Chaps.

Firstly, please forgive my COMPLETE lack of knowledge about car PC's and bear with me.

I have a 2005 Saab 9-3. The audio system is a real P.I.T.A as its fibre optic and so integrated that replacing anything is a nightmare.

My CD player (separate unit to head unit) has gone the way so many of Saabs CD players have gone and is not playing or ejecting.

I wanted to try and rip the guts out and fit in something like a rasberry Pi with HDD/flash drive full of tracks (I dont mind if they are CDA format if need be).

My questions really is can i do this?

Can i replace the CD mechanism with a PC or HDD with music on so that the head unit will still think its a CD?

Bear in mind its fibre optic fed?

Am i being too optimistic?

I have found saablin.net but this only works with the older style 9-3 (T7) whereas mine is T8.

Hi all,

I would like to get airplay to work to my carputer. It's running windows 7 32 bit. I have both wired and wireless networking. I can setup the ICS to enable others to connect to the wifi and the be on the same network for airplay. Is there software that will let the computer detect as an audio and video target?

For bluetooth connections to work like it does in with my pioneer dvd/nav headunit I will be replacing. I currently get a popup saying a call is coming in from (###) ###-#### press call symbol to answer or hangup signal to ignore. How is that setup on a carputer or can it be?

Centrafuse seems to be the software to get for carputers. What hardware is needed to run the NAV version? How is its integration with itunes and media center? IE is it worth doing?

I'm a firm believer in "The only stupid question is the one you don't ask." I'm looking for all sort of input from those who have used the products or can help me get things working. I'm new to carputers but an old hand with PCs (windows and linux) and would appreciate as much info as I can get to work with in making my decisions and getting things running. Thanks in advance.

Hello everyone,

Long time lurker here, finally decided I will be installing a removable Nexus 7 tab into my 2012 Skoda Octavia vRS. I have a question (sure I will have plenty more) which is I currently have a Bolero factory stereo in my car which I am obviously going to replace.

This morning however as I reversed I realised I'll be losing the Parking Sensor graphic on the screen as shown below;

Has anyone else done something to keep the use of this, or is it just something I will lose?

Thank you!

Hi.

I figured I should get an account here and ask a couple of questions so I hope someone would be able to help.

To start off my name is Mike. I drive a toyota celica. I'm wanting to use the dash from the satnav option on the car and mount a screen. (Not sure how in depth to go but guess the more info the better?) My plan was....

Mount the PC in the boot. Everything is setup. But I figured "USB screen" that would be easy! But now I'm stuck trying to get the right settings that I thought would be easy.

Not thinking it through propperly I've got the satnav center console and smoothed it over. So went from this....

To This...

I then decided to grab a 7" screen to mount behind and figured "when I need to adjust the scaling on my Nvidia gfx card its easy using the adjust desktop app" (lets not jump ahead here!)

so mounted the screen but was too big. (It's a mimo 720s I got given off a friend).

I stripped off the casing and it fits flush..

But here is the problem. The resolution is far to big. Uh-oh.

So here I am. Not knowing what to do to get that resolution to fit the center console. Or if their is anything that I can do to sort this out.

I'm hoping to find a resolution to this here... (get it?? :behindsofa: )

Anyone got any advice or recomendations? :)

I now understand how to meter out the wire to find the right one. I was wondering if anybody could comment on this particular wire I want to use to run the feed to a 4 way video amplifier.

Its from Radio shack and is a shielded wire with a tinned end. I figure I could solder or crimp it in.

Hi everyone
I've been a member here for a while but don't think I've posted before

I'm thinking about making a car computer out of an old laptop
it's a dual core with 4GB ram so it should be powerful enough to do what I want
I'm planning on using a 7 or 10 inch touchscreen as the monitor/control panel with no keyboard fitted (unless I have to have one)

I'd like to run it in Windows if possible with some decent skin on it (not really looked into that bit yet)
What I'd like it to be able to do is the following

Computer with wifi and bluetooth talking to my phone
I was thinking along the lines of something like this Dell DW 1703 Mini PCI-E Wireless Lan Card 802.11a/b/g/n + Bluetooth 4.0 FXP0D
Think it would do the job?
Also it has to have satnav capabilities, I use a tomtom at the moment but I'll have to change to ssomething else
Anyone got any ideas about what I can use? obviously it will have an external gps antenna
Also I'd like it to have DAB incorporated in it I was thinking about one of these EZCAP FM DAB Radio DVB-T Digital TV USB Receiver Dongle Stick
Has anyone got one of them working in the car yet?
I'd also if possible like normal "FM" radio any ideas how to incorporate this
As to amplifier etc I've no idea, I don't need anything fancy or "loud" as I'm 50.
I was thinking along the lines of maybe using a "normal" car radio as the audio output from the computer although I'd like it to have a proper seperate amp and not rely on an old radio
I'd like the volume controlled by up down buttons on the touchscreen display

Anyone think this is possible and would it all work?
Will a windows system work, or would I have to use another operating system?

All ideas/comments welcome

Joycon Help

I received my Joycon EXR this morning, and while I have it installed, am having some issues that I think may just be newbie related. I am using it in a 2006 A4, this uses a CAN-BUS system, so I have an aftermarket harness that accepts the CAN-BUS and converts it to resistance based. Easy enough so far. So, I connected everything up, clicked Auto Detect, pressed each button on my steering wheel, and then assigned those buttons to actions. However, for some reason the track forward / backward button is not doing anything. Do I need to adjust the resistance value using the dial on the board?

Secondly, I want to be able to open a Voice Command app on my Nexus 7 using a button on the steering wheel, I can see the App Link option in the software, but how do I program that using my Windows PC? Do I simply type the command to that app into the Full Path Of Application field in the software?

Finally, is it possible to get some of the large heat shrink tubing at a hardware store? I have only ever seen small heat shrink, but have also not looked for anything large. The reason I ask, mine came pre-shrunk. LOL. I think the excessive heat we have had here in Virginia caused it to shrink.

Thanks.

Hello so im getting what i consider IMO a high end system based on what i had before at least and have couple questions if yall could help please (sorry if some of them are retarded)

Car: 2009 Mitsubishi Lancer ES

System:

AMPS: Alpine MRX-F65 (highs) and Alpine MRX-M110 (bass)
SUBS: JL Audio 10W3v3-4 (in Parallel for 2omhs) (x2)
SPEAKERS: Polk Audio MM6501. (front and back)
DECK: Kenwood KDC-X996
IPAD: iPad Mini with a float mount from SoundMan
Wires: 0 Gauge from knukonceptz
RCA: from knukonceptz

Question:

-I can’t seem to find anywhere that tell me how to run my wires for best quality sound (for example should i ran my power from the driver side to the trunk and the speaker and RCA wires on the passenger?)

-Also i think ill go with SecondSkin from my deadening, but im confused what products i should get and what works best in your opinion like should i lay vibration damper pro and then some CCF on top or something like that?

-how close should i place my Power Distributor Block to my amps (i want to know in order to know how much wire to buy)

-and last question is should i get some EQ, Line Drivers and Crossovers from AudioControl? or is this a waste of money and over kill?

Thank you so so so much in advance for those of you taking the time to answer some question i really appreciate it

I've been wanting to fabricate a mount to replace my car stereo with my iPad 4th gen, similar to how many on YouTube have done where I can easily...

I've been wanting to fabricate a mount to replace my car stereo with my iPad 4th gen, similar to how many on YouTube have done where I can easily slide it in and it docks. The problem I'm facing is that the systems that allow you to do this seem pricy.

My dad recently installed the Sony sound processor in his truck and since its only $50 I figure it is worth looking into, but the dock has the 30pin connector and my iPad has the lightning connector. What I am trying to find out is if the 30pin to lightning dongle will allow audio streaming, which I'm fairly certain it does. And second, is there a way to ditch the cradle all together and use some type of connector that would use the lightning for audio output and take it straight into the sound processor and allow me to have a volume knob mounted somewhere in the car?

