Got an old laptop I thought I'd give this a go with.

Thoughts are to get a laptop car charger and hard wire it to the battery via a relay that'll only give power with the ignition. Laptop comes with a program to only charge it to 80% to help preserve it?

Is there any reason this shouldn't be done? Could hard wire a switch before the relay for the long journeys.

Now the next bit I couldn't find a definitive answer after a search.

Centrafuse can put the laptop into standby, where it still loads up in a few seconds by pressing the power button - great.

Pulse relay gets the computer on with the ignition, easy enough.

So does Centrafuse have a function to be able to put the laptop in standby mode automatically with an input and how do you give it that input?

Hello guys, I am currently trying to follow WarDriver's Simple and Clean Remote Laptop Power Switch (http://www.mp3car.com/vbulletin/how-...-switch-3.html). I just took apart the laptop bezel and i've reached somewhat of a brick wall. I have little experience in soldering, so this only makes it tougher. The contact pads where I am supposed to solder are EXTREMELY SMALL and almost covered up by the button itself! The picture below is not great, but hopefully you can see what i'm talking about.

Is it those little points on the corner that i would solder to, after testing the continuity? This is going to be a major pain in the *** lol.

Ok so here is my plan. I have a netbook kav60 acer that I will be adding to my build.

The idea is to keep the computer in sleep mode when not in use which will be wired directly to the car battery drawing a minimal
~1watt at 19Vs or 50mA's.

now a normal battery has around 70A/h, so putting a small 50mA drain on it would theoretically be an ineffectual drain on the battery. 10 days in sleep would still draw less then 20A hours when adding other components and taking P/S inefficiencies into account.

SO, does anyone know of any reason that this idea would be a bad idea?

Hi,

I wanted to have an external remote power button on my netbook, therefore I opened it and managed to put 2 wires from the button inside, as given a tutorial here
http://www.mp3car.com/how-to-power-a...er-switch.html

The external button works, but one big problem remains:
I cannot power UP the netbook when the lid is closed, even if I press the external remote power button?

Instead, when lid is opened, the remote button works perfectly!

Does anyone has any idea how to fix this?

Hi All,
I've read up on the P2140 and seen a couple of videos and I think I understand, but I have a couple of questions.

I'm basically wanting to power my laptop my turning the switch on, and away I go.. Simple as that, no ignition turn on or anything like that.

Anyway, first question is, on one of the wires on the P2140 it is used for telling the PSU the car ignition is on OR a switch is on - once this is on, it provides power to the laptop - correct?

However, if I just plug the power into my laptop, it doesn't automatically power on. So I'm going to need to extend the switch from the laptop to the car - correct?

If I'm right in what I've said so far, if I want a switch to turn the laptop on, then I will need two switches? One for the PSU and one for the laptop? - If this is correct, then how can I use one switch instead!?

Thank you! :)

hi guys
I'm pretty new to all this car customizing stuff.
A month ago I put in a active subwoofer and a radio.
that went quite well, and was fun to do.

Now I have an old laptop that has a busted keyboard and i was wondering how to install this in a car.

I've nosed around the internet/forum but there is no real guide to this, and seeing as everylaptop is probably different i can assume why.

anyways.

my big question is: Is there a 12v to 9v adapter.
I think its a bit lame to stick a sigaret-lighter converter that goes from 12v>230v>19v.

I also wonder if it is possible to put in a secound battary,as a reserve one(still dont know why cars only have 1 battary), that loads when driving but only unloads into the laptop.

and are there ways to unatach and extend the laptop screen(using the same powersource, ofcoarse) and attach it somewhere else (thinking of putting it on the viser) that way can use the laptop screen, and save me a screen-purchase and another powersource problem.

I dont know if i'm looking at this the right way, but those seem to be the problems that come in mind.

