I know Xport is not designed to run on 64 bit systems but is there any other way to get the GPS info embedded onto the video?
Also anyone using a MS LifeCam Studio with this app? What settings are you using? Specifically, the compression settings.

So I picked up a new SSD for my Win8 install and found some useful tips I thought I'd share. I bought an upgrade disc for 30 bucks on black Friday, but you can still get them for pretty cheap. I really wanted a clean install though. Why start shoving XP onto my SSD just to never use it?

I got some good tips on the walk through here. The laptop I'm using had a defective optical drive so I created a Win8 Install USB flash drive that worked great.
http://pcsupport.about.com/od/window...all-part-1.htm

Anyways, the key that I really wanted to share was about Microsoft's support. When I got all the way done with the install and into the OS the activation didn't work. It knew I only had an upgrade disc, not one licensed for a clean install.

I called Microsoft's support line fingers crossed, but expecting to have to start over and do the XP install first. Turns out they don't care. I told them my XP install wasn't stable (which was true) so I installed clean on a new drive. He walked me through a couple of steps to let him load an activation utility from his end onto my computer and I'm good to go.

One of the best little items to share though is that he didn't require I prove any of it. I didn't have to give him my XP serial to prove I had a legitimate copy (which I did).

Hi all

is there any software out there that can "split" or provide control to what sounds are played by onboard sound / speaker and what is played by proper sound card output ?

what I am finding is all sounds are channeled out via the main sound card as seen in control panel - be it usb sound card or onboard sound
I would like to be able to choose (maybe radio button yes / no ) where what sound is handled - output from media player via sound card = yes cause thats tied to my amps and then maybe incoming phone call ring is handled by usb - or at least the flexibility to control this
os is windows 7 but i am sure all versions of windows have this "challenge"

any help or links will be appreciated

Well, is this year finally?

Well, is this year finally?
Android has made a huge impact, car manufacturers have taken what lots of you all pioneered, and pioneer's appradio might finally be getting some footing, win8 might be a reasonable alternative, I can go on but you all know what I'm talking about anyway :)

Once again, I'm gonna bring up an old idea And topic.

I was just reading about sailfish again and I keep thinking that we are just barking up too many different trees. Sure each one of us has different priorities and needs and sure there is a huge "do it yourself" mentality here but I keep coming across post by people that make me think that something needs to be changed.

Tablets are so close to what many people who work on limited budgets and tech skills almost make the carpc possible, but tablets are limited just enough that a PC is still the option.

However in the same sense a PC is just too much work to get most people over the hump. Lets not forget that the underlying OS is something that we must live with for certain pieces of hardware that most of us want ... Ugh ....

Back to Sailfish (meego) and I'll even throw in webos and android (sorry iOS my love, you just don't cut it).

That is 3 pretty decent OS / app pieces of software when you think of it. So what?

Think about it, a major reason why windows has us tied down is because of some simple pieces of hardware that most of us want: obd, GPS, radar, hands free, tire pressure sensors or what not. Really not much, but game killers.

I was hoping Meego would be the we go solution but well not.

WebOS is finally going opensource and meego is born again as sailfish.

Ok, the point is that I really finally think its the time the community started raising their voices in a unified choice. We want a solution to our needs. So I really think its time that we either pick one of these OSes and do something or push for something that works for us.

I don't want to fall back into windows, I want to have even android running my stuff from the beginning. This means that the OS is relatively already the core of the carpc rather than a front end that sits on top of the OS.

Obviously, obd and Bluetooth are the major spoilers to our fun but why? Because its easier to for a company to just update their software that already works? Obviously yes but what would happen if we started unifying our voice? Get mp3car known to bloggers and what not? Would we still be such a minority? Could we all not stand behind mp3car when they talk to hardware manufacturers in China?

To be honest I really don't see webos or sailfish really gaining more share than win8 in most of the industrialized world but I could see how our special needs could help them.

As for the Chinese factories, I also seem them going more and more android over winCE which means that we would provide them with an excellent back ground of knowledge and usage experience that the sorely need.

Sailfish or webos I can imagine be willing to listen to what we have to say, while android I think could be ported or at least skinned like so many phone manufacturers have done already. Hmmm, maybe HTC might be interested.

The only real missing piece to the puzzle is coming up with attractive and sexy skins, yes, I've seen some really good ones here but I'm thinking some more industrial based that most people are used to on their phones or tablets.

Hurdles to overcome?
Number 1 is our community, which I'm sure is possible since most of us want a solid OS that works in the car and tht is extensible for what ever we can think up!

Number 2 is getting something that works, do we really care if we us a different OS than normally? I don't since I use windows in my car out of hardware necessity. I would be just as willing to go android in my car even though I have an iPhone!

Number 3 is getting the drivers working for the varies hardware that we want. It's really sad to see some of the great ideas here go barren because it was just too much work. I can really see lots of manufacturers open up code if there are going to be sales and if we petition them enough. I can even see Palmer jumping on board if there seems to be enough traction for them to make more sales.

Number 4, apathy, yep, we really need to be seen as a community rather than as a few individuals wanting 1 off items. If we had mp3car approaching some of these companies our voice will be even that much stronger.

Anyway, I'm just thinking that we can make a difference and at the same time finally getting our hands on a OS - front end that really works.

I was wandering. is there a way , to start a pc remotely in the car?
i'm corrently doing so, by using the car alarm aux outpout, but its limited to the 1 mile or so (max for car alarms)
Wake on Lan would work well, but only problem is you dont have an internet connection in the car >_>
I was thinking , if a broadband modem would work, but then again, this has to have the computer running, to be connected...
sending a message to a pager and then having it control some relays??? i'm talking about any scenario...

The reason i want to do it, is becouse, if you can remote start your pc from distance, you could do many thinks, like ,
1) if the car alarm pager sends you a message, you could open the pc, and via a i.p camera, see if there is an actual thread
2)Remote start the car ofc.
3)have the computer do a sequance of tasks, when woken that way (again to protect from thiefs)
and whatever some one could think!

I am also forced to stick with wmp12 and windows 8 and not any other front end, cause of the great voice integration that wmp has.
so to my point. almost all ( :( ) other media players (even my android phone >_> ), have the ability to change the equalizer presets , based on the genre tag, this is very useful, if you have lots of different genres in your library...
so my question is, does anyone know, a good, stand alone equalizer software that could do that?

So I'm just about ready to start putting the final pieces of my first setup into a car and am at a crossroads.

I'm loving some of the stuff I'm seeing with people playing with Windows 8, but am not ready to jump head first into relying on it as my front end or spend the cash on the 10.1 multi-touch screen just yet.

So lets say I end up using RR or one of the other options, is there any significant reason not to get Windows 8? The cost for both options new is the same, and for the sake of the future I'd like to not have to waste the money on an upgrade if I don't need to.
So what do you guys think?

I’m wondering what others are getting with boot times under Win8 and the newer UEFI Bios MB’s.

I’m currently running Win8-64 bit and playing with a Gigabyte GA-Z77N-WIFI Mini-ITX MB that I'm building into a small SilverStone SG07 case for my Desktop PC. I’m using a single slow 2GB memory chip, an i3-2120 and a slower 60GB Corsair SSD which were left over from an older failed system. I have new ram on the way, but the system is fast enough for what I do running the i3 and the SSD’s that have a through put that tops out at around 280 MB/ Sec. Silverstone case comes with a special 600W supply and the complete system is virtually silent.

