I'm not an audiophile or a carpc maniac so forgive me if I couldn't find the info I was looking for elsewhere.

I'm wondering if a tablet mount exists that is installed in a single din opening. Ideally the face of the din mount would have a usb port for charing the tablet and an audio jack or perhaps a bluetooth stereo receiver built into it. It would be most easily shown with a picture and the closest thing I could find was this:
I will build something like this if no reasonable product exists.
Thanks for any tips!

I've been thinking of using a tablet as a carpc because I had some issues with my carpc and do'nt want to invest to much €'s in fixing my carpc.

Obviously most people are using a google tablet or an ipad but I am wondering if there are people out there that have tried a cheapo tablet as a carpc.

I am thinking of an simple tablet that can handle, video, music and function as a navigation (via external gps or android phone). Not more not less! So an ipad would be an overkill I would say

However, there's 7" eBay Android tablets everywhere all day long for £100 which is about what a screen kit costs before delivery.

I've been thinking about replacing my car PC with an android tablet, but one things keeps me away.

I am wondering how telephony gets integrated into the whole mix.
Say I have a tablet in the car. Audio would be hard wired to the 3.5mm audio output into an amp to get music and navigation.

Now I bring my cell phone into the car (another android device). Can the phone somehow connect to the tablet and do all the telephone functions through the tablet? How is that done? Bluetooth?

After staring at my blank touch screen for too long I've decided to swap out the carpc for a tablet. A major reason is that I just don't have the time for windows, I'm a Mac guy.

Even though I'm a Mac guy I'm fairly interested in what android is doing.

I have a MacBook Pro and a iPhone 4S which means I'm still contract tied unless I pay the cancellation fee.

I'm still debating the merits of a 7" or 10" form factor. 7" if I do a semi-permanent I stall or 10" for in-home use.

However the bigger issue I'm debating is which OS to go with?
Android? Or iOS?

A possible deal maker would be hands free but at the moment I've almost cut all my driving time calls. Another would be connectivity to view forums but even then I'm pretty happy with one hand driving and reading.

Any opinions?

so i finally decided to replace my carpc with an android tablet. best decision ever. easiest install too. my only problem is getting a steady 12v to triger automateit to turn on and off wifi, bt and the screen but i ordered a car charge with 12v and 2amps. i bought an open box acer iconia a100 7inch for $175 since i have its big brother already.

i already have two wrt54g one in wireless bridge mode both hacked with ,custom firmware so that one unit is a regular wireless router that connects to wireless devices or wired devices and the other uses the wireless antenna to automatically connect to my cellphone hotspot and is wired to the othe router, they both use 12v so no convesion was neccesary.

with the wireless hotspot on it gets automatically connected by the router, the tablet autoconnects to the route and boom! internet on the tablet while driving and assuming good signal strength.

next is gps. i bought the mkii bluetooth gps and use an app that uses an extenal gps for the tablet. works great with google maps and google navigation.

audio. the audio output could be a cable but i havent disconnected my headunit from the car, it in the storage box below the radio. my dash radio has bluetooth so for now the tablet connects audio to headunit by bluetooth and quality is good plus i dont have to worry about cable being damaged.

a note about bluetooth is that i can have at least two connections at once and im going to try for more. =)

i bought a uebo 200 that uses 12v, can house a 2tb sata drive, usb host for flashdisk or dvd drive, is a dlna server and all over the car network wired or wireless .... plus it has a remote if u place it in the open. cant wait to connect it but keeping fingers ,crossed.

what i will miss is the backup camera on the headunit. the only work around is a slingbox 200 or slingbox solo which has a composite video in for the backup camera and connects to the network so it "should" play on the tablet.

last note is multiple headrest monitors. i already have 2 headrest monitors that have vga input both connected to a powered 4 port vga splitter in the car. the tablet has a mini hdmi port and i bought a mini hdmi to vga converter to get the tablet signal to the other monitors. apparently they're popular for ipad to video projectors.

i think that just covers my current and future plans. when i get stuff in the mail and connect it i will try to update this for those who are interested. questions or comments?

does anyone have a nas arrangement running in their car?
my original plan was to have a tablet as a headunit, with some kind of storage attached directly to it (either sd card or external ssd) but there are limitations with either way
I was also planning on using my phone as a wifi hotspot for data connection rather than having to get a different contract for the car.
My biggest concern with a nas is the time it takes to fire up, maybe it's just the one I have but it likes to take a while! are there any ones good for in car usage? they normally don't like to be switched on and off all the time and they would be in the car

hopefully someone can figure out how to get a nexus or galaxy going with external storage and charging soon, but got to explore the alternatives!

cheers

I've been looking through the tubes of the internets and haven't found a good way to do what i want to have done with my laptop in my car.

I've been looking for the most direct way to push HiFi audio (FLAC) through my car stereo system using a laptop. Looking around the web, a ton of people suggest the AUX port or some other means of using a 3.5mm connection, none of which have good for quality sound. I realize the way to get the sound quality I want, is to push through USB (possibly PCMCIA). I don't mind going to purchase this or that but external sound cards don't seem to have the connections i need to push to the amp.

My amp is a JL 900/5, it has 3 RCA inputs I could use Front L/R, Back L/R and Subwoofer. Everything I look at does not support a separated Sub output.

Traditionally the best way to get the best sound quality is to have the most direct connection possible, so if anyone has any suggestions that would be great.

All laptop/notebook carpc users, I need your testimonials and reviews here, specifically on DURABILITY (to me the most important thing in carPC's).
prob
I know that powering the laptop is a big hurdle when using a laptop as a carPC, i haven't done MUCH looking around yet but it looks like you can find a DC/DC solution, either the easy way or the hard way (opening up laptop and soldering wires, etc).

But what I really need is for the laptop users to give me your experience with the durability/reliability of your laptops, also, where do you keep your laptop? Under you seat, in the trunk, etc? Also, what kind of cushioning/mounting system do you use, is there anything you do to reduce shock/vibration from affecting the hard drive? That was my main problem with my carPC was the shock/vibrations, causing booting issues, and finally yesterday i think my motherboard died due to my frustration :( My carPC receives power, the fans spin, hard drive spins, but i get no video out. Maybe it is the VGA port that f-cked up, i'll try using HDMI to see if the motherboard is still functioning and the computer is still booting, but I think i am done with desktops in the car, laptops "SEEM" like the way to go since they were built to be MOBILE.

Thinking about buying a used laptop, anybody know any rugged laptops that would be ideal for vehicles? I remember IBM making a durable line of laptops, problem is i don't think rugged laptops are affordable haha, who knows, i'll have to look around.

Now tell me about your experiences everybody!!!! PLEASE!!! :crutch:

G'day everyone,

The last guy who put a NC in his Jeep craigbru directed me here for a more tech oriented community than the Jeep forums.

I am trying to dash install into a space that's no wider than a standard DIN and can't easily be modified to be any wider without really hacking things up. Unfortunately the PCB of the nook (which I wish to keep in landscape orientation) is an inch or so bigger!

What I am planning on doing is separating the PCB from the LCD and running the board back horizontally (ie: deep into the dash). I am going to get and gut a two din car stereo, affix a flat piece of ABS on its front behind which the display will be mounted and the board can sit on risers and run along the depth of the stereo box (it will poke out the end slightly, but I will mod some plastic protection.

This involves extending the LVDS and the touch interface ribbons. My question is - will extending these alter impedance to such an extent as to cause me any drama? If so I will have to mount it some other way (read modify the dash extensively).

Hello Everyone,

So I am in a little dilemma...

I decided to purchase the FitPc 2 2.0 GHz computer for my 2005 Subaru Legacy. I have everything working great on windows 7 with Centrafuse 4.0. My only issue and concern is that this model does not support Wol so I am not able to turn it off. The computer runs all day and all night. For now my car battery is not having any issues starting up in the morning. My question is how long will it take for this FitPc to drain the battery at idle? I did some research and it said it idles around 7-8 watts. If anyone could help me with a break down of a normal car battery which I have and how long it would take to cause the battery to die would be much appreciated.

