Until now, mp3car hasn't had a clear policy for members who represent a company to follow.

We'd like to change that and in the process give our vendors an opportunity to represent themselves to the community in their avatar and their custom title. Identifying your company lets other forum members know it was your company that helped out and you get the credit you should for contributions to the community.

Below are the amended rules for forum member who represent a company. These changes have been made to the official forum rules, which can be found here.

Section 3. mp3Car Forum Members Representing a Company

Active mp3Car community members who represent a company on the Forums, deserve to recognized for the contributions they make to the forums. However, these guidelines must be followed:
1. Put the name of the company that you work for or represent in your signature. The name may not contain a hyperlink.
2. Make your custom title the name of your company by using the "Contact Us" link below to request this change.
3. Make your company logo your avatar.
4. Please do not place the company’s web address in either your signature, as a hyperlink, or a post. This is considered advertising and will be subject to penalty.
5. If you have a reasonable cause for placing a link to your company, first ask for approval from mp3Car. Certain companies have been given permission to place a link to their company website, based on their contributions to the community.
6. Please do not use multiple user names for one individual at a company. It is not permitted for an individual to have more than one user name.
7. Please be respectful on the forums; should a disagreement arise with another member that may be a competitor, or you find another member is purposely flaming your company, report the post and the moderators will take action, if any is needed.

What can you expect to read about?
There will be 5 main tags to start:

1. In and Around Mp3Car– posts under this tag will let people know what is going on in and around the Mp3Car office.
2. Mp3Car Forum News – this section will provide information on forum development, promotions, and members.
3. Product News – any and all information related to particular products will be provided such as product launches, updates on stock, and product retirement.
4. Tech Support – this section will provide posts on tech support tips and work-arounds as well as examples of how we have learned what to do or, in some cases, what not to do. There will also be suggestions regarding where to find technical information in general.

OVERVIEW
StreetDeck Software Developer will work as part of the core StreetDeck team. We are a small, but growing company working on the bleeding of in car technology. StreetDeck is an in-vehicle PC application that provides navigation, multimedia, and blue tooth phone support to x86 based PCs (http://www.streetdeck.com). The developer must quickly develop an understanding of StreetDeck, In-Vehicle Computing, and designing and developing the latest in in-vehicle infotainment technology. The StreetDeck developer must be self-motivated and able to take the initiative on tasks supporting StreetDeck.


RESPONSIBILITIES
The ideal candidate would be highly motivated and interested in car computing. Primary responsibilities would include:
-Develop additional functionality as required for the core application.
-Develop addins requested by clients that work within the core application
-Test modules in both lab and real world environments
-Communicating directly with clients to develop specifications
-Providing both end user documentation and internal programming documentation for developed modules


REQUIRED SKILLS:
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or related field and at least 1 year related work experience.
- Knowledge of OpenGL, Direct3D, or 3D programming in general.
- Self managed and able to perform complete tasks given only high level requirements.
- Ability to work comfortably as an individual to complete specific tasks and communicate progress and time lines effectively to management remotely
- Advanced experience developing in C++ and Microsoft Visual Studio

Each image cannot be larger than 10000k (which sould be plenty big) nor can it be larger than 1024 x 768 pixels.

Each user can upload 100 images. If it's determined that we need a higher limit, well take another look. Each user can upload 10 images at a time.


To get to this feature go to the UserCP drop down and click on "Upload and Image":





From here, you will be taken to a page like the image below:





From this point, it's pretty self explanitory.


Some other features you may have noticed floating around:

  • In your profile (UserCP) you will now notice a filmstrip down at the bottom that shows your 3 most recent uploaded images.
  • Underneath your post count, you will find "My Photos (#)". Click on this number for yourself or someone else and you will be taken to the users hosted images.
  • When you are in the "Quick Reply" box click on "Go Advanced", or when you are starting a new thread, below the smilies, you will find a new box called "My Photos". Within this box you be able to either pick one of your previously uploaded images or use the quick upload feature.
  • Under the "Member Menu" drop down in the Nav bar, you will find a "Member Images" link where you can see a listing of all of the users who have uploaded images. Click on a users name and you will be taken to their image gallery.

Although they look somewhat similar to the 3.0 templates, there are quite a number of differences under the hood that break things in subtle ways. The most obvious of these was the missing "quick post" feature.

