Hello all.

Back in 2006 I made this for my '97 Mazda Miata:
http://youtu.be/Swu0sE2AJYg?t=2s
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yWQnKbE4Y-I

That car was totalled by a rear-end about a year into having that setup.
Several years later (I'm 23 now) and I can afford a new car with an in-dash. I impulsively leased a Ford Focus last week; sold on the fact that they're the only company to provide API hooks.

I am just wondering what folks like us that had the best setups back in the day are doing now with these new cars with the pre-existing in-dash systems like the SYNC.

Some of the things I've noticed that bug me are the slow response time from tapping the screen to the screen actually changing or acting; my old Lilliput with Windows XP & Road Runner was highly responsive compared to the SYNC system.

It's pretty shameful that a brand new car in 2013 still can't match up with our hacks back in 2006. I guess am just starting to feel doubtful that a pre-existing in dash was a good idea and that I should have probably got an old car again like my Miata and built another fully custom system. At the same time, in terms of mechanics and such, I preferred to have a brand new car.

Thanks,

Hello all-

I work for GoodSync, a data synchronization software company. We support Windows, Mac, iOS, and Android operating systems, which seem to be present in many of your custom audio solutions.

I joined this forum to gather some useful information on how the community is using and backing up its files- media, programs, any extension. Are playlists and directories stored only on the hard drive in your vehicles? Do you use freeware programs to sync to the cloud?

We currently have an integration solution developed that automatically syncs certain folders or file extensions (*.mp3, *.m4a, etc) to a home server whenever the car's computer detects a WiFi signal. Data can go 2 ways- either you add new material to your car's HDD which syncs to your home PC, or you download new files at home which instantly sync to your car's HDD- wherever it is.

How do you currently manage data synchronization?

Thank you so much!

Hey guys,
I just read an article about the so called "Project Detroit" which is about a Windows 8 System in a Ford Mustang.
Even though it might be just a merchandising-coup of Microsoft, it still was a great job by Westcoast Customs.
showing what is already possible in CarInfotainment, it might give us some new ideas for our Setups.

Qualcomm Atheros has already introduced a standard called Wi-fi direct which allows two devices to establish a wifi connection without a router. On top of that only one of the devices has to be wifi-direct enabled. At CES they announced wi-fi display which allows for one display to be mirrored to another over this wifi direct connection. It's like bluetooth but wayyy faster (should replace bluetooth altogether)

Wi-Fi Display is an industry standard devised by members of the Wi-Fi Alliance that enables sharing of the screen image or audio content of one device simultaneously on another nearby device, including simple and secure device discovery and pairing. For example, the Web page appearing on a computer screen can be shared on the screen of a nearby enabled TV. A typical use case could enable content on one smartphone screen to be shared with a nearby media tablet.

Read more here: http://www.sync-blog.com/sync/2012/0...mirroring.html

http://androidandme.com/2012/01/news...ruments-omap4/

my thinking is this android tablet in dash, and phone in your pocket. You could send your phone screen over the connection to the monitor, then using a simple bluetooth app (or wifi direct app) make it so that input on your tablet is sent to the phone (kind of like an external mouse). I think this is so simple and perfect. Sounds like bad news for the mimics team though.

Oh and just to let you know how close I think it really is (but what do i know); The google nexus is equiped with wifi-direct. And as I mentioned before, only one of the 2 paired devices need to be wifi-direct enabled.

Let me know what you think

DashCommand for Windows, Android and iOS has been around for a while, but the most recent update for the iPhone allows you to view all the OBD-II-sourced data directly on your Pioneer AppRadio.

As we've said before, the real draw of the AppRadio isn't just its 6.1-inch, capacitive multi-touch screen, it's the ability for third parties to integrate their apps into the display. In the case of DashCommand, you can port over 229 different data points through your iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch using an OBDII connector. A maximum of 27 customizable gauges show you everything from coolant temps to check engine lights, and using the built-in accelerometer and GPS systems, you can also display an inclinometer, G-forces and even race track mapping. Get all the details in at DashCommand's site.

This is very good news, I have been running a developers copy of W8 with no dual boot to another OS and really like it. I have had no significant issues and was concerned I would have to reinstall XP if the Beta was not released prior to the March 8 time bomb on this copy.
I am not a MS fanboy but I have to say I will be in line to buy a copy of W8 when released. My daughter is waiting until it is out to replace her Vista laptop.

OPen Source Apps within an MS OS should be interesting.
Article copied below or source link here: http://windows8beta.com/2011/12/wind...en-source-apps if you prefer to get it from the horses mouth :)

"Windows 8 Store Welcomes Open Source Apps !

Posted by sagaron December 10, 2011

Microsoft Windows operating system has been the most popular system operating system in terms of global market share with the current one i.e Windows 7 being the most popular one with over 500 million licenses and counting. The successor to Windows 7 i.e Windows 8 is being designed and near to a beta release in the month of February 2012 which will also see the release of Windows 8 Store for the Metro based apps.

