What are my options?

I recently came across this app called TelePort Extender. It's developed by Intel, so of course they programmed the PC client to be incompatible with AMD processors, but if you are using an Intel chipset, it's quite nice. It uses a corresponding app for Android & may be available on iPhone, too. It automatically syncs with your phone when you connect and loads up all your contacts, call history & stored text messages.

My only gripe is the lack of customization options.

Are there any other programs that allow similar integration between smartphones and PC? I'd like to see it go a few steps further and allow calls via the PC, customizable fonts & resizing.

Found this on Intel's website, more clearly describing the software and what it does:

The Intel® Teleport Extender App – Your PC and Smartphone Working Better Together
Posted By Eva Levin onJanuary 20, 2012

Don’t miss a thing – Share your (Android*) smartphone texting and key features securely and conveniently with your PC with Intel® TelePort Extender app.
The top 10 reason why this app is super cool:
Voice call notification with Caller ID right on your desktop even when your smartphone is not in sight
Leverage PC keyboard for easy SMS messaging
SMS conversation window interface makes it easier to follow the discussion
Encrypted connection for safe texting, protecting caller/contact information
Easy setup and pairing of Intel based computer* running Windows 7 and Android smartphone*
Multi-device pairing with auto connection
Phone contact list on PC with picture
Ease of search with call and SMS history archived on PC
Smartphone battery indicator
Send address from PC to phone for easy GPS mapping

Note: *Requires a genuine Intel® processor-based computer with Windows* 7 Home Premium or better OS, Intel® TelePort Extender application installed on the sharing session host PC and each Android device (v2.2 or better). Host PC and devices must be connected to the same wireless network.

I'm determined to get a good carpc setup without using a front end. Is there any stand alone software that allows you to connect via bluetooth to your pc and dial and recieve calls?
1. Windows has this weak system stock, you can connect via bluetooth but very little after that
2. bluesoleil is the only other option i have found, and it seems convoluted. Plus I have a hard time trusting chinese software. interface is too cartoony. Manual and help is always very confusing grammar. And i've only had glitchy experiences.

Quote:

Today, the average smartphone is more powerful than the average embedded infotainment systems. And a system called Terminal Mode has been gaining in popularity in the automotive and mobile industries as the way to tap the power in your pocket.

Terminal Mode is largely based on VNC, the software that enables you to remotely control computer desktops; it allows programs and interfaces to be replicated on other screens. With some tweaking on the back end, that means your in-car navigation screen could become a modified, interactive version of your personal phone, as long as the phone and the vehicle are Terminal Mode–capable. The car and tech companies imagine a synched approach, where touching your car's built-in screen can manipulate your phone's apps. Then, when you disconnect the phone, the car's normal operating system would take over.

(...)
"The significance of Terminal Mode is that it allows applications to be used on various platforms, Lanctot says. "So you could conceivably have [a mobile phone] app that would work on multiple [brands of] cars with only minor differences."

"The carmakers are quite eager to just use the customer's phone as the pipe to the car as opposed to embedding the module," Lanctot says. "That's what this is all about."

(...)
If Terminal Mode truly catches on, this issue will likely be addressed by making sure the application's look can be modified depending on the make and model of the car.

Terminal Mode? Interesting view on the subject. Hate when the subject of driver distraction interfere/cripple with development of interesting stuff, especially at such an early stage, but that's the sign of times I guess.

having a bit of trouble finding a way to keep my cellphone on and connected to my computer in the car.

the problem is the software im using, i cant let the phone reboot because that would require me to start up the internet sharing software manually everytime i get in the car. not to mention the phone is slow when the battery is near 0%, so its best to keep it charged.

i also have to use usb connection for the data, so i cant just keep the phone plugged into a 12v adapter.

i think what im going to have to actually do is physically switch the phone from the computer to the 12v always-on adapter when the computer shuts off. that way the phone can charge while the car is parked, and when the car turns on the phone switches to the computer usb.

monoprice has this usb switch- http://www.monoprice.com/products/pr...mat=4#feedback

i dont think it would be that hard to use a transistor to activate that pushbutton switch... it would have dummy logic since it wouldnt know whats switched a or b, but i would think it would stay synced with my actions once i get it right....

anyone have better ideas? (btw, i tried splicing usb cables. i had the data wires go to the computer, and the power wires cut off and went to a 12v usb adapter. the phone doesnt charge in high amp mode, the phone somehow knows its not getting power from the computer. and when the computer is off, the data wires are not grounded together so the phone still wont charge the battery).

