I have a question and I am sure you guys on the Linux side can answer. After building a mega multi-zone system and being hit with so many issues, I have decided to pull the setup out and use it as a desktop PC. Thing is, I still want multi-zone. I see that they will be selling the Raspberry Pi for about $35.00. That makes building a multi-zone rig much more affordable and cost effective. Maybe about $100.00 per seat for the setups. Now because these bad boys only use Linux, that means I need a Linux based FE.

So here is where the questions start. I will be asking FE and hardware questions.

1) Will LinuxICE run on the Raspberry Pi. In the FAQ's it says newer version of Ubunti will not commit. Isnt LinuxICE based off an older version, so it will work?

2) The Raspberry Pi runs off of 5V 1amp mini USB power. I was thinking of buying 6 car chargers that meet the specs, but are they regulated? Would I have to supply regulated 12V power? I also have 7 car chargers that run 5V 2amps for the KVMP switches so I want to be sure so I dont kill nothing. Maybe I can take car pc PSU and mod it to power everything?

3) Will LinuxICE work on a SD card?

4) Any other things I should take into account?

Thanx in advance!

I am looking for a better 3D based front end for my ION System. I am a linux enthusiast and would love to run it in my car so it can match all of my other systems.

Unfortunately I can't find screen shots, up to date support information or a valid install howto for this software.

So far I've found 1 screenshot for a third party skin (that looks pretty generic) a wiki with 90% out of date information (not linked url wiki.openice is external) that has a download page with 3 links, only 1 that works but doesn't go to the software it claims.

From what I can see LinuxICE and nGhost work together to make this system. I don't see any documentation that says what LinuxICE is other than it's based on an outdated Ubuntu (9.04) and I can't find a version of nghost that exists in a valid repo. (listed repo responds to an apt-get install nghost with "package is referred to but doesn't exist" error)

Has this software been abandoned or am I missing a link to a wiki/forum with a group of people in it?

I have BlackSea skin. Sometimes i see the files listed sometimes i don't. When i do see them and select a file, the selections truncates down to a single different file and it plays. Now i cannot go back to the original list.
I have tried:
1. Modification of apps.xml in the skin folder.
2. Modification of video and music libraries in the skin folder.
3. Deleted the only file under /.nGhost and rebooted.
4. multiple subfolders in Music folder.
5. Modified nGhost.conf
6. Changing skins.
7. Ran nscan and nGhost in terminal a zillion times.
8. Pulled my hair and got an earful from wife.
What else can i do other than reinstall?

So, I have gone ahead and installed the latest Ubuntu onto my car pc.

It is a Intel Atom Mini ITX board, 2 gigs of ram and 260 gig sata drive, standard 7" touch monitor.

Ubunto has installed fine and runs great.
Now I want to install the latest version of LinuxIce. I'm installing from a USB stick, the same way I installed Ubuntu.
But it won't install. It stays on what can be described as a DOS page, the last entry said something about:
Monitor found, but no usable configuration file was found.
And that is where it stays and LinuxIce won't install.

Any ideas anyone ??

Hi man, I'm new of this forum and of linux ice. Sorry for my english... I m italian and i ve not a very good english.
I want to prove linux ice on my future car pc but i ve a lot of problem to do it:

1)The first is that nghost don t see my music and video file from library or USB. How i can resolve this? I ve seen in several forum and i see that i must modify in nghost.config the path where i have music and video. I ve done this but nothing. After i ve proved to put more subfolder (es. /home/francesco/Musica/Artista/Album) and i ve seen music after a reboot. This is for the music in library. For music in USB i ve the path /media/disk but it don't work, the same for video in library and video in USB. Can anyone help me to configure nghost please?

2) When i do a modify to nghost.config file, can i reboot only nghost without rebooting my sistem or i must reboot the sistem each time i do a modify?

3) How work nscan? If i insert my USB while nghost is opened, can i see music in USB or i must run nscan each time?

Thanks in advance for reply :)

i got a touchscreen computer (one of these are used at grocery stores for checkouts) and it has a PIII 750mhz processor in it. i have a usb cd drive and a thumb drive, neither which are detected at boot so I can't boot any installation of any kind at the moment. I was wondering if by installing a 32 bit installation on another computer, could the hard drive then be transferred? there is no on board cd drive either and network booting isnt supported by the bios. in the bios the boot order does have a cd drive although I see no where inside this thing as to where it could be connected. it has a mobile 2.5 ide hard drive also and only 1 ide port. I want to try and get this thing to be a media control center for my music in my garage, i think it would be perfect for it.