Last week Microsoft previewed the Windows 8 Store and along with that also opened a new contest for the developers who want their apps to be featured first when the Store is released in a couple of months time,at the time of release there will be only free apps available over the store.

Those who thought that Microsoft won’t allow open source apps to the platform, well Microsoft thinks otherwise. As spotted earlier by TheRegister in the Windows 8 Store’s Developer’s agreement Microsoft will allow developers to develop their apps using any open source licenses as long as it’s been approved by the OSI(Open Source Initiative).

Here’s what the Agreement read:

“Your license terms must also not conflict with the Standard Application License Terms, in any way, except if you include FOSS, your license terms may conflict with the limitations set forth in Section 3 of those Terms, but only to the extent required by the FOSS that you use. ‘FOSS’ means any software licensed under an Open Source Initiative Approved License.”

“If your app includes FOSS, it must not cause any non-FOSS Microsoft software to become subject to the terms of any FOSS license.”

According to The Register Microsoft indirectly denied any support for the GPL(General Public License). So it would be interesting to see if this open source love lure the open source developers to take interest in the Windows 8 Store app development.
It's called the Cadillac User Experience, or CUE, — and it doesn't just take a step forward, it looks like it might leap-frog the entire luxury infotainment marketplace.

The main interface area for CUE is an 8-inch LCD touch screen, seamlessly — and gorgeously — integrated into the top of the central instrument panel above a motorized fully capacitive faceplate that looks eerily similar to the Vertu Signature cell phone.

We're told that the screen uses proximity sensing, so as your hand approaches the LCD screen, command icons appear as if by magic — icons can be customized and arranged any way you see fit — all by iOS-like drag-and-drop.

Not only is the screen able to sense your hand, but your hand will sense the screen. The buttons on the fully capacitive faceplate pulse when pressed. Yes, that's right — haptic feedback, baby.

The screen's also multi-touch hand gesture-enabled — just like an iPhone or iPad.

But that's not the only screen — there's also a 12.3-inch LCD reconfigurable gauge cluster — just like the one found on the Chevy Volt, only infinitely cooler and darker-looking.

The entire system runs on an ARM 11 3-core processor — offering, as GM says, "3.5 times more processing power than current infotainment systems."
The transitions are amazing. Definitely GPU accelerated. That is something we should be investing on around here. Hopefully OM or RR will deliver that, and my bet is, CF would be the last one in that race, if even competes. They should, I'm not sure what OEM vendor would chose CF over this...

LG Electronics Debuts Car Audio Systems with Smartphone Connectivity

Thursday, September 29, 2011 -- Seoul, Korea – LG Electronics has launched the world’s first car audio systems with smart mobile connectivity. The catch is that these systems will not be available in the U.S. as LG is only shipping them in Europe, in Europe, South America, Central America and Mexico, Middle East and Africa, a LG spokesperson told Mobile Electronics.

The system, LCF810 and LCS710, come with a smartphone remote control app that allows passengers to control every element of the audio anywhere in the car without the driver’s assistance. The Bluetooth-enabled smartphone app, LG Car Audio WiCS (Wireless Control & Sync), works on both iOS- and Android-powered smartphones.

The LCF810 and the LCS710 are similar with the exception of being the LCD display on the LCF810 being a 3-line display, whereas the LCS710 has a 2-line display. Both systems can play MP3 and WMA audio files stored in CDs, USB flash memory drives, SD cards, external hard drives and iPhones or iPods. In addition, for consumers in Europe, FM radio is accompanied by Digital Audio Broadcasting+ (DAB+) with customizable program-type (PTY) preferences.

Based on LG’s own WiCS technology, LG Car Audio WiCS enables passengers to access and control in detail all aforementioned media storage devices and radio broadcasts from anywhere in the car. The smartphone app can enable, among others, content selection, preset management, play/stop/pause, volume control, and editing and creation of playlists. All these media files and radio contents can be recorded onto a USB drive and the process managed entirely via LG Car Audio WiCS. In addition, the smartphone app allows users to adjust the equalizer, subwoofer frequency, the brightness of the backlit LCD display and the recording speed of the USB drive.

The introduction of WiCS technology to car audio comes in the midst of LG's overall efforts to enhance the mobile connectivity and smart features of its electronics devices, including display, audio, computer and home appliance products. Car audio was no exception.

"At LG, we strive for innovation," said Mr. K. W. Kim, President, LG Electronics, Middle East and Africa. "Through the LCF810 and the LCS710, we wanted to offer consumers the most advanced and the most convenient car audio systems by making the WiCS technology a part of the driving experience."

Mr. K. W. Kim added, "The LCF810 and the LCS710, along with WiCS, merely constitute the baseline version of what we have in mind to synergize car audio with smart mobile connectivity. At LG, we certainly have many technologies and experiences under our belts to further fuel this development and steer car audio systems in innovative directions and toward new heights.”