Anyway boot time from a push of the power switch to the Desktop with music playing is around 12 seconds (default Bios UEFI settings at the moment). That’s with lots of installed applications and a second slow SSD added along with an old 500 GB HDD for backup space and Media files. It’s only slightly longer after a restart which bypasses Win8 fast start image. The big difference between this and the car PC is the Bios initialisation time. The Car PC has a faster SSD and loads Win-7 in a few seconds once the POST is finished. So this is around 10 seconds faster than the Car PC.

I have played with the Beta releases of Win8 and random lockups plagued the early release. This New version has been 100% stable once I removed a certain Antivirus application that causes random memory errors at idle (should have looked it up on the net first, lots of complaints).

With the MB, Win-8 installed all the necessary drivers itself, just as well as the Supplied install DISK will not run in Win8 and nether will any of the drivers or apps. However Gigabyte has released Sound, Graphic and BT drivers for Win-8 so everything is running perfect.

So wondering what others have found with MB’s and systems.

I have been testing Windows 8 in my CarPC and it looks like it has some serious potential, it pretty much removes the need for a frontend.
However I have found that it needs a little tweaking and work to adapt it to the carpc environment.

I will post here the problems i have and how to solve them, if possible.
If someone posts a solution for some problem in this thread i will update this first post to reflect it.

Maybe we can all make this thread a useful resource for people wishing to migrate to windows 8.

EGalax Touch Screen behaves like a Mouse instead of a touch panel
I have this problem with my screen it's a 7" transflective from cartft.com, it uses an egalax touchscreen.
when the touch panel behaves like a mouse you can't swipe the tiles on the start screen, and when you touch on a text input the touch keyboard does not comes out automatically, and so on...
I have found a solution for windows 8 32 bit only, you have to install this drivers:
ftp://support.archos.com/Archos%209/...00115_Beta.zip

For 64 bits there is no solution AFAIK.

With the release of W8 upgrade at only $40 and the quick boot times I have experienced along with stable operation, I think this is a great option...

With the release of W8 upgrade at only $40 and the quick boot times I have experienced along with stable operation, I think this is a great option for the CarPC. I am also going to upgrade my media PC in the living room. Both have licensed versions of XP Pro, the carPC is an OEM on the laptop, the other a Home built with a purchased version.

My concern was would I have to have the previous OS installed to use this upgrade so I contacted MS via chat and here is what I am being told:

You can download the 3G upgrade, install it directly from the file or burn a disc, install it and just use your COA number from your original XP install to validate it. He sounded slightly unsure of this using expressions like "I believe" but I am going to give it a shot and see. If he is correct, this is a low cost easy way to upgrade from XP,Vista using a clean hard drive which is what I was looking for.

I'll go ahead and try this and post here how it went unless someone else has already done it and can confirm right away.

Here is the chat log if anyone is interested:

Thank you for choosing Microsoft Store. An Answer Tech will be with you shortly.
Privacy Statement
You are now chatting with 'Terry'.
Hello Terry: Hello Terry
Terry: Thanks for contacting Microsoft Store Chat! How can I help you today?
Hello Terry: I want to upgrade two PC's to W8. I'll start with the first one. It's an HP laptop that I broke the screen on so I now use it as a carPC permanently conencted in my vehicle to a touch screen in the dash. The original HD has the image from HP on it with XP pro. I replaced the HD and have been running various releases of W8 over the last year. So there are no traces of XP on it. I have the original drive stored and working but I do not want to run it. How do I upgrade the newer drive?
Terry: I'd be happy to help you with that today!
Terry: Just a moment while I look into that for you.
Terry: OK you can upgrade from the release preview.
Hello Terry: Thats whats on it now so the upgrade will work with no further changes to the drive?
Terry: Yes
Hello Terry: Wow, that's a bit of a loophole on the whole "upgrade" deal seeing as release preview is free but that works for me. That also solves my problem on my living room media PC as I have a retail licensed version of XP with disc for it but formatted and ran W8 as well. So what happens a year later when I want to format one of these machines and re install everything? What will I need to get the upgrade to install again?
Terry: I beleive it will require your product key form the previous version of windows you had to confirm youhad windows.
Hello Terry: Well then I could do that this time right? The serial for XP is on the bottom of the laptop and I have to COA for the XP disc I bought for the LR PC. So I can format both these machines again and start fresh with this upgrade, correct?
Terry: Yes that should be all you need
Hello Terry: Perfect, I like fresh installs! Have a great day.
Terry: The downloaded will make this all clear to you as you go thru the upgrade process.
Hello Terry: Excellent, thank you.
Terry: Is there anything else I can assist you with today?
Hello Terry: Just 2 more quick questions: what size is the download and is it an ISO I must burn to a DVD like the preview versions?
Terry: It is around a 3 gb file and it will give you the option to create a disk but can be just downloaded.
Hello Terry: Great,thank you. Bye

Hello,
for my needs I have developed a video player that plays in the background for my tablet
I developed this application for the playback of music videos and only if it serves will show the video.
I have also developed the ability to perform random playback, also through gesture on the sides of the screen in video mode.
I translated into Italian (my language), English, French, Spanish and German.
I think then will the ability to resume the last video left off.
The program is fine with version 2.3 of Android or more.
I tested it with a Motorola pro + 2.3.6 and a tablet galaxy tab2 7.0
If you want to try it you can download it for free here,
If you have any problems let me know that I see to fix it.
regards,

I have tried to connect an OBD2 ELM327 adapter in Mercedes Atego. Somehow I managed to get it in that OBD2 connector. I can see that my adapter is receiving electricity. These are the PID's that I can read with this adapter: OBD PID's. But as I thought these PID's are not working in the mercedes atego.

Is there anyone that has a list of the codes that are able to give me a live data?

I can see that my obd2 adapter is fetching data as I can see the yellow lights blinking. But no success with the code reading.

I tried several forums and a lot of manufacturers but noone has those codes. Everyone is giving me a link to buy a new OBD2 adapter with their protocol. Maybe I need to change pin's?

But I am a programmer and I am making my own program for reading this live data.

Hey,

Wasn't sure where exactly to put this thread or what to title it but hopefully the right people find it. I am trying to find software (or the proper way to code something myself) so that when the GPS software on my carPC gives an audible direction, every other volume source (music, video, etc) is either muted or lowered. I would just like to know if there is already a solution that exists for this and if not, how I might go about creating one. Let me know if that makes sense as it would be really cool to implement this. I know I have seen it in OEM nav units so imagine it is theoretically possible.

BTW I am using Windows XP and two specific programs I want to control are iGo8 (navigation) and Windows Media Player (music) but I figure a solution should work for any software really.

Hey,

Is it just me or is it becoming increasingly difficult to find a Front End that is both up-to-date and functional? By this I mean that I have resorted to just using all separate programs within a Windows operating space because nothing seems to work right in Front-End software. My issue is that Centrafuse Apps are so poorly rated so it makes me reluctant to jump on that boat. RoadRunner (or RideRunner rather) is complicated and I haven't quite figured that out either. Aside from those two, I have not been able to find any other Front End that works at all. Sure, there still exist some old versions of other Front Ends but there are not any recent updates that I could discover. I will say that I have not yet purchased Centrafuse but that is only because I want to know if there are other viable options. My only real concern with not using a front end is the ability to incorporate apps. That is the real problem with windows is that the internet connectivity type of capabilities I want to add are just not possible (I have connection via tethering). Maybe there is one out there that I haven't found yet, or should I just buy Centrafuse?