You will get a list of items. One should be the onboard audio(had VIA in the name). Write down the name.
Then, type "sudo nano /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf"
You can use the keyboard to navigate and add the world blacklist followed by the name of the onboard audio you retrieved above. Press CTRL+X, then Y, then ENTER to save.

My touchscreen has always had issues (Lilliput). I'm on my 3rd one now, I think.

I have a wireless keyboard. With RoadRunner, I just edited the config to provide keyboard shortcuts for everything. How can I do this with LinuxICE? For example, I want to press M and have it take me to my music library. I want to press G and get to the GPS page(Navit). I'd like to be able to press A to enter an address in the GPS or something similar.

I just installed LinuxICE and like the simplicity. I'm still trying to get everything set up which can be a pain. I'll make a post with fixes I've had to do for others to find.

I have an external volume control (from a usb keyboard), have it hooked up and am wondering how to get it to control the volume for my system. I am thinking that it is probably easier to make it control the system volume and leave nghost volume maxed out, but the knob doesn't change any volume except mplayer's when playing videos.

I have decided to go with a Windows system for the time being(wipes tears from his eyes). I can get everything I need running perfect with ease. I do eventually want to come back to linuxICE, but only after a few issues have been fixed....

1)Navigation: Navit is just not ready for my purposes at this time...Gonna go with Garmin PC(navigation and ease of use is the main reason for my carpc).

2)Video: MPlayer locks up too much for me. No problems watching movies in Windows.

3)Sound: This issue here killed it for LinuxICE. I have no more time to fool with this. Ready to start showing off my system....can't without sound.

4)Touchscreen: Touchscreen drivers at this point do not work well in LinuxICE...at least on my machine(didn't buy a touchscreen just to look at, I want it to function.....works well under Windows.

Will play with it in a virtual machine on my system though......

I really love the interface, and in time LinuxICE will be the carpc OS of choice for most(myself included). Keep up the good work!!!

For some reason I no longer have sound. This is a major issue. Does anyone know how I can remedy this issue without re-installing my whole system? If not I may have to partition and install windows until a solution is found( if I have to go that route LinuxICE2 is gone...I'll just go with a windows system, which I have plenty of experience with, and can solve almost all problems with relative ease and a few clicks of the mouse). Right now windows is running in virtualbox, and LinuxICE2 is the host and dedicated system. I really like my setup as is...but without sound it is useless on too many levels to be of real in car use other than web browsing. So far no one has a solution...not even on the web....at least none that have worked for me. I mainly want my system for music, movies, and navigation. Media player will take care of my music, VLC will take care of my movies, and Garmin PC(can get it off ebay for under $80 with GPS reciever, and its better than navit) would take care of navigation in windows(plus my touchscreen works flawlessly in windows). Really want to stay with LinuxICE2 though cause the interface is on point, but I need results, and this is becoming a headache. Any working solution will be appreciated!!!

As much as I love the LinuxICE2 interface, I see no need to keep Nweather. It is a truly useless program. Half the time it doesn't work, and when it does its unreliable. I use Firefox as my web browser, and the aniweather pluggin runs circles around Nweather. It always works, is always accurate, and no editing of files is involved. And since an Internet connection is required for either to work, the decision is a no brainer. Gonna edit the desktop menu icon for Nweather and change it to something useful that works.

I was looking into putting the shortcuts into the key config file for matchbox itself but i cant find anywhere where it will tell me what the keycodes are. anyone got multimedia keys to work?

My music library doesn't change very often, but i do like to upload videos and would like for them to show up if i click a button to say update videos or something.

Hi Again,

So finally healthy enough to put some time into my carputer, and thus have reinstalled linuxice. Basic install went fine and I was able to upgrade it to 10.04 without issue. However, I have a few things I would like some help with...

1. Calibrating my touchscreen. It's not an egalaxy like most, but rather a 3M. I have attempted to follow the directions here: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1478877 -- But the problem I am noting is that the *box* for pressing (for lack of a better term) is smaller than the screen. About 1/4 of the screen is thus ignored. Even though it's viewable and works with a standard mouse.

2. I have a AWUS036H USB WIFI adapter. I am unsure of how to configure it. Ifconfig -a does show wlan0 with a HWaddr address. Is there a configuration app for this within linuxice/ubuntu?

3. I store all my media on an external usb drive, I want to have it mounted to a specific location at every reboot -- without it being added a 2nd time to something like /media/disk. Is this possible?