Also I am probably going to buy the FitPc 2i version that does support WOL so I can actually put it to sleep and wake it back up with an Xobyte power regulator. If anyone is interested I am willing to give them a good deal on the FitPC 2. The FitPC 2 is in perfect condition. The only thing that was altered was the power cord when I used it in the car. I re-spliced it so it is now operational again for home use.

Here are the specs: CompuLab fit-PC2 2GB/2GHz (rev 1.4) Atom Z550 2 GHz, RAM 2 GB, bay for 2.5" SATA HDD

If you have any questions feel free to give me a shout and please let me know about the power issue. Thank you!

Obviously power consumption and heat is less with the atoms. But while i'm using my car i wouldn't think the little bit more power it uses from an atom to an i3 would be much of a problem. Since HP announced the release of the webOS source code, the recently abandoned operating system has grown a rather loyal following. Progress has been made in homebrew development and in custom builds for webOS native devices. Many forum members have been clamoring for a port of webOS to Android devices for several months now. Initial ports were expected to appear for the Motorola Droid or its GSM counterpart, the Milestone, since the devices share the same OMAP3 3430 processor with the Palm Pre (the very first native webOS device).Recently an HTC EVO 3D was spotted running a build of webOS 3.0, the version that came with the notorious HP TouchPad. Originally posted by Ryan Hope (@_puffthemagic_) on Twitter, the 3 still images of webOS running have now been supplemented with a YouTube video that can be found here. While not functional enough for actual use, the operating system boots without issue. Ryan originally started work on the port before HP released the source code for webOS. With the release of both the Android kernel and the full webOS source porting progress can only move forward from here. Could this mean widespread availability of webOS ports on Android devices soon? Depending on interest level and developer involvement, it is a possibility!

That's very exciting, can't wait to see more Android devices running WebOS. Why? I can give you an example.

One of the things I hate about Android in the car (Honeycomb or ICS) is the little home and back buttons at the bottom of the screen. Physical buttons are a must, and in that dept. the Ipad is better than nothing.

HP's Touchpad however, running WebOS 3.0.5 is much better. Besides having the hardware button, like the iPad, it also makes it easy switching, closing and opening apps, using just gestures. The so called "card interface" works much, much better than the icon collection present in most iOS and Android Devices (Icon cum widgets). No back buttons needed: just slide your fingers UP and then you're in the card view: flick to one side or the other and chose the app, etc.

With Android, if I'm in the Nav interface, and I want to switch to Pandora, I have to find that damn home/back button.

If the port is successful, and the community stays behind it, I predict more and more apps will be available. I just really need a good NAV app and a DLNA app and I'm done.

Greetings,

I apologize if this has been asked before, but I was interested in how bad this would be.

I installed a car computer in my wife's car with mixed results. Love having the computer, but I am annoyed by waiting for it to boot before I get music and a few other things. So for my car, I thought I would retain the head unit and have the computer play all its sound through that. I read the section on this website where basically tablets are pretty iffy when used as a car computer, but that concerned Android or iPad style tablets. It seems to me that a tablet PC solves some of those issues, but is it powerful enough?

I figured I would use some spare parts I have from my wife's install (motherboard, RAM, CPU, HDD), but I wanted a larger screen. I can actually buy a complete tablet PC for less than the cost of a 10.4" screen and it will have a responsive touch screen and take up less space in the car, not to mention, I could remove it and use it elsewhere. So it is very attractive.

But if I go this route, all I would have is the audio out port on the PC. Would that sound like crap fed into the aux in on a head unit? If I wanted to play a DVD, I presume it isn't possible to get surround sound out of an audio out port, right? I suppose I could get a USB sound card, but I had a real problem with noise when I did this on my wife's car computer. Then there is the thought, can a tablet even play a DVD or will it just glitch?

What about navigation? There are only 3 USB ports on the tablet I'm considering. Will that be glitchy too? I haven't ever used a tablet.

I was also thinking about putting a car camera in, for when I go auto crossing. Could it handle that with a USB DVR connected to it?

It's really hard to resist the attractive price of the table and the perfect size (for my car) but if it is too frustrating to use, I would prefer to build my own, but I've also always wanted a really nice stereo, so I'm unwilling to compromise sound quality by just using some noisy computer interface.

Would it be a good idea to get a head unit that played DVD's and had navigation to remove the burden from the tablet? If so, do I really need a tablet? I could use some advice here.

Comments please. Leave the flames for a different poster.:yum:

Hi guys. I guess this is half an introduction post and half a project brainstorming post. I've lurked the site for ages now and gleamed as much info as I could squeeze into these brain cells. :)

With that said, I have been awaiting the day where the planets align and I can start with my own CarPC project. Likely after the holidays and the tax season hits I will probably have my first car. Not sure exactly what yet, will be a wait and see thing. So I plan to start here.

Over the past week I have been contemplating build options and the one that keeps coming back to me is this Cr-48 Chromebook that I have had since Google beta'd the platform. Here's the relevant specs FWIW:

Code:

1.66GHZ Single core, hyperthreaded Atom N455
Intel GMA3150 graphics embedded in the Atom chip
2GB RAM
16GB mSATA SSD (Will likely have it upgraded to a 60GB if this comes to pass)
802.11n, Bluetooth, integrated GSM/CDMA 3G modem (though this will be phased out and replaced with something else, more on that later)
58.4Wh battery which provides around 6-7 hours of battery in Windows under light load with screen brightness max, Wifi and 3G active
AC adapter reads output at 19.5V/2.05A which is roughly ~40W max consumption
VGA port, SD card slot, 1x USB, combined 3.5mm TRRS headphone/mic port
12.1" screen size, extremely thin just under an inch closed
Lid switch has distinct power on/power off behaviors. Completely powered off, opening the lid will turn it on. And closing it behaves like any normal notebook (ie: responds to Windows power settings)

I guess one of the primary reasons why I keep coming back to this particular machine for the project is the insane boot times. Even though the stock SSD is rated as a low grade model (considering these were given away, I wouldn't expect even Google to be spendy on SSDs. :P), with UEFI boot a clean windows install boots fast enough that the animated flag doesn't even have time to appear. I can't recall what hibernate speeds were like though. I should take some time to switch back over to Win7 from ChromeOS and do some more situational tests.

Overall system performance is really amazing given the specs. Outside of gaming everything is pretty responsive and snappy. Multitasking is good.

The other thing is the power consumption. With the battery life and the charging consumption, could very easily get away with the charger (likely going to look for a replacement that runs directly off 12V DC) running directly off an ACC powered line and a basic startup/shutdown controller. To add to it, I'd probably disconnect the LCD completely in favor of a proper in-dash touch. So battery life will probably gain another hour or so based on existing experience.

A couple things I am pondering though as potential issues that I could use some input on:

1) Usual Windows 7 issues in the CarPC environment. Returning from hibernate straight to a desktop rather than needing to manually log back in. Amongst other things if anyone can think of any!

2) Peripherals: Lack of connections. Being there is only a single USB2 port, my current idea is to remove the 3G modem and get a breakout card which adds an extra USB and an extra SATA port to the system. Although both require an external source of 5V power so would have to jump on a regulator of some sort. The 3G modem is able to be sacrificed because in Windows it is pretty much bunk anyways without a lot of messing around. That and I already have a Mifi with service that I would like to fabricate a cradle for so jumping in the car I can just drop it in a slot in the dash and voila! Or a USB3.0 card which provides 2 USB 3.0 ports and no sata, but it is backwards compatible and should provide 5V power. Beyond that: Add a few powered hubs and go!

Anything else I am possibly missing? Any bits of useful input? Main use is likely the usual: Music, nav, phone, mild web, little to no video, obd... I'll try and post some photos/video if possible if I get around to playing more with this idea!

Ciao! :)

I'm really surprised there isn't more talk about these tablets in the forums. Maybe there is a reason why?

Anyway, here is my plan.

Buying a view anywhere LS800 tablet along with either a 8.9" resistive or capacitive overlay. I want to tear the tablet apart and fabricate it into my dash like my last build (not a tablet though). Is there any reason this shouldn't work out? I can't find any internal shots of this tablet. I'm assuming I would just have to extend a few cables to seperate the screen from the rest of the unit.