On another note, whether or not I have a Front End, I would like to have working GPS software. My BU353 is great and always is able to indicate where and I am in the world. However, the software is quite lacking for the Windows environment. I was really excited to check out iNAV and Garmin GPC but I sadly found out both are no longer supported by the developers... I dont know about you, but I am not willing to purchase unsupported software. So my only (working) solution right now is MapFactor's Navigator Free. But, I am running into major issues that make me want to change software. With MapFactor, there are constantly issues where the 'route cannot be found' and POI are very lacking for common places that I look for. Sure, I can find major locations with the program and it works well (when it works) but I really just want to try out another touchscreen friendly nav program. I have tried the Streets and Tips Demo as well and it appears to work but it really is not optomized for touch screen (on screen keyboard is the most useful feature in MapFactor).

Anyways, the point of everything here is I am just curious about the health of the CarPc software development community. I just really want to be pointed in the right direction for a front end and navigation software. The only thing I can make work really really well is Music through winamp. But if I only wanted music,.I would have stuck with a stock head unit and my Sansa clip lol..

I've been working on some software for my Car PC, I'd just like to take this opportunity to show off some screenshots:

It's written in vb6, all transitions are animated, you can't really see that in the screenshots though. The map and chart downloading is threaded so there's no lag on multithreaded processors when it needs to download maps, it caches the maps locally so after a bit of time it doesn't need internet access.

I still need to work out how to program a radio, and perhaps how to interface with my phone in accepting and sending calls/sms. Let me know what you guys think.

Hi!

I am planning a carpc install in my car, and the hardware is not planned yet.
My parking spot is a bit tight, and I want more views around my car. My plan (shown in yellow) is to install one rear-view camera on the back, and two cams underneath the sidemirrors pointing backwards. I think this will be helpful to keep the car as straight and close to the markers as possible. In the future I also may mount 2 cams more on the mirrors pointing forward (shown in orange). This would maybe be helpful when entering the tight entry to the garage while turning the car.
I think it will be nice to have the 3 rearview cams active in reverse, and the 2 frontview ones activated manually maybe.

Has anyone of you seen software capable for this task?

Hey, I just want to ask for some help testing my app. I started it one year ago as my BSc final year project but I didn't publish it till now.

Basically, this app helps you save fuel by indicating when to shift gear and also displays real data such as revs, speed, throttle... You need an ELM327 Bluetooth adapter to use it.
I could only try it with 4 different cars and I always used the same OBD adapter so, though it should works fine with any diesel or gas car, I'm sure there are bugs. Therefore, if you've got an OBD adapter and an Android 2.2+ device It'd be great if you can try it and give me some feedback.

Get it on Google Play for free (no ads): http://play.google.com/store/apps/de...coshifter.beta

You'll have to add some technical data about your car before starting, if you need help with this check out http://ecoshifter.com/support/

Many thanks! :)

I was having a problem with Centrafuse not playing the audio on a DVD. So I installed AC3 Filter in hopes on getting audio back but no luck, AC3 Filter doesn't work with the modded audio drivers i'm using. So I installed ffdshow and got my audio back for DVD's. Awesome.

Next, the audio when playing XVID/DIVX files is really low, and because AC3 Filter doesn't work i'm at a loss. Is there anyway to tell XVID/DIVX files to use the ffdshow codec for the audio? I am able to raise the volume using ffdshow.

...

I used to frequent this forum and while this is not strictly carputer related, I know there are a bunch of developers here that might use this...

I have been developing on Android long before I ever had a actual android device and with the appearance of some IDE's on android now including AIDE (which I love) I started to get the itch to develop occasionally native on the platform, especially on my xoom (orig). with the bluetooth keyboard.

The problem for me was that I personally use svn for all my projects and there was no easy way to get my existing work to the device and back to the repository with the changes, so I only got as far as playing around with simple 'hello world' apps on the device.

I looked at the svn options on android but they all seemed to be scraping http and not actually using svn, so I decided to build a quick and easy client. I created Open Android SVN (OASVN) it is open source and the source is available on my svn, there are instructions in the lead article here: http://www.valleytg.com

Here is a link to the google play market for the app.

As I get time to expanded it, I want to make it into a full featured client.

A little summary of how it works and some screen shots:
open oasvn
add repos / checkout
all checked out files will go to your mountable storage (most of the time /mnt/sdcard/OASVN or OASVNlite

Once the checkout is complete I open AIDE and use the file browser to navigate to the directory where the checkout took place.. If you use eclipse for your projects you can just click on the project to open it in AIDE..

Do your changes and testing..

Go back to oasvn and commit.

Done. (until next change :P)
A custom skin is currently being made for the main interface.
What I will need is the following:

- FM/AM radio plugin on XMBC so radio stations can be picked from the main interface. I am still looking for the best tuner at the moment.
- GSP software (To be decided yet) to show up in a window within the main XMBC interface with a option to go full screen.
Still very early stages, but if anyone feeling up to the challenge wants to participate, please feel free to let me know.

Hey All,

I am using the Creative XFI 5.1 External Sound card to run my speaker system in my 2005 hyundai accent off of my Windows 7 CarPuter. I am running Centrafuse, and am having a bit of a tough time getting the sound equalized properly. Lately, I've realized that my front door speakers have sounded pretty quiet, so I started tinkering around with the built-in Mixer in Centrafuse. Now, I can hear my rear speakers blasting whenever I turn the volume down all the way, and when I crank my front and rear speakers to max, I'm unable to turn the volume down all the way to 0 (as in, if the volume appears to be on 0%-1%, my speakers still sound like they are at 50% volume or so). It sounds like my speakers are on different levels or something. Is there any way to fix this? If I reset my settings, then the front speakers sound quiet again and I'm unhappy with the overall audio quality. Is there a better choice of mixing software that I can use? I'm fairly certain that none of this is hardware related, I guess I'm just having a problem with the software...if anyone can give me some suggestions or advice as to what I can do, please let me know! Thanks.

Hiya,

I'm trying to create a document structure that can be used as a source of information on how to request and parse information from vehicles...

Hiya,

I'm trying to create a document structure that can be used as a source of information on how to request and parse information from vehicles through a diagnostics interface. The point would be to provide software developers with a quick way to incorporate support for vehicle diagnostics, and for software end users to add support for their own vehicles. If this is still confusing, think of it as one file definition you could use to tell your ELM327 to request or interpret vehicle specific information.

I thought I'd walk through what I've come up with so far. I'm looking for feedback, suggestions, etc.

Here's the basic structure:

Code:

<type>                      <!-- J1979,GMLAN,vehicle specific codes -->
  <protocols>            <!-- physical protocol specifications: CAN, ISO9141,etc -->
    <controller /> <!-- 'controller' or functional group parameter request is sent to -->
  </protocols>
  <active> <!-- parameters that are explicitly requested and have a response -->
    <parameters> <!-- parameter command that must be sent out for request -->
      <parameter>
        <conversion />    <!-- parameter response data conversion info -->
      </parameter>
    </parameters>
  </active>
  <passive> <!-- parameters that are read from watching bus traffic -->
    <parameter> <!-- parameter command that must be sent out for request -->
      <conversion />    <!-- parameter response data conversion info -->
    </parameter>
  </passive>
</type>

You start out with a specific type of diagnostic data, the most common being the OBD2 pids we all know from SAEJ1979. Another few examples include GMLAN (GM's internal data), SSM (from Subaru), MMDS (from Mazda) and so on. The <protocols> tags specify the physical protocols compatible with the type of diagnostic data we're interested in. So for SAEJ1979, we might have something like:

Code:

<type name="SAEJ1979" desc="OBDII Standard PIDs">
  <protocols>
    <protocol name="SAE J1850 PWM" />
    <protocol name="SAE J1850 VPW" />
    <protocol name="ISO 9141-2"/>
    <protocol name="ISO 14230-4 (KWP 5BAUD)" />
    <protocol name="ISO 14230-4 (KWP FAST)" />
    <protocol name="ISO 15765-4 (CAN 11/500)"/>
    <protocol name="ISO 15765-4 (CAN 29/500)" />
    <protocol name="ISO 15765-4 (CAN 11/250)" />
    <protocol name="ISO 15765-4 (CAN 29/250)" />
  </protocols>

(pretty much all protocol types are supported with J1979 for obvious reasons)

Or for SSM, which uses only a small subset of protocols, you might get something like:

Code:

<type name="SSM3" desc="Subaru Select Monitor III">
  <protocols>
    <protocol name="ISO 9141-2"/>
    <protocol name="ISO 15765-4 (CAN 11/500)"/>
  </protocols>

OBD Messages are constructed with something like the following format: [h0 h1 h2 d0 d1 d2 d3 d4 d5 d6]. Three header bytes, specifying the message priority, and the source and target addresses, and 7 data bytes. The goal of this document definition is to be able to construct and parse such messages.

To construct the header, I have each protocol specify controllers available. The most common is the ECU. So if we had a car that talked the ISO 9141-2 protocol, we'd probably have an ECU specified like so:

Code:

    <protocol name="ISO 9141-2">
      <controller id="ECU" name="Engine Control Unit" prio="0x68" target="0x6A" sender="0xF1" />
    </protocol>

Assuming we've finished defining protocols, there are now two categories for parameters: active and passive. Active parameters are meant to represent commands that must be explicitly sent, whereas passive represent parameters you see when you monitor bus traffic. We further wrap individual parameters with a <parameters> tag to specify the controller type associated with each parameter (ie pids for your ECU, your TCU, etc). Here's what the first few active parameters from SAEJ1979 might look like.

Code:

  <parameters controller="ECU">
    <parameter data="01 00 00 00 00 00 00" name="PIDs Supported 0x01-0x20" desc="?" numbytes="4">
      <conversion expr="MAPPED"/>
    </parameter>
    <parameter data="01 01 00 00 00 00 00" name="Monitor Status Since DTCs Cleared" desc="?" numbytes="4">
      <conversion expr="MAPPED"/>
    </parameter>
    <parameter data="01 02 00 00 00 00 00" name="Freeze DTC" desc="?" numbytes="2">
      <conversion expr="MAPPED" />
    </parameter>
    <parameter data="01 03 00 00 00 00 00" name="Fuel System Status" desc="?" numbytes="2">
      <conversion expr="MAPPED" />
    </parameter>
    <parameter data="01 04 00 00 00 00 00" name="Calculated Engine Load Value" desc="?" numbytes="1">
      <conversion units="%" default="true" expr="x*100/255" min="0" max="100"/>
    </parameter>
  </parameters>

It might seem convoluted to wrap parameters in a controller specification, but this lets you determine which parameters are available on a vehicle. The parameter elements themselves contain a data attribute which fill the [d0-d7] part of the standard obd message. The conversion specifies what needs to be done with the response data to convert it to a meaningful value.

I haven't looked at specifying passive parameters yet, but they'll likely be the same as active without a controller specified and with the expected header bytes explicitly included.

So yeah, that's pretty much it. I'm particularly worried about glancing over something major that makes incorporating other diagnostic types impossible. Also, this idea is something that's contingent on people actively contributing to it -- especially in its initial implementation. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Regards,

i figured this would be the best place to post this due to the large amount of programmers..

long story short, i have this led project that requires pwm. i have done a lot of led projects, all of them specifically avoiding pwm because i can not stand flicker. this project cannot avoid it, so i need to approach it head-on. i need a pwm solution that can pwm a led in what i believe to be the 500+hz range to avoid visible flicker.

at this moment, i have a attiny13a and a arduino mega 2560 on hand(as well as a "getting started with arduino" book).

while i understand that they are different programming environments, what do i need to learn to use and program either?

i started at this thread, but by page 2 my head is starting to spin with all the words. i want to order some parts so i can attempt to program while reading so that the words are more then just words, but don't have a clue where to start.

Imagine this. You’re traveling and using your mobile phone and you discover a great restaurant you want to try. Now, what if on that restaurant’s mobile website, they made it easy for you to get there by adding a feature which instantly launches a free 2D voice guided navigation session directly from your mobile browser? It’s a simple process and in the time it took to write this sentence, you would already be on your way to satisfying your empty stomach.

Different situation. Imagine you’re a developer of a mobile website or of an app with local content – maybe you run a website with restaurant reviews or a mobile travel app. What if, by just adding one line of code, you could integrate a full GPS turn-by-turn voice-guided navigation service experience into your website? That way, without having to open any other apps or programs, your audience can have an easy way to get to destinations important to you.

Well, whether you’re a developer of a location-based website or app that focuses on things like travel, shopping, local search, deals, or connecting people via social media, or just a customer who wants an easy way to get to the important people and places, you’ll want to hear this. Today I’m happy to let you know that we’ve created the first HTML5 browser based navigation service for mobile devices!

With our new navigation service, it’s easy to get anyone with a HTML5 supported mobile browser just about anywhere – without having to leave your website or do any additional searches multiple other applications.

HTML5 Browser Navigation Features

Included in the new service are a lot of the features you’ve come to expect from us – navigation with full-color moving maps, spoken directions and automatic rerouting if you miss a turn. The best part? It’s all absolutely free.

Developers: Want access to our new service?

Are you a developer interested in playing with our new HTML5 service? We’d like to partner with you! We’re currently looking for select mobile software developers to test and provide feedback for our APIs and help shape the future of location based services. For more information, please go to www.telenav.com/developer/HTML5 and follow the instructions.

As for when it will be available publicly, we expect to open it up in early 2012.

As you could imagine, here at TeleNav, we’re pretty excited about this because our goal has always been to make it easier for people to get to places most important to them and with this announcement, we’re confident we’re helping to fulfill that. Whether you’re a business that wants an easier way to connect customers with locations or you’re a person who just wants an easier way to get around, our free mobile web browser-based turn-by-turn navigation service can help do both.

Special thanks to our team here for making this possible. This is a great accomplishment and kudos to you for your tireless work on this project.

Have any questions about our new service? Let me know below and I’ll do my best to get you an answer.

I want to do some testing of a programme I have written. Any suggestions are very welcome, here is what I'm upto:

I am using an arduino to send accelerometer data via USB serial connection into my visual basic application. With acceleration I calculate vehicle speed, I am also listening to my GPS antenna and then using sensor fusion with a kalman filter to correct accel drift.

At the moment this doesn't work all too well, so I want to be able to debug it offline, my application can log all the sensors and application output, but I would love to be able to then send that data back into the application as if it were really on the road.

Can anyone recommend some hardware emulation software that can send data from a virtual serial port to emulate the arduino acceleration and have the data arrive at the same time interval it would have been received, as well as a second hardware emulation of the GPS antenna? Or does anyone fancy writing something that could perform these tasks? I can then run long playbacks and figure out why my app crashes after 10 mins etc. Surely someone else has done something similar, I had a quick search of the forums but didn't find anything.

Currently the project has not received much of my attention lately but I am now keen to get it all properly working. Suggestions greatly received.

For those who don't want to read my ramblings!!! Basically I'm looking for a way to adjust the EQ from VB.net 2010.

