I finally decided to upgrade my CarPC to use Windows 8 as the OS.
I did this primarily because it is the much faster booting up with a solid state hard drive than any other versions of windows out there.
However I have had to trade off a few things to get this.
Notable of which is now my dependable GlobalSat BU-353 GPS receiver.
honestly I am not 100% certain if it is because I am running the 64- bit version of the OS butt I noticed that my GPS receiver would constantly not start in the device manger.

I uninstalled and re-installed the Prolific Serial to USB drivers and I kept having the same problem I was beginning to think my receiver had a problem but when I put it on my test Laptop running the 32 bit version of Windows 7 it worked fine.
Last night I tried to visit the Globalsat US website to download the drivers again thinking that I may have corrupted something and lo and behold their website states in bold red print that the BU-353 W(weatherproof) is incompatible with Windows 8. Even their comparison of the two devices on their site states that it does not.
Seeing as how I know a lot of us on these forums use this receiver, I thought I'd mention it for those who are planning on upgrading to Windows 8 or buying this specific receiver for their CarPC running windows 8.

Hi,
I have this USB GPS: http://store.mp3car.com/BU_353_USB_G..._p/gps-002.htm

I am trying to make it work with Centrafuse auto 3.5, I am running windows 7.

under windows if I use the GPUINFO application, it does receive data but after a few minutes, it still says "no fix". I don't know if that's normal or not.

Under CF3.5 I select the right port in the settings, and set bit rate to 4800 bps.

but I am not sure if I need to set it to SIRF or NMEA? I tried both and none is giving me a position.

I used CF before (before I sold my infill G4 a few years back) and I had no problem with the built-in GPS. I just don't know what's the problem here. Any idea?

Not sure where the issue lies, but I am not getting a lock with the receiver. I have the GPS on com 6 and xport sees it and passes it to COM 7 and 8. RR uses COM 7 and iG uses 8. Xport says low signal in the bottom toolbar. So it seems to me that the GPS is functioning but not getting a lock. I have the GPS unit under my passenger seat on my motorcycle. so there is a 1/8 in plastic piece and 2" of foam padding between the gps and the sky. Does it REALLY need to have a clear view of the sky? or is there something fundamental I am missing?

Ok, complete re-do of set-up, fast forward 4 months later...finally get back to install, everything but this works.

It's powered, I can see the red light on it flash every couple seconds, so the USB connection is there. BUT, there is no "prolific...." device showing in the manager. No port hub as per the old problem it had, nothing..

I do not see it in the device manager at all. I've run the globalsat utility to find it, every comm port is "no device". And yes, only 2 comm devices are showing, and accounted for, touch interface on comm1, and the odblink serial-to-usb driver on comm3.

This thing toast, or is there something else I can try, do, or look up that I've not tried? Ideas?

EDIT: Ya, it's le fubar. Likely pinched/broke a wire at some point with the door inside it, not seen by the PC at all connecting it and disconnecting it on different usb ports. Could fix it, but for $35...not worth it. Time for a new one.

I have used a BU-353 for a long time... I took my pc out of my car for about a year, sold the car and left the 353 in there by accident. I got a new one and put n in my car a few days ago. The problem is that I cannot get this unit to keep the needed 38400 baud rate. The lag at 4800 is ridiculous and sirfdemo is only giving me a temporary solution - it will last for a day, but as son as I start the car in the morning, it's back to 4800.

How do I make the change a bit more permanent?

Windows 7 recognized it as a device and i did install the drivers it comes with. After that i installed a program which is included in the dvd in the bu-353 package which is called gps information, and this helps you search the gps's com! Ok i found that my unit is in COM8. Centrafuse does recognize it and its port. i setup properly the navigation settings in cf, but it doesnt seem to lock to any satelites... I dont know how to see if it's working or not, and a plugin called GPSEngine doesnt show up in the settings menu so i cannot open it :(

I'm using BU-353 with IGO8 in my carpc. O/S:XP ProI tested Garmin and IGO. You know have a GPS Data screen in IGO8. I can see how many satellite signal in this screen. Dots means satellites. Red ones very weak, green ones is ok. Usually very weak signal. A lot red dots. Sometimes turns to green. But max green dot is 3 or 4. My cell phone is HTC Touch Pro and has GPS. I tried with HTC and PC at the same time and same place. Both IGO.HTC shows 7 green satellite but PC shows 3. Also 3 greens decreasing 2 in PC. Whats problem?
I have to say something. My car pc has 8 USB ports. 4 ports rear and 4 ports on mainboard. So i plugged BU-353 to on board USB port. I mean that using like a additional cable around 20 cm. is this problem? Or its not original BU-353? I bought it from China seller.