If this wont work, I may look into getting a stereo and mounting it in the glovebox and using the standard USB cable to hook it up but I'm trying to see how cheaply I can get my goal accomplished without angering the wife haha

So having never really had a car pc before, I'm diving in and want to get one installed this month. The end product that I want is a 7" Double DIN Touchscreen running Android x86. It must have bluetooth capabilities to connect to my phone and act as a hands-free device, and the sound must go through my existing car speakers. There must be USB sockets to connect to a webcam (I've tested this part on Android so it works, I just need the available ports) and there must be a reasonable size hard drive to store my video/audo collection. I also need WiFi in order to connect to my home network, and GPS for use as a sat nav.

So, I think my basic shopping list is something along the lines of:

* A Car PC which is able to run Android x86
* A touchscreen 7" double din unit (Lilliput?)
* WiFi dongle
* External Bluetooth GPS receiver
* Something to power all of this
* A way of connecting the audio to my existing speakers

Can anyone give me a budge in the right direction of what products I actually need and whether there is something that I'm missing?

Cheers,

Hello all. Newbie to the CarPC world. I'm currently running a pretty hefty XBMC system at home, and want to emulate that in our 2005 QX56. I'm planning on replacing the OEM speakers\amp\sub with Planet Audio amps and Infinity speakers.

Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.7 installed in dash for music and navigation

CarPC installed in center console for movies\TV shows for rear passengers

I want to be able to route the audio from the Tab to both the front and rear speakers, or just the front while the CarPC goes only to the rear. Any advice on how to accomplish this would be appreciated. I'm currently thinking about running two amplifiers - one for the front and one for the rear. I'm still not real sure on the best way to hook it all up - crossovers that would be required, etc. I'm not opposed to installing a headunit if necessary as well - one that I could tie into the steering wheel controls would be nice for volume control. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Hello all!

I'm looking to install a rooted N7 into my car (a 1999.5 Audi a4 Avant) as my main audio source. Here's my goal-

In car charging- (removing battery and using the car's power)
bypassing the internal DAC and using an external DAC for higher quality sound- which would then connect to an amp, running 4 channels and a sub.
(such as this, only using the headphone jack instead of USB)
http://www.head-fi.org/t/627459/use-...-by-step-guide
Using an OTG cable for an external hard drive.

Is all of this possible? I'd like to make the N7 removable for security reasons, so I'll have to work on a pin type connector for it- much like those found on removable faceplates on car stereos.

I'll be tethering my phone for Wi-fi.

I did a search, but haven't come up with the combination I'm looking for yet.

So my car (1996 Saab) is setup with push button start (with two switches controlling the ignition and accessory circuits), this allows me completely...

So my car (1996 Saab) is setup with push button start (with two switches controlling the ignition and accessory circuits), this allows me completely keyless use of the vehicle once I gain access to the interior of the vehicle.
So I have just been carrying around my remote to unlock (and disarm the OEM immobilizer), but since I don't have to remove my keychain to start the car, it's often a pain to fumble around for it just to get in the car.
I was thinking about doing a cellphone based system probably via BT, but then unless I can get it setup where it does it automatically when approaching the car (not that easy since by OEM system shares the same button for lock and unlock and I'm not sure of an aftermarket system that would interface with Saab electronics) or I would still end fumbling around for my phone if I did it via an app.

Anyway during my research I came across suggestion of having a hidden capacitive touch button, I like that idea for:
1. I wont have to fumble for a remote, phone, etc
2. I wont need to bring my phone if I just run out to the car to grab something (would be a pain if it was charging or being used, etc)
3. Nothing to lose or worry about going dead, etc

Upon further research I also found some capacitive touch grid sensors that can recognize 'something unique' (I assume like pattern unlock on a cell phone). I was thinking that for the added security, I would pair Arduino control board that would momentary close a switch (that is wired in parallel to the lock & arm/unlock button on a spare OEM remote inside the vehicle, this way I can arm/disarm the OEM immobilizer).

Anyway has anyone done this before? How hard is it going to achieve a input from a touch sensor to the Arduino and have the Arduino momentary close a circuit between points (tho I suppose I could use a relay so as long as I had it output a momentary high voltage that would suffice).

I have found standalone capacitive touch buttons (with a momentary function) for about $25, should I just use one of those and with the fact that it's hidden and no one would suspect looking for it to be enough security.

So I have a 2006 Bu with a decent stereo system, Optima Yellowtop and a Big Three upgrade. All that has my stereo working great with no dimming but I have one last issue, 12v outlets blow.

I am a geek so I need to know the best and/or most efficient way to make it so I can plug a bunch of stuff in and not keep blowing a fuse and/or melting male cigarette plugs.

I know the problem right now is one or two things. The wiring they put in these cars is acceptable for generations past, but way too thin for the power requirements we have now. At one point when I was delivering pizzas I needed to power a tablet, phone, gps, car top light, and an electric cooler. Needless to say it took quite a bit of trickery to get it to work well and something gave in the center console armrest and it no longer works. Its not a fuse, I'm sure something melted.

So I need extra cigarette plugs and maybe an inverter. I bought an extra center console that I will modify to keep my current one unmodified. So should I just be running better wire? Or is there an easier solution using say a small battery as a capacitor. I was thinking maybe a XS Power battery under the seat or in the console if there is space with beefy wire from the battery to the plugs, using the existing small wires to charge the battery. I have an isolator somewhere if I need it.

Basically I planned to beef up the existing two sockets, and mold in a 3 or 4 port cigarette adapter and an inverter. I don't need the inverter but if I am going outside my comfort zone to mold in plugs then I might as well stick an inverter in there as well, even though I hate inverters.

I presume that the existing wires are part of one of those annoying bundles wrapped in electrical tape that would be a pain in the *** to upgrade. So either I can just run a new line alongside my 1/0 wire to a barrier strip or install a small battery between the existing wiring and the outlets. I assume a 4ga wire should be enough power.

Also any advice on which alternators fit in this car would be helpful. I had trouble finding any better alternators that would fit.

Sorry for rambling but I can't find much information on beefing up the sockets despite the fact that plenty of people have to have the issue of increasing electrical demand.

Hi there everyone!

I'm completely ignorant concerning this topic, so forgive me if I make any newbie mistakes :)

I have a 97 Ford F-150 crewcab that I would like to get rid of the radio entirely as I only use my Android phone for music. Currently, I use one of those tape to audio jack convertors to listen to my music and it's quite a painful experience :)

I have been looking around and it looks like I might need a preamp like this. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

What I'm wondering if there's something out there that would allow me to connect via bluetooth. If I have to, I'll hang an audio jack out the blank plate that will replace the stereo but I thought it would be zoomy to just get into the car and turn on the tunes without having to connect a line to the phone.

Would there be a way to do this? If so, what parts would I need to make it happen?

Thanks in advance for any help you can provide!

I downloaded and installed RR, played with it for a while, and thought, this is a good start point.
some how, forum search tool doesnt provide me any result when I search for "bmw". so I thought maybe saying hi to everybody and ask for some guidence would be a good idea.
so, hello to all and please tell me where to start.
thanks in advance, and excuse the newbie.

This is the center console from a Mercedes 190E. I plan on integrating the Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 7'' into the center console. I plan on retaining a head unit if possible so I can still have a regular radio and control over the radio antenna. I am wondering if anyone could suggest a head unit that is half the length (depth wise) of a normal DIN unit. The ash tray will be deleted and DIN moved down, but there isn't much room behind the ash tray to work with. Additionally, this head unit needs to have aux in the rear. Suggestions?

Dual headrest input from iPod classic

Putting in dual headrest monitors in the excursion. Abandoned my apple tv in the car plan.

Want to put dual rca inputs in the car so each kid can choose what movie they want from ipod classic then output into the head rest monitors.