Hey guys,

I'm a complete n00b to carputer stuff and have no clue when it comes down to electronics/circuitry/wiring. In either case, I wanted to go ahead and experiment with installing a laptop in my car for carputer purposes. I'm having trouble visualizing exactly what and where to supply power though.

I've heard that I can buy an auto/air adapter off ebay, cut off the cigarette adapter end, and wire the positive to the positive of the battery and the negative to the negative or ground (metal grounded part of the car). I also wanted to install a router (or small footprint device with ddwrt) that would send a WOL packet to the laptop to power it on. All this based on when I start the car. I read the FAQ on relays and that I can install a relay chained off the IGN/ACC wiring (where is all this?). I'd then send an extension/wire to the boot and connect the auto air adapter. Then comes the issue of fuses and the placement of those (do I need just one, or more?). I'm just not sure where and what order everything goes.

Would someone be so kind as to draw out a simple text illustration? Like [battery]->IGN/ACC->Fused wire->relay->auto adapter/router adapter->laptop/router

And if I wanted to power the router as well, where would that fit in? Would I have to buy another special adapter for that and splice it into the fused wire? Or could I splice it into the auto adapter?

I don't want to spend a lot of money on one of those fancy DC-to-DC pre-built boxes (OPUS, etc) and just want a 'simple' solution as this is more of an experiment (and to gain knowledge of how to).

Sorry for all the n00bness!

TIA!

My HP Mini is alllllmost working like I need it to. Last step (well, prior to wiring in Carnetix) is to get Wake from anything (LAN, Link, USB) working.

After some playing with Wake on Link in Windows 7 I found I had to update the ethernet card's drivers. Now it wakes up no problem from hibernate/standby as long as the AC adaptor is plugged in.

The problem is that this simply won't work in an auto environment. As soon as the ignition is turned off the power is cut to the laptop. At this point the only way to wake it up is to use the power button.
Anyone managed to get Windows to keep the ethernet port powered in hibernation?

Of course the one extra laptop I have (Dell D600) to use as a carpc has some kind of funky power adapter that doesnt not allow me to run the laptop in a dock powered by a carnetix p1900 so I could easily remove it from the trunk whenever I wished...

So I guess I am going to have to permenently mount the laptop on its own in the trunk  and power it through the carnetix. From what I have searched on it will run the laptop but wont charge it. (is that correct?)

So with the laptop connected to the Carnetix I am not very clear as to the laptops behavior when the car is turned on or shut off... so here are my questions...

Does the PC automatically boot up when the ignition is turned on through Carnetix?

Does it automatically shut down when car is off?

If neither what do people use as a solution an external power button??

Is there any way people know of to be able to run this laptop through the carnetix p1900 using the docking station???

I decided to incorperate an external power switch into the laptop just so I can reboot the pc if needed from the dash .. ( and maybe to control on/off if carnetix dosent)

When I opened up the laptop this is what I found under the power button

Im not sure which tiny little post I need to solder the two wires to but im sure I will be able to figure it out this afternoon with a multimeter.

I bought a HP smart car/ac/air smart charger to power my carpc laptop. Running on laptop battery there is no noise on the car speakers, plugging the charger results in noise the resembles hard disk activity. It also affects the touchscreen display. Previously I was using a different laptop with an iGo universal DC/DC adapter and only once in a while you could hear a very faint hard disk like noise.
I think I understand why AC to DC switching converters generate noise but I didnt expect DC to DC to generate this much noise. Im experiemnting with moving the charger around and Im going to try wrapping it in tin foil and grounding it. Why is this much noise produced and how can it be eliminated?

I dont have much space on my car and the laptop and charger are pretty much contained in a space just behind the touchscreen (where the double-din radio used to be).

I want to run a DC-DC connection to power the laptop as well as have the laptop automatically power on / shutdown when the car is turned on/off. The laptop does support WOL, but the modem cannot be set to a specific port. I would be willing to hardwire to the power button. I have limited knowledge with custom wiring. I need to know what to buy and how the components should be connected. My main concerns are draining the car battery and frying the motherboard of the laptop. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi All,

I am planning to gear up my own Carputer using my old Acer Laptop.
I have been searching and reading a lot of forum posts for my question.

