I'm actively trying to get in touch with magnetik again.

It seems like I'm hopelessly drawn back into the greatness and simplicity of Autoplay.

[Backstory]
After my tragic loss of "Rock The Rolvo" MP3 Player, I lost interest for a long time. Now I'm building a Home Media PC. I have all my DVDs already in MPEG-2 and my MP3's organized by M3U... where could I find a program to play these without needing a touchscreen or getting something like MythTV.

Gee golly gosh its Autoplay. wow. Who knew? With an IRMAN, Autoplay will do everything I need to do.
[/Backstory]

I'm certain that Autoplay is still a viable frontend. It is an excellent alternative to those who don't want a touchscreen interface. The graphics are extremely simple and intuitive, and my grandmother could change the skins since they are just BMP files.

It currently runs over Winamp 2.93. Imagine if we were to upgrade it to running the current Winamp? "AutoRip?" "AutoBurn" "AutoSync (with MP3 Player)?" "AutoDVD?"

In total, I'm proposing a "low-end" alternative frontend that's not terribly feature packed but rock-solid.:yum: I know someone wants this besides me. Maybe if we bug the poor chap enough he'll relinquish that source. If not, theres a website that does decompiling... that costs money and I'll only go that route as a last resort.

Ok this software looks the best potentially from wat i've seen, lets winamp do the work and does its job well. I'm gona put a phat list of stuff i can't do or the software can't do here. I hope its not taken as offensive, i'm just putting suggestions that I hope 2 see in the new version. Here goes:

My trackname is shown at the top but thers no visualisation at the bottom. I think ther shud b so y isnt it ther?

The track selection is excellent, with the folders, playlists and then the ability to put it all in 1. Its just like winamp and thats how it shud b, cuz they've spent years refining it. If shuffle and repeat cud b incorporated that wud b gr8 as well. One crucial feature I feel is missing is the 'j' feature wher u simply press j, type the first few letters of a track u want, scroll 2 the correct one and press enter. It offers very quick selection and is pretty much the best way I no 2 get ne song u want.

Optional mouse integration could b a good idea for those who use a trackball/mouse.

Finally, my video will play in winamp but not in the actual auto play screen (so effectively its not visible 2 the user). I dont no why this is but perhaps wen a video is selected it shud load the video in the main screen like an mp3 with the name at the top and then scroll the top bar upwards (to go complete full screen). Perhaps every time a mouse movement is detected (or button press like volume) the top bar could scroll down again. This is very similar to Window Media Player 9 (maybe that could/should be incorporated).

Like I say I'm tryin 2 giv constructive criticism cuz I'd like 2 c this software reach its potential.

Its that time again........

Here are the features -

Nested playlisting to virtually an unlimited depth. I know alot of people with their mega mp3 collections will be happy about this.

Ability to resize the Autoplay window/screen size. Again requested by quite a few in the past - mainly due to the fact that their TV out video card & TFT screen behaves alot better at an 800x600 res.... Be aware that AP is still 640x480 at heart, so increasing the screen size will in no way improve the resolution of the application. Its basically like zooming in on an image file in your fave imagning proggie

current playback volume is now saved switching between MP3/Video playback modes

Tweaked default skin colors slightly - easier on the eye

Packaged the latest Winamp 2.90

as always, keep the bugs/suggestions comming. As the regulars will have noticed, I have slowed down a little lately - due to work commitments and the fact that I have just setup a new business for myself (web site application development) which as exciting as it is - takes up a HEAP of time.

But be assured that I am still enjoying the work on AP - and will keep it going for quite a while yet - or at least until I feel my personal wishlist of features are meet... ;)

as always get the latest build from - http://autoplay.magnetikonline.com

I am writing a listbox usercontrol that will replace all of mediaengine's hard coded (per form) list code. Right now its just a "label(0).visible=false then load more labels and dump the text onto them" type system. I use a shape for the selection bar. I was hoping that you might clue me in as to how to bitblt a scrolling listbox so that it doesn't look clunky like it does now. Please email me if you are willing to help :)

Finally, a new version!

Here is whats new -

Rewrote the entire GFX system to use DirectDraw as apposed to Bitblt for a huge speed increase. Also means that AutoPlay now nice and smooth on the highly popular EPIA 800 motherboards.

Implemented a very basic skin system, allowing for better management and selection of custom skins through the new 'skinfolder=' parameter in autoplay.ini, 'skins' folder and skin.ini file(s). Should be easy enough to work out.

as always, any bugs/errors/gripes post em here so I can hopefully solve em. With the changes to skin system (for the better) you will need to re-jig your previous skins - but it shouldnt prove to be too much of a hassle. Just have a look at the "skin.ini" file, basically all the font/color information is now covered in this file instead of autoplay.ini.

As for the next lot of enhancements - nested playlists is the first thing I want to implement, then fast forward/rewind options in the mp3 player section... but other suggestions, as always will be noted ;)

I am sure that this program is awesome and I appreciate the time spent making the perfect program for a custom mp3 player. However, no matter what i do, I can not bind the keys. I bind them and save the file then go back and the file did not update. I click on the default box and change it, then go back and its set back at "Q". I have deleted the file and made a new one.....still does the same thing. I tried it on four different computers and it does the same thing.

I am well aware this program works with other people so it doesnt do any good for people to reply with "it works on mine". Like I said, I am well aware that is works on most peoples system.

maybe magnetik can answer it.
Thanks.

Hey Autoplay fans and foes!

some very good news regarding the next version of this software. I am about 98% thru completing the BiltBlt --> DirectX GUI conversion for public release in the next version, which has taken quite a while (over a month since my last release now!) but has been well worth the efforts!!!