I built an arduino based board that monitors steering wheel controls, vehicle speed, a switch that changes when I open the roof on my convertible and various other inputs for startup/shutdown control. On my stock radio, when the roof on the car is opened it triggers "Audio Pilot" which adjusts the EQ and also attempts to enhance frequencies by way of a microphone that listens for ambient noise. It actually works fairly well but that is beside the point. Since I will be pulling the head unit out, I will be loosing this functionality and was thinking that I would make a similar function by controlling EQ when the roof opens.

I have my speed controlled volume and all other functions working in VB but am having a hard time finding a good way to control EQ from VB. To make things more difficult I haven't decided on the front end yet. In my last car pc about 5 years ago I used Road Runner. I am not against Ride Runner but am also considering FreeIce depending on how long it takes to release v2 and Centrafuse as my last option.

I have figured out how to control winamp's eq using the 1-0 and q-p hotkeys or with a plugin I can get a global hotkey that will listen even if not in focus. I can set them to whatever I want. In testing I have set them to control+1 andn control+q as well as simply 1 and q. I am able to move individual frequencies this way but REALLY was hoping to just be able to set a preset for roof open and one for roof closed and switch between the two depending on the roof's state.

Anybody have any suggestions on how to get there from here? I'm not a developer really, I'm a system engineer with a few VB6 classes. I'm working through learning .net at the same time as this :)

i think windows 7 is now a good choice for a car pc and should be easier to use with the touch screen.
however my current pc is running a solid state and boots in 16 seconds.
my home win 7 is also running an ssd but takes alot longer to boot despite being much more powerfull!

the thing that made a big difference to the boot time off the xp pc is a program called boot vis
its a brilliant little Microsoft program that im sure a lot off you are familiar with
dose anyone know how to do the same thing in windows 7?
any programs that are similar?
my install before was XP and i had the drama of the touch screen not being usable for the first 30-40 seconds after startup but on windows 8 it is instant.
so really just wondering if anyone else had any experience with it yet.

Hiya,

I wanted some feedback in terms of using your typical front end software (RR, Centrafuse, openMobile, etc) and the need for a mouse and keyboard to do certain things. Is it possible to add plugins or media files to the FE easily without a mouse/keyboard? For those of you who have a FE set up in your car, what's the process when you want to do something like the aforementioned, and if its too annoying, how would you want the process of loading external data (whatever it is) to be?

Centrafuse seems pretty decent about it -- you can specify folders to 'watch' for media and automatically load (import) media from a usb key/external source when you plug it in. You can also directly download plugins from the CF app store (but what if you don't have an internet connection?).

So, I've been at the Build conference all this week and have had a great time seeing the keynotes and technical sessions, as well as getting to play...

So, I've been at the Build conference all this week and have had a great time seeing the keynotes and technical sessions, as well as getting to play with the dev hardware they gave us.

I know there's a thread already about a Windows 8 FE, but I just wanted to keep this in general about Windows 8 for those interested.

So, by now you've probably read about the new touch UI. I wasn't a WinPhone user so I was skeptical at first, but after having used it these past few days I think it's very usable, clean, and responsive.

The OS is extremely fast booting up. On these tablets they gave us, I'm seeing about 5-10 second boot up from cold start. Resume from sleep is instant. Really impressive. Faster than my MacBook Pro with SSD.

I immediately went to the NVIDIA, Qualcomm, and TI boots asking about ARM hardware. It's quite a ways away still unfortunately. I think there's going to be a lot of interesting possibilities for embedded hobbyists if we can get our hands on ARM systems. Some of the vendors I talked to were already claiming 10 hours of battery life. Intel is also showing off their new fanless chips in a dev tablet, but no word on dates or tech specs yet.

From a development stand point, I'm pretty impressed with what they've done. Metro apps all use a common runtime that is accessible from C#/VB, C++, and JavaScript. The Windows Runtime is written in native code. That is why the system is so responsive and has low resource usage. If you're a decent web developer, you can now become a Windows app developer. As scary as that sounds, I can see why MS is doing that to attract so many devs. Hopefully this doesn't end up as VB did in the 90's with so much ****ty code by VB programmers though. No offense... ;) At a minimum, I'm sure we'll be seeing web-type security vulnerabilities manifested in apps from web developers. MS has done a lot to be as secure by default as possible, but there's always something that will come up.

Unfortunately they still have quite a while to go with development. This is not even an "alpha", it's just a dev preview. Most likely we'll be seeing it in late 2012 which is unfortunate, because as usual MS is 2 years late to the party. Based on what I've seen though, they're fashionably late and have a lot of great potential.

As an iPhone and iPad user, I think the Win8 tablet could be a serious contender because it's a totally different device. I think Android tablets haven't been doing well because they're just trying to match the iPad, which they just can't. What MS is trying to do is re-imagine what a mobile computing platform can and should be. Not just a device to consume content, but it can also be a full featured PC if you need it to be. The inking capabilities are great too. Apple fanboys may not want to hear it (since they've likely never used it and are just following what "Chairman Steve" says), but a stylus does have its place. I used my tablet and stylus to take notes in EverNote this week. Much more convenient than handwritten notes on paper and a lot faster than trying to type things out on my iPad.

Later,

Wanted: Programmer who wants to play with DAB+ option

I have been in talks with Realtek about getting a copy of their SDK for the Realtek 2832 chipset, which is Realteks All in one DVB-T, DAB+ and FM...

I have been in talks with Realtek about getting a copy of their SDK for the Realtek 2832 chipset, which is Realteks All in one DVB-T, DAB+ and FM chip.

Thanks to some very friendly people there, they have given me a copy of the SDK, which includes documentation on the module, together with a sample DAB program, and the source code for the DAB program (written in Visual C++ by the looks of things).

So, I have a request.

Currently there is one main thread for getting the Venice based chips running through a daughterboard, which is a pretty good system, however seems to have a few issues (Board creater no longer available, technical support issues). I'm not slagging it off at all, but I think that the Realtek system can be another option for people. It has one MASSIVE bonus in that there is no translation to analogue to send audio to the computer, it is done totally via the USB or PCI bus, and decoding is done by the computer itself.

I have tested the module in my car, using ArcSoft TotalMedia running, with an external DVB-T antenna, and I get DAB+ signals as clear as a bell up to a tested 130km/h. Dropouts are non-existant, and using TotalMedia, I can scan for all DAB+ stations in around 15 seconds.

The other upside to this system, is that you can pick up these cards for around $20 AUD for a single tuner PCI card, or around $40 AUD for the dual tuner PCI cards. USB models are around the same price.

I am looking for a programmer who can take the SDK and sample program, and create a Centrafuse, and possibly a RideRunner plugin to get the DAB(+) and FM side of things working, and possibly even integrate the DVB-T portion of the chipset to get TV working as well.

I am offering the copy of the SDK for the programmer, and I am also willing to purchase one or two USB or PCI based units to ship to the programmer to use for testing purposes.

I would prefer the programmer to be based in an area that has DAB+ (Australia would be even better, and Perth, Australia would be outstanding!), to make testing easier, but if anyone else would be interested, please let me know.

So does anyone want to have a play, and expand our options for radio's in our computers?

If so, PM me, or reply to this thread, and I will see what I can do to help.

Thanks all,

At one point years ago I converted everything over to mp3 and I guess I never deleted the original files. Im now trying to organize things a bit and realize that I have duplicate songs, different bitrates, missing album art, missing songs, corrupt songs, incorrect ID tags, etc. Is there some kind of software that can assist me in this task?

Hey Everyone,

This is my first post here. In short, I'm an engineer/student. I do everything from computer systems engineering, to system software engineering. I love cars, although I don't own one myself. I found this forum so I figured I'd start putting two of my passions together and create some cool stuff! On with the good stuff..