Any advice or guidance on this plan?

Just saved $600.00 and bought two 16GB for $99 each - 32GB is going for $149. Then I'll see what happens.

The reason of course is because HP dropped everything WebOS related. For $99.00, I think just the IPS screen is worth that alone, better than any cheap Chinese knock-off tablet. Maybe it will replace my headrests, for the rear entertainment system, maybe the community will figure out a way to do it, maybe somebody (Vizio?) will buy WebOS from HP and start selling tablets. Will see.

Deal link.

Free shipping too. Should be here in 5-7 days.

Hope this helps. Unless you're set on a big screen Android (and you have the $$$ money); from $399 to $99? I think this is a great deal, all things considered even.

Cheers,

Hello everyone, Now, I've just gotten into the Android game. I have a HTC Desire, but I want more (no surprise, :) )
Normally, I'd post such a question at my favorite forum, but unfortunately, it is down, and I was hoping you guys here could help out.
It's a 7" android 2.3 tablet from a China site: ** Link Removed **
1) It's cheap. Half the price of branded tablets
2) People say that it can out-perform the iPad in certain areas.
3) The size seems to be just about right, a good compromise between portability and legibility
Now, I don't really need all the features that other tablets have, namely the 3g/4g wireless connectivity. I was just looking to use this at home, or at my grandparent's place (Where the computers there are absolutely ancient!) just for web browsing, facebooking, and the occasional game of Angry Birds.
Now, to the question. How does this stand up to other tablets of today? (Examples would be iPad, maybe iPad 2, XOOM, Galaxy Tab (7 inch and 10 inch)
I know that this tablet can be overclocked to 1.3 ghz and more which puts it to the same clock speed as most of today's tablets, except for they have dual core processors. How much of a difference would it make? Also, It can play a lot of high end android games when overclocked (Tegra 2 games?). However, I'm sure all the rooting and overclocking is bound to kill the battery. The original battery is said to last 8 hours with WiFi off. If Overclocked, and with WiFi, can I expect to have 5-6 hours of constant usage? Also, assuming it does last about 5 hours overclocked, I know that there are some kernels that allow for the tablet to be a USB Host, meaning keyboard, camera, and (maybe) mouse support. But such devices require power to be used, so can I expect 3-4 hours?
Thanks for your time to read this long writing, If anybody with a mid-high end android tablet can give some suggestions would be great, thanks a lot!

So I love audio and video. I love it for HT and spend massive amounts of cash there, I love it in my car so I spent massive amounts of cash there.

But I havent been happy with my playback options from a high-end audiophile position. I like FLAC as my main format and then use a Zune for playback. But I have limited options when it comes to accessories.

So I got a thought in my head of, well if you want FLAC which computer programs will play, why not just get a cheap inexpensive netbook/laptop, transfer all your songs onto it (both FLAC and MP3's) and have it be your player.

I currently have 2 amps one for my fronts, one for my sub. My rears as disconnected currently. My plan was to get a laptop running Windows 7 (so it can serve as a laptop if needed), install Media Monkey or XMBC and then be able to use one of those 3 players for music playback. I was also going to get a Asychronus USB to RCA Digital Audio Converter (like the Musiland Monitor 01 or the HRT Media Streamer) for better sound, and connect that direct to my amp. This bypasses my current system but still leaves it in place.

I have a Windows Media Center remote that I would use to start with for changing songs, and use the screen for viewing if needed. Then eventually I would get a 7 or 10" touchscreen so I could hide the laptop elsewhere, and use a suction cup mount for the LCD.

I would run power to the laptop off a cigarette lighter to plug adaptor (as well as for the USB DAC if needed)

So I found a decently cheap laptop with an Solid State Drive and am debating purchasing it. Its got a 10" screen and Windows 7.

But I have some questions so I thought this would be where to post them.

1. Platter Hard Drives can skip and have issues due to drops so I assume its recommended to go with a Solid State drive correct? I ask because its obviously easier to find a inexpensive (i.e. Craiglist) netbook with a regular HDD than a Solid State one. Also SSD's are more expensive and have less space.

2. Has anyone used a USB to RCA DAC like the ones mentioned above in this context? I know they would work, and also provide the sound fidelity I am looking for, but wanted to check.

3. Anything else I missed (which is probably a lot since this is my first go around with this idea)..

I greatly appreciate any comments/suggestions.

Hey guys!
I am new in here, and these requirements are part of my first ever car project or even any damn thing that I've done in life!

Basically, all I want for the moment is something to grant me access to my car's ignition only after I input a 4 digit code, either into my android tablet (that's already fitted as my in-car infotainment device) or an separate/standalone Arduino UNO.

-when I key-in, and turn the ignition lock to "ON", I want either the tablet or the arduino to ask me the 4 digit lock code
-when I punch in the correct code, the engine should start by itself or have access for an electronic push button start

I was thinking of hacking into my ignition harness and install in-between a relay switch which can be operated through the tablet or the arduino. Correct me anywhere you feel like. Because my idea is more of a fantasy, rather than practical use. But I guess, that's the purpose of this website, huh?

If I am able to execute this small wish properly, I want to go further by trying to control my power windows.

If this thing is already built or someone out there is tryin to accomplish the same stuff, please help me witha link or help me with your better-ideas and your valuable inputs.

Thanks a lot! Looking forward for all your replies.

P.S. - I have 2010 Chevrolet Spark with ZTE-V9 android tablet in perfect harmony with each other using Torque and ELM-327 Bluetooth OBD-II adapter.

While brainstorming to save some space, I thought I may be able to mount the battery vertically instead of horizontally. All the pins on the battery seem to make good contact with the motherboard.

I'm starting on my third car PC install. While I have the parts for a traditional install I was thinking that maybe there is a better way. I see the future of car PC as more integrated with the tablets we will all be carrying around.

I think the idea I have in mind can be accomplished with today's tech, but I'm unsure on a couple of areas.

Here is what I'd like to do:

Have the headunit be a tablet PC that I can remove from the car.
Build a mount for the tablet where the headunit would go.
Use bluetooth to get information from ODBII, keyboard, etc
GPS and WiFi on the tablet
Radio from the tablet.

Use bluetooth to output audio to a sound processor and amplifiers (this may need to remain connected for sound quality purposes using HDMI, SPDIF, etc)

One thing I like with my car PC is using the fusion brain and inputs, I'm not sure how those would work in this senerio, probably just USB to start.

At the point where all the above would be working any tablet should be able to be swapped as the head unit. So if someone else was driving the car they could connect their tablet (with all their music, setting, etc)

It seems I'm missing something big here, why are more people not doing this?

Hi,

I'm a long time computer geek but new to the CarPC arena. We're getting a Toyota Sienna. It would be nice if I could find a device that would allow simultaneous display of Navigation on the built in display (of the tablet/UMPC, not the vehicle) while sending a video file playback output to a display(s) in the back seat. The idea is that I would have a bunch of kid videos that we can control playback from the front while also using it for Navi.

I'm sure this can all be done with an elaborate CarPC setup, but I don't really have time for a whole project around that right now. Does anyone know if any android or other tablet or UMPC could do this with the right software? I'm thinking not, because most devices probably only have 1 video buffer.

Thanks!

A tablet style PC, maybe 7-10", with an available permanent mount car dock. The car dock would have audio in/out cables, USB, power, etc. Basically, what I'm thinking is that as soon as you slip the tablet into the dock, it's connected to the car, with no individual cables to plug in.

I have a car mount for my HTC EVO, which has the power built in. I just slide the phone into the cradle and it's automatically hooked to the 12v power.

I plan on buying a Motorola Atrix when i return home in a few months.. I have been wanting to build a CarPC for about 4-5 years and never really got around to it.. The Atrix has the ability of being able to be a "PC" when coupled with the webtop dock..

Here is a preliminary plan I am going to use..

The biggest problems I see are

1. Power, how will it turn on / shut down.
2. screen.. As far as i know there is no front end for Android.. I think i will be stuck using the stock interface, which i have no idea looks like.