I may have others, but these are the one's slowing me down... Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I am new to the forum, but have been lurking here off and on for the last couple of years. I finally pulled together enough parts to put together my truckputer and installed LinuxICE 2.0.1 and all in all things went really smooth. I am running on an older VIA mini-ITX board and everything is working great. I just got the Lilliput 629GL and ran the icetouch utility and even that works great now. The only thing I have not got working yet is the usplash, but I am not too worried about that. I am still assembling it, so its not installed in the truck yet but I had a question:

Sirius and LinuxICE; I have seen several threads on here, the LinuxICE boards and even the MJS Gadgets board that reference vaguely that Linux and Sirius (MJS-SC-C1 + Sirius SC-C1) DO work together, but I have yet to hear of anyone actually implementing it. I mostly listen to that and would like to replace my Pioneer head unit/Sirius receiver with the truckputer if it all works together. Anyone tried it yet?

Thanks for all the hard work in putting together LinuxICE!!

Hello,
I'm having major problems with nghost. First it freezes for up to several minutes on almost every action preformed. This leaves an unusable interface. At the same time icepanel works fine and without delay. I have a feeling this problem has to do with nscan locking the database. Why do you need to lock the database if assuming nscan is the only program that writes to it? If you just got rid of the spin lock I don't think there would be an issue. The second problem I'm having is pulse audio's volume will fall to 15% on every reboot.

As this is my first try with both Linux in general and linuxICE, it might just be an "input" error from my side :P

What I have understood is that the "music" folder in home directory is default for music and the same for videos??

When put here LICE won't detect them, think this should be detected automaticly?

Also tried to go into etc/nghost/nghost.conf, to change the folder for music. But I am not able to save it..

Can someone please put me in the right dirrection for getting my music to play atleast??

Thanks in advance :)

i have an odd issue, having some issues playing videos. i changed the video directory so that my videos would show up in nghost, that was the first problem. i found that if i play a song then open up my video library, no videos are there. if i reboot and open the video library they are there but they will not play if i click on one of them. however, if i click on one of them to play, then reboot it will start the video when nghost initializes. while this video is playing, i have found out that if i close the mplayer movie window (there is also no right click for some reason) pretty much nothing else media wise will work. i have done a few things in the console, killed nghost and restarted it to see whats up with it. i found that if i kill nghost and restart it, the icepanel back button doesnt work, the others do though. this was a big problem for me trying to troubleshoot this because once i get into either music/video library i cant go to the other. so what could be causing mplayer to act funny? the console outputs something along the lines of
as you can see above, it played the first movie just fine, i closed it and it wouldnt play the second one. the movie works btw.

Okay, I've got an instal of LinuxICE 2.0.1 running on a VM using Parallels on Mac OS 10.5. The hard drive is only 60 gigs, so I want to share all the music already loaded on the Mac with the LinuxICE vm machine.

To share the folders, you have to enable file sharing on the Mac for Windows (smb), install smbfs on LinuxICE (check) and restart the VM with LinuxICE on it. All done, but now I'm wondering exactly how I access a shared folder on LinuxICE. Ubuntu instruction talk about using the menu bar to connect to the I.P. of the Mac to identify folders but since it's LinuxICE, all I've got is nGhost.

What's the right procedure?

This is a little demo app that comes with the UI framework. As you can see it's quite touchy and finger-ready. One of the cool things about it is that it compiles and runs on my desktop. I've even installed this app on my n900 and it runs fantastic on even low-powered devices.

Note that MeeGo is still in heavy development, so what you so now probably won't reflect how things will look later on.

The themes are CSS based so it's pretty skinable that way.

Hello,
I have installed Linuxice 2.0.0 and 2.0.1 on a Intel d945gclf2 and I have a slight issue. Everything appears to install properly but upon reboot the gui never loads on startup. This happens even after the first reboot. If I run startx, nghost, icepanel, and the matchbox panel all start properly. I have placed a script startx in the init.d directory and ran update-rc.d startx defaults. Now I am left with a screen that only contains the matchbox panel. The keyboard also no longer works and I do not have a ps2 keyboard available. Basically I'm left with a system where I can not fix or use anything. I would just like to know how to fix the boot process in linuxice. I have a feeling others are having this issue as well. Thanks

Hello,
I'm having a bit of a problem with nghost 2. Currently I'm running xbuntu 9.10 and I have installed libnghost and nghost from the backup repo at http://linuxice.lhsw.com/packages/stable/. I have built the database with nscan. I am able to run nghost from command line and it will appear but if I start nghost from a shortcut or if I place it in the autostart group it will start in the background(NOT as a demon). The only time I am able to see the nghost interface is during shutdown after the desktop has been killed. Is there any remedy to this situation? Thanks for any help you can provide.

This is a quick howto on getting proximity running on LinuxICE2. You will need a LinuxICE2 machine and a desktop to do syncing with. You will also need to access a terminal with a keyboard ( in LinuxICE2 find this in Apps->TerminalEmulator->Terminal).

1 - get the dependencies:

Code:

sudo apt-get install libbluetooth-dev libgps-dev libqt4-dev build-essential

2- get and compile the source:

Code:

svn co https://linuxice.svn.sourceforge.net/svnroot/linuxice/packages/proximity
cd proximity
qmake
make
sudo make install

3- make it start up when LinuxICE2 boots:

Code:

sudo nano /etc/matchbox/session

add:

Code:

proximity -s -D &

like this:

4- edit your events!

Code:

mkdir ~/.proximity
cp /etc/proximity/events.xml ~/.proximity
mousepad ~/.proximity/events.xml

Edit to your likings. For my personal use, I copied my ssh key to my linux desktop and used rsync+ssh to do loginless syncs with my music directory. This is what I did:

on the carpc:

Code:

ssh-keygen
less ~/.ssh/id_rsa.pub

now copy and paste it to a new line in ~/.ssh/authorized_keys on your desktop.

After you get your keys all set up, make a folder on your desktop that you want to sync to. Alternatively, you can always just point to your main media folder. My library is larger than I would care to have on my carpc, so i made a separate folder for syncing with the carpc in /home/kev/carpc/Music.

Now for the command. Add this to your wifi OnAdded event:

Code:

<command type="system" bin="/usr/bin/rsync">
<arg>-arvuz</arg>
<arg>-e ssh</arg>
<arg>192.168.1.20:/home/kev/carpc/Music>/arg>
<arg>/home/kev/</arg>
</command>

Now, when you start the carpc up to leave, it'll initiate a sync. Also when you return back home, it'll also initiate a sync. However, when you stop the car, the carpc normally would turn off. This will interrupt the sync'ing process so to get around it, I added some checks.

First we edit the /etc/acpi/powerbtn.sh file that controls what happens when the power off signal is sent to the system. The following code is added *before* the command to hibernate/shutdown/etc.

Code:

if [ -f /tmp/interrupt ]
then
exit 0
fi

next, add a command before the rsync command that creates the interrupt file which essentially tells the acpi system that we are in the middle of somthing important and not to "interrupt" us:

Code:

<command type="system" bin="/bin/touch" >
<arg>/tmp/interrupt</arg>
</command>

After the rsync command, we want to cleanup and then initiate a shutdown/hibernate/suspend:

Code:

<command type="system" bin="/bin/rm" >
<arg>/tmp/interrupt</arg>
</command>
<command type="system" bin="/usr/bin/sudo" >
<arg>halt</arg>
</command>

This is not perfect yet. It will likely shutdown when you don't want it to. Alternatively, you can have it fire a notification (using the notify-send command) or something and you can wait until you see that and then manually shut it down. If anyone has a solution to the above I'm all ears. I think this really calls for some advanced conditional stuff in proximity where you can "program" using multiple events.

Hope that helps. have fun with proximity!

After somehow boinking my initial install, I decided to start from scratch.

I removed the pc, brought it inside, hooked it up to my desktop's PS and DVD drive & monitor. I then reinstalled from the DVD. Everything went smoothly. I transferred quite a bit of music to my ~/Music directory.

Today, I reinstalled the computer in the car. Hooked up my touchscreen etc, and a few things aren't working.

Touch screen isn't registering any input

nscan apparently isn't running as none of my music has showed up

Nothing shows up in the Apps menu.

I dont even know where to begin. Of course, I could always re-install again, but I'd like to avoid that if at all possible.

The installation worked okay but after using Apps-->Setup and then Apps-->Setup-->ICE Configuration when I restarted, I got a fatal error. that says something about error inserting fbcon (/lib/modules/1.2.6.28-17-generic/Kernel/drivers/video/console/fbcon.ko)

It then dumps me to the shell. Prior to that, the nGhost front end would launch and was working. Any ideas what might be the problem?
[Edit - this is related to video somehow. When I built the virtual machine, I checked the Linux 2.6.x option. Is that the right version? Also, there may be a compatibility mode I can use to 'downgrade' the virtual machine. I'm just not certain since it booted and worked prior to running the setup options.]

Maintaining a distro is hard and takes a lot of time and resources. We've been able to streamline the process a bit, but it's still not something that I think OpenICE developers are interested in doing long term.

Nextabyte, a long time sponsor of the project will be using OpenICE stuff to build a free distribution that would have been LinuxICE3 called 'Drivn'. Nextabyte is sponsoring the servers and web resources for this new distribution which lifts a lot of load off of myself and others who've been volunteering money and hardware (thanks Tidder!).

In summery, LinuxICE3 becomes known as Drivn and OpenICE won't be developing it anymore (only the underlying packages, ie nGhost, etc). Nextabyte will develop Drivn.

In other news, OpenICE 2.0 will be moving to the new MeeGo UI framework. I've started a ubuntu lucid based repository here:

For those that do not know the V1Connect is a hardware device that allows your pc to communicate with a Valentine1 radar detector. I thought I would post in this forum to bring awareness to the V1Connect development effort that has been taking place to bring support to LinuxICE.

The original thread is here: http://www.mp3car.com/vbulletin/linu...ort-linux.html

Hopefully when the developers find the necessary time to complete this it will be apart of the LinuxICE installer and you will have the opportunity to use it. I just wanted to make you all aware of this effort and hope to see some of you using the plugin when it becomes available.

Howdy,

For some reason I am having trouble getting linuxice to shutdown when it receives a powerbtn event. Using xev, I noted that keycode 124 (XF86Poweroff) is being seen - yet nghost doesn't start to shutdown. Where should I be looking to troubleshoot this?

Eventually, I would like to get tuxonice working -- so if that plays apart (I have updated to the kernel specified in another thread) please keep that in mind. Thanks in advance,

I've watched almost all of the videos posted for LinuxICE, and after my install I feel like I'm missing something. However, I am sure that this can be attributed to my noob ignorance, which leads to my questions/concerns:

Note: I apologize in advance if some of this is mentioned/answered elsewhere.

- What file formats are supported by ICE? Most of my music is in the itunes format(.m4a), and when I plugged in a usb key with some songs on it nothing is visible. I can see the song through the file manager, and I copied the file to the music folder(assuming that's where the library tab looks) and still nothing.

- While in file manager I was able to open and play the file using mplayer. However, as mention in another post, pulseaudio defaulted to mute. I haven't tried the fix yet, so i'll edit when I do.

- I tried inserting a cd, but when I select the cd tab the button animation flashes and nothing happens. I know the drive works because I used it to install.

- The network manager indicates that I am connected via wire, but when I open the browser nothing loads.

- Can the button size of the osk be enlarged? I have to use a stylus type on it.

-Also all of the setup stuff that was under apps has disappeared. Is that only available during install or can i get it back so I can recalibrate the touch screen?

- I've seen videos of the driven app switcher and nGhost 3. Are either or both of those available, and how would I go about installing them?

Thanks in advance,

Wireless:
The driver that comes with the 2.6.28-17-linuxice2 kernel for wireless is crap. It just plain doesn't work. So here's how to fix it (yes I'll get some packages created to make this easy):

1 - apt-get install build-essential linux-headers
2 - wget http://wireless.kernel.org/download/...-02-01.tar.bz2

3 - cd compate-wireless-2010-02-01/ && make && sudo make install

4 - reboot

I have just sucessfully installed Frostwire, but have to run it from terminal cause the option in the apps menu won't launch it. Thought maybe I could use the Recovery Mode to fix this issue, but for some strange reason my Recovery Mode is not working. I am unable to scroll to the option of choice with the arrow keys. My system is running OK but should I ever need Recovery Mode this problem prevents me from using it. I started to run fsck from the root terminal, but a warning came up stating that running it on a mounted system may cause severe system damage, so I aborted. Any idea what the problem may be anyone???

LinuxICE Startup Process

I'm starting a thread to discuss the LinuxICE startup process compared to other systems. This is not a "mine's better than yours" thread. Instead, I hope to discuss why LinuxICE boots faster and what the trade-offs/sacrifices are that you will have to live with if you do choose to use LinuxICE.

1) Grub, grub bootstraps the kernel
2) Kernel init - kernel extracts itself off disk and loads itself into memory

3) Kernel scans hardware and then loads drivers for all devices that it has drivers for.

4) init - this is handled by "upstart" which is an event based init daemon capable of concurrently spawning boot processes. The following relevant processes are started by upstart:
- udev - defines rules for devices when they are detected.
- dbus - facilitates communication between system services like udev, devicekit and others
- devicekit/hal - hardware abstraction layer so
- gpsd - handles multiple gps client applications (similar to xport on windows)
- pulseaudio - handles sound
- network-manager - handles the network/wifi stuff

5) X - the X Window server will start and load multiple "session" scripts.