I absolutely hate all interfaces that have been designed for cars, I have yet to find one that is "usable" when operating a vehicle. Music is also another love of mine, so I wanted to create a sleek minimalism player that could be featured on any platform. Well, just take a look: http://jamesatchue.com/music/

It has two sample songs. This is based off web technologies such as javascript, and flash(YUCK). Some of this code was used from another project but was licensed for me to use whenever I want in any application. The final version will have alot more features, and won't be based on ****ty flash, but rather a cross platform framework.

Future Features:
- Artist information
-Album Artwork included in Artist Slideshow
-Easy panels to start a music playlist

Please let me say, this is just a "proof of concept" at the moment and will be much better than this in the end game.

Well I am in the making of a carpc for my 2004 Mazda 6. I have the computer made and ready to go. I am still searching what to do for the software portion. Well here are some more details that might help.

Currently have a touch screen, gps, all my music on a hd, and have it organized into playlists with iTunes. I am search for a software that can be integrated with iTunes. I have all my playlists on that and it will be better that way. I have no luck in finding it just yet.

Currently I am using drive line, which i really do like, but has no integration with iTunes. Also I have used Road Runner and it says it works with iTunes or winamp but the thing crashes every time I try to use it with those programs. A

Any suggestions from you guys or what I can do to get what I want. Thanks! Looking forward to hearing what people have to say.

Was wondering if Virtual Box users can help me out. I finally have the install working to a point. I have finished getting the Host PC all together, but now I am putting the Guest VMs together and having an issue.

All the hardware is the exact same model. So all soundcards are one model and brand, same with the touchscreens, keyboards and KVMP switches. Problem is, in its current setup, Virtual Box will select all the USB cards for one VM, even though I only selected one of them. It says if I enter a serial number for the device, I can assign it that way to lock it to that device, but these sound cards do not have a serial number. Also, it says I can assign by the port for the device. How do I find out the port through Win 7 though?

Car Software Liability

Hiya,

I was thinking about releasing software for use in a vehicle... and when deciding what sort of license to apply to it, I came to the conclusion that there doesn't seem to be a way to universally distribute software and also absolve yourself of all liability related to someone's use of that software. This is especially relevant for software used in vehicles.

Most EULAs and open source software licenses have clauses related to 'excluding implied warranty' and 'limiting liability', to minimize the severity of legal action that an end-user of the software can take against the software distributors/authors. But in many jurisdictions, you're not allowed to waive either of those things, especially when something like injury occurs. Car software, especially the type that interfaces with the car in some way (obd2), or instructs the user to do stuff (gps) while the car is driving has the potential to result in property damage, injury, etc.

side-note: Simple access to your car through OBD2, especially on more modern vehicles, can get the car to do some weird stuff. I remember once when I was using a non ELM cable (I think it was a VAGK with CAN) I somehow sent a message to my car and it freaked out. Luckily the car was parked, but whatever I did caused all the dash lights to start blinking in sync! Another example is engine damage that some people cause by trying to tune their vehicles. Also, there's this article: http://www.autosec.org/pubs/cars-oakland2010.pdf, where it seems the researchers were able to use what I'm guessing is GMLAN to cause the car to brake *REMOTELY*. How insanely dangerous is that?

Regardless of whether you're a company selling front end software, or a single dev sharing their code in the hope others find it useful, no code is perfect and it's impossible to test against all use cases for computer software (its even worse for car software since there are tons of different vehicles the software can be used in as well!). Have any of the software devs this applies to here considered what would happen if someone using their software screwed their car up, or got in an accident and wanted to sue them? I guess the point I'm trying to make is that I feel there's no real protection for software devs in this case.

There are many people on this forum who have done some development on different aspects of software used in vehicles, so I wanted to ask your opinion... is my line of thinking right? Or is my opinion totally flawed?

I also have another hardware serial port going TO the BCT15.

I wanna be able to pipe the NMEA input to the other serial port, and be able to kill it for that 1% time that I'll be programming it or controlling it, without having to plug into the front port.

So... basically, pipe data from COM1 to COM2..

NMEA----->COM1 -------> COM2

I tried Xport, but it looks like it can only create virtual ports, not forward to hardware ports.
Suggestions? The only software I seem to find is $150 (ouch!)

I have a project I want to do, and I'm not sure how to go about it. I have done a bunch of searching, and I'm starting to confuse myself more and more now, so I'm just gonna make a thread here, hopefully someone can help me out.

First, what I am working with:
-e39 5 series with an MKIV widescreen nav system.
-A net-top pc
-an IBUS to USB converter

First, my goal:
I want to be able to play zune DRM music through my car, which means I am limited to using Zune software, Windows media player, or windows media center (from what I can tell). I do not want to replace all the functions of the nav, and want it more or less to look stock.

I know this limits me a lot in what I can do, but I would be happy with a menu that lets me select a playlist, as well as buttons for play/pause, forward, back, and shuffle. It would also be nice to display the current song.

It seems these menu's and what not shouldn't be too difficult to display by sending IBUS signals, but, what I do not know how to do is get the info from media center (which seems the most promising of the 3 software's I can use)

Is there a way I can control media center through another piece of software running on the sa3me computer. What I want is a piece of software that can see what playlist media center has, and send those names to the nav screen menu. I only have a few playlists, so i don't need to worry about scrolling on the nav screen. Then, it needs select one based on a keyboard shortcut, and media center should start playing it. Then forward back etc are simple button presses.

I'm not asking someone to do this for me, just guide me in a direction, maybe tell me what commands can be used to control media center if I were to make a C program, or if this is even possible.

Thanks.

This is a script I developed to automatically put a laptop running Microsoft Windows 7 into Standby or Hibernate.
I developed this because ShutControl wasn't reliable for me - it would continually corrupt the config file and crash with .NET errors.

The software is provided as-is, and you are free to do whatever with it. No warranties if you break your stuff with it. It works for me and is simple and gets the job done.

Requirements:
Laptop (with a working battery which holds charge for at least 1 minute)
Windows 7 (may work on Vista as well but untested)
Windows Powershell (built into Windows 7)

Preparation:
1. Start Powershell from the start menu as an Administrative User
2. Type the following:
4. Start Powershell IME as a regular user

I was trying to build a setup that had multi-zone on one PC, but most Front Ends have way to many limitations to make it a individual and working experience. The only option was to put individual PC systems into the car, or build a powerful system that can use virtual machines. I decided to go with the latter.

I decided to use VMPlayer, which is provided for free and is created by VMware. Problem is I have some questions on set up. I plan to use a AMD Phenom X6, also plan to use 5 virtual machines.

1) So does that mean under number of cores, I set 1 core per VM?

2) In options, it asks me how many displays the VM would use. I have 6 physical displays, but under the VM settings do I only put one display?

3) Is there a way to make it so that a specific VM opens on a specific display by default?

4) Is there a way to make VM auto start?

5) If I hibernate the host setup, will the VM be active after coming out of hibernation?

Thanx in advance for any advice or tips you can give.

beware!! this is still in beta form, so don't expect it to fully work for everyone!!

i originally saw this in djakay's worklog--here--.

he built a custom mitsubishi logo that looks really cool that has now found it's way onto my laptop, and soon my carpc.

after he kindly posted a .zip file with his custom logo, and the .exe, i started looking into the program that was used.

i found that he used a program called Windows 7 Boot Updater that allows you to do all sorts of interesting things.

http://www.coderforlife.com/projects/win7boot/

i did run into a problem where a required .dll was missing--msvcr100.dll.

here's a link to a gaming site that describes your different options to get the .dll to work:

i tried option 2--downloaded, and installed visual C++ redistributable x64, and after a reboot, the program started working correctly..