I also want them to be able to watch the same thing at the same time and on the stock flip down screen from one of the ipod input. The headrest monitors im looking at have dual inputs.

So I will need to split the audio and video signal from one. Is a Y splitter going to to work? I have done tons of internet searches on this and really cant nail it down.

So many of the search results are around car audio and amplifiers forums. Bottom line sounds like I can do it but the quality revolves around the output voltage of the device. So in this scenario the ipod classic is the output device.

So im curious if an ipod classic will output enough juice to split the audio and video signals to the different screens. I cannot find anything that says what the output voltage is.

I have seen 12 volt car video splitters for multi screen set up but nothing for audio. Could I use the same thing for the audio left and right signals?

Havent seen anything automotive that is for video and audio.

Any help appreciated.

I've been running a SGT7 for some time now with a dual ganged pot for volume control. However you cannot permanently mount a tablet into your car like you do a carpc or a laptop due to heat. You could however if you remove the battery since its what gets damaged and doesn't allow you do even turn on the device when hot. On my SGT I had a HDMI Media Dock fiberglassed into my stock faceplate, turning it into a dock in my car. Worked awesome till I noticed a crack that I had to repair and I ended up selling things and trying other things and this and that. The SGT is awesome but to get better use out of it and have a funner experience the stock rom must go. However lately they have not fixed the audio output of the hdmi dock on CyanogenMod Releases. They have been working on it but working on other things is a higher priority.

So I decided to try other tablets finding out in my small space I cannot go larger than a SGT or Kindle Fire. Other vehicles could easily run larger tablets. My preference is the Nexus. Its the best tablet around and I wish I could have used it but after trying, there is no way.

I ended up picking up a laptop and a lilliput for cheap so I'm back to the carpc world. BUT installing Android 4.0 on the laptop dual booted with windows. I feel I'll have a better experience this way since I require windows to data log and tune my 600hp sports car.

Tablets are awesome but you can find yourself trying soo much or almost destroying the tablet easily. lol my first attempt at molding a dock resulted in buying a new shell for it after destroying it to get it out of the mold. Then later noticed that the tablet was somewhat odd shaped which prevented me from removing it easily, it wasn't square lol.

I hope all goes well with dual booting Windows 8 and Android ICS..

Well I'm back. I just picked up a lilli 619 for 56 bucks on ebay and two pretty nice laptops, one I'm gonna keep for myself and the other will go in the car. I'm working on getting a good setup together and I'm about done with dual booting Windows8 and Android ICS.

Was hoping to see good news on replacement touch panels such as capacitive but the searching has given shady results. They are out there but .... well? thats exactly it. Someone or two has tried. some are bad this and that. Nothing concrete unless I'm searching the wrong terms.

Does anyone have any good info on converting the lilli to a capacitive touch screen to work perfect with windows 8 and android? I see people were discussing the lilliput doesn't work right on Windows 8, something about the axis is wrong unless using the lilliputs touch drivers which turns it into a mouse.

Ugh soo much I gotta catch up on!

Hi,

I'm looking at some touch screen monitors (for example the Lilliput 669GL), and they come with HDMI, DVI and VGA inputs. Can all of these inputs be used to control any device? For example, does it matter whether I connect up a windows/linux/android machine, and does it matter whether they are connected via HDMI or DVI/VGA? I'm struggling to understand how just plugging something into the input would allow the touchscreen to control the device behind the scenes. Is there something in between that I'm missing or is it just pure magic? ;)

Hello
So I have been reading on this site for a while now studying and just wondering a few things,
I would like to put in a carputer in my Lincoln LS and was wondering if a DC to DC PSU will be okay for this PC or do I need an inverter.
The computer is an HP DC5100 SFF. The PSU in the computer now is "HP dps-240fb-1" 240W MAX output, input is 100-240V ~ /5A 47Hz-63Hz
http://ak1.ostkcdn.com/images/products/P12418599.jpg

I'm thinking about getting a couple car batterys so I can use my electronics while the car is off. They would not be connected to the alternator, I would charge them when they get low. Does this sound good?
Let me know what you think? Im also considering suggestions and ideas so feel free to give your input
My car is completely stock right now

hi everyone I am new to this sight but stumbled across a post during an exhausting search for some relative options. what I am looking for is a device to display an exhaust gas temp and boost gauge on my 7" touch screen stereo ( that I have not yet purchased yet ) so i don't have to install and look at a bunch of pod gauges that create more blind spots and are slightly blinding at night! I am towing with a 1999 ford f350 powerstroke diesel, I pull a camper and trailer, there are a lot of us out there looking for such a system. now my touch screen stereo or the one I am looking at installing has dvd, cd, sd card, bluethooth, fire wire and usb jacks as well as navigation and rca connections which seem to be pretty much standard anymore. does or can someone makes a device that can plug into or link up with such a stereo so that we can view 1 to 3 gauge readouts on this screen rather than pod gauges that create blind spots or are blinding from the led light created by them. any info would be apprectiated!! I am not a computer savy person I stick to suspension and chassis design and building so when it comes to the ecu's and pcm's + proramming I have a good friend that handles that for me. he will be helping me on this if possible. we were talking and he said the only way he could think of IF i could find a device that would read 2 to 3 gauges and transmit them into a digital signal would be to hack the stereo and add an app to view this like the software we use with our bazzaz fi and auto tuner control systems on our sand rails. any info would be much appreciated. I have talked to innovative and he said a japanese company called hks used to make exactly what I am looking for but doesn't anylonger but did for a decade. does anyone know what this would've been called and is anyone making this device for a diff app still? these trucks do come with boost sensors so they could be read from the pcm's but they do not come with exhaust gas temp sensors so those would have to be added and the pyrometer is the most important gauge if your going to tune the truck for more pulling power. for those with auto trans a trans temp gauge is important as well and the pcm does read a factory sensor for that too.

Whats up everyone?
I'm new to this forum, actually... this is my first official car enthusiast forum that I am an active participant in... so yeah lol
Anyways, my name is Jay and I own a 03 Nissan Altima 2.5S. I bought it in September to replace my 97 accord (R.I.P) that had served its purpose valiantly.
I always wanted to put a computer in my car since I was 17, but I never had a decent car to do it with.. until now.
Currently, I am stereoless, and have been for a few weeks, with the exception of last week when i prematurely put my half-baked project back into my car.
I ended up taking it out yesterday to complete it properly this time.
Well, enough about my endless perils and lets get down to business.

CarPC Specs::

Cheap Ebay 7" LCD Touchscreen with VGA
(literally came with just the screen, no enclosure or anything... it made this project 10x worse than I anticipated.. but it works well :) )

JVC 730BT Car Stereo
(wanted it for the multi-colour function.. and the bluetooth connectivity// spares wires and works independently if ever my project was to not work:tape2: )

IBM Thinkpad T60- 2gb ram, ati radeon x1300, 60gb SSD
( I feel that laptops get the job done just as well as an itx setup, and they're cost-effective if you know where to look)

250 GB Removable HDD
( for all the movies, music, and games I want)

USB OBD2 scanner
(I like to monitor my vehicle and its performance)

And some other things that I will illustrate using pictures; when i get the opportunity to take and post em
So far, I've spent $350 for everything including the materials.
....................................

So far, between work and school, I've been able to nearly complete the project. Now I must say, the way I made my build will probably be frowned upon in terms of quality,
but remember, this is my very first attempt and after all the research I put in to understanding the basics of doing it right, I determined that the products I used will be
more than adequate for my satisfaction....

To customize my frame, I used a LOT of bondo glaze putty... and it actually works well I must say. And yes, it is temperature resistant... hasn't cracked once (on another project that
I was involved in) and I live in Canada, so our temperature is all over the place at times.

I used a LOT of hot glue to keeps things in place just until the Epoxy Glue had set.