6) LinuxICE session script - This is the LinuxICE session. It spawns the following:
- nscan
- nghost
- icepanel
- obdgpslogger
- window manager
- gnome-keyring
- nm-applet - ui for network-manager

7) nGhost - When nGhost starts, here's what get's loaded:
A) initialization of the gfx engine and window creation.
B) initialization of "screen", skin parsing and loading from xml files
C) loading the main screen images into memory
D) Event engine initialization, initializes player, loads the database
E) Player starts playing music
F) Plugins are loaded:
1) ncarinfo - obdII display
2) ng2dbus - exposes nghost's event system over dbus
3) nvoicesynth - text to voice plugin
4) nweather - weather plugin
G) Main event loop entered.
H) nghost tells nscan to watch the media (usually rescans)

You should now be ready to go with media, obd, network (including 3g connections and bluetooth), navigation weather, and some other niceties.

If you are a user of LinuxICE, or want to be, and are missing that "killer feature", now is the time to speak up. I'll be asking the wife and kids to let me stay up some late nights to get some killer plugins developed for LinuxICE2 starting next week. Hopefully, if you are a developer of sorts (all languages apply), you'll use this list to chose a feature and nail it down. Not familiar with the nghost plugin system? I'll also spend this three week period hand holding anyone who wants to dev a plugin for LinuxICE/nGhost.

Here's what I've got on my mind to do. Please help me decide which features you want most:

- Make nscan "just work"
- Make obdgpslogger/plug-and-play just work
- Vehicle efficiency indicators in NCarInfo ( green == good, red == bad)
- VOne plug (for the valentine 1 radar scanner
- OSDash client and UI (for something)
- Improve documentation on the website.

If you are a dev, these may be a good something to try to make a plugin for:

- m4-atx nghost plugin (code exists, just need UI and plugin)
- Boomzbox plugin
- Any OSDash web service
- Create a skin 100%

Some crazy ideas that make huge changes to nGhost:

- Convert graphics engine/event system to use QGraphics
- General push for more speed and stability in nGhost's core
- Make another frontend work on LinuxICE (including packaging): RevFE and/or OpenMobile

If you want to tackle a feature, let me know. If you would like to see me tackle any of these feature for the marathon, let me know. I'll do as many as I can depending on what you want and the effort involved.

Let's make LinuxICE awesome!

It always starts up right, and is broadcasting correctly. Yet if I go online(usually here to monitor posts or to check my emails), or am doing other things for an extended period of time, then go back and re-check my weather, its not consistently running? Maybe this bug is isolated to my machine only...I seem to have the weirdest issues with mine that no one else seems to have.

I got so frustrated with the usplash issue that I broke down and did a complete re-installation of LinuxICE2(took the whole day to do it). Now I got more than just the one problem(aggravating!!!!!!!!).

The list is as follows...

PARTIALLY RESOLVED: 1) Usplash still no change(should have tried it before updating since it worked in my previous install before updating the kernel).

RESOLVED: 2) Can't get my grub image back up(I saved all my images from my earlier install...was perfect before!).

RESOLVED: 3) Can't get nweather to update my location(even though I changed the zip code in nweather.py, it keeps showing the weather for the default location...also was perfect before!).

4) Still having problems watching youtube videos unless I download to my HD(I can live without resolving this problem...but would be nice to get this fixed).

I'm sure that its not me. I did everything by the book. Any idea what the problem is? These are the only issues I have, but they are bugging me(sort of like if you found a ding or scratch on your week old brand new Benz Coupe). Hopefully These issues can or will be resolved so I can finally be content with my install.

Thanks for any help in advance!!!

UPDATE: Problem #2 has been resolved!

UPDATE: Problem #1 is half resolved. My usplash is working properly on power down. When my system 1st boots up it starts usplash from sda4(my swap area), which always starts but doesn't remain up for the entire boot up sequence. Why?... I don't know. So I edited my menu1st default to always resume from there(it was resuming from sda5). Just got to get the power up side to run completly now...yayyyy!

kEV...Do you think it may be timing out too early?

UPDATE: Problem #3 has been resolved!

I have been trying to get my usplash to stop dropping to a shell during start up and shut down. What do I need to edit in my init.d to make this happen?

Here is what my init.d looks like...

#! /bin/sh
### BEGIN INIT INFO
# Provides: usplash
# Required-Start: $all
# Required-Stop: $all
# Default-Start: 2 3 4 5
# Default-Stop: 0 1 6
# Short-Description: Integrate usplash into the boot process
# Description: This script deals with some awkward details of integrating
# the userspace bootsplash screen into the boot process. On
# start it stops the usplash daemon (counter-intuitive, but
# usplash was already started in the initramfs); on stop, it
# calls usplash_down (unless usplash is already running).
### END INIT INFO
#
# The usplash script makes sure that usplash exits at the end of
# the boot sequence and re-run the console-screen.sh script to make
# sure that the console fonts are actually set

A couple weeks after the 2.0 release and we've pushed over 400Gigs of data! Thanks to everyone who is seeding the torrent. There have been many reports of some issues in the 2.0 image. Some are fixable via update, but some aren't as automatic. For this reason, I will push out a bugfix version of 2.0 that contains all the updates and bug fixes that have gone over the past month. This will be called 2.0.1. What'll be new:

* New kernel: linux-image-linuxice2

If you've updated since installing 2.0, your awesome tuxonice enabled kernel was likely replaced with ubuntu's non-awesome kernel. This breaks hibernation and sleep functionality. To fix this, we will release a new *-linuxice2 kernel. This new kernel has the latest tuxonice with LZO compression enabled by default for super fast resume times. It should just work.

* No more iceinstall

We will be adding several linuxice2 specific versions of ubuntu packages to the repo to replace iceinstall. You will still have to login once, but after you have successfully done that, it'll autologin from then onward. You don't have to run any post-install app to "make things work" anymore.

* Smarter shutdown.

LinuxICE, if it can't hibernate, will just shutdown. Simple as that. This all happens automatically when it traps the powerbutton signal from your smart powersupply.

For existing users:

All of these updates will be available to you before we produce any images. The worst you'll have to do is install the linuxice2 kernel by hand -which is trivial.

This will be a new installation image (DVD) for everyone else.

The icons are now there but I just noticed no weather data is there (It does reflect the correct location). I thought for sure there was before but I may be mistaken. I took a look at nwether.py at it appears it stores the xml dump from weather.com at in /tmp/weather.xml. I looked at the file and there is a current dump with the corect time stamp, location, and forecast data. It would appear then the data is not being dropped into the weather screen. Anything I can check or do at my end? I hate always being a taker!!!:peace:

Thanks to my contact Govee who provided me with directions...I was able to edit my menu icons. I came up with some pretty nice ones to go with my theme. So good that I felt it would only be right to make icon packages to share with whomever would like to spice up their install also. Hopefully Kev000 will like them also enough to include them in an updated iso image of LinuxICE2 along with the Usplash!!!

You can get them here(6 per package)...and don't forget to get the Usplash theme also(In case you missed it)!!!!!

Here is a screenshot of what they look like( they only look rough in this image because I had to use Windows paint to create this screenshot, and it doesn't handle the images format well)...
Comments are welcome!!!!

I noticed the zip was incorrect for the weather pull so I went to /etc/nghost/weather.conf and changed it there. I performed a restart and still the zip was wrong. I then opened /usr/bin/nweather.py and noticed on line 54 that the config file is listed as below:

I said maybe on the "bug" as I am not sure if a complete run of "nghost" in term would get the correct zip enetered.

These are probably all nghost issues, would i be correct?

Tales from a N00b:
so i've tried this on a few different laptops i have lieing around, because honestly i just assumed i was doing something wrong. But i seem to always get the same result.

Situation #1: *worked around*
linuxice loads up fine from the livecd
I select an option (we'll say gps)
then when i try to go "home" nothing happens
when i close the window i get a screen that looks like the "network connection" icon really blown up.. and i lose the option to do anything except open the on screen keyboard, and the file manager. but no matter what when i close that window it goes back to this network configuration screen.

This behavior stopped once I installed it, AND ran the configuration.

After configuration the screen stays blank for a moment or two then reverts to the home screen.

Situation #2 *still looking for workaround*
after installing and running the config some screens will get hung in a state where you seem to be unable to return to the home screen.
I've had this happen on the gpsd plugin
as well as the apps section

in SOME cases you can open another app that has an "x" to close the window (navit/explorer) from the bottom bar and after closing the screen will auto refresh to the home screen. Other times I've noticed that I can then click the back button after closing the screen but it will not go "home" on it's own

If i click (what im guessing is the) next window button, you get back to that happy network window from above. with no way out that I've found as of yet.

I have installed LinuxIce2 on a system with w 15" ELO Touchscreen and when I ran ICETouch I was prompted to input which type of input the screen was using and I entered "3" for usb. When the terminal closed nothing really changed and I get a warning during restart that there is "no usb event touch controller found". Also if I rerun ICETouch I see a properties screen for egalax which has usb with a big red "X" strike through. The touchscreen does work when I touch the screen it responds. unfortunately when I touch the lower left, the mouse is moved to the upper right!

Running "gksudo calibrator" resulted in an awkward 30 second silence then a return to the the prompt?