Hi all,

you may pay attention on a new car pc front end cPOSdotNet.
As the name may assume it is not an update for cPOS it is totally new developed in C#.NET.
Therefore it is running under Windows XP, Vista or Win7.

cPOSdotNet is open source and free of charge.

Basically it is designed as an MVC (model view controller) application.
View: Today there is one view available which is made with Microsoft's Windows Presentation Foundation (WPF).
Controller: This is the main core program. It provides basic functions like an On Screen Keyboard, a volume management or a MP3 indexer.
Model: The functionallity comes with several plugins that can be activated or deactivated. Today there are plugins available for:

Brightness control

Volume control

DVD Player

Movie Player

Audio Player

Image Player

DVB-T Player

GPS

PC Diagnostic

Internet Radio

Google Services

Cellphone (only AT commands)

Cellphone (AT commands, OBEX synchronisation, remote control)

FM Radio

Web Cam

Navigation via Auto Mapa

If you like to test the current version 0.63 feel free to download the attachment and post your experience here.
The documents are just in german, but the software should be in english too.

Greetings

Since the Windows 7 Phone is basically Windows CE/7, the apps that play on there should be able to play somewhat functional on a PC. After researching these app files, I found out they come inside XAP files, otherwise known as Microsoft Silverlight files. MS Silverlight is a browser technology what should be pretty much OS and hardware agnostic, so these apps should be playable on a PC.

There are a few methods to playing these, but I have not gotten any working:

Embed in a webpage - Unlike adobe flash, SL apps must be embedded, IE will not run these files directly. However, off the win7 apps I have tried, I just get blank white screens.

Use the SL Viewer app - The SL Viewer app is an offline viewer for SL files. It is automatically installed when SL is installed. However, it requires access to the XAP file on a webserver instead of locally and I cannot get it to install for me.

Embedded in custom app - SL apps are embedded into .net projects. We could custom code a viewer, however I am not sure of the work or even the demand for such a thing.

If anyone has any ideas on how to run these apps locally without custom coding an app, that should be the better way. If any devs have any idea on how to run a silverlight app locally, please let me know. There are currently 8000+ win7 phone apps out there, which is about 7950 more than any other competing front end.

I just coded a program that automatically dims your monitor gamma.
It locates at your position (lonitude & latitude) where the sun is and dim the monitor if its dark.
Also you have a manual mode any MANY more really nice features.
If you set the COM port to "none", the manual lat and long settings are used!

Ok so its been discussed on here several different times about using an Android Tablet (or phone) as a carPC. I like this idea as everything is contained in one nice little package and no major wiring (except for sound) is needed. The major problem is that they arent designed for use while driving. There is CarHome for some of the froyo based phones and another 3rd party program called car home that work but arent that great and dont have a lot of visual customization available.

What Im thinking of doing (and its just in the idea and considering phase) is designing and putting together my own. I have some experience programming for Android (was making a game for it for fun) and the basic premise wouldnt be too hard. Making a media player from scratch isnt hard and embedded the navigation is pretty simple as well. The gui interface might be a little tricky cause I dont know much about it and would need to learn but theres plenty of tutorials that I have available. The hard part would be integrating and doing everything for things like the OBD. Also some things wouldnt be perfect like integrating other apps like pandora or iheartradio would be the normal layout for them and wouldnt be able to make a car version.

So what Im wondering is how many would be interested in something like this (and possibly helping with things like graphics), because if its something that would get used I would seriously consider taking on the adventure and starting with this.

Navit 0.2.0 "Long Awaited" is here!

As its codename states, it's been a while since the last Navit release : but a lot of work has been done (we have many commits every day!)

Just to name a few :
- OSM search has been enhanced (now supports all ISO countries)
- Internal Gui is now fully configurable
- we have more map drawing layouts, with automatic night mode
- qt map drawer and qt gui has been enhanced
- we now have 52 translations
- android build has been greatly improved

and, as usual, many bugfixes and other enhancements.

You can download the new release here.

You can get nightly builds here.

You can chat with us if you need help.

Enjoy it!

Open Sync

While this will be included as part of an OpenMobile plugin, it is fully open source and is designed to be used stand alone with any operating system or front end.

What is it:
Open Sync is a protocol, a server and a client library. All of which are open source and fully documented. It is designed to sync files between a "sync server" and a carPC. This server can be located on a local network, a remote network or even across the internet.

Design Goals:

Fully extensible -can have extensions and functionality added without any change to its design

Secure - The protocol supports salted password exchange and optionally even SSL transactions to ensure your data remains safe even when traveling through unprotected connections.

Zero Configuration - This entire setup can be deployed with no end user configuration required. The client automatically finds the server on the network and syncs files without any setup required. It uses a variety of methods including UPnP and UDP broadcasts to ensure this works locally, over wifi, through firewalls and even over the internet. No mapping drives or editing config files required.

Platform Neutral - The server and client library are written in C# to ensure they can be run on Windows, Linux or OSX. The protocol is open source to allow anyone to create platform specific implementations in their favorite language.

Fast - the protocol automatically scales to the capabilities of the current connection. While on wifi, files are transferred with no overhead to ensure maximum transfer speed. Over a cellular connection, various compression algorithms (including gzip and LZMA) are used to minimize bandwidth usage and maximize transfer speed. The LZMA extension for example, can transmit ~500kb/s over a 100kb/s connection.

Expected public release: Dec 1, 2010
Anyone interested in developing their own implementations or helping with the design are welcome to contribute.

I've been reworking my original ideas on a touchscreen application. Mostly being done as a hobby/challenge, and also to say, "yep, I programmed that". Anyways, consider this a pre-alpha/alpha stage at this point.

The main feature I wanted to do, at least for myself, is create some type of 'evolving' for the file system. Upon first use of the audio portion, the app will scan every folder it can find for audio files. From there, for each folder you have the option of excluding it (you can always un-exclude as well). If a folder is excluded it will be skipped next time you re-search or next time the app shuts down and starts up again. On an old 1.4ghz 1MB ram xp home laptop in the car, the search through 20,000 folders only lasted 10 or so seconds.
I never cared for the supply one folder path in a settings file you have to config from the desktop in other apps.

Audio is mostly done...
*Individual song play and adding to playlists are done.
*Visualizations started, only 1 added so far.
*Volume control started, working.
*Pause/resume play done.

Video started...
*Video file play started, working. Stops music control completely, insteads of suspends it for time being.

General...
*Skins - All graphics/buttons/etc are placeholders at the moment. Buttons can be changed, but that is all the effort so far.
*Settings coming along faster than expected.
** WiFi settings almost complete (I update to car through local LAN, so this will be great instead of transferring through USB to test something).
** File system exclusions listed here, 1/2 done. Spawns lists of excluded folders, haven't programmed un-excluding them yet.

ToDo...
*Better playlist support (clearing/saving/deleting)
*Add mp3 tag info support (easy, but a lot files I tested with return errors/no info on tags).
*Find better graphics, at least I have placeholders though.
*Find better fonts/colors, placeholders still in though.
*Add album art support
*Add equalizer and expand (test with 3 bands worked at a glance, although not properly added)
*Start CD/DVD support.