I currently have a Archos 101 android tablet which i like, I don't think it would be to different interface.

EDIT: It looks as if the car dock has a app that runs when you plug it in.. I wonder if I can get this to run and output to the external screen

They seem to be a wholesaler for many of the laptop accessories being sold on ebay right now. In particular I noticed this dvd drive which seems to have decent specs and only $65.99. I googled this company and found no much review about this website. Does anyone have any experience with them? No results when I searched this board.

***THIS IS FOR A 3 SCREEN, 3 USER SYSTEM!***
Okay, so originally I was looking at (and foolishly purchased) an EEE (901ha???) netbook. I found that it was not capable of running video of any significant resolution.
I then looked into splitting the duty of my main CPU between the three screens, but that presents problems when running multiple instances of the same program and also multiple individual audio lines. So I trashed that plan (luckily before spending any money this time).
So then I was stuck as to what to do and finally landed on a main CPU and two UMPCs for the "secondary" functions. The secondary systems would access the same HDD as the main CPU for music and movies, but only the main would be doing anything else.
So I just need a UMPC that is of decent size (8.9" 1024x600 or better), touch screen, fanless (headrest mounted), Windows 7 capable (to network right with the main CPU), wireless, and is capable of processing and displaying full HD and/or encoded (DIVX and the like) videos and playing audio for music. So, totally easy right? Apparently not. To get a UMPC supposedly capable of this costs more than the laptop I am currently writing this on, and when I read reviews they are NOT actually capable of what is claimed. I am speaking in this case specifically of the Archos 9 ( http://reviews.cnet.com/tablets/arch...ml#reviewPage1 ) which SHOULD be capable but reviews say is not. Also, the 1024x600 would match my planned in dash (main CPU) display ( http://www.doublesight.com/product/?idx=53 ), which theoretically should simplify things.
SO - since I cannot use the Archos, and the EEE can't do it, either, what do you all suggest I look into next?
I don't need much "extra" functionality, what I mentioned should cover all my bases.
Also, if it matters at all the secondary screens will display only videos and play music per the viewer's choice OR if chosen on the main screen should just duplicate the display of the main CPU, like a secondary (mirrored?) monitor.
Sorry I always talk too much.

Weeee!! I'm a huge fan of the BlackBerry phones and one of the few of my friends who has yet to cross over to the dark side (iPhone and Android).

No prices announced yet, but it definitely looks plenty powerful for Car Computing, and a much better size to integrate into the dash compared to an iPad.... Any thoughts?
Samsung finally announced that all four major US carriers would be getting Tabs to call their own. There are four touch buttons on the front side, a headphone jack on the top edge and a volume rocker, microSD card slot and power button on the right edge. However, we don't see why Samsung couldn't have made room for a micro-USB port -- you have to charge it and sideload content using Samsung's proprietary charging cable.

The overall build of the device is top-notch, and though it may appear to some like an enlarged Captivate or Fascinate, it feels more solid than those plasticy phone.

The Tab doesn't have a Super AMOLED screen like its Galaxy S smartphone brothers, but the 1024 x 600-resolution LCD is still stunning. It's notably better than most other tablet screens we've seen of late, which, of course, means that the first thing we noticed was its stellar viewing angles. (You know us and our hang-up with viewing angles.) Tilting the screen off-axis doesn't cause color distortion and sharing it with a friend didn't require us to make any adjustments.

The display itself is extremely bright and colors appear extremely crisp. While some have complained that it looks a bit oversaturated, you can adjust the color saturation in the display settings to your liking. As with the iPad, it's hard to make out what's on the glossy display in the sun, but when we took to shooting some video around New York City on a sunny day we were still able to make out all the controls. While the Tab's resolution isn't as high as the iPad's 1024 x 768-resolution IPS panel, the screen does have better pixel density, which translate to a crisper e-book and webpage reading experience than the iPad. (You know how some of us feel about pixel density.)

Just like the Galaxy S phones, the capacitive screen is extremely responsive, and as we said in our preview, easily matches the iPad in terms of sensitivity

All good news indeed. I can see this one being much easier to install than an iPad. I could see this one better on my Infiniti, in the overhead console, since widescreen is so much better anywhere in the dash (as far as easy of installation goes).

However, software support that enjoys the extra screen real state appears to be a concern. Let's see what happens.

Hey, guys, I am newbie here and want to say hello to everyone first of all.
I am looking for a tablet with android system and want to buy one for my study. But my budget is a little tight since I'm still a student now. I had a look on the Internet and found 2 android tablets, they are http://www.tinydeal.com/google-andro...05-p-6320.html and http://www.tinydeal.com/google-andro...03-p-7684.html
I think the first one is a little like iPad, maybe is it a copy? Which one would be better and more pratical? Will it be a good choice to choose such a tablet? Could you offer me some professional advice? Thanks in advance.

So, you got this cool carpc that's a double din HU with a touch screen straddled to the front .... where do you put the DVD player or dvd drive? Most units have a motorized touch screen or a really small slot at the top, but the touch screen front faces that I've seen in the store don't have that ... so assuming lot's of people by that kind of kit ... where do you put the DVD-drive/player??

I’ve been thinking about my current carpc build recently. It’s dangerous to think too much as things change.
What I originally wanted was a computer that I could use indoors, check emails, surf the ‘net and then plug into my car and use it as a carpc. My original idea was the OQO V2 but unfortunately it appears the company has gone under. The idea meant as I was walking to the car I could start up the front end, get into the car, plug in display, external HDD and a usb device or two. Listen to my music or radio on the way to work. Unplug pc and take into work allowing me to use pc during breaks etc. OK, the OQO screen was a tad small but the idea was set. With the advent of the iPad, tech companies have been bringing out Android umpc and my ideas are beginning again. So I found this ARCHOS 9 which runs windows7 and is a fully functioning pc running an atom chip (Z515).
Is this capable of running a frontend, external HDD (for music), OBDII and maybe GPS or a recording video camera? Thoughts, concerns…

I am planning to buy a tablet to use it as carPC in my car. There are lot a advantage to use tablet as Carpc, it saves lots of wiring and it can be used as tablet when we are not using it in car. My main usage is GPS while driving, music, video, movies, internet. So below is my requirement.

It should have GPS mainly A-GPS as i google maps require internet and it was not available at every place here.
3G with Edge support(Mainly use it at house where i get 3G.
If it comes with android then it should have atleast android 2.1, so can update to Froyo when available.
RAM should be above 512Mb, HDMI is not main priority. Should have good sound output quality.

I have another concern about sound output, all tablet have 3.5mm jack sound output, so is it possible to use this output with basic car sound setup. I heard that ohms of such devices are low, so we wont get loud sound with car sound. Is it possbile to use these devices with car amplifier to improve sound quality.
Any forum member who have experience with tablets carPC please share your experince and thought about this. Please suggest such tablet which can be used as CarPC. Thanks in advance.

I have some preliminary specs for a carpc that I want to build. This would be simple except that I want more power than a mobile cpu and mobile pc can handle, unless I'm wrong, you guys tell me.

I'm building a carPC to basically run Emulators of the PS2 and Wii, later on I'll add Emu's for PSP and xbox. The following are my specs:

1) ZOTAC GF8200-C-E AM2+/AM2 NVIDIA GeForce 8200 Mini ITX AMD Motherboard - uses desktop CPU - 8GB max DDR2 - pcie 1x - geforce 8 onboard - integrated wifi

2) AMD Phenom 9850 2.5GHz Socket AM2+ 125W Quad-Core - need the power because some emu's need the gfx to be done by software and not hardware

3) TOSHIBA MK3265GSX 320GB 5400 RPM 2.5" SATA 3.0Gb/s Internal Notebook - plenty of space for iso's and roms.

4) M350 Universal Mini-ITX enclosure by Mini-Box - will it have the space for the cpu fan???

5) a power supply that handles 200w.

The cpu is 125w, the hdd is 8w that leaves 60w for everything else.

My questions are:
1) Do I have the power requirements right?
2) How do I handle cpu cooling or does the regular cpu fan fit inside??
3) Do I need extra fans inside?