I found many people placing laptops for carpcs and they have excellent solutions for auto power up / shutdown.

From what all i have learned till now i have tried to put up a design to power my laptop, screen and devices
I will be using M2-ATX (instead of CarNetix 1900) incase my laptop dies and i have to switch to a PC.

Question i have is

When i power down Ignition of my car, the laptop will still be connected to the Car battery from M2-ATX. Thus laptop will continuously draw power from car battery to charge laptop battery. Wont it kill my car battery?
Or M2-ATX cuts the power to the laptop when ignition is cut off.

Consider me a total noob in powering :nerd:

Thanks a lot

UPDATE: This thread originally started as a project to solar charge your laptop/netbook in the car. I now have a new CarPC project in progress and decided to update this thread to integrating solar energy in your CarPC project to make it more diverse. Stay tuned for updates. I will request for this to moved to be the Worklogs section of the forums.

--------------

Ok so my next major enhancement to my project is to use solar energy to keep my Eeepc charged. I thought I would post this here since its related to power and I will link to this post in my worklog.

**Of course your car needs to be in good sunlight in order to use this and my car is always in the sun so why not use it.Where I live there is plenty of Sun to go around...maybe a little too much

I will post my brainstorm diagram image later. In the meantime here are my source references on the major components I plan to use:

Solar Battery w/ Charge Controller

Two 6v flexible solar panel to equal 12v

More or less...I am a newbie to Solar energy but I think starting small with a project like this one will be a great start...My car is green in color, why not make my electronics green :high5:

******** EDIT ***********

Alrighty..here are my 'rough' brainstorm images/diagram

One of my ideas for placement of the flexible solar panels is fused to the bra somehow. The company that manufactures these also does custom for OEM projects and I am hoping they can fabricate these in black. There may be a concern regarding pebbles or debris. These panels are supposedly designed with 'rugged' in mind. Why not put to the test and see. Fortunately for me I do not do a lot of highway driving so this may not be a huge concern for now.

This is my ...more or less.. layout or scheme

Any thoughts or other ideas please share and post away! :peace:

I'm no wiring guru, so you guys may be able to work out the best way to plumb this in.

I think it should be straight forward enough to make a basic startup/shutdown controller for a laptop, with minimal soldering.
To power up, you would solder two wires to the power on switch. This is where the wiring chaps would come in. How would you wire this up to a relay to only provide a momentary connection between the two points?
Once this bit has been figured out, follow this post to fool your laptop into thinking there is a UPS present to activate the shutdown.
http://www.mp3car.com/vbulletin/383433-post21.html

Here is the thing. In your windows power settings, you can set the behaviour of the power switch once you've booted into windows. If you tell it to "Do Nothing" when the power button is pressed in windows, then everything should work.

Does this sound OK, or have I lost the plot at 01:33 on a Monday morning?

hey so Ive really just been doing research on this forum but its now time to ask questions. Ive had a full working car puter but this being the second time around I want to make the system as integrated and intuitive as possible.

Hardware: Dell Inspiron 1100 (already hard wired external switch that works as the normal power button.

Car: Acura Rsx

I want to have the computer startup as early as possible.
- so 90 percent of the time I use the unlock remote. So i wanted to tap into the relay. (does anyone know were this is located?)

- if i cant do that, the two doors have a switches that turns on the cabin lights. But that would be continuous power for as long as the door is open which wouldnt work well for switch.

what other options do I have?