Just tested a build with my mp3car system (running an EPIA 800) and it runs fantastic!!! All the scroll in/out slowdowns that are a problem with the EPIA's with the current 1.31 release are ALL GONE.... this thing is now smooth as you could hope for which is good news for you AutoPlay/EPIA users (you know who you are!)

so expect the next release within the next week, not much else will be added except for the DirectX GUI, but for EPIA 800 users it will be well worth the download...

and in closing.... DX kicks over BitBlt!! :D

I love the bar spectrum analyzer, I always wanted a good bar analyzer plugin for winamp but never found one. You should team up with media engine cause media engine is a little dull looking too much like computer regular software.

I got to thinking today after having the mp3 car toss its operating system cookies, perhaps an option for shutdown in the next release of autoplay. It should be really simple to implement (mabey?).

Also how do you like these for errors....

starting normally--- cannot read from drive C: abort retry etc.

trying safe mode --- trouble loading driver VKD A.K.A you are now screwed

As promised another very minor update to help fix the window focus problems that some people have been having that has been discussed here.
http://www.mp3car.com/vbulletin/show...threadid=12117

It mainly relates to winamp stealing focus when mp3 playback starts. I have never seen the problem myself... but this should fix it anyway! Users of Media Engine suposedly have had the same drama's too...

if anyone still has issues related to this matter let me know ASAP, otherwise I consider this case closed :D

After about a year of ignoring the car puter, this software has inspired me to give it another shot. I have it installed on Celeron 500 w/ 128 megs of ram, Win 98, yadda yadda yadda... typical system being run around here.

Heres my problem; I have autoplay 1.3 set as shell and it all works fine except for when I try to play a track. The Winamp vis steals focus away from autoplay and it requires a click up on the track name to regain control of the system. This is a problem as I dont want to have to use a mouse.

So, is there any way to 'lock' autoplay in the focus?

Thanks for reviewing this problem.

P.S. I did install all the VB runtime files and all the other stuff that you mentioned on your website.

Finally got another release 'out the door' - most likely the last one for this year with XMas/NYE commitments comming up :D

anyway, heres whats new -

Ability to re-define keyboard control keys via the new 'keyboardsetup.exe' utility.

Added a 'Loading...' message to the start of the video playback routine when playback takes some time to startup.

Initial startup volume can now be defined through a 'startupvolumestep' parameter in 'autoplay.ini'.

Video player now loads .mpg and .mpeg video files along with .avi files.

and a few other changes/fixes

assuming that all of the major bugs/errors are now solved my next programming efforts will be focused on -

allowing the nesting of mp3 folders (for genre/artist/album grouping, etc...)

the ability to select mp3 tracks in the current playlist without stopping current audio playback.

These are both features that have been requested alot and im starting to think I would like them too!

As always, keep the comments/bugs/ideas comming.... and enjoy..

EDIT : Sorry for the second posting, but I felt that now Auto-Play has its own little 'world' to co-exist in that I should post a thread for each new release, that way threads don't get too big and we can keep bugs/questions/errors related to their rightful/specfic release version. I addition it makes for a nice announcement system for new versions of Auto-Play in the future...

Well here it is, version 1.2 of Auto-Play. Here are the highlights -

All file read/write routines now use native VB6 calls, eliminating the need for the 'scrrun.dll'.

Improved folder/file checking routines which should eliminate some possible file access issues.

Generated playlists no longer uses drive letter specific mp3 file paths. This works better where you organize your mp3 media and execute playlistbuild.exe on a PC different from your mp3car PC and the drive letter mappings are different.

Removed the need for 'mscomctl.ocx' with playlistbuild.exe, which should fix most peoples problems trying to get this to run.

mp3s that cannot have their time info successfully calculated by playlistbuild.exe are now added to the playlist with a zero time length, instead of halting the program. I am still on the lookout for some more reliable mp3 time reading source code to solve this issue.

The IRMan keypress config file is now saved/loaded as irman.bin and must now be present in the same folder as autoplay.exe.

Winamp now shuts down automatically on program exit.

Leaving blank/omitting the videopath parameter in autoplay.ini will disable the DivX playback ability.

A few other minor bug fixes/improvements.

basically its just an update to fix the bulk of the problems/issues people were having with the software upto this point. If all is good now, I will now starting looking at expanding the flexbility of the software/new features.

Anyway, try it out (again) - if there are any troubles/problems be sure to report them back, the feedback upto this point has been nothing short of unreal... and very helpful - thanks guys...

As a side note, I discovered that after re-installing windows 98/98lite on my mp3car PC you need to install the 'Direct Media & Active Movie' components within windows setup in addtion to the DivX CODEC for DivX playback to work successfully. This should only be an issue for win95/98 OS as far as I know.

enjoy.....

Hey all,

well I finally got around to getting my mp3car/divX application to an initial release. The software is currently called "Auto-Play", until such times I can think of a better title :) And version 1.0 seemed like a good starting point....

To sum it up briefly it has been coded in Visual Basic 6, provides mp3 audio playback (through winamp 2.81), visulisations, playlisting/album support, divX video playback (very happy about this), ability to change the GFX/fonts/colors to personalise the look and a all GFX interface with not one VB6 control in sight ;)

Controls are provided thru either an IRman (preferred method) or a keyboard/keypad.... and thats about it for the moment. When my work load dies down a little I am hoping to get back into it and add more bells and whistles/fixes and improvements.

Be sure to read the install notes on the website after downloading, since it is a little bit rough around the edges, but once installed does seem to run very smoothly both on my desktop and more importantly in the car.

Of course if anyone has questions/comments/problems/needs help/bugs (there will be a few I am sure!).... either drop me an email, or just drop a post in here. Hopefully a few of you find it to be useful in your mp3car setups.... ;)

Get it (currently version 1.2) from : http://autoplay.magnetikonline.com

and now for some screenys to get you in the mood......