Location-based deals app wins on Ford Sync

By: Wayne Cunningham September 16, 2011 4:38 PM PDT

A new company developing location-based coupon systems won Ford's contest to integrate an app with Sync at the TechCrunch Disrupt Hackathon. Developers from Roximity spent last weekend adapting their app to use Sync's voice command and display capabilities, making its service available in thecar. Ford announced the winner of its contest this week.

Roximity is currently operating under the radar, with only a coming soon sign on its Web site. The company will offer coupons based on a user's location, through either a smartphone app or, as the Ford development indicates, a car.

Roximity's system could offer you a deal on a Frappuccino as you walk by a Starbucks, for example. Or, with Sync, offer a discounted car wash as you approach a service station.

This type of integration between a car and its immediate surroundings has previously been considered by developers working on vehicle to infrastructure communications, although that initiative currently focuses on driver safety technologies.

As a tangible prize, Ford will bring the Roximity developers toCES next January to show off the app integration.
.

Reading through the announcements from Google today, it seems like there is a lot of support for Android hardware and connections. Some links are:

The Android Open Accessory Development Kit, which adds support for "external USB hardware (i.e. an Android USB accessory) to interact with an Android-powered device in a special "accessory" mode".

Basically it's USB host mode in Android 3.1.

Android@Home, which allows a standard way for apps to discover and communicate with each other across devices. Of course they are saying that your phone will now be able to tell your washing machine when to run, but who says that your car isn't another device?

Source: http://www.autoblog.com/2011/04/19/i...ink-buick-gmc/

As expected, General Motors will begin rolling out MyLink later this year, and GM has expanded
the connectivity system to include the 2012 Buick Verano, Regal and LaCrosse, along with the 2012 GMC Terrain.

GM has changed the branding of its SYNC competitor to IntelliLink for Buick and GMC models, although the features and functionality remain the same.

Voice commands – powered by Nuance technology – allow users to control phone functionality, radio stations and MP3 players through a natural language system, while Gracenote pulls in track listings and album art, Pandora, Stitcher and XM stream the tunes, and a standard rear-vision camera (on the Terrain) lets you keep tabs on what's coming up from behind.

Better iPhone and Android integration through a combination of USB and Bluetooth control is part of the package, and buyers of the youth-focused Verano will get IntelliLink as standard at first, with the system coming to the Regal and LaCrosse later this year. However, Enclave buyers will have to wait for its refreshening in 2013 before getting their hands on the system. Full details on both the Buick and GMC integration in the press release after the break.

Buick IntelliLink Coming to 2012 Regal, LaCrosse and Verano

Hands-free, voice-controlled interface helps drivers safely use mobile electronics

NEW YORK – Buick, the fastest-growing major automotive brand in the United States in 2010, will bring a higher level of in-vehicle wireless connectivity and customizable infotainment options to its 2012 Verano, Regal and LaCrosse models. The upgraded capability will enhance the luxury vehicle experience that Buick buyers have come to know and love.

Buick IntelliLink uses Bluetooth or USB to connect the driver's smartphone to a new 7- or 8-inch, high-resolution, full-color touch screen display radio. IntelliLink expands on Buick's current Bluetooth and USB capabilities to allow smartphone control via voice activation and steering wheel-mounted controls. It also enables streaming stereo audio from the phone through services like PANDORA® Internet radio and Stitcher SmartRadio®.

Most importantly, Buick IntelliLink enables seamless integration of stowed portable devices with each vehicle's infotainment system, allowing drivers to keep their hands on the wheel and eyes on the road.

"Today's tech-savvy consumers expect more from their cars' infotainment systems," said Tony DiSalle, U.S. vice president of Buick Marketing. "They want a system that allows them to customize their in-vehicle experience with smartphones and other portable media devices. The availability of IntelliLink on every Buick sedan in 2012 and every Buick model in 2013 takes connectivity and media personalization to a new level."

Consumer interest in onboard connectivity is rising with smartphone sales. Apple sold 16.2 million iPhones in the fourth quarter of 2010, and Android sales jumped 886 percent from 2009 to 2010. By the end of 2013, there will be 1.1 billion smartphones with annual sales of 300 million units, according to the research firm Parks Associates Industries.

"About 70 percent of all new car buyers want some form of connectivity," said Micky Bly, executive director leading GM's infotainment engineering efforts, citing GM research. "Whether it's because they want to listen to their favorite music or explore local restaurants on a Friday night, today's car buyer expects so much more out of their time in a car."

One doesn't need a smartphone to benefit from IntelliLink. The system works with a Bluetooth-enabled cell phone, USB flash drive or digital audio player. Even without a mobile device, Buick owners will benefit from IntelliLink's enhanced voice recognition technology and OnStar's on-screen turn-by-turn directions.

IntelliLink's voice activation capability benefits from Buick's library-quiet interiors. Quiet Tuning systems, processes and components are built into every facet of the vehicle's architecture to block or absorb sound and dampen or eliminate vibrations. Quiet Tuning also calls attention to the audio fidelity of Buick's Bose® and harmon/kardon® sound systems.