I am working up plans to turn my Gateway 7415GX laptop into a carputer. Its a fairly fast laptop with a AMD Athlon 64 3000+ processor, dedicated ATI 9600 64MB vid card and soon to be nearly 1TB of HDD. Plenty for a carputer

I want to mold in a 7-9" monitor in the lower dash of my Explorer where the current waste of space trip computer is. (say OBD-II and Dash Commander Light). I also want to power a compliment of USB's with bluetooth, a Blu-ray USB drive mounted where the stock HU used to be, GPS and, well, everything else you can think of. Oh, also will be adding a USB based Sirius Sat Radio. I want to run all of the audio through an external high quality (Sound Blaster) external sound card to my Arc Audio EQ/Line Driver and out to my amps and speakers. This will create front, rear and a sub channel off a stereo input with 9v output and low noise floor. The audio section is already installed and sounds superb as its designed to be an SQ rig. I am good with car audio.

I am good with computers in office settings but get them into a car, avoiding a DC to AC converter which we always used on short trips, and well, I am lost.

I have read 100+ posts and visited many DC to DC manufacturers but for the life of me cannot understand the whole concept. My laptop appears to not have a "docking station" so I am forced down the hard path. I kinda get rewiring the laptop shutoff switch but with so many features involved I get lost. Seems to me it would be so much easier if their was a "box" that was wire into the 12v system (heck, I could pull power and ground from my distro system). Into this box we could plug all of our add ons.

Don't know what my question is. I am sure I will figure it out. I have built some sick car audio systems but so far am lost. If you got a nugget or tip or roadmap then hit me up.

Never thought wiring a soon to be mostly dismantled laptop would be so confusing. I will stop as its late and I am rambling.

I have a 17" Laptop that has a broken charging circuit.

It won't charge from the mains, and it won't run off the mains. Whilst trying to recover the data I found out I could remove the battery and directly wire 12 volts to two of the pins and it ran perfectly for a fair few hours.

My only problem was how hot the cable got between the battery and the laptop. I initialy used a fag lighter plug with the cable which came on it (think it was off a tyre pump) the wire got warm to the touch and eventually the solder melted in the fag lighter plug and the wires dropped off. I then used crocidile clips which improved things but the wire was still warm.

Once the data was recovered the laptop has sat in a box for the last few months.

However we've just bought a caravan and I was thinking it would make a perfect flat screen TV (I've got a USB freeview dongle) and media centre for the caravan.

The caravan has a permanent 12v supply when it's running off the leisure battery or the mains.

My thoughts were to mount it in the cupboard and extend the cable to the monitor so the monitor could be mounted on one of the walls.

Has anyone else powered a laptop like this? Any thoughts? I'm not fussed about the fact that it will shut down when power runs out etc as the supply will be permanent enough (not like starting up / switching off the car)

Obviously thicker cable would help with the warmth of the cable.

Going go be using a laptop in the Z and I will need it to be portable so I can tune the car. This is my idea to power it. I was going to cut off the AC to DC converter and run it straight to a 12v power source that is on when the car is running. Then the other end will just plug into the laptop and I would be able to move the laptop in and out of the space easily.

I would have it go into hibernation when the power is shut off to save the battery. What do you guys think? Good idea? Is there an easier way?

Alright before i get flamed, understand that I have thoroughly searched through the forums a number of times over the last 18 months. I have my car PC put together but am having difficulty understanding one last piece. I want to connect my laptop to the Carnetix CNX-P2140.

I understand that I need to cut open the barrel plug from the laptop adapter and split the three ends (+, Ground, and comm wire) to put into the Main jumper to the Carnetix. Can I use something such as a universal laptop car adapter from Ebay, hack that open and plug it into the laptop -----> Carnetix instead of using the battery power chord that came with the laptop?

If so, any reccomendations/warnings?

Hello,

I myself have a laptop in my car that has a "pressure" switch for ON/OFF. By this i mean that the switch itself has the wiring inside so its impossible to plug any wires there. In my case if you even touch with a single wire the other side of switch the PC starts.... Was really irritating...

I needed to break down the laptop and saw that on the same board there is a different location that relays the link to switch. Then you can try around there with wires wich connection will boot the PC up. I'll add some pictures of my installation for this.