So I recently installed a fresh copy of Win 7 64bit and for some reason my BU-353 keeps showing up as a "Generic USB Hub". It used to work before and I cannot figure out why it's not working. I've installed the drivers and uninstalled them many times. When I plug the GPS into the motherboard, the computer doesn't recognize it as a COM device and doesn't assign it a com port. The device is listed as a Generic USB Hub. I have no clue.

I've had an error in Centrafuse [CF] for a while now I can't see to resolve, I'm hoping you guys can help me.

my GPS Unit [BU-353] seems to function properly - only after a reboot, never after a return from hibernation.
Xport will pick it up a majority of the time, and I can assign it another port, which I hook CF into [com port 5, from 3, for this example], but that won't transfer the data into CF.

The only time Xport will trasnfer the data, is for about 3 seconds after I click the "Find GPS" button on xport, and it seems, while its scanning for the com ports, CF will be updating, then quickly drop and no longer work. The only times I've actually gotten the GPS to stick in CF, is after a reboot, and than not using xport at all.

im on an XP system, and the GPS has a direct line of sight into the sky. Latest drivers as well. and its not on a hub Any ideas on what to do?

I feel as though it's not a CF problem but something in the drivers or something else within XP that is killing the data transfer. Thanks everyone!

I have my system running CF3.1 with GMPC (it did the same with Destinator) and park in an underground garage (work or home), where it hibernates. When I resume, most of the time it either never gets enough satellites and locks or it takes a long time (at least 10 minutes), even if I get out of the garage before it finishes resuming. I'm guessing this issue has to do more with the state of the GPS when I hibernate the PC after entering the garage. It seems like this could be fixed possibly by a disable/enable of the GPS driver just like Xport does when it resumes. I have Xport running and this still occurs and the Xport GUI reports "Low signal". I have a GPS log from this morning when this occurred and can post it, but it doesn't look very helpful.

Anybody have the same problem? Ideas?

I have a little usb mouse for right clicking, which I haven't figured out either. But when I try to install the GPS ( I have some prolific driver installed presumably the most recent) the mouse starts clicking and moving like crazy. It will open things and maybe delete something if its lucky. windows 7 pops up a notification about the usb mouse being installed (it was previously working) and all goes back to normal when I unplug the bu-353. Whats up with this? :noidea: ( i havent even tried to plug in my powermate yet) but ideally i'd like them all working together.

I have a strange issue with my BU-353 GPS receiver inconsistently locking on to satellites. The GPS receiver is on top of my dash in clear view of open sky and there areno tall buildings around etc.

First off, a brief history: I've been using the BU-353 in my car PC for a few years now and it had been working fine. Then one day it just died and would no longer power on.

A couple weeks ago I purchased a new GPS receiver and everything worked fine the first time I installed it. However, after a couple days I noticed the GPS receiver would no longer lock on any satellites (the red light would not blink). I eventually exchanged the GPS receiver for a new one since it was within 30 days.

I received a new GPS receiver yesterday and again it worked fine the first time I installed it in my car (locked on to multiple satellites within 30 seconds). This morning when I got in my car I noticed the GPS receiver would not lock on to any satellites, no matter how many times I unplugged and plugged it back in.

Here is the strange thing; if I bring my laptop into my car and plug the GPS receiver into the laptop it works fine and locks on to satellites. It also works if I then unplug it from my laptop and back into my car PC, but only the first time. After a restart the GPS receiver no longer locks on to any satellites. I can also bring the GPS receiver indoors and use it on any of my computers and it still works fine even after restarting the computer.

Any ideas what could be causing this problem in my car PC?

i had centrafuse booting up fully with audio playing (from hibernation) in about 7 or 8 seconds. until now. I just installed my gps, which is running perfectly so far without the aid of xport or anything else. I'm running it with all the default settings, and it seems to allocate com5 every time.
My problem is that the time to boot takes about the same, and the music will start to play. however, the screen freezes and the touchscreen fails to operate for about a minute or more until you hear the "usb device chime", at which point the screen un-freezes and the system is fully functional again.
before the gps, during bootup from hibernation, you would hear the music begin, and then seconds later the usb chime would sound and the touchscreen would then function.
is there a way to set the touchscreen driver to load first, and then the gps. I rarely use the gps, and obviously touchscreen functionality is more of a priority.

To people who don't know how to use sirfdemo, PLEASE DONT HELP ME AS YOU YOURSELF WILL SCREW UP YOUR GPS, I know what I am doing :)

I need a copy of the almanac and Ephemeris file from another BU-353 host

!!!!DO NOT CLICK ANY MENU OPTIONS IF YOU DONT KNOW WHAT YOUR DOING!!!!

Steps to be done:
1) download latest surfdemo (attached to this post)
2) when you open it, you get the connection screen, choose your com port and baud rate 4800.
3) From Action Menu, you should see Open Data Source, the GPS data will start appearing.
4) You need to switch to Sirf mode to download the almanac and ephemeris data from the BU-353 (which mine is corrupt is why i need a copy). So from Action menu again, select Switch to Surf Protocol, NMEA window will stop scrolling, and the Sirf binary window data will start running.
5) Goto Poll menu, then select Almanac, and save the file. Do that for Ephemeris also.
6) please host those files here....
7) Don't forget to switch back to NMEA from Action menu, "Switch to NMEA Protocol" select baud 4800 from the drop list, then SEND.
8) you may close surfdemo :)

All done!
Please get me those 2 files i want to try to ressurect my BU-353 heheheh

I have a BU 353 hooked up to an intel mobo (dual core atom) blah blah blah. I have been able to use the gps many times but the lock on time from when i start my computer is much worse than advertised no matter how clear my signal may be. It takes me about 5-10 minutes to get a lock on even though it displays that I have at least 3 SVs locked on.

I am in NMEA with baud rate of 4800 on a low com port (3).

I have used sirfdemo and others and it seems that the only baud rate that centrafuse will allow me to use is 4800 even though i do get it to :roll:work at 57600 in sirfdemo and the likes.

running xp SP2 with centrafuse trial version.

where does everyone place their gps unit because I will keep mine in my glove box and it seems to work fine once its locked on but sometimes (once every hour) it will think that i got off the freeway and deviate about 1/4 mile in some random direction till it finally brings me back to my route.

Any thoughts or ideas would really help!!

Thanks

Using BU-353 GPS USB reciever plugged directly into Intel D945GLF2 MB, Roadrunner, Xport, iGuidance.

Receiver works great, always has except that hours into a drive it will randomly cut out.
The "GPS" icon in my RR skin will disappear and iGuidance will lose its location. Occasionally the GPS icon in RR comes back, but shortly back off. The GPS info screen in iGuidance shows no coordinates and all the satellites are greyed out instead of being green as they usually are. I typically get 8-9 satellites, no problem.

The puck is located underneath my dash which is plastic. It has a clear view of the sky through my windshield. I do not have any tint on my windshield. This is in a WRX so I can remove the clock in the dash easily to expose the GPS, this eliminates the possiblity of the plastic dash causing interference, unfortunately this does not help. It shouldn't anyway since I have proven the GPS has no problem getting a fix on multiple satellites with it in place.
Restarting the system brings it back to normal.
Note this occurs with a clear view of the sky on an interstate. It's not as if I'm covered by trees or in a canyon. I have experience with GPS units and they typically don't lose signal in these conditions.
Opening xport shows it's still communicating data, although I can't confirm there is anything useful in it.
I suspect a faulty GPS unit (it's only 3 weeks old) or some OS related issue, or possibly xport not forwarding properly.
I can't consistently reproduce the problem.
I am not connected through a GPS hub, it's directly connected to the USB terminal on the back of the motherboard.
This is not a resume from hibernate/standby/startup problem, never had those problems, I am literally losing the GPS randomly hours into using it.
I've searched through the threads, but all I could find were issues with initial setup, I've already cleared those hurdles.

Any ideas?
Ready to just return the unit.
Any suggestions for a more reliable GPS?

Thanks.

I live out in West Texas where the temperatures are recently coming up to about 105 deg F. I have a BU-353 mounted inside of my car on the window and the older GR-213 mounted on the roof. The BU-353 was a replacement for the GR-213 which has become unreliable. I've noticed that in the heat, the GPS received doesn't seem to come back online. Ordinarily it has no problem with resume from hibernate, so I don't think hibernation is the issue. Rebooting has no effect. The only way to get it back online is to unplug it from the USB port then plugging it back in after 10 seconds or so. So should I expect heat to kill these GPS receivers?

Are there any GPS receivers that have the SiRF chipset which will not die in this kind of environment?

Hi all...

My bu-353 used to detect when i used it on my desktop computer, then at some point it stopped. now when trying it on my carputer and my laptop, GPSinfo cannot detect it.
ive got it set to 4800, 8,n,1,n

it just says 'com4: no gps receiver'

this is the output i get:
Ó¦:3S›d.t"|zÑ2¼Ê3
r32`>I

just gibberish... i dunno whats wrong!!!
i've tried updating the prolific drivers, and nothing seems to help. different usb ports, no hub, etc.

there isnt a light on, but the computer itself detects it and installs the prolific driver and its assigned to com4. i vaguely remember this happening to me before, but it was some time ago.

i'm in my garage, do i need to try it outside maybe? i did for a minute or so and nothing, but should i give it more time?

sirfdemo also didnt work. any advice would be great!! thanks all.

Hey guys,

So I got sick of connecting my bluetooth holux GPS reciever every time I wanted to use it and bought the highly reccomended BU-353 instead.

However, with the gps puck sitting still, the thing refuses to give me a signal I can use; all of the readings jump around all over the place; direction is the worst one but lat/long and speed keep changing aswell.

Have tried putting the unit in various places, is now sitting outside with a clear view of the sky with no cloud cover with a lock on 8 satellites but it's still jumping around.

I've tried playing around with all of the settings; buffer, parity, baud rate, sirf/nmea, etc. but nothing seems to help.

Can anyone point me in any direction pleeeeease!

Cheers for any help.

Im looking at very soon getting a BU-353 Gps reciever. I just wanted to se if anyone haused a usb extension cable with this? does it work. Id like to remote mount this on the top of my car but in order to get to my labtop then 5m isnt going to be nearly long enough. Also will it work fine from a powered USB hub or does it need to be plugged directly into its own port/ I am also wondering about software for offroad use. I would like to use this reciver for fiding my way on a trip but i usually go off roading and am planning to start getting to longer distance buggy racing where a gps is very handy to see where your going when the road looks like everything else. I know that there are specific systems you can buy for this but i was wondering if there was anything i could use.
Thanks in advanced for the help.

Im from Finland and i have a biiiig bada** problem. I installed newest drivers for my BU-353 and everything seemed to work great. The GPSInfo tool shows graphs and bla bla bla... But when i look at the connection side it shows "No Fix" and doesnt even get the date/time right. The Date/Time changes from time to time (resets back and forth).

I have now tried with different OS's and different computers the GPS and none seems to work correctly. I have all the setting correctly and still i get "No Fix".

I have tried blacing it on top of the car and let it stay in all possible positions for at least an hour and still nothing.

The led indicator stays "Red". No blinking. It did blink a little once and once it showed a few satellites too. And then i didnt even touch anything... Just purely random.

Im totally out of clue here. I think its done for and i need to send it for warranty???
I'm getting slow response from the gps directions. Sometimes it will refresh every four or five minutes. Could it be because I have the receiver mounted upside down? I looks like a hockey puck with one rounded side and one flat side. I mounted it with the flat side against the windshield, so I'm wondering if it matters which way you mount it.

I have a bu-353 on my vehicle and it has been working fine though I only use it maybe once a month or so. Thats as often as I need gps nav. Anyway, I went to use it yesterday and my iGuidance won't pick up the GPS. So I did some digging and found that XPort had stopped working because a new version is available. Anyway, I got the new version of XPort in place but I can't get anything to recognize the GPS on any port. I found a driver called PL-2303 installed that handles the translation from USB to serial. How does one configure it? How do I tell it which com port to output to? I even un-installed it and reinstalled but it never asked which port to output to. I tried using the GPS utility that comes with the bu-353 to detect GPS receivers but it doesn't find a GPS on any port. It only shows com1 and com2 available. I think the bu-353 is still working because the red light is blinking on the puck. Any ideas?

Hello, Currently having a bit of a problem waking my mini from hibernation when the BU-353 GPS is attached. Also prevents mini from waking from standby.

both these modes work perfectly when the GPS mouse is not attached.

Mac Mini is formatted and running only windows XPsp2 with os x bootcamp drivers.

I've been trying to get into the bios to see what the machine is trying to boot with little success. I understand these new boards use EFI Bios? what key can i use to access these settings?

Hello. I am running iGuidance 3.0.1 with a BU-353. The lag is around 5 seconds, meaning I pass a street and 5 seconds later my GPS shows me passing the street. I have read that if reset the GPS using Sirfdemo then it fixes the lag. When I run Sirfdemo I am unable to switch to "sirf signal" therefore unable to do anything. I have tried switching around the bps but it will only work on the 4800. Is anyone familiar with this? If it helps I am running XP Pro. Thanks.

hi guys!

i was wondering if anyone would be nice enough to send me the drivers for the globalsat BU 353 gps unit?

i've tried downloading it from their site, but i think the files are mixed up? because when i download it then install it the program says 2303 not the 353. and it won't detect my GPS unit!

anyone help? i've been searching all over the forums for a secondary link for the drivers but can't find one!