lightning hit a a power pole about 20 yards away, and the battery starts to heat up really fast... to the point where it burns your hand. it died and when it cooled down we turned it on and the wifi dont work and the touch screen quits when it wants too, it restarts all by itself and some times it just wont unlock :)

hes pretty mad but thats what insurance is for right?

my question is has any one heard of something like this? my comp seems fine so i dont think it came from it. weel all know that lightning and corded phones dont mix :phone: but i never thought lightning would kill a cell phone

Has anyone had any difficulty with the iPhone4 charging while attached to this USB hub? The hub that I used to use in my mobile application worked fine with a iPhone 3G running v3.1.3 software, but the new iPhone4 with 4.0.1 I get a pop up saying that this device is not compatable with iphone. If I remove the USB hub, and attach it directly to the computer the phone charges and functions fine.

I noticed that that this hub has a DC power jack on it, would it make any difference if i supplied power to that DC jack? If so how much voltage?

If anyone has any experience with a USB hub that charges the iPhone4 please let me know.

Thanks for reading!

I just love it when the community wins:

"Apple fought hard against the legalization, arguing that jailbreaking was a form of copyright violation. The FCC disagreed, saying that jailbreaking merely enhanced the inter-operability of the phone, and was thus legitimate under fair-use rules." - quoted from link.

Brainstorm - a distributed car install

My install sucks. Touchscreen, pc, audio (yawn). I'm on my third pc at least and all the patching and adding has introduced a wicked ground loop...

My install sucks. Touchscreen, pc, audio (yawn). I'm on my third pc at least and all the patching and adding has introduced a wicked ground loop that won't quit. The whole thing has got to come out and be rebuilt.

But I don't want to put the same old boring setup back in. I want to do something different and that's where I want to brainstorm with everyone.

I want to build a distributed system inside the car using a WiFi hotspot to connect as much stuff as possible. At the heart of the system, I plan using a sheeva plug Linux computer. This plug has no video output but it has USB port and an ethernet connection.

I want to use the plug to connect to the gps, the obii port on the car, and to an external USB drive with the music stored on it. I'll also keep the gps and obdii data on it.

One thing I'll need to figure out is whether I can run a media server on the sheeva to serve the music up. Right now, I'm able to access all of my music on a home computer using a program called dot.tunes that streams the songs to my iPhone. I'd like something like that for the sheeva.

For display, I'd like to use my iPad. Either I will see about using a web page served up from the plug or if necessary, may have to program a front end app. I'll stream the music to the hu via a Bluetooth dongle I've got. I'd replace the hu with an amp but it's a vw monsoon system that would be a pain to replace.

Internet connectivity would be via MyWii that allows tethering using the iPhone as a hotspot.

That's the plan for now, at least. Suggestions are appreciated, particularly on the software side.

[Update: Progress so far]
1. Installed Mediatomb, a upnp player on the Sheeva Plug without incident. The plug is now available to any upnp PC on the network. App for iPad/iPhone tested for audio. Wireless streaming to a 'head' unit of either iPhone or iPad is now possible and Bluetooth connectivity to stereo will enable wireless audio.

2. Hacked dash to bits. Prototype cradle made for iPad screen, working on fab.

3. Rebuilt the iBug computer to integrate Sheeva plug, built power distribution box, converted Sheeva to 5 volt DC power, converted Apple Time Capsule to 5v/12v dc power.

Hi Guys!

This is my first post so you might have to bear with me a little.

I have just bought a 2001 BMW 320d, which sadly, had a horrible Nokia Car Kit installed. I have managed to remove the cradle which was, fortunately, not screwed into the dash. However the cables with connect the crade and speaker are proving somewhat more difficult.

Without removing the whole centre console and tracing the route of the wires I cant remove them. So I was wondering if I could just cut the wires and tape the ends up.

There are 2 wires connected to the cradle. The thinner of the two seems to be connected to the speaker which was mounted in the passanger footwell. The thicker one I have no idea where it goes.

I obviously dont just want to go around clipping cables without some idea of what may happen.

Sorry if this seems a stupid question but electrical stuff really isn't my thing at the moment.

Cheers!!