Good Luck!

I have a HP ZD8000 that I don't have much use for any more and would like to use this as my car PC to replace my current system. My problem though is trying to power the laptop on/off when the engine turns on/off.

I understand that I can use some sort of "power on LAN" switch, but not sure where I need to connect it to on my laptop. Also, I understand that I can solder two wires to my power on button (or the area atleast), however I am having a hard time figuring out exactly where to put this. This seems to be the most difficult part of the project. Any suggestions?

I'm preparing a toshiba satellite P20 for a carputer however I have an annoying power management issue.

I set my computer to standby after 1 minute and hibernate after 3 minutes when running on battery. The computer goes into standby fine, but the problem is it never hibernates. If I set it to just go straight into hibernation it works fine. If I use the standby then hibernate settings when running on AC power, the computer successfully wakes from standby and then hibernates. The battery on the laptop is a bit cactus (I'm guessing it holds a charge for at least 5 mins though) Its the only thing that I can think of that might be causing the problem. Should I replace my battery? Has anybody else experienced a similar problem? What gets me is I'm sure that the battery has enough juice to do what I'm asking. Its not in great shape, but it has enough. Its almost like XP is confused that there's not enough power to wake from standby and hibernate.

This mod has helped me and I wanted to share it with the community. On 4-27-06 I posted the first hints of this project here. I've been meaning to convert it to a a how-to...so here it is.

Pictures, comments and improvements are welcome.

*The mod below also works great with my remote inverter switch mod*

Rational:
-I want to be able to turn off and turn on my laptop carputer from the driver’s seat of my car.
-I don’t want to hack up my laptop so it is un-useable or looks funny.
-I want the solution to be simple, clean and easy for a person of average skill to replicate.
-It has to be cheap

Parts I already had:
-Laptop - acquired for free because someone thought it was broken
-Old network cable for wiring
-Momentary on switch from some old project.=
Additional Parts Required:
Stereo audio jack female (Radio Shack $3 this or this)
Stereo audio jack male (Radio Shack $4 this or this)
Total $7

Tools Required:
Drill w/Bit
Soldering Iron
Solder
Electrical Tape
Muti-Meter

I would like to make it look as stock as stock and clean as possible. This is a simple idea, replicate remotely what the physical pushing of the power button will do to your laptop.

So to start lets gather the parts. A quick trip to radio shack and I’m ready to roll. I used the 1/8" because the nut shank on the 3/32" was too small.

Choose what is right for you. First you'll need to get to your power switch. I can' t help you there, but with a little patience and some help from Google I'm sure you can figure it out. If you can't get to your power switch that is probably a good indicator you shouldn't be doing this mod.

Laptops (typically) use a momentary on switch to initiate the boot, resume from hibernate or shutdown depending on how your OS is configured. Once the case is open locate the power switch and break out your multi-meter. Leave out the battery and AC connector and start trying to figure out which two pins "close" when you press the power button. I just used the beep setting on my multi-meter.

Once the pins are located, locate a good spot to mount the female stereo jack. I used a stereo jack because the left and right channels are insulated from each other and the common ground.

Strip the ends of some very small gauge wire, I used an old network cord I had laying around. It worked great. Fire up the soldering gun and connect one wire to each of the pins you located earlier. Make sure you use an overly long piece of wire, always easier to cut it shorter than to make it longer.

Drill the hole for the female jack in the spot you located earlier. I wanted to place my jack in the back of my laptop, but I could not get the space necessary, so I opted for the side. Test fit the jack in the hole. Create a test route for your wire, making sure it will clear all of your components once your laptop is back together. Cut the wire to length and solder to the female jack.

Solder some more old network cable wire to a male plug on the left and right channels. Strip the other end of the wire but make sure they don't touch. Reassemble your laptop enough to see if it will power on. Connect the male jack, put in your battery or AC plug and touch the wires together. If it fired up hold them together to see if it will hard stop it self.