Any other suggestions would be appreciated!

Having everything stolen changed my point of view... while I like the idea of the iPad... I'd rather have something with a little more user functionality. iPads are really just big iphones... and I am honestly offended at the data rates ATT is charging for the things.

I found this... not sure about the release date, but it looks like a viable and affordable option.
Overall, I'm very satisfied using the S10-3t. The LED touchscreen is very responsive to touches and the screen is very readable in direct sunlight, even at 70-80% brightness setting.

The netbook came with an extended 6-cell battery which makes the netbook longer than it needs to be. Still waiting for Lenove to release the 3-cell battery for purchase so the battery will be flush with the netbook chassis.

Help please.

I can't get windows installed onto the SSD on an Acer Aspire One AOA110-AB from my usb stick. The windows installation on it previously messed up, I reinstalled on an NTFS partitiion only to discover it was unsuitable so I wiped it clean again.
It won't format properly either from the windows USB stick but I have got hiren's boot cd on usb so i can use all the facilities on there. They don't seem to be working either even though I can format correctly to FAT32.

Setup has determined that Drive c: is corrupted and cannot be repaired

Press f3 to restart etc etc

^^^^
That's the error I get when it's inspecting the drives right at the start of the installation. I can't get past it.

What can I try next?

Any help would be great.
Thanks

1.Can I use my Carnetix-p1900 to power it?
2.Can I use the backlit keyboard and mouse still?
3. How dificult will this be to setup?
4. Has this ever been done before?

I already had most everything needed except a motherboard and processor and I found out my macbook pro needs a new logic board so I figured why not use it as a carputer. I would like to mount it in between the center console and the dash.

Sadly no BT to make it a hands-free device for your phone and no GPS to make it a PND but both may be possible by connecting your phone into its USB port.

The device runs all of over 1000 apps designed for the Chumby and apps can be created using Flash Lite and submitted to the Chumby store, similar to but probably not as convoluted as submitting iPhone apps.

Considering how compact and inexpensive the device is and fulfills most hardware requirements to make it a viable CarPC, can anyone see any drawbacks with using this as apposed to any current solutions?

I have a mimo 7" monitor with webcam and mic integrated that plugs straight into usb. Fits almost perfectly into my dash opening. It was the computer I was taking to work. I'm just concerned with it getting too hot. I need a way to ensure it will run cool. It has vista and I don't want to run that. Was thinking about putting a copy of xp on it (not sure if I can get all the drivers for xp though). Should be fast like that. Any thoughts? I would like to run it off a car adapter. Don't want to disassemble it and integrate anything into the power button if I don't have to. Is there a way to power it on without having to modify the motherboard?

Just had to spead the word on my new investment,

First off i've had a laptop in my car for about 5 years now it was a old Dell Lattitute that i'd imagion is 9 years old now. It always had a problem playing wma, bit glitchy - thats how old it is :)

but it was my little baby and i loved her, but everything ends and i decided to upgrade.
And omg, the new laptop is soooo handy.

I got myself a Dell D410 with a docking station. It has no problem handling CF 3.1 and the best bit is the on-board blue tooth works flawlessly with my iphone! (volumes a bit low, but hey)

I got the mulitimedia docking station and it was so easy to hotwire the on-off controls. Best bit is, it has a headphone jack if you want to link it to your aux in on your headunit. I use an I-mic usb sound card cause i think its the best.

It starts from hibernation in about 15 sec. and the whole lot cost me 200 euro including shipping.

the laptop has 2GB of ram and 2Ghz CPU. VERY quite and the docking station has a battery port so you can have 2 batteries with the setup if you want :)

So handy to docking it when i want it in the car and undock it when i want it in the dock, no cables to disconnect!!!

Regards

Here is how to mod your IBM T43 Keyboard so that you have remote power off...

UPDATE: 26-MAR-2010

In trying to make the laptop even better, I've made some changes. Now I've totally ripped out the KeyBoard Circuit and directly soldered to the MB Header. In addition, I've removed the Modem harness, and soldered directly from the Keyboard Header to the Modem Socket. This allows for a simpler On/Off connection. See Photos

You must remove the modem harness if you plan on using the modem socket to connect the switch to... which is much cleaner than wires hanging out. This also only allows for On/Off. You must make sure your power management console allows for shutdown when power button is pressed. Have fun!

Here are the updated Photos first...

I hacked apart my T43 keyboard, but before I did that, I installed VNC server as well as setup a static IP address so that I can use my IPhone to sill do what I need to (or my REAL laptop).

First I ripped apart my keyboard to find the traces to the ON/OFF switch, simple, followed the ribbon cable to the pins. Verified with an continuity tester (VOM) and found the pins that were used. Soldered 2 wires to it and done. Video Included at the end.... here are the pics

Hope this saves just 1 keyboard from the fate mine had... the T61 was a sample pic of what it looked like before I started.

Well, I am trying to hack (unsuccessfully so far) the LE series Docking Station (D002) for Motion Computing LE series tablets.

This is the thing:

I'd like to hide the dock somewhere in the car (console/dash) and use just one plug to charge and connect the tablet to other devices (JoyCon steering wheel interface, GPS, External HD, 3G phone for Internet Access, or even other computer via wired network).

However, they're basically flat flexible cable (FFC) which are very thin, with very little space between conductors (.5 to 2mm).

Here's the connector between the tablet and the dock:

And here is the dock connector:

I called Motion Computing and they confirmed me they're proprietary connectors made just for them. They do not follow any standard, and the tech support in US does not have spares around...so no deal. Maybe the manufacturer might have them, but even then, to solder the connectors back into the board would be nearly impossible, I think. Too many and too densely packed.

Here's how the Flat cable is connected to the Docking Connector. This is where I'd like to extend:

Here is the dock, it rotates from portrait to landscape, thus this:

Fully extended, the Flat Cable is about 12in. Too short, I think. That's what I'd need to extend.

Here is some more detail on the pitch between the contacts. What kind of connectors are those? I know they're ZIF or LIFs, but they're not like those here (Molex.com), which are more common I think:

I'm thinking maybe I could disregard the thinner contacts and extend only the thicker ones and see what happens, what works and what don't.

I would sand the plastic film that covers the contacts, solder some wires to it, secure them and solder on the other side of the connector. Thing is, I'd have to sever the wire to actually test it, and if not, my dock would turn into a brick...:)

I've read some FAQ's here on how to extend LCD cables, but not much into extending FLAT cables (lots of dead links/pictures).

http://www.mp3car.com/vbulletin/lcd-...cable-faq.html

This sounds more promising, though:

http://www.molex.com/molex/products/...e=Introduction

I could disconnect those ZIFs here:

And use an extension instead...Each has 40 pins, but where do I find them?

Has anyone ever done something like this? I'm working on search engines now, but any help, much appreciated.

Cheers,

So I bought a tablet PC, the Motion Computing LE1700, a dock with VGA, 3 USB ports, Audio and network ports. I'd like to be able to build a cable...

So I bought a tablet PC, the Motion Computing LE1700, a dock with VGA, 3 USB ports, Audio and network ports. I'd like to be able to build a cable between the Tablet and the dock, so that I can hide the dock elsewhere.

I'm looking, but I can't find this anywhere. Do you know what kind of connector is this? Aparently there are 49 contact points (24/25), or if each side is a different connector, (48/50 top) 98 contacts total.

One picture is the connector on the dock, the other is the one on the computer.

I'm not sure this is doable, I'd like to find something like this:

Or this:

So that I could build my own extension. I've found this manufacturer of connector for docking stations/motherboards:

http://www.hirose-connectors.com/con...connectors.htm

But I'm not even sure what to look for. The Motion Computing dock connector seems to be much simpler than most there.

I had mine done last year I did it over the winter and the power supply went poop. Well I since took it out and threw out my sub box and made a fiberglass box and did a lot of other changes to the car. Somehow my carpc setup got lost and I can't find it.
I'm looking to do the same thing again but on a budget for sure. I have a vga touchscreen flip up in the dash still and I need a simple setup to run centrafuse and do gps. I will also need a power supply and startup/shutdown controller.
I was thinking of maybe doing an asus eee pc 7" laptop. I am not sure so I'm looking for some suggestions.
I don't want to get too crazy with money and I don't want 30lbs of wires and such as it's my toy and I'm trying to keep it on the "lighter" side.

I had to import this thing from Japan so everything in the box is a little hard for me to read.
I think this thing has some potential for a very unique Carputer, but perhaps that is jsut my wishful thinking.

So I've stalked these forums on and off for like a year but the past month i have spent way too much time on here and i think its time i made a post. I'm looking to start a project and i have a spare laptop laying around due to my mother spilling coffee on it and trashing the keyboard. i happened to be 5 hours away and instead of toughing it out without a computer for a few days she just bought a new on. Free computer i thought id use for my first project. Ive watched the Mp3 car videos and i saw the one "hibernating you laptop with the cnx-p2140". My question to all of you is.. Hibernating vs. complete shut down? the reason i ask that is because is seems that my bios doesnt support hibernating much like the video. if someone can help me that would be awesome. i know ill think of more questions after i get this answer. Thanks guys!....and gals???? seems kinda like a guy thing i guess

Wow damn near 10 years later I finally found a good carputer setup... NONE at all. Ripped it all out today and replaced it with a Motorola Cliq (Google Android Phone).
Why the cliq and not the nexus one or droid from verizon. Cliq has a built in keyboard, has been around for over a year and is still a top ranked android device and is very easy to use.

After years of spending thousands trying to develop something stable, practical, usable and most importantly affordable I have to say this device has got me thinking. Carputer no more.
My android phone is ten times more capable then any carputer I have ever installed. Granted it can't play DVD's, but who here has DVD's anymore anyway. Netflix and internet streaming are the thing of the future and android will be sure to support them thanks to the huge open source type of project it is.

Today I used a program on my android called WAZE. It is a social network type of Open GL GPS navigation program. That's right crowd sourced GPS, with traffic alerts, road speed determination, user defined traffic reports (similar to trapster) and best of all it's free. I also have ALK Co-Pilot installed on my android and found that waze is much more accurate at providing efficient routes (surprisingly). Waze does require an internet connection and Co Pilot does not. Other than that waze definitely has copilot beat.

Android is surely the thing of the future with limitless possiblities as was hoped with the carputer but developement never seemed to keep up with technology and seems to really lag when it comes to wireless features such as bluetooth phone support and internet capabilities. My android will not need a BT connection to any external device since it is an all in one thing.

Oh yeah, did I mention it streams Pandora Radio. I have been using this all week and I can't be more impressed. Yesterday My kid watched toy story streamed from the net using a program called lukluk.

I know it seems like I may be bragging but I am just trying to find an opposing opinion.
Now of course screen size doesn't compare to what you can have with your carputer. Even the screen size of the carputer provides challenges for less experienced car modders. But if you can handle using a tom-tom or garmin device surely an android is well suited for you.
What about the iphone. Not even close, had it on at&t and I got to say that sucked. Att service blows (unavailable support on the weekends:ballchain:?). The iphone apps are not nearly as available as android will be. Googles commitment to free information will assure this with a lot of ad supported or information sharing type programs. Which doesn't seem to be all to concerning for most facebookers and twits lately.

Any way what do you think, am I on the wrong path.. I don't think so...
These new phones are definitely the carpc killers of tomorrow or maybe even today.

My original idea for a carpc explained better

So I'm in the planning stage for a carputer system for my 2008 Sequoia.

I want something big up front, but I plan to keep the headunit. So it's not going to be an integrated solution.

I want a big transflective screen, but I'm not willing to pay for those currently in the market. They're small and over priced. I'd rather buy TWO screens, a cheap 7" regular one in the overhead console for night time viewing and a big transflective/reflective one for day time use (I mostly do my driving during daytime). The screens would be mirrored and as one becomes invisible, I start using the other.

So for the second screen I'm thinking of using a Fujitsu slate tablet PC with a reflective screen (which I suppose gets brighter the more light it gets, and it's completely invisible during nighttime.

So I'm thinking of a Fujitisu ST 5011D or something even cheaper. I would adapt a touchscreen to it, and probably wouldn't use the digitizer (as Turbocad did on his FX, I think). The Tablet does not have VGA input, but I thought about using RealVNC, MaxVista or the free ZoneScreen.

So do you think the cheap Fujitsu has the horsepower to play DVD, Visualizations, with the above software? There's also the ST5031D, or the 4121? The 5011D is a Pentium Mobile 1GHz with 512MB RAM for instance.

All the processing is done via Core2duo in a miniITX case, it's just a matter of displaying what is being sent to it? Anybody ever tried that?

I'll think about mounting options later, but I'm thinking of a tray coming from the huge console between the front seats, that can be hidden from view when not in use, and that can slide and tilt up to the OEM screen if need be, hovering above the cupholders...

Of course, I'd have to power both computers at the same time, I have a M4ATX, not sure what else I'd need for this to work, and I'd probably would connected them via wired network for speed, but I'd test wi-fi too (it would work as a wireless monitor, how cool is that?).

Any suggestions?

Thanks!

When selecting new hardware I decided that it would be good to be able to easily move the pc from one car to another, as I have three vehicles that I regularly use.

I came across the EEEPC in a local computer store, and immediatly thought "if only that had a touch screen". When I got home I had a search on the net, and found loads of touchscreen kits for the 701:rock: The only downside to the EEE, is it's measley 8Gb ssd drive:ohwell:, however it does have a built in SDHC card reader, which will accept 32GB cards!!

The touch screen is easy to fit, and it's controller is also a usb hub, which meant I could fit the GPS receiver inside the screen frame, and also a 32Gb flash drive for storage, plus another 32Gb in the sd slot!.

I have now got most of the project completed, touch screen is fitted, GPS receiver fitted within screen frame, usb DAB up and working. I have again chosen to use RoadRunner as my front end.

So far all is working well, and because of the mounting position, on top of the dash, I should have no more water related incidents!

I will post some pics soon.

Thanks to everyone on the forum who helped me to get it all up and running smoothly.:hail:

I know I have seen these but haven't been able to find one. I have several of the adapters for putting the laptop drive on a regular 3.5" / PC ribbon cable, but I need to go the other way around:

Proprietary 3x44pin header on motherboard goes to a 2nd card/drive mount, and the drive mount has one slim notebook optical connector on the top and the mini 44? pin header on the bottom for mounting a laptop drive. I made room for the full size 3.5" drive elsewhere (since it's not fun / cost effective looking for 7200rpm ATA 2.5" drives any more) and obviously 3.5" 7200 PATA drives are the opposite, to the point of being disposable.

Archos 5 IMT Install

I own the Archos 5 Internet Media Tablet now over 2 months and use it every day in my car. Here so far my experience and Jeep install.

Pros:
- All-in-one device. It has FM, GPS, Wifi, Bluetooth, (optional DVB-T) and 500 GB on a brilliant 5 inch colour touch screen. No more dozens of USB dongles, Hubs, powered hubs to have the basic Car PC setup
- Small, light and mobile with powerful hardware to play HD movies, multitasking and nice 3D UI capabilities. I use it 90% in my car but when on trips I have an Internet Tablet at conferences in hotel. Don't have to wire the "bulky" laptop to surf the net or check and write emails
- Very energy efficient. It runs at max. 8W if under full load. This allows to run for hours on car battery withouth worrying too much
- Instant-on, always-on. THIS IS THE BEST compared to custom car PC / motherboard solution. It has internal battery to run approx 7 hours. and is charged via cigarette lighter. Resuming from suspend takes 1 second. Energy consumption on suspend is below 1 W and that is why I have it always in "charging" mode on cigarette lighter. I am doing this now over 1 month and never had cranking problems in the morning although it is very cold here. No more hassles with expensive PSU/DC-DC/Startup controllers (which already cost have of an Archos with 500 GB), slow BIOS post times, S3, Hibernate and USB issues etc.
- Good GPS solutions to choose from IGO Amigo (Motonav), Copilot, soon Navigon and TomTom to follow

Cons:
- Android is still in its childhoold and therefore apps (software) are not that many yet as on Windows basis. But the combination of widgets make a usable and good looking UI. And seeing all those Android smart phones coming up next year and with Google's support the apps will explode. Also there is a SDK for interfacing Android which could be something to build a frontend around it
- You have to pay extra bucks to replay MPEG2 (DVD) and AC3. This is kind of a ripp off but still cheaper than any equivalent PC solution (where you pay for OS). Some codecs dont play, i.e. WMV7 and WMV8 which must be converted. MPC is not supported either-
- Touchscreen is sometimes not the right input device during driving. Although there are no real button solutions available for Car PCs neither (except some Ibus/steering wheel solutions), there are many input devices made for PC usage which can be used in Car environment as well (Touchpads, joysticks, Space nav). But the fact that Archos has USB and Bluetooth should allow to attach another more mechanical device for Input. It is then only a driver / Android issue.