I used CHEAP spray paint from Wal-M4rt to colour my bezel to the factory knob colours. I couldn't figure a nice way to keep the silver and to taper the paint for a real clean
finish (that was financially viable... I am a student, after all)

.................................................. ............

What's left to do is to sand the new revision of the frame and to paint the bezel.
I want to know how to create the grain texture that most car bezels have... if anyone has an idea that can help me out, I'd appreciate it

I would also like to know which frontend is best for a rookie? I need something simple just to play music and watch videos with ease.. not Windows Media please...

Some pics will be provided soon. Stay Tuned

Hi,

I've never attempted anything in the way of a car PC before (and from what I've read using Android isn't going to be a true PC anyway for the true enthusiasts!) but I'm just hoping someone can guide me in the right direction if I show what I want to achieve.

The main goal I have is to have a Touchscreen Double Din unit linked to an Android device so that I can run the Torque app with a forward facing camera for track days. So, I have a few questions:

I assume I will need one of the Lilliput monitors, but which one and do they come with a Double DIN caddy or do I have to get this separately?

How do I connect an Android device to the monitor so that I will be able to use the touchscreen aspect of the screen? Can I get a HDMI Android device like the MK802 and use the HDMI port, or if not then what do I need to do?

How would I connect a camera up so that Android can use it in the Torque app?

Sorry for what may seem like simple questions but I'm a little out of my depth here!

Thanks,

Hey everyone I am looking to start a new project in my car and would love some opinions / feedback. So here is where I am at now, I have a 2012 Toyota Tundra SuperCab with a Kenwood DNX-7190HD.

What I would like to do is to have a 7 or 8 inch LCD (touchscreen isn't a must) where I can plug my Android Samsung Galaxy Note II into and it will display on the LCD in the DD and two two in the back. So essentially a 1 to 3 HDMI splitter will be required.

Some of the questions I have is what will I need to hook up the LCD to power, factory audio and if I want to use the touch screen how will that interface. Essentially I want to replace my HU with my phone.

This is the LCD screen I was thinking about:
7" Lilliput 669GL HIGH BRIGHTNESS HDMI/DVI/VGA LCD panel pre assembled in Bybyte's Double din LCD frame LCDFR-669

So I hand it over to you mp3car.com... Please help!

I'm trying to put together a little project for my car and am looking for a little help or guidance. I know my cars circuitry well, as well as intermediate computer circuitry but unfortunately I missed the generation of the circuitry I'm trying to set up. I have basic knowledge of circuitry components and such. I attached a crude drawing of what I am trying to accomplish. I know this is newbish but please don't flame and I have been studying ways to accomplish this sparingly and a microcontroller seems like the best way unless you guys have alternate ideas.

This sites search engine is terrible.

And I am trying to change my avatar but after clicking the first 4 or 5 obvious places to change it I still can't find how! I know I'm at the point of being a d**k about all this because I have brought it up in the past but nothing has changed since 9 months ago.

I know you moderators are kind of on your heels with all the new techno but either ***** or get of the pot. There is still a reason for this site and you guys can be completely awesome and rock the socks off everyone but I think there is a bit of old placement gallery going on.

Reformat, get into the bluetooth wireless stuff. Even try tapping that cutting edge of wifi/bluetooth. What do you guys need?

I don't know if it's a money thing? If it is you need to be asking for donations. I'm a current member of http://www.buggiesgonewild.com/ who I have recently been asking what they are using as a search engine. I actually have donated about 100 bucks in the last year because the site is so good. I don't want to shock you, but are there anything you can do with your search engine?

I'm starting to ramble and I don't want that. Please please please do something about your search engine. And a reformat of your site wouldn't hurt either.

I just thought I would intoduce myself. I'm in South Alabama near the beaches, owner of
an 87 911 Targa, and installing a vintage high end system from the early to mid 90's. I wanted
all the high end gear from the era that the car was made and all the stuff I couldn't afford back
then in a car that growing up I dreamed of owning. I do hope to run some sort of tablet in a
center console when I get to the point of building the console. I've come here to try and learn
the best way of doing that with the system I have planned.

Anyway, I look forward to learning from all you fine folks.

Cheers,
Scott

This is a link to my build. I am rather slow with my updates and build due to being a Disabled Vet.
I do hope to be able to make better progress over the next few months, maybe some of you would
like to follow that build.
System consists of:
Sony XES
XES-P1
XES-X1
XES-T1

Sony CDX-91 NIB I found last year

All OZ Audio (Superman logo) speakers
Oz Audio 4" components (kick panels)
Oz Audio 8" in the doors
Oz Audio 10" (pair) in the rear seat pans

All Blade SE amps
Blade SE 8.4 (this will run the 4" component set)
Blade SE 225 (this will run the 8's)
Blade SE 2100 (this will run the 10's)

I'm toying with the idea of getting a Pioneer AVH-P8400. It's £400. I think, for that amount of cash, I can probably knock a decent CarPC together... I have a few questions, and things that are confusing me.

At present I have a Pioneer DEH-P700BT, I mainly use my iPhone as the audio source. I also make/receive phone calls. I use TomTom app and the audio is sent via my speakers. These are 3 'features' I would like to keep, and these are 3 'features' that have me stumped when it comes to a carputer...

I am technicaly. Sorting a PC and hooking it up won't be a problem, tweaking it to work right is where I'll get stuck. Well, may need some help with power, how is powering on/sleep/shutdown controlled?

I'll probably go for a Zotac ITX fanless board, a Lilliput TFT and a decent case, maybe one that sits in the dual din slot, undecided yet. I think for airflow etc it might be better in the boot... Anyway, hardware I should be ok with, it's the software...

Say I put Win 8 and Centrafuse on the setup, how do i.....

- Allow my iPhone to play as an audio source? More so if I continue to use TomTom app...
- GPS on PC, what is available for a Windows PC, and what GPS addon would you recommend?
- Phone calls. How easy is it to make/receive calls? Do you just pair the iPhone and Windows box and use as a speaker phone? What software pulls the contact information and makes dialling out easy? Is there any?
- How do I get Radio on the PC? Are USB/PCI FM/DAB receivers available?

Is it worth keeping/using my existing Headunit hidden away as a 'passthrough' for Aux, and all the other bits and bobs? Or doing away with it and using the audio out of the PC?

I'm not too bothered about playing DVD's or CD's, but if doable that would be good. I'll probably stick a smallish SSD in there and am unsure if I'll store any audio/visual stuff on there... I may stick a router with a 3G stick in the boot and setup a small roaming/adhoc network. More for Air Play ability than browsing though...

Have my basics for the galaxy tab install.
Tablet
Dash Trim/Bezel
Double din kit(really cheap)
Volume Controller(Really cheap)

But need help with audio from tablet to speaker/amp. Ive been doing as much research as possible and it looks like im going to need a mini amp and a noise filter. These go from anywhere between $20 and couple hundred bucks. Looking to get a decent sound, but not trying to spend alot of money. Would it be easier to hook up a single din unit, and plug tablet through radio? I can find a 4x50 watt radio for cheap. Any help would be appreciated.

Right now im running a old pioneer Double din DVD player(5incher). Had someone else do the initial install to my car. I have a single 15 in a ported box with a amp but its nothing special.

Hi
I'm Jay and although ive only just joined the forum, ive been reading threads on here for a while.
What ive decided to do is get a bybyte mini itx double din box, and fit a 1155 motherboard into it with my i3 3 ghz cpu and a low profile heatsink, 8gb of ram, and a 1tb hdd, will a picopsu be able to power this lot?
Also, im purchasing a new set of speakers and an amp to add to my sound system, which gives me a total of 2 amps, the others for the sub.
How will i go around wiring this using a creative sound blaster x-fi usb sound card? (if theres better than this, please let me know)

Thank You

I have a dilemma.I have a 2007 Aspen pearl black with lowered suspension and very unique custom interior. I am asking for your help because after seeing your build I don't think that there is any better person to advise me.

I want to change my car entertainment system which is currently factory. here are a few ideas that i was looking at before i saw yours..

http://www.mp3car.com/android/149669...mirroring.html
with and aftermarket 7" car stereo. ie( AppRadio2, Sony ,Alpine)the problem with this one is that if i use just the android hardware without the head unit then if my phone crashes i am left with no nav, radio,or anything. And if i use the aftermarket car stereo then i can't maximize my screen size

Then I thought why not go big and get a 9" screen and a aftermarket radio and try to overlay or adapt the bigger screen to the head unit , but your post seems to strongly frown on such an idea. Please explain ?

This one i also got from your post. Alpine Hub systems, but my issues that the skins did not look nice at all.I look aslo a lot more than my 4th option which would be a carpc.I just feel like i don't know enough about what i need to make it work.
Even if your can't help me please just drop me a line letting me know this so that i can turn else where for help

On my Android phone (Galaxy Nexus, Android 4.1.1) I use an app called Tasker extensively to automate a ton of stuff on my phone. I am considering getting a new alarm to replace my old AutoPage system, and have decided upon a CompuStar "MaxIT" system with Drone Mobile. I'm interested in doing things like have my phone automatically start the Drone Mobile app when I approach the car, or possibly unlock the car/lock the car when I leave.

When I dock my phone in the car it triggers stuff in the Tasker app already, so it would be very easy to have Tasker save the GPS coordinates when the phone is undocked, but then the GPS would have to constantly scan to know when I'm back in range, so this isn't ideal.

My HU has bluetooth built in I use for streaming from my phone, but the signal gets turned off when I turn off the HU and I can't leave the HU powered up all the time, even with two batteries...

I was thinking about getting a cheap bluetooth headset to just plug keep plugged into a charger all the time so that when the phone comes close it pairs with it and triggers Tasker, but I'm concerned about two things...for one, if I get a call when I'm near the car and answer it the headset will pick it up and I'll have to remember to manually switch to handset after answering. Secondly, I don't know if this will interfere with listening to music over bluetooth with the radio (will connecting the radio disconnect the headset?)

I also thought about a wifi signal, but I don't know of any 12v wifi routers...

Does anyone have any suggestions? I'm sure someone here will have a perfect solution.

Thanks!

ok, so i have acquired all the parts...

foxconn d52s i pulled for 48$ off ebay with 4gig ram ( i know, cheap, but this is just temporary till i get it working )
infinity reference 5 channel amp ( had from a previous radio install in my jeep)
lilliput touchscreen
zoom pc case for 25$ from ebay
m3 atx pico psu
16gb sata SSD drive for 12$ off bay
a 300gb usb drive that i have to store all my music on
a microsloth usb gps dongle that i had laying around from back in the day
4 infinity speakers from the jeep that i pulled with the amp (still have the jeep, but it is going to be a full off road 4x4 now that i have the truck)

Parts i need to get before i can start the install
Cables for the amp
Speaker wire
another bezel for my 05 Dakota so i can go back to the factory sterio if i decide to get rid of this truck and put the carputer in another car
some kind of 8" sub that will fit behind the rear seats (less room here than in my jeep!!!)

i have installed windows 7 on the computer and got it up and running, installed the trial version of centrifuse, and it actually plays music thrrough a boombox that i have connected to the computer in my garage.

what i was wondering is, what front ends are people using, centrifuse is kinda slow on this pc, and i dont like the fact that it has no random function for mp3 playback, unless i am missing something, i have over 12000 songs, and i want to random them.

i tried ride runner on my laptop, but it was somewhat confusing to set up and i could not get it to play any music on my laptop when i started testing before i bought all the parts for the computer

i am trying to do this on the real cheap, until i know for sure i will get it to work in my dodge dakota

i guess my question is, what front ends are working the best right now, i like centrafuse, and i am willing to pay for it when the trial period is up if i can get it working more to my liking. i am gonna try the newest version of ride runner, and hope that this install goes better than my last.

Hi all,

This is my first post on this site, but I'll try and be as clear and to the point as possible.
I'm looking to upgrade my car's stock sound system. New head unit, speakers, an amp and a sub.
What I'm looking for is a head unit capable of powering all the speakers while the amp only
powers the sub. I'm not looking for anything fancy, just something better than stock that'll
impress my friends and that I'll also enjoy. I'm extremely new to the world of car sound systems
and installations, however, I want to do as much research as possible so that I can safely buy and install the
system myself. Basically, my questions are the following:

Should the maximum power wattage of the head unit exactly match that of the speakers I choose?
(i.e. Would a head unit that advertises "4 x 50 Watts maximum power with two-channel 2V preamp outputs"
cooperate with speakers that advertise "360 Watts peak power handling"? Or would I have to connect those
speakers to an amp?)

What is a good website where I can find reasonably priced car audio equipment? I've been looking at Amazon a lot
mostly because I have Prime and don't want it to go to waste, but I'm sure there are better sites out there.

Lastly, what is the best piece of advice you can give me (and newbies in a similar situation) given my current situation?

I'd appreciate any help, thanks in advance!

so, after having 15-ish browser tabs open looking for FAQ's i decided to just ask my question. the FAQ could really use some help. just sayin

how is booting and shutting down being handled in a car setup? i am considering a car pc for my truck, but dont want to have to wait for it to boot to have music and then shut it down every time i turn the truck off. i considered SSD drives for the quick booting, but that would still be far from a standard head unit startup time.

i have a 90 silverado. there is no room at all in the dash for even a single din head unit. my ideal end result is mounting a headunit or pc under the seat and having a small touch screen mounted above the climate controls to control everything. i would like to play music from a thumb drive for sure and a HD if i go pc route. if there is something out there that is more like a standard car stereo im fine with that, but in all of my research it looks like i will have to use a pc. every touch screen head unit i can find has the screen permanently attached to the unit and not remote mounted.

Would i be able to run an 8awg wire from the capacitor's positive lead to my car PC to power it or will i still have to run a new cable for power and ground? I will be using the M2-ATX-HV 140W PSU for this build.

I've been searching the forum all day (especially the noob forums) but haven't had any luck yet.

What I've got:

2 Headrests with LCDs - each with 2 RCA "video in"s

Factory Nav with RCA "video out" currently hooked to one of the LCD "video in"s

Issue:
When I'm not playing a DVD the LCDs display "no signal" (or are black if I turn them off). What would be nice is I could keep the LCDs on the other video input (when not playing DVDs) and have them display a winAmp-ish visualization based on the music being played. As for the visualization audio source, my Nav has additional RCA audio outs which I have tested and think it would be a good source (even if I needed to convert it to 3.5mm headphone jack depending on what is needed.).

My hesitation with a whole "carputer" setup is that my factory Nav system has everything I need (audio-wise) already (Bluetooth audio, CD, MP3, iPod, HD radio, aux video in, etc.)

Honestly I was surprised when I googled yesterday to not find a device or easy solution that takes an audio source and outputs a visualization to a video out. I downloaded a $0.99 visualization app on my iPhone and was able to use the video out cable to display the visualization on my headrest monitors. This is not a viable option because I don't have a spare iPhone 4 around.

Any thoughts or ideas for any inexpensive device that would do this (if one exists) or some kind of direction short of an entire carputer would be greatly appreciated.

For quite a few years now I have wanted an in-car PC, through the cars I have had money etc. Finally i'm going to do it, all be it in an S40 which isn't ideal.

So my first problem is where to put a screen in-dash or motorized, bearing in mind I wanted everything to look as neat as possible and also the fact that I lack any experience in any fabrication or mechanical stuff. The best option that I have come up with was to mount a Lilliput 7" touchscreen on top of the dash, and drill a hole in the dash to run cables to and from the screen. Having decided on the screen to use, next question was how to mount it? I decided to get a Lilliput mounted in a ByByte holder, then stainless or brushed steel can be used to create the enclosure around it which will compliment the rest of the interior of the car.

