on Highways, Ferries, Cross-Border Planning, Per-use Toll, and Road Tax and it always turns off Unpaved roads, Permit Needed, and Carpool. When I created the layer I copied the original layer. All I did differently was change the x, y, w, h, bmp, and font settings. I have also tried using the old layer instead of the one I created and it has the same problem, so I don't think it's anything in the layer. I went back to my original copy of iGO8 and it works perfectly. I went through all the scripts I have changed and I have not found anything dealing with this.

I know this isn't really an RR question, but I'm hoping someone here can help me figure it out. There doesn't seem to be a whole lot of knowledge out there about skinning iGO8 and how it actually works.

Can I still get LinuxICE 2.0?

I have a question and I am sure you guys on the Linux side can answer. After building a mega multi-zone system and being hit with so many issues, I have decided to pull the setup out and use it as a desktop PC. Thing is, I still want multi-zone. I see that they will be selling the Raspberry Pi for about $35.00. That makes building a multi-zone rig much more affordable and cost effective. Maybe about $100.00 per seat for the setups. Now because these bad boys only use Linux, that means I need a Linux based FE.

So here is where the questions start. I will be asking FE and hardware questions.

1) Will LinuxICE run on the Raspberry Pi. In the FAQ's it says newer version of Ubunti will not commit. Isnt LinuxICE based off an older version, so it will work?

2) The Raspberry Pi runs off of 5V 1amp mini USB power. I was thinking of buying 6 car chargers that meet the specs, but are they regulated? Would I have to supply regulated 12V power? I also have 7 car chargers that run 5V 2amps for the KVMP switches so I want to be sure so I dont kill nothing. Maybe I can take car pc PSU and mod it to power everything?

3) Will LinuxICE work on a SD card?

4) Any other things I should take into account?

Allright boys and girls. I've been wanting to write this for a long time and since I now have everything in hand to build out my Truckputer, I felt that the time is right. So let me give you a bit of a backstory on this...

My wife and I have wanted a truck for a long time so when the time came to trade in our Honda Odessy Touring Edition, I jumped at the chance to get back into a truck. Our Honda was loaded to the gills and the wife got aweful used to the indash nav and touch screen, so one of the requiments for the new truck was to have factory navigation. Searching high and low for the truck we wanted, it was next to impossible to find one with nav since the tsunami destroyed the plant that made Ford factory nav units. So we found the truck we really wanted (without nav...) and the dealer sold us on tacking on $2800 to the cost and they will order a factory nav unit and have it installed, so I figured what the hell. And so starts my factory nav drama. About a month after we got the truck, I got the call that the factory nav was in and to come out and get it installed. I had Veterans day off, so that was the perfect day to get it installed. By the way, the dealer is in Baton Rouge, LA and I live near New Orleans, so it was like 1.5 hrs away. I get there and the owner of the aftermarket shop that ford contracted to shows me what they got for me. IT WAS NOT THE F-150 Nav Unit!!! I was ****ed! They ordered me the 7 inch nav unit that is in expeditions and 2010 F-150s, not the 9 Inch in current F-150s. So after going to the dealership and reaming out the guy who sold me the car, they said they could get me the 9 inch one for another $2,000!!! WTF!!! So, since I was already there, I figured what the hell, lets just install the damn thing and be done with it. So I go back to the shop and they start opening up the dash and they realize that I did not have the sony sound system, with amplifier, like the dealer said when they ordered the Nav unit. So I am told that the unit will not work without being re-programmed and they have to send it off to California to get re-programed and will probably take another month. At that point, I went back to the dealership and demanded my money back. Screw the factory nav. After a lot of back and forth with those guys, I finally got my check for $2800.
I started researching aftermarket navigation units and just was not happy with anything I came across. I didn't like the user interfaces or the restrictions on what it can and can't do. Then I stumbled on mp3car.com and started reading about all the great builds going on and thought to myself, I have a BS in computer Science and a Masters in Systems Engineering. I can do this!

So then came the planning and procuring. I attached pictures of everything I got for the Truckputer. I ran into a bit of a snag with the bezel... Metra makes a double din bezel with the matching wood grain, but on the top where the hazard and airbag warning is, they had two holes instead of the one that is on my dash. So I looked high and low with no luck finding a bezel with the matching woodgrain in the aftermarket world so off to Ford I went. I ordered the double din bezel from them for about $130. Well, stupid me, I didn't realize that Ford uses the Nav unit for climate control and has a different button scheme than what I have (no dials). So that didn't work. I then broke down and ordered a match for the bezel that I already have in the truck so I can cut on it and still be able to restore the truck to factory. In the pictures, you can see the tape where I marked it to cut. I will post pictures after the install to show how it came out. So far, I got one of the hardest parts done (in my opinion of course), which is running power from the engine compartment to the amp location and computer locations. I cut a small hole in a rubber stopper to feed the wires through, so I didn't have to drill into my new truck, but man was that a pain in the a$$. Anyways, let me know what you think!