I could list dozens more of Pros than Cons compared to custom motherboard/PC solution. I used to have a laptop and a Little Valley install before. The ugliest thing was always engergy, startup, bios and USB hell. This is all gone with Archos.

And NEVER FORGET: This is 500 GB of music/video with HD capability and fast internet browsing on 200 Gramm device which does not consume more than 8 WATTS!!!! Once data plans get cheaper I will teether via bluetooth to 3G mobile or mount a mini access points with 3G SIM card in car and have full Google Maps and Streetview for navigation. Oh boy...

Now see my install and how easy it is two unplug for mobile usage.

I have done extensive research into integrating additional hardware into my new vehicle (2010 Camaro) and have a few questions about product choices....

I have done extensive research into integrating additional hardware into my new vehicle (2010 Camaro) and have a few questions about product choices. For the first phase of mods, I plan to install:

PathfindIR IR camera made by FLIR;
Boyo Backup Rear View Camera;
Lilliput 619GL70 7" touch screen LCD monitor with dash mount;
*Asus Eee PC T91GO netbook;
Microsoft Streets and Trips with GPS antenna.

My first question is: Can the T91 netbook handle 2 video feeds as well as having the GPS software running all at the same time? The reason I'm considering netbooks is that I have very limited space in my vehicle to mount anything larger. That being said, I'm left with having the netbook in the glove compartment. Placing it under my seat isn't an option either in this vehicle. I have considered the trunk, but would prefer to use that as a last resort. Also, I'd like the laptop to be powered on/off automatically when the vehicle power is applied and when the power is removed (turn the key, so to speak.) What hardware would I require to achieve this?

For my second question:
My end goal is to have the option to view either the GPS feed or either camera feed through the 7" screen. I want to be able to manipulate the system with maximum ease while driving so as to avoid too many distractions. Is there any possibility to make the feed choices via voice command? Seeing as the LCD screen is linked to the computer, I could manipulate the GPS software from the driver's seat with relative ease.

In the event that I am unable to use a netbook for this purpose, is there a way to connect another 7" touchscreen to the system so that the GPS could be programmed from the passenger side as well as from the driver's?

This setup may sound odd to some, but being in the airforce I'm used to having one person "driving" while having another "navigating." I find this system, when I have someone else with me of course, comes in very handy on longer trips.

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Ive been reading many post about people having problems turning on thier laptop remotly. I found a simple and easy way to remote turn on your laptop ( even a normal computer) without opening up the laptop. The concept is that you can tell the computer to wake up from stand by mode if you click on a keyboerd or a mouse. So what I did was open a mouse and located the right click switch of the mouse. I then soldered two wires going from the right click mouse to a remote switch. I then also cut the red led that comes from the mouse and soldered it to two other wires and reconnected the other side of the wires back where the led was. with all that done I went into the setting of the computer and told the computer that when the click on the mouse is press to wake up out of stand by mode.It only works in stand by mode.

For those that are using Netbooks or laptops as their CarPC, here is an interesting option that may be worth looking into for remotely booting your system up.

Are there any bright LED's that can be powered by a laptop? I recently dismantled a Dell D610, soldered the power switch to the modem port and while I was at it, I managed to solder a phone cable to the power indicator LED. Now there's enough voltage to power a regular red/green/yellow LED but it's not enough to power for the LED in this power button I purchased. I then bought some 3.5v bright white LED's off eBay but they won't even light with the laptop. Is there such a thing as a bright white LED that runs on 1.5v-2v? I'd really like to have the fading effect while the system is asleep. It took a lot of work to take the system apart completely and solder wires to something that small so I'd hate to see it go to waste.

This is a diagram of a relay to show you a simple way to power on your laptop when car is cranked.
You will need to find your wire from the ignition switch that go's to the starter. When you crank
your car the starter has a momentary switch that will send power to the relay only when cranking.
Put hot on pin 86. put a ground on pin 85. wires from laptop power switch on pins 30 . 87. If you use this
you will need to setup in windows to do nothing when power button is pressed.
To turn off laptop i use ShutControl found here on mp3car. you probably can find color code for the starter wire with a google search for your make and model car.

TRY THIS AT YOUR OWN RISK I TAKE NO RESPONSIBILITY. This is the setup i use works good for me <img src="http://www.mp3car.com/vbulletin/attachments/laptops-netbooks-tablets-umpcs-etc/57086d1257899163-starter-switch-laptop-power-on-starter-switch-power-on.jpg" border="0" alt="Name: starter switch power on.jpg

I replaced the lcd screen, the touchpad, and the keyboard on my Dell Insipron 9400. The touchpad and the keyboard work fine, but for some reason the LCD screen will not display anything, not even at startup. I tried putting the old LCD back in, but it doesn't display anything either, so that rules out the new LCD being defective. I even started over and checked for any loose cables and I found none. I can hook up an external monitor and that works just fine. In fact, that's how I'm using the laptop presently. So what could be the problem?

Hi all,

I'm quite new to this forum (i have read quite a bit here but only just registered) so if i'm posting this in the wrong place, please let me know.

I have a panel pc lying around doing not to much so i was thinking to try and use it in my car, mainly as a mp3 player because my standard radio is allmost dead.

It is an industrial panel pc "IEI afl-07a-lx/wt-r/256MB".
It came with a clean WinCE 5.0 os on a CF card, it starts up nicely and works like a charm, touchscreen and everything. Just have to install it in my car and hook it up.
But (and this is a big butt ;) there is allmost no usefull software on the cf card, the only thing is a small version of media player with very tiny buttons, not very usefull on the road because i will have to use a stylus or something.

I have tried to install xpe end xp versions on cf cards, usb-hdd and usb sticks and nothing seems to work well. xpe is just a little to much for me to build, and xp is just too slow and i can't get the touchscreen working right with xp. The usb-hdd will install xp but on reboot i get a bluescreen. Questions from me to the manufacturer of the panel-pc learned me that the usb-hdd will not work (driver issues).

I could buy a xpe version on cf card but that will be very expensive and i just don't have the money laying around to do so.

I have searched the net a bit for usable mp3 players for WinCE 5.0 but with little succes. The few that i found gave an error on install stating that it was the wrong software for the wrong device (or something like that).

I can however play around a bit with Visual Basic 6 (beginners level), but i don't think i can compile that for WINCE5.0.

Can anybody help me out to get this thing working? Like i said, i would be very happy if i could only get a fullscreen mp3 player with big buttons on it. At the very least that would be a start.

Or maby someone could help me building a xpe image for the device so i can try to use xp software on it (more choice in software)?

Thanks for any help,

Greetings

Of course, the normal disclaimers apply: Don't do this without some experience in electronics, soldering, installs, etc, and I take no responsibility for damage to equipment, your car, your health, etc. I'm simply relaying my experience to interested parties.

So, I got this HP Advanced Docking Station and HP nc8230 laptop from work for $75, lightly used. I thought it would be great to have a docking station such as this one wired into my car to host USB, power on/off, VGA, extra drive bay, and whathaveyou, so that I could easily dock/undock the lappy without worrying about connections.