Additional benefits provided by IntelliLink include:

Enhanced hands-free voice control system powered by Nuance®, which allows simple voice commands to initiate phone calls and select radio stations or media from portable MP3 players and smartphones. A tap of a button on the steering wheel enables intuitive verbal control of many radio features like "play (artist name)" or "call (name of contact)". When a smart phone is connected you can say "tune (Internet radio, station name)."

PANDORA Internet radio and Stitcher SmartRadio allow users to create personalized radio stations based on favorite artists or genres and enables access to thousands of audio programming choices, allowing customers to build a personalized listening experience. IntelliLink integrates control of both of these apps for a driver-directed listening experience.

Gracenote® identifies the music collection on the driver's USB device, MP3 player or smartphone and presents information such as artist name, genres and album cover art on the IntelliLink screen and enables users to select similar music to the tunes they love. Gracenote also improves the accuracy of IntelliLink's voice activation system by allowing users to access music using artist nicknames, such as "The Boss," "The Stones," or "Snoop" using IntelliLink's voice control interfaces activated through the touch-screen or steering wheel buttons.

Upgraded USB connectivity adds the ability to play music files directly from flash memory devices and gives the customer the ability to update IntelliLink with future feature enhancements.

Buick IntelliLink's designers drew inspiration from the intuitive, easy-to-use interfaces found on many popular consumer electronics. The influence can be seen on the home page with application icons that animate when activated. The touch screen's fluid, contemporary graphics and elegant color palette evoke Buick's "inviting luxury" aesthetic and advance the sophisticated design language established in the current LaCrosse's navigation system.

The debut of Buick IntelliLink extends the OnStar experience from safety and security to information and entertainment by seamlessly integrating the capability of a smartphone into the vehicle so that hand-held phones may be safely stowed while driving.

When OnStar debuted in 1996, it pioneered in-vehicle connectivity with the auto industry's first embedded telematics system. It has grown from primarily offering automatic crash notification and security features to include remote vehicle diagnostics, turn-by-turn navigation and the ability to slow down stolen vehicles. In November 2010, OnStar released a smartphone application for all 2011 Buick vehicles that incorporated remote start, lock/unlock, and vehicle status checks.

GMC IntelliLink Enhances Terrain's Connectivity Capability

Small SUV's voice-controlled interface helps drivers safely use mobile electronics

NEW YORK – GMC, the brand known for professional grade capability and engineering excellence, is taking in-vehicle connectivity to the next level on the 2012 Terrain. The small SUV with segment-leading fuel economy will expand its already-extensive list of standard and available features in late 2011 with a simple-to-use, customizable infotainment system and expanded wireless capability.

The 2012 Terrain will be the first vehicle to offer GMC IntelliLink, which uses Bluetooth or USB to connect the driver's smartphone to Terrain's new seven-inch, high-resolution, full-color touch screen display radio. IntelliLink expands on the current Terrain's Bluetooth and USB capabilities to allow smartphone control via voice activation and steering wheel-mounted controls, and streaming stereo audio from the phone through services like PANDORA® internet radio and Stitcher SmartRadio®.

Most importantly, IntelliLink enables seamless integration of stowed portable devices with Terrain's infotainment system, allowing drivers to keep their hands on the wheel and eyes on the road.

"Today's car buyers don't want to settle for mass market radio, and they don't have to," said John Schwegman, U.S. vice president of GMC Marketing. "They expect to have access to personalized media wherever they are, and the introduction of GMC IntelliLink on Terrain makes media personalization easier than ever."

Consumer interest in onboard connectivity is rising with smartphone sales. Apple sold 16.2 million iPhones in the fourth quarter of 2010, and Android sales jumped 886 percent from 2009 to 2010. Two and a half years ago, only one in 10 Americans had a smartphone. By the end of 2013, there will be 1.1 billion smartphones, with annual sales of 300 million units, according to research firm Parks Associates Industries.

"About 70 percent of all new car buyers want some form of connectivity," said Micky Bly, executive director leading GM's infotainment engineering efforts, citing GM research. "Whether it's because they want to listen to their favorite music or hear movie times on the way to the theater, today's car buyer expects so much more out of their time in a car."

One doesn't need a smartphone to benefit from IntelliLink. The system works with a Bluetooth-enabled cell phone, USB flash drive or digital audio player. Even without a mobile device, GMC owners will benefit from IntelliLink's enhanced voice recognition technology and OnStar's on-screen turn-by-turn directions.

The new benefits provided by GMC IntelliLink include:

Enhanced hands-free voice control system powered by Nuance®, which allows simple voice commands to initiate phone calls and select radio stations or media from portable MP3 players and smartphones. A tap of a button on the steering wheel enables intuitive verbal control of many radio features like "play (artist name)" or "call (name of contact)".
Upgraded USB connectivity adds the ability to play music files directly from flash memory devices, and gives the customer the ability to update IntelliLink with future feature enhancements.

GMC IntelliLink retains all the capabilities of today's entertainment units, and adds to Terrain's comprehensive list of standard and available features, which includes purposeful technologies such as:

Standard rear-vision camera that provides a view of objects or people directly behind the vehicle

Standard USB audio connectivity and MP3 playback for your portable music player – plug it in and control the features right from the radio or the optional steering wheel controls and USB thumb drives or (say USB enabled storage devices)

Standard XM Satellite Radio, which provides coast-to-coast tunes

Programmable power liftgate that can be set to open to a lower height, clearing garage obstructions or making it easier to reach for those of shorter stature

Remote vehicle start that can be used to automatically heat up a cold Terrain on a January morning, or cool it down on a hot August afternoon.

GMC IntelliLink's designers drew inspiration from the intuitive, easy-to-use interfaces found on many popular consumer electronics. The influence can be seen on the home page with application icons that animate when activated. The touch screen's structured, technical graphics and red-and-grey color combination evoke GMC's "professional grade" personality and Terrain's bold exterior styling.

Of all the features of the Tesla Model S, the 17-inch touchscreen has us frothing at the mouth. And according to Elon Musk, Tesla will allow third-party developers to create apps for their all-electric sedan.

Speaking at the Cleantech Forum in San Francisco, Musk said, "We want people to develop car-specific applications," with Tesla's CEO specifically citing that text-to-speech technology is key to reducing distracted driving.

We'll be sitting down with several Model S engineers tomorrow and plan to ask what kind of apps the automaker will have pre-installed in their new EV, what they're looking for from devs and when an SDK could be available. Expect a follow-up soon.
OE Styled Multimedia / Nav Systems Now Shipping

Thursday, March 10, 2011 -- HAUPPAUGE, NY – MARCH 8, 2011 – Audiovox Corporation (NASDAQ: VOXX) today announced that 8 new models of their OE Sound Solution systems are now shipping to expeditors and new car dealers. These replacement infotainment centers are feature rich giving the customer the high quality options they want without the additional cost of unwanted vehicle packages.

“These new infotainment systems expand on the Company’s existing OE replacement radio line and add head units compatible with multiple VW and GM models, Honda, Hyundai, and Toyota,” said Tom Malone, President of Audiovox Electronics. “These radios provide the car dealer viable alternatives to factory installed systems and deliver increased profit opportunities. For the consumer, they eliminate the need to buy an accessory package that might include unwanted options when all they really want is the radio upgrade….and the cost of the radio upgrade can be included in the vehicle’s monthly payments. In addition, these heads unit also come with a 3-year warranty so it is a win all around for both the dealer and the consumer.”

Where many competitive OE styled solutions offer limited capabilities, the new Advent products come with some of the most sought after consumer features like built-in Navigation with Navteq US/Canada maps, turn-by-turn voice guidance in 19 languages, 11 million POIs with 3D Screens. There is also built-in Parrot Bluetooth with external microphone, hi-res touch screen displays (7” and 8” depending on model), Made for iPhone and iPod, XM –ready, rear-view camera with “Instant-on” technology as well as MediaLink interface modules with USB input that also allows video from an iPod or iPhone (optional cable required) and a 3-year warranty.

Malone concluded. “The new car market in the US appears to be turning the corner and all industry estimates point to continued improvements. Consumer demand is crystal clear. Car owners want connectivity. They've invested billions in personal media devices and other electronic technologies and gadgetry, and they want it all to connect – without care or hassle – when traveling in their cars. We believe our OE sound solutions provide the dealer with consumer desired options that present profit opportunities….a win, win,” Malone concluded.

Hi, What do you think about the future of CarPCs? (aka "Automobile Infotainment Systems")

Will OEM solutions like OnStar, MMI, iDrive, etc continue to dominate along with 3rd party proprietary solutions from Pioneer, Alpine, etc?

What could be done to spark broader adoption of do independent/open sourced efforts - like those discussed on this board?

Here is an interesting (one-sided) article that reminded me I've been wanting to discuss this.

I know that becoming aware of what is going on around the world is important; however, it just seems like such a waste of time to go on websites like CNN to try and find what news is important going on over the world. It's just time consuming and I don't have the time to look for what is important news and what isn't. I guess my question is, how can you check a news website on CNN and spot the important news instead of the useless news that doesn't need to really be known?

Thursday, January 13, 2011 -- Although factory sound systems are becoming more complex, it does not mean that customization of these systems is no longer possible. To address this challenge, Alpine provides several factory integration solutions, including the new PXA-H800 IMPRINT audio processor.

Alpine’s IMPRINT technology is a suite of advanced, automated sound tuning processes. Covering the majority of vehicles, IMPRINT takes the speaker level output from a factory head unit and provides the platform for a complete sound system upgrade. For aftermarket-based systems, IMPRINT takes analog as well as digital inputs and allows for convenient control over certain sound functions and sources through compatible Alpine head units. Alpine amplifiers, speakers and subwoofers can then be connected, for the ultimate high performance, custom-tuned sound system experience.

For more information on Alpine’s factory system integration products visit www.alpine-usa.com

We've seen countless individuals integrate their phone, PMP or tablet into their whip, but for years, we've all been thinking the same thing: "There has to be an easier way." Turns out, there is. One Mr. Romin has seemingly unearthed the solution, which involves a Lilliput FA1042 touchpanel, a Belkin AV dock adapter cable and a critical piece of software by the name of Centrafuse. Working in conjunction, he has enabled his monitor to actually control the iPhone, and when firing up a YouTube video, the content plays back on the big screen while the controls remain visible on the handset. It's a nifty setup, for sure, and we're downright excited to see this rig get installed in a vehicle far too small for American roads in a fortnight or so. For now, catch it working in action just past the break.

Parrot makes 'smart' car radio for Internet Age

LAS VEGAS (AFP) – French mobile technology firm Parrot on Tuesday showed off a "smart" car radio that can find cheap fuel, free parking, and speed traps while taking music requests and placing phone calls.

The Asteroid in-dash receiver will be available in Europe by the end of March and the company is working to get it to the United States by the middle of this year, according to project manager Hocine Belkhoudja.

Parrot is in Las Vegas to show off Asteroid at a major Consumer Electronics show that officially opens on Thursday.

Asteroid has USB ports for MP3 players, GPS devices, and the types of 3G network wireless Internet service keys that people use for laptop computers.

The 3G keys link the radios to the Web, enabling applications to access online services or data and allowing motorists to use the radio to make hands-free telephone calls, according to Belkhoudja.

"You can listen to all the radio in the world on the Web," he said. "You can search for coffee or restaurants nearby, gas stations with the lowest prices or free parking."

The radios can also provide maps and driving routes.

Parrot tailored a version of open-source Android mobile operating software for Asteroid to handle a host of software applications.

Music features on the radios include taking spoken requests for specific songs or artists, with the device scouring connected devices and the Internet for tunes.

Parrot did not reveal the price it would charge, but Belkhoudja promised it would be "very impressive."

Parrot also demonstrated a touch-screen, dash-mounted version of Asteroid that it is working on as a "next step" but would not discuss when it might come to market.

in Telematics todayhttp://intelematicstoday.com/2010/03...of-telematics/
March 1st, 2010 Jeff Shariat

For a long time the biggest problem with connected mobile applications has been the ‘connected’ part. The mobile web has existed for many years, but only since the broad adoption of 3G has a true mobile web emerged. In fact, things aren’t really even about the mobile web anymore, it’s an almost antiquated concept. With the power of the newer generation of mobile devices and increased bandwidth the Web2.0 world is accessible on-the-go. Now the cutting edge of mobile connectivity is downloadable applications.

Every major smartphone platform (for my purposes, iPhone, Android, and WebOS) has apps that can be downloaded and installed to the phone to add functionality and value. The iPhone app store alone is over 140,000 apps with billions of downloads. BILLIONS with a B. Generating an estimated $250 million in revenue per month (which Apple passes 70% of on to developers). That’s staggering…

It’s clear the future of in car technology is the application. As the iPhone and Android app stores continue to grow, spurred recently by the launch of the iTampon iPad (Flurry Analytics reported a 300% increase in new application development in January), users are downloading apps for every purpose you could think of. In the car this wont be limited to just infotainment, applications also offer the opportunity to deliver a la carte safety and security options as well.

It’s pretty clear that consumers like being able to download apps and that the application store model is a viable one, yet there is no real way to download applications to your vehicle. Ford has announced they are developing an API that will allow developers to create applications for smartphones that can be controlled through Sync system’s voice and steering wheel controls. This method of integration is intended to take advantage of the power of the user’s existing devices (a main part of Sync’s strategy) to deliver the functionality and connectivity while the Sync system allows the user to interact with the device more safely.

This will likely be a very effective method of enabling apps for the car, but it will require any plans for a Ford app store to include support for multiple platforms, which is different from the current iPhone / Android specific model. No doubt it can be done, but will the apps also be available through the platform specific store? To launch it sounds like users will only be able to download apps from the app store for their respective device or OS. I’d assume you would be able to download the same app both from Ford and from iTunes. That would make the most sense for getting the apps into users devices.

Continental’s AutoLinQ is introducing the concept of the app store as well with a head unit that will support Android based applications. Continental also plans to distribute an SDK that will allow developers to create automotive specific applications for the android platform. [Author's Tangent: This is possible because Android is open source and can be modified and extended legally. Check out this post about open source technology on sister site Tech to Live By.]

Mercedes-Benz’s mbrace system and OnStar both offer apps for the smartphone that allow users to interact with their car (vehicle diagnostics, door unlock, etc) remotely. Even Popular Science recently took notice and highlighted smartphone apps enabled to control the vehicle.

None of this is a full blown app store yet, but it is on it’s way.

Previously we discussed some issues with the value proposition for telematics (and how there probably shouldn’t be any) and the revenue and customer satisfaction opportunities associated with the app store are off the charts. By enabling others to develop for your platform you allow a few things to happen:

* The volume of apps is far far greater than any company could develop on their own.
* Apps are developed to address specific needs in the consumer base.
* The only cost to the company is the management of the app store and the approval process (and the iPhone app store covers at least part of those costs with fees to developers).

I would assume at some point, there will be an open platform where a company will allow others to create their own content and not be limited to a specific system or application. To start developers will modify existing apps to be used in the car, but over time there will be new breeds of applications that will leverage the unique environment of the car. Apps that utilize geo locations will no doubt get a boost, but in particular I look forward to seeing how developers can integrate and leverage the vehicle platforms strengths to create yet to be considered applications for users.

The challenges facing the automotive adoption of applications are not small ones…

Safety is at the forefront of reasons people hate the idea of apps in the car. Obviously these apps need to be implemented in a way that is safer then using your phone while driving and, in turn, the approval process for applications will likely have to be extremely rigorous (more so than the ridiculous Apple process). The ‘old way’ of thinking about automotive electronics is a barrier as well. Some companies struggle with getting out of the 2-5 year electronics life cycle (shortening that cycle to keep up with changing technology and customer preferences is a significant benefit of bringing the newer mobile technologies to the vehicle).

The lack of a standard is a difficulty in any new technology. Continental has gone the route of extending an open source OS (android) which leverages the existing application and developer base. Ford isn’t tying themselves to smartphone platform and is instead enabling developers to interact with the vehicle from multiple platforms through an API. Which approach will make the most sense in the long run? Ford’s probably offers the most flexibility in user devices, but will Continental’s provide better integration between the vehicle and the application?

The rollout of 4G wireless technologies is also a key factor in the development of advanced vehicle applications. WiMax and LTE will battle for marketshare (WiMax has a headstart, but LTE is well backed and will, in some ways, be easier to rollout). Strategy Analytics’ Randy Frank talks a little bit about the differences in the technologies and the backers on either side of the firing lines. They key is that both technologies provide higher bandwidth mobile applications. While many in-car technologies are currently tied to low bandwidth data-over-voice technologies the increased bandwidth will provide opportunities to significantly increase the interaction between the in-vehicle technology and the outside world. This means improvements in everything from search and download times to the possible delivery of mobile IP Television. Whatever the increased bandwidth is used for, the rollout of these networks is a very important element in the overall growth of telematics.

Apple is making ~$80 million a month from applications. Granted, they had to create a hardware and software platform, but automotive companies already have a hardware platform (the car) and they need to enable customers to take advantage of the hardware the way that smartphones have. Each app is an opportunity for the user to customize their experience, engage the customer more deeply and increase customer satisfaction.

Soon OEM’s wont have to make all the decisions about the functionality of a customers system…the customer will be able to pick and choose the features and functionality they want and create a unique system tailored to their tastes. It is the convergence and integration of these tools that will expand opportunities for auto-makers, for developers and for any service provider who has a good idea.

Update: The time has come. The Apps are coming… Join us in San Diego for the Apps and Automotive Conference from Telematics Update.

Here's an announcement about some of the things it has planned for Onstar upgrades in the future.

Over on Facebook, the Volt team post some screenshots from the Driver Information Display. I'm not sure how to do an external link to the album from outside, but I think you can go to http://www.facebook.com/chevroletvolt, and navigate from there to the photos.

Lastly, there's a Crunchgear article on the Volt, focusing specifically on the driver interface.

A little light reading for a lazy Friday afternoon.

Techspot has put together a roundup of low priced Solid State Drives. Particularly interesting to me was the boot time graph on the 'real world applications' page - I didn't have a very good sense of how much time one would save by moving to one of these drives.

I wouldn't pay much attention to the prices out of this article - if you check your favorite bargain websites every day, you will probably see these drives on sale often.

My carpc is currently based on a Acer Revo Atom based nettop. It's basically Acer's netbook without the screen, which is what I was looking for as I am going to use an 8" lilliput in my dash. I was somewhat concerned about the speed of the processor because I'd heard horror stories of the speed of an Atom. I was pleasantly surprised when I hooked the hdmi out to my 42" screen living room and ran Google earth in full HD with little in the way of stuttering or lag. The power of the ion chipset, I guess!

Time marches on, however and the new generation of htpc/nettops/mini pcs are coming out with the next generation of processors. Zotac has come out with a new series of bare bones PCs that incorporate Intel's CULV processors, including the Core 2 Duo-based Celeron SU2300 CPU. The Tech Report has a detailed review of the new unit here.

I was wondering about the difference in speed and power consumption between the two processors until I saw that Anandtech has a good comparison of the two processors over here.

I might be looking into upgrading sooner than I thought!

I just listened to cnet's review of the Audi A8 and was blown away:

http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-13746_7-20014492-48.html

One of the more advanced features of the car is the ability for the suspension system to get route+gps information from the headunit and adjust the suspension accordingly. I have yet to see a carpc system that's advanced enough and integrated enough to do that. So putting on my engineer hat, I started thing of what we need in software to be able to do something like that and ran into a few not-so-easy-to-solve problems. Of which problems leads me to believe we are a couple years behind these advanced features.

The biggest problem is that current navigation APIs are limited. I could be wrong, but I don't know of any commercial or open navigation product that allows you to get information on "the next turn" with or without an actual route set. Maybe I can be proven wrong on the windows side. I know Linux has no such concept at the moment in any apps that I know of.

The qt-mobility location API's (which are cross-platform) help, but that's just a start. With these API's we can figure out what road we are on, the direction, and possibly grab the next turn. Then we can use something like nobdy to get data and do things contextually to the vehicle via the CAN bus. To illustrate:

[Qt-location backend service] => [nobdy plugin] => nobdy => suspension ecu.

In time, this is possible, but it's not very generic as each vehicle has a different protocol it speaks for adjusting the suspension (if it even supports it at all). All this leads me to believe that without intimate knowledge of the car, we'll always be behind as it's trivial for manufacturers to deliver these kinda of features on cars where they already have intimate knowledge from the bottom up.

Are we going to be playing catchup from here on out? Are there other areas we can innovate in?

So, from time to time I read the Telematics Update, a website that caters to OEMs and others that are attempting to catch up to what you all have been doing here for the last 10 years.

This is a real issue, people do not always understand what an auto app and that one can designs apps to be used intuitively while driving.

I've got a friend here that works on human computer interaction and she suggested checking out an older cognitive modeling to measure how busy drivers are and calculate how much time it takes them to do to something.

She also suggested checking out some driving simulators. Here and here.

Thought this blog post on the Freescale TechForum and Auto App marketplaces was interesting...In particular, there is debate regarding liability for automotive applications which is a big factor in the sloooow pace of innovation.

I cannot help but note that mp3Car has the largest auto app store online right now.

http://blogs.strategyanalytics.com/auto/?p=119
"OEMs say they need to ensure that the vehicle can be operated safely; that liability issues are pre-empted; that key elements of in-vehicle HMI are properly integrated; that branding messages are preserved and not superseded; and that the security of the on-board systems and the customer’s information are maintained. For these reasons, OEMs will be seeking assistance to establish validation processes and criteria for apps coming into the vehicle.

Liability stood out among these issues as a point of disagreement. While OEM representatives say car makers will be blamed for any app failure, and dealers will be forced to cope with these complaints, non-auto industry executives thought consumers would simply blame the app maker, telecom carrier or handsets supplier. Unfortunately, car makers cannot afford to gamble that they won’t be blamed for failures."

What I want to know is how you can check things like fuel levels, etc. if your car is parked (and presumably turned off). Does OnStar cache 'state information' in the cloud about your vehicle when you shut down, or does it wake the car up when pinged?
App stores do not represent the future of the mobile industry according to Google's vice president of engineering Vic Gundotra, who maintains consumers will instead turn to web browsers to fill their information and entertainment needs. Speaking Thursday at the Mobilebeat conference in San Francisco, Gundotra said no one, including Google, is rich enough to support all of the myriad mobile platforms in existence, a circumstance that mandates a shift in thinking away from the fragmented app store model.

"What we clearly see happening is a move to incredibly powerful browsers," Gundotra said. "Many, many applications can be delivered through the browser and what that does for our costs is stunning. We believe the web has won and over the next several years, the browser, for economic reasons almost, will become the platform that matters and certainly that's where Google is investing." Gundotra added that Apple CEO Steve Jobs proclaimed "Build for the web" with the initial launch of the iPhone, a statement that met with resistance from developers: "I think Steve really did understand that, over the long term, it would be the web, and I think that's how things will play out."

Ford continues to add to the features that they put into their integrated solution. Here's a post from Engadget that has a press release from Ford attached:

Engadget: In a world of automotive cellphone hate, Ford promotes SYNC as the solution

They've added some lockout features, as well as the ability for your car to read SMS messages to you. I dunno... some of the messages I get would sound pretty bad read out loud.

If you head over to YouTube, Ford has a number of videos demonstrating the various features of SYNC on their channel

I may have to head over to the local Ford dealer to try it out myself.

The information I was looking at yesterday was this article on a pushback effort against all of the new laws being passed against being distracted while driving:

Fairwarning: Lobbyists Target Distracted Driving Campaigns by Oprah, Ray LaHood

but since I read it, there has been another article posted on the same website:

Fairwarning: DRIVE Coalition Hits a Wall

It seems the initial proposal was just that; an effort to try and start a rally against the laws being passed recently.

Here's where the CarPC arena is going... manufacturers are coming out with competition to what the folks here have been doing for a long time, in response to market pressure:

Edmunds: Automakers Grapple with New-Age Dilemma: Software or Hardware?

The article is a few months old but is a good overview.

Honestly, I don't see how they can be as quick at innovation as either this community can, or the Smartphone market - the pace of development there borders on the insane. Unfortunately for the OEMs, the life of a car is a lot longer than a PC or a smart phone. Most purchasers (ordinary consumers, not enthusiasts) of a device have a tendency to keep it unchanged once they buy it.

There is also the safety factor. I've got another few links to be posted on the coming struggle between what we think we should be allowed to do and what the authorities consider safe.