This post is mainly for Verizon users but in case others have questions. I was having issues with my Windows Mobile HTC Vogue (Verizon xv6900) which ended up being a hardware issue. Long story short...I called Verizon to see what my options as and since my account is VIP (whatever that means) I have an option for discounted upgrades. I was asking mainly about the release for the Omnia II (which is supposed to be released this month, Oct 2009:high5:) but learned even more goods in the process.

The new Verizon pda/smartphones will have open Wifi and open GPS, as opposed to locking these features unless you purchase their navigator software or other commercial product..or flash them. I know to other carriers this may be old news but its a nice change for Verizon. They are gearing up for their new 4G network next year and the new phones will be compatible. One of the cool features I was told is that you can track your phone GPS online and if you lose your phone you will have the ability to erase the data remotely.

I am mainly excited about this because this will add some more functionality and additional integration with my CarPC project. Although the HTC Imagio is tempting...I need the Omnia II for its video-out feature.

Is anyone out there giving their CarPC a dedicated, full-time GSM/GPRS connection, perhaps using a Telit module or something similar? Tethering your CarPC to your mobile phone is certainly less expensive, but that also means your CarPC only has connectivity when your phone is in the car. OTOH, if the CarPC has a connection of its own it opens up a whole new world of possibilities (think On*Star).

*XM SkyDock turns your iPhone into a satellite radio control panel...

XM SkyDock turns your iPhone into a satellite radio control panel

(Credit: Sirius XM)
Like satellite radio, but don't want to deal with the kludge-y "dock and play" satellite radios that clutter up your car's dashboard? The XM SkyDock could be for you. It looks little different than your average iPod car charger, but the SkyDock has a satellite tuner built in. Pop in any iPhone or iPod Touch, run the free SkyDock control app, and the Apple handheld is transformed into a touch-screen control for the satellite radio service.
The app automatically adjusts to landscape (shown) or portrait mode, and the audio stream can be sent either via line-out or the company's "PowerConnect" system, which transmits the audio to most standard car radios via the car's electrical system. Because the SkyDock is plugged into the car's 12-volt power adapter, it also charges the iPhone/iPod Touch while it's in use. We got a brief hands-on demo of the SkyDock earlier today at a Sirius XM event, and it looked to be working smoothly, even with beta software.
Why invest in the SkyDock rather than just firing up the Sirius XM app on your iPhone? The app, as has been widely observed, omits much of "the good stuff." Rights issues preclude many of the service's keystone channels, including MLB Play-by-Play, NFL Play-by-Play, Nascar Radio, and Howard Stern. By contrast, because it's a full-fledged over-the-air satellite radio, the SkyDock offers the entire Sirius XM catalog, including those stations.
The SkyDock app also enables iTunes tagging: hear a song you like on one of the music stations, and a touch of the screen will tag it for later download on iTunes. Naturally, the SkyDock will also play music stored on your iPhone/iPod. (Whether that includes audio from other iPhone apps--such as Pandora, Last.fm, and the like--wasn't specified.) (Note: Last.fm is a part of CBS Interactive, which also publishes CNET News.)
The XM SkyDock will be available this fall for $120. In addition to a compatible iPod Touch or iPhone (any model that runs iPhone OS 3.0 will work), you'll need a valid Sirius XM subscription.

in essense it has the majority of features we already look for within out carputers, and an interface that has been professionally perfected. the only tid bit it might not contain is FM/AM radio, Bluetooth phone interface, and GPS. which maybe depending on what type of OS is being run on the underlying software can possibly be hardwired into the device?

Hi Guys,

I have a Call Direct NextG modem (4th Gen GSM/W-CDMA) installed in my car with a long range external antenna. The modem is connected to the PC via RS-232 serial cable and ethernet. I use it for cellular site testing by issuing AT commands via the serial cable, as well as for normal data connectivity.

http://www.call-direct.com.au/CDM-882seu.php

Now here is my question: Can I integrate this into the CarPC system so I can make and receive calls through an interface like FreeFone? The modem accepts all AT commands so it seems like it should work, but since it doesn't behave like a cellular phone I wasn't sure. For remote and rural area work the modem and antenna setup offers hugely improved signal reception over my Nokia 6120 so it would be great to have this configured as my car-phone!

BTW - I am not wedded to any particular front end yet.

Thanks!
What is the Mobile Manifesto? A discussion about a possible network based future for creating a customized mobile experience. Read on for more detail.

(Sorry for not just editing my own previous post)....

A crazy ide just struck me... Would it be possible to make a frontend application with PHP?
I think it would. And with the use of HTML/CSS, the skin can be just the way you want it to be.

GPS Logger with PHP, possible
Audio/Video player/controller with PHP, possible
Audio streaming, Most defenetly possible :)
Phone interaction, dunno....

Think I will experiment a little with this...
As long as I can get php to talk with my IBUS controller, this could be what I want to do... Just because I can, not because it's practicall...

A system like this, could run on every possible OS that supports a webserver, php and sql. It would be scalable, since one could build new modules, and GUI can be "shipped" standard, or left to the user to custom build the GUI as they want it.

It might be a bit slower than other front end system available...

scrapp??? or a good idea?

Eureka! That's exactly what I've been thinking about, but I thought I might put this thread off topic by suggesting it.

This idea solves several problems:
1. OS dependence, which limits adoption
2. Device dependence. One could run this front end not only on a car PC but also a mobile device such as a Windows Mobile phone or iPhone. Anything with a decent browser.
3. Allowing the user to customize the GUI on a website using Flash objects they drag around and configure increases access to those without technical skills.
4. Dynamic menus and configuration are introduced. Relying on the network to load the GUI means you can update the menus once on the server and the new menus are available on ALL devices.
5. Moving some of the computing resources to the net reduces the need to take up storage with monolithic programs.
6. A net-native application has access to everything the net has to offer. All data, all computing resources.
7. Moves more into a 'mobile experience' that blurs the lines between device (car PC) and task (in-car) and real life. (Imagine the FE would switch from in car use when you arrive at home and loads a home automation control menu, or turns on the lights in your house)

Disadvantages:
1. Obviously, the downside is that when not connected to the net the user would experience interruption of service.
2. Right now, many users do not have internet data service inexpensively. However, in the next few years, that will be less and less of a problem.

I have one additional thought in this area that goes along the lines of the plug-ins. I think that Service Oriented Architectures hold a great deal of promise for delivering a mobile experience to various devices.

If one were to create a bare bones 'container application' on the mobile device (possibly a browser or perhaps more likely a java app) that effectively operates as the user interface, services could be constructed the run on the web server and function much like plug-ins. Users could configure those services to define the functionality that they would like to have.

As a simple example, the bare bones app might be able to access and relay the GPS location to the server. A service could be written that would monitor location while downloading the .csv file on Trapster.com every minute (lists the locations of radar speed traps). It would calculate when you are near a trap and send a message to the device (could be text, could be an audio file announcing the trap and location). The bare bones app would then respond the the message by displaying it or playing it.

As other, better services are added, the user would be able to access them and mix and match them to build a truly customized mobile experience.

Ummm...I guess this is a long way around of saying I really LIKE that idea.

Hi there,
We're playing with our GROM box to play internet radio via GSM 3G network directly to the stereo without the need of any PC or extra device.
So this way you can map you disks directly into favourite station and switch between in a second.
Of course you will need 3G USB modem and valid subscription for data plan. But at least the quality won't be 64KBps as in crappy Sirius/XM/HD.
We will have first beta release of the device on July-August.
Any comments, suggestions ?

I am thinking of doing a carputer, and if so I would want wireless internet.

I have always used a cable for my home computer, and I got Cyberdefender protecting me from viruses and stuff.

By using a wireless connection with a carputer, does the risk of getting viruses go up or down?

Since I would only be on-line for short periods and mostly specific sites, do I still need anti-virus (I am happy with Cyberdefender, but I don't want to buy another license if I don't need to)?

Based on our experiences at CES this year MP3car is creating this new forum. “Mobile phone meshing – Safely Connect your car to the internet cloud”

This forum is going to be a lot more than just connecting. This is going to be the place to talk about hacking and meshing your mobile computing devices into the car. If we can find a way to connect Iphones and smart phones into existing in vehicle displays and controls, this will be a wonderful benefit for those of us who just want to carry one device and developers trying to prove out connected car concepts.

Same of the challenges we need to work on:

Phone user interface retooling and modifications for the driver

Connecting your smart phone to the car

Connecting accessories to the above (hard drives, flash memory, GPS, engine diagnostics, tracking)

Mirroring your built in phone display with the display in the car

We have also created a specific iphone section to talk about some of the early progress already being made to mirror the video content of the iphone with external displays - an excellent start to phone phone car meshing.