Trouble was, the AC adapter for the docking station is rated 135 watts (I figure 90 watts for the lappy plus overhead), and is of the "smart" type, where even if you apply an external 12v-19v DC/DC converter to the dock, it won't power on and charge the lappy. With the dock not powered on, the power switch on the docking station will switch the lappy on/off, and the dock will act as a USB hub only...it cannot charge the lappy nor provide power to it without a "smart" power connection. Without a "smart" connection, the lappy will power on from the docking station switch, but will only work off its own battery until it dies.

Some detective work was necessary to find out how to make the base station power on and charge the laptop while operating from an in-car 12v power source, where a simple 12v-19v adapter for notebooks wouldn't work. HP (nor anyone else, for that matter) does not make an auto adapter for the docking station (duh, they don't anticipate users putting docking stations in their cars). The trick was knowing something about the "smart" part of the existing AC adapter for the base station.

To see what was going on with the docking station's AC/DC power brick, I carefully cut the cable between the power brick and the power plug that makes entry into the docking station. I separated the conductors (3) within the cable coming from the brick, applied AC power to the brick, and went to work with my multimeter. I quickly found that the center (innermost) conductor coming from the power brick was the +19 volts that would eventually be fed to the laptop for power/charging purposes. The outer conductor sheath was ground...okay, that's pretty normal. The "smart" part of the adapter, which told the docking station it was okay to power on/charge on the 19 volts it was being fed, was located on the middle conductor within the cable. I found that it was a DC signal hovering around 12 volts, and could think of no other application besides signaling the base station that all was well...HP's way of making sure you were using approved HP equipment that cost many times more than what it should. Sure, it could be providing some power to the internals on the dock, but I couldn't figure why they would provide two separate DC voltages for charge/operation, when they could simply work from the same +19 every laptop I know of uses for input.

I figured that since this 12v middle conductor was providing nothing more than signaling, it was likely to be facing an extremely high impedance where it made entry to the base station. Basically, for signal purposes, you engineer your signal to present a voltage, but since you don't want to eat up a lot of energy communicating things like "okay to turn on", you present that "okay" signal with a very high input impedance at whatever you plug into, so as not to dump current where you don't need it...you're simply talking to a relay or something, not spinning a wheel, pushing speakers, heating bread, etc., so you don't need lots of current. On a whim, since there was presumably a very high input impedance at the other end, I figured I'd see how it dealt with +19 volts instead of the +12v it was expecting.

Using the cut off end of the cable that entered the dock, I simply spliced the middle and center conductors together into the +19v coming out of my 12v-19v DC converter (run-of-the-mill car adapter for laptops, about $15), and spliced the grounds together, being careful as always to keep them separate. I hooked up everything in my car for test and applied switched DC (turned the car on with the adapter in a cigarette lighter socket). It worked! The base station powered on and charged beautifully, and I've been using it in this configuration for the last 7 months or so.

So, to make a long story short, if you're looking to supply an advanced HP docking station with power for your in-car purposes, you need to:

1. Buy a 12v-19v DC to DC adapter rated at ~120 watts or better, or some other +19v DC source. It doesn't matter what type of plug is on the end, so long as have +19 volts on one conductor, and ground on the other. A "smart" in-car adapter for notebooks will not work with the docking station, I tried.

2. Snip the power cable on the existing AC adapter that came with the docking station, between the power brick and the docking station.

3. Splice together the innermost and middle conductors on the cable you have just cut (these will be fed +19 volts from your car adapter), separating these from ground (the outermost conductor).

4. Splice the +19v output of your car adapter from step 1 into the innermost and middle conductors which you spliced together in step 3.

5. Splice the ground from the adapter in step 1 to the outermost conductor on the cable from step 3.

6. Done!

Splicing into the power switch on this docking station is no different from most others. The only other install notes to pass on is that the HP docks don't really have a mechanism to hold the laptop locked down to the docking station (again, they don't anticipate in-car use and don't design their docks to withstand going over potholes, etc.), so you'll need a way to hold the lappy down to the station before you use it in-car. So far, the dock as well as the lappy have done very well to resist heat and mechanical shock while in-car. All my USB devices (external drive, Sirius, USB sound, touch screen, GPS) are operating off the dock without problem. Where applicable, USB applications requiring external 5 volts or 12 volts are being fed from a separate DC-DC converter.

I know these pop up all the time, but here's what I'm going to do with my laptop - I wanted to get some advice on implementation.

I have a Compaq/HP Presario x6000 laptop - the battery is dead, so it's useless as a laptop and just takes up space on the desktop. I'm going to put it in the car for my car PC, but I'm torn.

Should I dismantle the laptop, harvest the screen (and put the casing back together so the lid shuts), and pull the ROM drive, then mount the laptop in the truck, into a wooden enclosure/box with fans...

...OR...

Should I keep the laptop as is, disconnect the main display, then mount it under the passenger front seat?

The car is a 2010 Mazda3 i Touring with the moonroof/Bose system. I'll be hooking this into the Aux port, but still driving control through a touch screen (which is hooked up through the VGA port in the rear of the laptop)

Also - do any of you with laptops/PCs under the seat have problems with rain/dirt/dust? I figured it'd be a constant issue with a daily driver.

- not only attached to car but can be used anywhere
- docking station for easy car mount and charging (has to be bought separately for usb host function and fast charging. charging via mini usb and pc is very slow. also you need some custom mount. just get any universal gps holder which will work - pictures to follow)
- remote control while driving

Well, my original carpc fianlly died so I decided to go a different route and use my Samsung Q1 Ultra EL as my new carpc. Its a pretty interesting setup and I'll have to take some pics of it to post but it works quite well for me.
My head unit is a JVC KD-S100 and I have run the line inputs to the line out on the Q1. The Q1 is secured in place by a RAM Mount that I have modified to slide into the storage pocket under the radio on my Accord. Once in place the wole setup coveres the radio and stays snugly in place but can be easilly removed for storage.
My front end is Centrafuse and I really like the look and feel of it. It scales well and runs well on my UMPC. In fact, very well considering that my Q1 is the 800mHz model. I upgraded the RAM to 2 gigs and shoehorned a 60 gig 1.8" drive into it. And....I'm running Win 7 RC with Aero active. Runs quite well. I have the extended battery so I get 6+ hours of run time on it. I recently made a trip from Charleston SC to Knoxville TN with it running the whole way and had about 30 mins of battery life left by the time I got home. That was running on full brightness. Another good point about the Q1 is that it had an extremely bright and crisp LED backlit screen.
CF is linked to my PDA Phone (PPC6800 Mogul) and I can connect wirelessly via Bluetooth PAN to get on the internet. A bit slow but not bad...I could always use a USB cable for faster speeds but I'm trying to minimize all the wires.
The only other thing I wish was that there was a SSD that would work in the miniPCI slot inside the Q1. It seems to be reserved for a HSPDA modem and not many (anyone) has been successful in getting an SSD to work there in addition to the primary HDD.
Once I get some batteries for my camera I'll post some pics. Its by no means a professional setup but its highly functional.

So I'm about to replace my current build with an hp laptop. I have a 7" lilliput in my dash already, so obviously I will still be using that. I'm sure those of you who are using laptops are also using 3rd party touch screens, so my issue is as follows: We all have these perfectly working 10-17" (or so) displays sitting around in our trunks, under our seats, etc. not being used at all. I suppose i'm just looking for inspiration for what to do with mine - perhaps a display for the rear seats (maybe coming down from the ceiling, i dunno) or maybe even something for the people driving behind me to watch ;) I guess i'm just looking for some inspiration. What have you guys done with your extra laptop displays?

its a bit all over the place, but..

im using a toshiba sattelite laptop with an extension onto the power button to the dash.

s-video out to s-video in on a standard 12v lcd 8" tv. another option might be VGA out from the laptop to composite or s-video into the TV.

wireless keyboard

rollerball to navigate or hand held 'presentation' type mouse thing (or currently researching touchscreen covers)

i plan on using a proper stripped out version of win98 with custom startup screens for boot speed, and configuring it to shutdown or hibernate when running on batteries. line in a power supply connected to the cigar lighter wiring (switched power)

running sound from the headphone socket, though the HU and out through amp and speakers.

any glaringly obvious problems with this?