Is the egaglax appropriate for the ELO? I am making this with a 15" screen and the ELO screens can be had for a song on ebay.

First and foremost...great job on the LinuxICE project so far. At this rate it will be one of the top frontends...Excuse me...The top CarPC OS out there by this time next year.

I do however have a few ideas on what LinuxICE3 should have:
1)More support for VIA based systems!!!!!!!!!!!
2)The ability to change the background image to suit individual preferences
3)An optional bootsplash screen that can be chosen to install in the advanced
option tab of step 7 of the install process
4)The ability to enable transparency for the buttons(so you can see your chosen
background image...that would be sooo sweet)
5)The ability to change your screen resolution for selected windows like Carbon
and Navit
Just a few ideas to think about on the next release...Keep up the good work Kev000 and crew!!!!!!!

I have reinstalled RC1 several times, and have found the following issues:

1. During install, about 82% through I get the system message "An attempt to configure apt to install additional packages from the CD have failed" I only have the Ok (the only choice) button available. The INstalling box says Configuring apt, then the percentage, then Scanning the CD-ROM at the bottom of the box. This CD was burned at 8X. After clicking ok, it goes to scanning the mirror. I have logged on to my network before I started install.

2. I always have to enter my WEP or WAP password (depending on which network I am on) when starting up. I never get a prompt for a keyring to enter a blank to stop this.

3. Still the problem with the screen being over sized, on both the install and installed Linuxice. I understand this is fixed.

4. NSCAN seems to not work. In ps -ef I have a nscan [defunct], which means I think that it died. I also have an active nscan. Or at least it looks active. Nothing in DMESG or /var/log/messages to indicate what is happening. Anyplace else I can look, or debugging I can run? Upon a reboot, it again picks up the first Directory, the first album and the songs in the album. Nothing else on subsequent reboots.

5. ICEconfigure seems to hang. It gets to (the line is only 1/2 visible like superscript) so it's hard to read) "[box]1.24f[box]l4i[box]l0" and just stops. there may be more, but it's cut off on the right side also. I let it sit for 10 minutes with no change the second time. If I go back in try to do it again, it tells me Activating tuxc. Nothing different if I do it again. I have to login via command line everytime also.

6. The system does not detect my Lilliput 8" touchscreen. The video portion appears to work correctly, however the touchscreen will not calibrate. I have reversed axes, and when I touch the calibration targets, it ignores it. There is much out there about how to configure, but nothing that appears to work in 9.04 Ubuntu. I have the internal video screen off, only working on external output.

My machine is a Dell Inspiron 2500 P3 900MHz, 512 MB RAM, 60GB IDE drive, DVDROM, Intel chipset (e81X? series).

I hope these are helpful and what you are looking for in testing.

Did you do an upgrade in the past 2 hours or so (it's now 2:35 PM 12/7/09)?

I did an upgrade and a dpkg-reconfigure, and now I lost the top of the main panel (icepanel?), the part that shows the network connection.

The network icon is now on another page and HUGE, takes almost the full page.

Did I do something wrong?

First, using the RC1 distro installed on my hard drive, are the 3 plugins there? nCarInfo.py, nWeather.py and nGpsd.py? I did a find, and found nothing. Are they on the CD, or do I need to wait for LI2 next week?

Second, how do I update the Audio Library? I have 4 directories with albums in each. The Library only finds the first directory, and the first album in that directory.

Third, is there a way to stop the audio?

I am an Ubuntu noob, coming from XP and Fedora, so excuse some obvious questions. A link would be as helpful, to save typing.

Thanks.

Kev,

I am trying to test Linuxice on an old Dell Inspiron 2500. I need to add pci=noapci to the kernel loading.

Is there a way to do this? As far as I can tell, Linuxice loads and doesn't pause at all to add any parameters to the loading kernel.

I have tried to compile ng3 on Ubuntu 9.10, and can't. No matter what I do, it can't find QTPhonon.

This is not optimal, but money for a p4 or better just isn't there with 2 kids in college.

Any way to do this?

Hi,

I have downloaded NG3 (downloaded the tar.gz for sourceforge -- as I couldn't get svn to work) after installing clutter (all of it) and compiling the source (fixing one compile bug, to be mentioned later) I have things installed on my system in my /opt folder. I was wondering, how do you start the application? I haven't played with clutter before - so if I have to start something there I am unaware.

Also, what is the correct svn command to download nghost?

The compile error I ran into was with NClutterActor.cpp --
it has #include <qt4/QtCore/qtimer.h> (or something similar)
is should be <qtimer.h> as the configure script has -I /usr/local/lib/qt4/include/QtCore/