The two new styles are named MP3Car vBulletin 3.5 Standard and MP3Car vBulletin 3.5 2-Column The "standard" version is closer to the default style newly adopted in vBulletin 3.5. The "2-column" version looks much like the template you were used to seeing before the upgrades. I've set the default to the new "2-column" format, so if you don't have a style selected in your profile (and I believe nobody does by default) you should now be seeing the new 2-column format. (If not, log out of the forums and log back in again.) I've kept the old vBulletin 3.0.x style arround just in case I goofed something else, so y'all can switch back to that instead of yelling. ;-)

There is also a quick style switcher at the bottom left of every page, so you can flip between the formats to see which one you like best. HOWEVER, if you switch to the old 3.0.x style, this quick switcher will *not* work -- you will need to go into your options panel to select one of the 3.5-based styles.

I'll be keeping the old 3.0.x style arround for a few days "just in case" and the plan is for that style to go away. If there is something broken with the new 3.5 styles, please let me know and I'll take care of it.

Please note: Quick Post still DOES NOT WORK with the old 3.0.x template. Anyone who complains about this will have their post count reset to zero. ;-)

I did find a few problems that could potentially cause the system to slow down under load and have fixed them. I'm not sure as yet what caused them, but I'll be keeping a closer eye on things in the future. However, I would like to explain why the server is slower some times than others.

For starters, perhaps I should mention that the server that hosts the forums is a dual Opteron with 2 gigs of RAM -- pretty much the top-of-line when it was initially installed early this year. No expense was spared here! The only other service on the machine is the on-line store which (unfortunately) gets far less traffic than the forums.

The most common cause for "server slowness" has nothing at all to do with the server and is caused by traffic conjestion. The datacenter where the server is located is fairly well connected and the delays are typically introduced within the user's ISP. I have both cable modem and DSL at home, and I regularly notice periods where one will be slow and the other will work just fine. Not much you can do here but cope or get a new ISP.

The second most common cause is server backups. There are a number of administrative jobs that run between midnight and 4AM EST that do load the machine down rather heavily. I'm working to push them back a bit (4AM - 7AM EST is the period of lowest load) and have them run with a lower priority.

The third, and most questionable, is the vBulletin software itself. I have noticed that posts to particularly long threads (such as the "head" thread) cause MySQL to go off and grind for several seconds blocking out all other activity. Accessing this thread also slows down the server much more than those of "normal" length, but the results are far less severe.

If you ever notice sustained periods of slowness outside the backup/admin window (currently midnight-4AM EST) and can rule out network congestion, please feel free to drop me a note (with as much info as you can provide) at peter@mp3car.com

We are currently in the process of re-designing the entire mp3car.com website and a large part of this will be developing a unique visual theme that we'll apply to the home page, the forums, the on-line store, as well as new features such as user image galleries.

Previously, mp3car.com was running version 3.0.8 of vBulletin, and I had installed the current version of vBulletin (3.5.0) on the development machine in the office. I had wanted to integrate all of the visual changes into 3.5.0 and then roll things out once, but the the vBulletin software upgrade got pushed ahead and didn't get the level of testing it fully deserved. Unfortunately, I was the only one who did any testing, and I missed some of the visual items such as the Avatars.

There were a number of major functional changes between the 3.0.x series and the 3.5.x series of vBulletin and one of these was the templating system which drives the look of the forums. The old templates are only partially compatible with the new software. So far, we've hacked the old templates to work (though not completely) but the real solution is to apply the updated templates designed for 3.5.x.

I'm currently in the process of putting together upgraded templates on our development machine, and I'll have the moderators and long-time forum members proof this to make sure everything is OK before we roll these changes into the live site.

Please rest assured that all of the old functionality will be restored during the coming week. In the meantime, please bare with us while we take care of this.

Clearing Cache on the BlackBerry Wireless Handheld

Clearing the content caches clears both the rendered pages and server data:

1. Highlight the BlackBerry browser icon and click the trackwheel.
2. Click the trackwheel again to display the Browser Options menu.
3. Scroll down to Options and click the trackwheel to open the browser options screen.
4. Scroll down to General Properties and click the trackwheel to open the General Properties screen.
5. Click the trackwheel to open the Cache menu.
6. Scroll down to Clear Content Caches and click the trackwheel to clear your cache and return to the General Properties screen.
7. Use the Escape button to page back through the screens to the BlackBerry main menu.

1. Open Safari.
2. Select Empty Cache.
