We have suggested to many of you to buy a wireless connection to fill your need for constant connectivity. This could be for connectivity on the go or for a backup internet connection when your cable or DSL line goes down. XOHM has merged with clearwire. As part of this merger, all the XOHM hardware is getting deactivated and "Clear" hardware has been sent out as a replacement. We got our new Clear hardware today for our XOHM monthly account. XOHM Promised on November 11th to upgrade our "pay as you go" equipment, but has since backed down on that promise. The XOHM pay as you go plan allowed for people that travel heavily like I do, or only occasionally need on the go access to have a service option by the day or by the week without subscribing to an expensive monthly plan or having long term commitments. Here is a photo of their desktop hardware.

As the day progresses we will add more test results.

I briefly tested the new WiMax service in Atlanta ..... and it is awesome! I installed the Motorola USB dongle in my Lenovo laptop and cruised from Mid-town Atlanta (~10MBps download, ~500k upload) out I-85 north to I-285 west to around I-75 interchange with excellent coverage. Top download speed maxed out the Speakeasy on-line test app at around 11MBps down and ~580k up. The coverage became a bit spotty in Vinings/Smyrna, but I am confident that Clear will continue to fill in the gaps as folks sign up.

This stuff it going to be great!

Boston Wimax Testing - at 65 MPH!

As promised we tested Xohm in Boston on Wednesday. A hex on the skeptics! Image:...

As promised we tested Xohm in Boston on Wednesday. A hex on the skeptics!
Wimax’s black magic is prevalent and resilient in more places than just Baltimore even at 65mph! With a name like Mp3car, we have to test this stuff in our cars...
Below are the results of an in car “driving” test from Boston Logan airport to Weymouth. Keep in mind that Xohm is not officially active in Boston and the network is still in test mode.
Xohm did not work on the runway or inside the airport because they probably don’t have any towers there yet or they are down for upgrades. Xohm DID work at high speeds on the Runway at Baltimore’s BWI so it was not a structure or plane interference issue.

We started driving south away from the BOS airport and before we hit the toll I was getting 2.5 MBPS on my speed test results. The testing didn’t quite finish before we went in the tunnel. So I kept testing all the way to Weymouth. Coverage was patchy, but when it worked, it really worked. Bandwidth speed tests were impressive despite driving at 50-65 mph.
On the maps below you can see a little white man. These men were automatically rendered on my Google map by Xohm’s Location detection feature. They were generally accurate within about 1000ft.

I will write more tomorrow and throughout the weekend on Xohm’s Location Based Services (LBS) and features. For you Boston locals I plan to do speed tests in 3-4 other areas of the city while I am here.

Solrackm’s previous comments and reports of Xohm working in DC inspired me to go down and hear it from the horse’s mouth. I walked down to Xohm’s booth at the Baltimore Fells Point Festival which happens to be steps from Michael Phelp’s new house.
Here is the technical dirt from Mike who works at Xohm (not Mike Phelps). Xohm networks are active in Chicago, Boston, Dallas, Philadelphia, Washington DC, Northern Virginia and of course Baltimore. Mike and his coworkers warned me that the networks will work but are “not supported” and are still being tested. They did say my Samsung expresscard wimax hardware which I bought last week will work even in Chicago which is using Motorola tower equipment. To my knowledge, no coverage area has even been posted for these regions.
For those of you broadband geeks our there, it might be time to UPS air your Baltimore wimax hardware in for your fix of wimax geekery. I am flying to Boston on Wednesday with my Baltimore hardware. When we get there I will let you know how it works at the airport and surrounding suburbs.

Talk about this in our Wimax Forums where this was first reported by one of our users.

My friend Mary checking out Michael Phelps’ new ~1.4 million dollar house around the corner from Xohm's Booth.

What better way to test Xohm’s mobile Wiwmax in a city than sprint(ing) or driving through the city at high speeds while doing connectivity tests? I used Mp3car’s new Guru Car computer for the test.

The shop I purchased my Xohm hardware from only received 8 units on their first delivery, there was one left after I bought mine. I think they also had one or two desktop units. I asked the clerk how they make money on this. Apparently they make a few dollars on the sale of the hardware, but their big money comes through revenue shares after activation. This shop also has IT services so they probably make some money there as well. I fist installed this on a laptop, which happened to be my macbook pro running boot camp and parallels. There are no OSX drivers. Then I moved Xohm to the guru car computer pictured above with an SIIG expresscard to USB adapter. They don’t have any USB units for sale yet, so it is good to know there are options if you can’t wait for USB. I did two bandwidth tests on speakeasy. On one Xohm speed test using speakeasy.net's bandwidth test tool I got 3,255 kbps down 1,349 kbps up. A half hour earlier inside a brick building I got the follwoing results: My main test was to see how connectivity would work while driving and moving between buildings as well as going in lower elevation areas. There have been many skeptics saying that wimax won’t work at high speeds. I could only go about 70mpg and Xohm rarely lost ping packets. I was very impressed. It only dropped a few packets on my 10-15 mile test. Comcast is horrible. I am canceling them and moving to Xohm. Hopefully their network doesn’t get oversubscribed. (Driving test Movie here- editing now) More use and installation details can be found in Mp3Car's Mobile Computing Wimax Forum