I'm thinking that the best place for the dash is on top of the dash, above the air vents. I'm sure how to attach the enclosure maybe to linear slots cut for the side of enclosure to slot in to or some sticky velcro some how?

Next thing is where to put the motherboard / PC itself? My most preferred location is behind the centre console as there is some space although not lots, airflow available, install is all up front on the car. Under the seats is not an option, as there seems to be other things there along with air vents. There could be space in the glove box although i'm not sure how I would get airflow in there, and would make a mess with cabling. As for the boot, I think it would be a nightmare to run everything to the boot and back up again. Don't know if anybody has any advice on this one?

Thanks

I've been lurking for the better part of 2 months so far. I'm finding a lot of old information and not so much recent history for the car pc builds. My research is ongoing and before I take the plunge into building a nice high powered for my truck, I'd like to make my way in to the game with what I have if at all possible. I've got a lenovo ideacentre Q150 with an Intel Atom dual core 1.66 processor and a 250 gig hard drive for starters. I can't find anything on the forum about these types of computers in the car pc world and I'd like to know if the automatic hybernation and resume would be possible on one of these. I'm also going to list other obstacles I'm working on below. This project will be going into a 2011 F250. I realize there are a lot of nice options out there for head units with nav, but I really enjoy challenging projects and would like to get programs like dashcommand for real time OBD2 diagnostics. I'm thinking I can get a nice rig for the same price if not less than a high end double din nav unit. Here we go.

Hardware/Software

Computer- Lenovo Ideacentre Q150? will it work?
Monitor- Initially starting with a 15" that I have laying around so I don't have to make dash mods just yet. Will go to an 8" touchscreen if everything works out.
Steering wheel control integration- Joycon EX Steering Wheel Control PC Interface (still researching but I think this is the ticket)
Front end- I don't have any preference but I've downloaded riderunner and have been toying with it. I really like the Elite series of skins but I keep crashing it as of now.
Navigation software- I'd love to use iGuidance for ease of embedding but it has been discontinued. I'm leaning towards copilot now but trying to make sure it will embed (good) in to RR before I go to far. Map updates are important to me as I live in Houston.
Sound- This will be replacing my head unit. I'll have to split my audio into two amps. One for my door speakers and one for my subs. Will be using a usb sound card (still researching the split for 2 amps)
Wifi- another reason I like the ideacentre. wifi is built in. I should be able to broadcast from my phone with the new share everything plan from Verizon (legally that is).
HD radio- Is a must. Doesn't look to hard to integrate into any FE. Still looking into it but this is a low level considering other obstacles I have to overcome.
DVD- Nice to have but not needed. Very low on my list.
CD player- Haven't played a CD in years. This is not needed.

Wish list

I'd love to remove the HVAC controls and control the A/C and heating from the car pc but I know that will take me forever to accomplish. If I removed the HVAC controls, I could have 2 monitors.

If all goes well, I'll be building an I3 system with a SSD and nice sized hard drive. Im thinking that I can dive into this for the cost of the Nav software and possible DC-DC power supply in the beginning and test and tune before I start spending the big bucks.

Of the fuse locations listed, what would be a "true ignition" source? I'm assuming that is just a 12V ignition line...i'm guessing the radio would be ok for that, or the ignition coil? What is the smartest fuse location to use?

Hi everyone,

I'm Segun, and I'm an automotive designer/engineer. I have a bit of experience fitting the odd stereo system, car security, and such, but my forte is in design development, and mechanical engineering.

So my team and I are building a prototype sports car, and I'd like to put a car pc in it. There are a number of things I'd like to be able to do, but as I haven't previously been an electronics customization expert, I don't know where to start. I'll just give an overview of features I'd like to incorporate, and I'll be most grateful if I could get some help:

- Automatic power-up on ignition
- Motorised pop up from Dash
- Customizable splash screen
- FM & Digital Radio
- iPod/iPad Connectivity
- USB & AUX input
- 3 x Pre-outs to Amplifier for surround sound
- 3G Capability
- Google Maps
- Bluetooth Hands-free for telephone

Now, I think we can figure out the automatic power up, motorized pop up, and the custom splash screen pretty easily. What I'm not too sure of is how easy it is to get the remaining features in one system. Then, what OS? windows? Android? We don't really want to go for a DIN fitment, because I think they're just boring, so the dash has been designed without one, but it incorporates a pop up screen.

So, I wonder if you could help me with some advice, and when the project goes live, tech help if necessary.

Cheers!

Hi forum

I have just baught a used car, with it came a pretty decent stereo a Blaupunkt Los Angeles MP71

according to the instructions manual it is possible to connect external sources like cd-changer,mp3 etc. I have bought a standard Mini-iso to mini-jack, and plugged it in the line-in on the back.

I have been using my phone like a source in my former car, with another stereo that had Mini-jack on the front, and there it sounded pretty normal but on my blaupunkt it sounds really distorted and very low. i have been searching for a andriod amplifier, for use with car stereo without luck.

so do any of you, know a way i can fix this?

I've always dreamed of a car computer, but was put off with the amount of work to get something up and running. With the announcement of the nexus 7, things are getting way too easy to pass this up now. :)

I have a Garmin voice recognition GPS and a alpine ex-10 right now, and it is actually quite a nice setup. Despite the **** reviews for the ex-10, it works wonders for me. I get great iPod control, and the audio over bluetooth allows me to stream stuff from google music or even soundcloud and it works wonderfully. Pauses when I get a phone call, sound quality is great, etc.

I guess I'm ready to get everything in one package though. Having the GPS call out my turns over my music would be a nice addition. Plus the 3d maps from google would be a nice touch.

The nexus 7 looks like the perfect fit for the money. The only glaring hole for me is the ability to hook up an iPod for massive, offline storage. My searches online were futile. I briefly looked through the forums here, but I couldn't find anything like this.

Is this just another pipe dream for me? Any other ideas for music management? Maybe just an external drive would be ok, but I would probably miss the management of the library via iTunes. (although, then again, iTunes has been getting pretty lame over the past few years... maybe it wouldn't be so bad to drop it altogether)

Thanks for hearing me out.

I have spent the last few days looking around at (or I should say, for) single DIN head units with LCDs, or any kind of ultra widescreen...

I have spent the last few days looking around at (or I should say, for) single DIN head units with LCDs, or any kind of ultra widescreen LCD/touchscreen module that I could fit into my single DIN hole as the head of a carputer and I cannot find *anything*. The closest thing is the AVX55/AVX77.

This surprises me. I would have thought there'd be lots of people out there interested in a mechless single din monitor. The advantages over a flip out being:

* Keeps the stock look of the car / looks *awesome* (just imagine having a small, sleek glass slab in the centre of the dash that suddenly comes to life with an Android logo with the ignition)
* Less to go wrong
* Much cheaper (if they existed...)

The screen would be too small for 'proper' sat-nav but devices like those from Garmin or TomTom get away with the same amount of vertical space so its not like a carputer with this monitor could not do anything one with a full size one could.

Is there a reason no-one is interested in them? Or is there a lot of interest, just not enough to justify the cost of a highly specialised form factor LCD?

I've been lurking on here for the past few weeks, and i have finally decided to take the plunge. i went out and purchased a gently used system. i got a 1.6 ghz intel atom it came with fm, sirius, gps, and the monitor. i need help with a few things though. i already have a mono amp with four gauge wire so i plan to run that 4g to a distrubution block down to 8 ga and run my pc 4ch amp and my mono. how do i connect the 8 ga to the wire on the pc. its only 14 or so. also for my acc wire i will need 3. i have found that im going to need to use a relay. how do i get 3 wires off of a relay? and finally my last question it came with a lilliput screen but unfortunitly i have a single din and at first i thought i would be able to modify it so it would sit out of the din similar to aftermarket headunits but im not sure if i will be able to. has anyone here used the xenarc 700idt? are there any other vga touchscreen one din models out there? thank you for all the information you guys have already provided me i look forward to having this up and running

i do apologize for the poorly written post

So I'm finally realizing a long dream I have had to build a Car PC. Well thanks to my work, I have an Intel DN2800MT mounted in a microATX chassis with a 32GB SSD. I have added Wi-Fi and bluetooth so far. System is a 1.8Ghz Dual core ATOM with 4GB of RAM.
No monitor yet, and I haven't started to install as I want all the pieces to the puzzle first, and thanks to a custody battle for my son, this will have to come slow. I plan to install this in my 01 Mercury cougar within the next year. A few questions I have though...

1.) What is the best FREE Front end to use?
2.) What kind of FM tuner should I get? I want it to integrate internal as this will replace my cars audio system altogether.
3.) Best 8" touchscreen that will have good day/night resolution and visibility
4.) Since this board s already set-up to use a 12V ac adapter, Power should be easy, but what are my options for a shutdown controller?

Sorry, I have a lot of problems getting on the site most days, and I try to search and look through. I find users personal opinions easier to take though.

But I need to find a way to add a relay to it, So when my cell phone is in range of the paired BT, it activates a circuit. It must still be able to play stereo audio and make and receive phone calls. I would also like to be able to change the passcode for secuirty purposes. Is there a way to do this or am I asking for to much?

hello, im new to this car audio but i have a question. i understand that typically the bigger the subwoofers the louder the boom. however ive come to realize that this is not true. in my case i had a blow the box in my pick up with 4 jbl 12"s and these made my ears beep.... these where stolen from me when the truck was towed. so i decided to install some better/ bigger/ heavier 12" with the same amp and box, but for some reason the smaller less expensive 12s i had before pounded WAY harder... could the be a wiring mistake? i know my 1500watt mtx amp should move them enough? any comments would help:lock1:

I have a Van and I was thinking about running the power line under the car because the plastic pieces on the side really don't have much room under them. I know this is a bad idea in most peoples minds but what do you think of this idea...

A PVC pipe ran under the the body to protect the wire...maybe even a metal pipe around that plastic PVC to protect it even more...
Yes, I am very interested in mitchjs' opinion on what is the best usb hd radio for obvious reasons but I welcome all opinions.
Sorry about all the links, I don't know how to implant them into regular text.

Anyways a few years ago I made a stereo in an ice chest using some old 6x9s and a Head Unit from my car, and I powered it with a lawnmower battery. But, the ice chest was too small and the casing I had the stereo in got wet and it died. So now I want to use a bigger ice chest, mount the speakers at the top of the sides instead of on top of the lid, and not use a head unit. My understanding is that I will have an mp3 player > amp (via 3.5mm to RCA cable) > speakers. Is this correct, and with these speakers what amp should I get?

The speakers each have 4 ohms, and a 20 RMS limit, the subwoofer has 4 ohms and a 50-200 RMS limit. I have never used an amp before so are there any suggestions as to what brand and kind I should use? Please keep in mind that I want to mount it preferably inside the ice chest and the depth of the speakers is already taking up some volume. Thanks.

1. When using Hybernation/Hybrid Sleep with Win7 and SSD does the hybernation file get created each time the PC is shutdown? Can this be avoided? Will this reduce the life of the SSD?
But the big question is... I want to test this in the house so I know I need a power adapter...but the m2 atx power supply only has 3 wires connected red, white and black...the rest are not being utilized and have no idea why or where to hook what in the car.

Again, sorry for the noobness any help is greatly appreciated... right now I only have help from:

I am planning a new build in my 2008 ram 1500. I will construct everything in the center "contraban" hiding spot under the front center seat. At this time I will not be upgrading any audio components, but will be running the sound into the stock head unit via the aux input.

Here are the planned parts:

Asrock extreme3 gen3 full atx mobo
intel i5-i2500k Processor (95w)
100g intel ssd with windows 7
8g gskill sniper ddr3
Asus dvd multi optical drive
2 fans (have various, will use based on best fit and air flow)

^^^want to reuse these because I own them already

M4 Atx power supply
12" lillput in the dash (constructed to cover but not replace the head unit)
unknown gps
unknown bluetooth
28mm backup camera
wifi pci board

My concern is the mobo and processor. my various searches have not revealed anyone else using full ATX board or the i2500 cpu for their carputer. I think I will be under the max wattage and I am hopeful that my alternator can keep up. I have moderate computer building skills and have installed many car sound systems.

Looking forward to getting started! Thanks for any input!

idea for auto startup/shutdown controller

So I'm almost ready to start ordering the pieces to get my build underway, and I started contemplating on a startup/shutdown controller. Since we are dealing with a boot time on a carpc, it would be awesome to have the computer start to boot up maybe 10-15 seconds at least before I even get into the truck. I've seen the remote systems that you have to latch a remote to your key ring, install the receiver into the car, wire it in, and all that jazz, but then I started thinking about how that could be bypassed and basically make use of the existing keyless entry system on a car/truck. I came up with an idea that I'd like to run by you guys.

Basically, take a standard shutdown controller such as uSDC20D. Here's where my idea comes into play though. It involves using two diodes and a feed from the factory door locks. Basically as follows:

Basically you'd wire it like normal only with a diode in line with the switching ignition signal wire, and you'd also tap into the factory door lock wiring and pull the +12v that occurs when the doors are unlocked (since most if not all cars simply reverse the polarity on the door lock actuators in order to lock or unlock), and then wire it in also with a diode into the same input. Then set the shut down controller to keep the computer running for at least a minute or so after the input goes away. In theory, this would trick it into powering up the PC when you unlock the doors via a factory keyless entry system, and as long as you turn the ignition on within a minute (or however long you desire to set the auto shutdown time at), the computer would stay up and running. This way the computer would already be half way booted up, if not all the way booted by the time you get the engine started, maybe even before you sit down in the driver's seat!

The only complication I see in it right now (and it may not even be an issue) is feed back between the two inputs if the ignition is on and sending +12v to the input, and the doors are locked which would then be grounding out the other input. The diodes are in place to keep +12v from feeding from one source to the other, but I'm not sure how they would fair keeping +12v away from ground; it may work fine or it might just send the diode up in a puff of smoke, lol. BUT, that's why I'm asking this here first :) I guess another option I would have is instead of using a door lock input which reverses between lock and unlock, I could use the running lights or turn signal +12v as the momentary input, since they flash when unlocking the car. The only thing with that is then it would cause unwanted booting every time I so much as lock the doors, and that is sometimes 10-15 minutes after I get out of the truck. It may not be that big of a problem for that to happen though.

Now I can't be the only person who's ever though of this, but if I am I'll be very surprised, and I'd like to know what you guy's thoughts are on it. Look simple enough to work?

Hi there - Newbie here.

I own a Laguna II Sports Tourer Navigation (registered in 2007) and would like to be able to plug an MP3 player (iPod or similar) into my car radio (actually, in the fullness of time, I would like to plug a RaspberryPi (http://www.raspberrypi.org/) into it - but one step at a time).

I don't want to use an FM Transmitter System because it will stop the SatNav getting traffic data, so I am looking for a solution which allows me to use an Aux Input of some kind.

I have done LOTS of research, but there seem to be so many different versions of the Carminat system that it is almost impossible for me to tell what is the right model and if I am going to damage my head unit by trying something.

Attached are a couple of photos, one of the back of the head-unit and the other of the front (sorry, the second photo is a bit blurred).

From the research I have done, I believe that this website might be helpful (http://cablerenault.wordpress.com/), however, when I check in the expert menu on the radio, the Aux option is not available and this leads me to think that this radio does not have an Aux input! If this is the case, what is the best option to get an input. Could it be possible to fool the radio into thinking a CD Changer is connected and then connect an SPDIF device to it? I have found this site: http://tlcdcemu.sourceforge.net/hardware.html but I can't work out if it is valid for my head-unit or not (I don't want to bother with any of the control simulation, just simply get myself a mechanism to get music into the radio. Any thoughts?

Regarding interfacing with the Raspberry Pi with the SatNav display (to run XBMC), the Raspberry Pi outputs via HDMI and does not have a RGB output. Therefore, I will need to get a suitable device which will convert HDMI to RGB, and then have a switchbox so that I can select between the Pi and the Carminat using the pinouts from here: http://www.planeterenault.com/forum/...-2-t38078.html (I should be able to get a switchbox and converter with a DC power supply off the shelf without too much problem). Does this plan seem utterly bonkers, or is it quite do-able. Are there other and better option that I could investigate to achieve something like this?

Thanks

Hi guys! This is my first post, but I've been sort of lurking in the shadows for a while ever since I decided to add a PC to my truck.

Anyway, I've got most of my hardware, and I've run into a little problem putting it all together. I have the VoomPC2 enclosure, this motherboard, and a Crucial 2.5" SSD. My problem is that the VoomPC2 assumes that the ATX connector on the motherboard will not be near the front of the case, and unfortunately it is in that exact location on my motherboard. Because of this I can't access the SATA connections on my drive unless I turn it around backward and run the cables out the CD Drive slot. This isn't a problem in testing, but I'd like my final build to look atleast sort of barely decent. :)

I there anyway I can mount the drive in a different way without just drilling new holes in the Voom bracket? I won't mind doing that, but I thought I'd check first.

Anyway, Thanks for any help!

Hey,

I have found plenty of information on what type of battery to use as a secondary battery for a car audio system, but I would like to know what would be a good one to use for the primary battery. I am looking for ~$100 for something that will be able to handle the basic necessities of the car really well. What I plan on doing is ordering a secondary battery for the rest of my audio/pc equipment but I want to make sure the primary battery is solid first. I am willing to spend a little more if necessary, but I just want to make sure I buy something that is good. Any suggestions would be helpful but a link would be even more helpful!

I've been considering building a car pc for a long time now.. but for some reason I'm just having so much trouble getting started. I can build the computer, that's not really an issue.. what I'm having trouble with is the chassis/dash kit/bezel.

Is there anything out there that will let me use a standard touch screen and also offer an array of standard physical buttons (forward/back/volume/etc)? I'm not a fan of touch screen while driving, as it's difficult to get proper finger placement on the screen when you're bouncing up and down on the road .. I much prefer real buttons and knobs for basic tasks. I would also like to have front AUX input, perhaps even HDMI input on the front. I suppose these hookups could be located elsewhere, so that's not terribly important, but would be nice.

What I'm really struggling with is finding a chassis and front bezel that suits my needs. Can anyone help with this? My car has a double-din opening.

I'm looking at the Lilliput 669GL, which has all the buttons I want.. but all the bezels I'm finding seem to remove the buttons and only house the display (like this one).

I have a quick question that I am currently debating in my head. I have a Y Cable which is obviously going to provide a better audio but looking to use A2DP or aux in. I am thinking of buying the Belkin AirCast Auto which streams A2DP audio from phone and plugs into the Aux In port.

Am I better (quality wise) using the Aircast to stream music through A2DP to aux in or using a wired Aux in connection to my iPhone?

I would naturally say the aux in is going to provide better quality but A2DP would provide an easier install.
My main question is... How do you find which wires on the Apple TV power supply unit output positive and negative? I am thinking that I could use a multimeter or testlight but I don't know if that would cause either the testers or the PSU to burn out. I am trying to install mine on a boat and have a projector connected to it. Right now I use an inverter, and that consumes 8 amps (inverter) + 17 amps (Apple TV after conversion). the actual draw is 1.75 amps from the apple tv but the rule of thumb when converting from ac to DC amps is you multiply the AC amps by 10. This is bad for my boat as my battery only supplies 125 Amp hours, and my solar panels only put in 5 amps on a sunny day. I'm not really looking for an easy way out, I like learning how to do things. But the easy way is welcomed if you have one though! :)

I am new here, so thanks to anyone who helps me out. I have been researching this for a while and am I little unsure how to proceed.

My ultimate goal is this:
Have a touchscreen mounted in my car with a custom GUI that I will design to control lights inside and outside the car

There are a few ways to do this that I am aware of.
1. Put a computer in the car, write an application that controls USB relays. (seems like overkill)
2. Put in a custom android device that runs a custom app that in turn controls an Arduino with relays attached (seems overly complicated)

I can't just use an Arduino because that is not powerful enough to support a large (above 5") touchscreen.
Has anon here used android to control some relays or have any other way of computerizing relays?

Thanks!

I have a 1989 Volkswagen Jetta GLI Wolfburg "Helios" Edition, there are only 1500 of them made and it was never released in my country so I had to import it. Ive had it for about 4 years now and have never taken it out on the road yet because of my fear to damage, theft, or the magical flying doors we so frequently find in parking lots. So my solution is to completely over kill my car with security hardware.

I'm thinking front and rear bumper cams, and oppsite facing front and rear interior cams (dash cam faces rear window, rear window cam faces the dash), as well as a bunch of general security items like an alarm, tinting my windows, gps anti theft tracking, as well as remote ignition kill.

I wanna do a three monitor carputer using a small Linux box, touch screen main monitor up front and dual cloned monitors for the back. What kind of hardware should I be looking at to have all of these working on one Linux based pc?

I need four wide angle cameras, gps tracking, and signal/speed monitoring. So while I'm driving for legal reasons I want proof of my speed and correct signal use logged on the computer incase an accident happens at someone else's fault I want to have all evidence I was driving legally.

The main concern for that is because my friend was driving his RSX Type-S and some girl in a ****ty falling apart Mustang thought it was funny to keep bumping his rear bumper until he had to stop and she didn't, after the police arrived they let her off because he was able to drive home safely as the damage wasn't too bad, a few days later she totaled her car hitting someone else! So if I run into someone like this I want proof of how irrisponcible some of the drivers are so these people are never around my car again.

I've seen accelerometer programs in racing videos on YouTube that also show their foot petal control usage and I would like something like this for my car. Cost is not an issue as this car can NOT be replaced if anything happened.

Hi all,

I'm a newb, so I'm posting in the newb section. Please move my post if there is a more appropriate section for my query.

I would like to build a computer to log as much information about all my car journeys as I can, starting with video from a front and rear camera. In time I can look to expanding this to include GPS information, info from the OBD2 port and, well, anything else.

I've searched the web and the forums and I haven't found any current information on where to start with this. All the prebuilt systems for this are out of my price range.

Is there anyone here who has done something similar?

Thanks all,

Now that I got my cheap knock off Elm working, itwon't take the commands I'm trying to send it via Realterm. I can view data using the Scantool.net program but when I try to send commands via the terminal it just responds with a question mark every time. I downloaded the documentation from Elmelctronics.com and believe I am using the proper format using AT commands to address the device. Maybe whatever chip is inside the tool doesn't support the Elm commands. Any ideas? Thanks again.

I am currently working on a system to put in my truck and wanted to ask for some advice.

So far everything is on paper or being tested on my laptop not actually being done so I did not want to list it in the projects page yet.

First the problems that I have seen that need to be overcome

1. Power up time. Trucks operate 10 to 14 hours a day, This doesnt include time that I may be using the system on break, so the unit will have to be able to withstand being turned on for long peroids of time, both in being able to cool itself and being able to dump memory when needed to ram is not jammed up.
2. Vibration and enviroment, These trucks can be as bad as an bronco, Jobsite roads, pot holes and dirt, Moist air and more all will be a factor to deal with. Also to be blunt as to keyboards and such is dirty hands and such.
3. Visabililty and Legal issues, Daylight Visability with Autodim and other features will need to be a must.

There are more and I will be listing them when I can Got to Go my off time is ended