ToDo (Not even close yet)...
*GPS (Never worked with these yet)
*Cameras (Should be easy)
*Radio
*Internet

The only thing I am worried about is plugins. I've never attempted anything big as I'm just a hobby/fun programmer. I do not know how to code plugins or plugin functionality and a lot of people love to be able to use plugins (add what they really need/want on their own). I think this is my biggest downfall.

Anyways, some comments/feedback/criticism/anything are appreciated. Is there no room for another frontend, as we already have a really good selection to choose from?

Some audio controls/visualizations

Wasn't sure where to post this and I didn't find anything on the search so here's the situation....

Just reloaded EVERYTHING on my carpc. Clean install of Win7 home premium....riderunner, a couple skins, Garmin, and iGuidance, and winamp....

it boots fast. Very responsive...but when go to the Garmin screen....it will load and then the overlay disappears and just shows garmin. To get the overlay back, I minimize garmin and the overlay comes back and re-sizes Garmin. Then when I add the destination and garmin switches to the map, it disappears back to no overlay and the navigation loading screen. Touch the screen and Garmin comes back....but no overlay. And the process repeats.

Wife stole my car so I don't have it here to mess with...but is this something that's an "easy" fix? something which doesn't require re-installing everything?

It seems that each time I try windows 7, something goes wonky and end up going back to xp. I was hoping I could keep 7 on here this time since it boots really fast without any tweaking.

I'll keep searching in the meantime. Thanks.

Hi guys.

I'm just wondering which OS would be best for cheap CAR Pcs based on ARM processors 400-533MHZ with 128M flash ram.

All of them now runs under Win CE OS (5.0 or 6.0) but due to popularity boost of Android and Android Market may be it would be nice idea to port it on such devices. I have read discuission on forum about BAD sides of Android for car devices, but X86 devices were discuissed which are more expensive and powerful, but less expensive devices such as based on ARM processors could benefit from using OS like Android or MeeGo.

What do you think?

I've been speaking to a media company about creating a software to display movie theater showtimes/information. As some of you may know, I am the creator of the old Movietimes plugin for RideRunner. The problem with that plugin was the data associated with it was illegally scraped from exterior sources. The company I'm dealing with, West World Media, provides movie theater showtimes, comprehensive details, trailers, AND ticket purchasing for over 35 countries worldwide. Based on some of their initial documents, the data is about as best as it can get, and they have a clear API.

The problem is the COST of the data. I do not yet have any figures, but i'm sure like with most things the more people that utilize the data the lower the cost per user. So much question is how much are you willing to pay for a plugin which will provide this data to your front end? RideRunner, Centrafuse, OpenMobile, and Android OS will surely be supported. Let me know so that i know whether to proceed. Simply vote in the poll and tell me your Front End of choice.

I should probably state that I am NOT looking to profit from the proceeds at all. I'm just trying to get something done because the requests for a plugin continue to come in, and honestly it bugs the bejesus outta me that my old plugin remains broken!

Hello all, iv been talking with a few of my friends over the past few weeks on putting together a program to work with these usb controlled relay boards, i myself am no programmer and my "dedicated" friends always seem to have something else they would rather work on.

Without rambling on, would anyone be on board for helping put together something like this? The goal would be to have something thats still very user customizable but has a real clean simple layout thats touch screen friendly, primarily i would want to be able to control things such as windows, interior/exterior lights, wipers, horn etc. and any other in car accessories and be able to do away with the factory switches if wanted, and if possible something that could also carry over to things like air suspension or other fancy things.

I start tinkering with the idea of using a Mac Mini as a server and an iPad/iPhone as the client.
The Mac Mini would integrate with OBDII, iTunes, GPS, video streaming, etc., and would interface with the iPad/iPhone via the web server. On the iPad/iPhone an app implemented as a container with a web control... Naturally the implementation would support HTML5 for video and controls. The client app could also take advantage of iPad/iPhone functionality.
All this because I don't want to install a monitor...

As I have recently been given a laptop from a friend, my PC techiness got the best of me. I have done no installation as of yet, but I've been determined to come up with my own custom touch screen application.
It's not much too look at, but I never really liked all the big clunky controls I've seen from the other 'frontends'.

It's mostly done for the audio portion, and I will be adding in some video support within the next week or two. It's slow going, couple hours a week, but I wanted to post a screenshot of it and see what others think. I have included support for adding music paths and then selecting music from folders inside those paths, as well as full cd support including ripping to a selected path of your choice.

If there are any features that are a 'must include' for a touchscreen, please let me know. I am thinking of audio (done), video, internet radio (done), usb cameras, and gps.

Here is the audio portion running:
What i need is software that can EQ my outputs on the motherboard, it should be able to EQ all the outputs (4.1 or 5.1) and not only the front speakers.
I can't use the inbuilt eq's of winamp etc. as i dont use them.

I'm having an issue with audio volume on GMPC running on Windows 7. Basically...you can't hear anything the Garmin voice says...it's next to inaudible.

If I were to put things into a perspective here... I can have the Windows volume set to Max. Winamp volume set to half, and the Car's volume set to 10 (I use the headunit) I can hear music perfectly fine, even over roadnoise. In order to hear the Garmin voice with those settings...I have to turn the car to at LEAST 22.

I haven't had a chance to dig around in the registry for Garmin, but has anyone else run into this?

Thanks,

Hopefully this is in the right section...

I just purchased a used mac mini. The previous owner was running Vista. I looked through the programs and did not see parallels or bootcamp so I am not sure how he got it to run vista.

I want to run XP, so I inserted the XP install disk, deleted the partition and went to install. I am getting an error saying it cannot copy driver.cab. I have the option of skipping, retrying, and exiting.

I am currently deleting the partition and reinstalling again (just to see if maybe it was a fluke)

Does anyone have any solutions/suggestions?

For anyone that uses an Android 2.2 device, you may know that there is a Chrome and Firefox plugin called "Push to Phone". Basically, if you are on Google Maps or a website, you press "Push To Phone" on the browser and after a few seconds, it shows up on your phone (either in the browser or in google maps).

I figure writing this wouldn't be too difficult and would need a networked machine in between the car and computer.

My thought process goes like this:
* Browser plugin or stand-alone application take your text/url/address and send it to a machine (could be a Linux box with PHP and MySQL, using SOAP)
* When your start your car, it opens a stateful connection to the server
* Looks for new requests that are added to the database

Alternatively, the same can be done from your Android or iOS phone directly to the car.

Just a thought.

If this exists already, even better!

A coworker and i are working making a plugin for centrafuse.
Our skin we have for now places all buttons across the bottom.
Before we release it for dl, we were wondering if could get some feedback on a couple things.

Just answer these please,
What all controls are you expecting? Our present version is very consolodated, and focussed on play videos from ur cf or "my vids" library.

Would u prefer a "remote" on the side? Initially our controls are at bottom in traditional player manner, but we were thinkin, car users on touchscreen, might want a different interface to keep from constantly reaching across the screen.

What other "video" features would you like? Thanks to our incorporation of vlc, the sky is the limit (streaming, dvd play, video chat) However, lets think about our suggestions, dont want anyone gettin into a wreck because of our plugin, lol.

I finally hooked up my carputer and stereo and got everything running, but have run into a problem. The whole reason for me even starting this project was my desire to hear lossless audio while driving. I have gone through several front end softwares with absolutely no luck.

I am looking for a front end that is capable of playing (either by default or with plugins) Apple Lossless Audio Codec (ALAC) .M4A files. All my media is in this format and I would prefer not to have to encode it as FLAC since that would mean I will lose most ID3 tag info.

If I have to I will stoop to using iTunes as my front end, though that is EXTREMELY undesirable.

Please help.  :nutz:
