Okay, here it is. The AutoTouch2 source. I know it's been a long time coming, but I've had various issues with my home system, and not done a lot of work on AutoTouch lately as my system isn't currently installed!

Anyway, I've pulled out the Navigation DLL from the source for a variety of reasons but the rest of it is all here, please let me know if it works. I may have missed something:

it'll take some time to download, I'm trying to find a faster place to mirror it!

Hey,
I am working on two skins for AutoTouch - a high contrast skin for daytime use that would be good in bright sunlight, and a lower contrast, and darker skin for nighttime use...

I'm running into a problem with the hotspots in the XML file though... how are they measured? I have tried pixels, points, even picas, and my measurements still seem to be off - the hotspots do not line up with my graphic...

Please let me know what type of measurements are used for the coordinates! :-)

Thanks for this GREAT and speedy front end by the way... for my purposes (playing music, basically) it is awesome!

Let me start by saying I'm new to car computing. I installed an old IBM laptop and a new Lilliput 7" touchscreen in a 1980 MGB with little difficulty. I drove from New York to Boston this past week and it was solid. But I'm going crazy trying to get software that interfaces with the driver as well as let's say OEM software from BMW or Acura.

I love the simplicity of the interface of AutoTouch, but why can't it work with different gps software, other than MapPoint. If not, is it possible just to get mp3 player interface as a stand alone and switch between a gps application and media player application. All of the frontends out there are too much using them with a 7" touchscreen. Right now I'm not using a frontend, I customized the desktop a little with the taskbar configured to auto-hide on the left side. When I start my car, windows boots with StreetAtlas, Real Audio & a OSK. I only have one icon on the desktop, large Car Logo for the folder that I keep other icon..ie Netscape, Solitaire, Explore, Voice Recorder, Outlook all with big icons, easy to touch using touch screen. Isn't less more? Simple can be elegant.
Any suggestions and feedback would be welcome.

I am about to install a p3 1ghz laptop with 256mb ram

I have installed and fiddled with centrafuse and i like its layout and styling, and i suppose it runs moderately well (when i click something, it goes there and its not overly sluggish)

BUT

what i really crave is like a commercial touchscreen style system where it is all instant and looks like a beatiful integrated seamless system, not a TS controlling a computer.

SO

what is a front end that will be really responsive and fast but still look cool and has some good skins. I think centrafuse may be just a little complex for my modest computer. Any ideas?

So it's been a while since I've had time to do any work, and currently I Don't have an installed car system (long story), and since I'm so freakin' busy I don't know when I'll get the system re-installed. So in light of that I've been considering releasing my source code so that you all can have at it and start making AutoTouch even cooler and better than it is. Is anyone interested in taking this projects and running?

Note: For the moment the Navigation module would not be included because I'm using a 3rd party GPS decoding module and by releasing my source I'd have to release their Lisence code which I use, and I obviously can't do that. So I'm trying to figure out the best way around that.

The rest of the code is all written with Visual Studio 5.0 and uses the .Net Framework 2.0 and is all c# based.

If someone really wants to continue the work on this then I'll spend the time it'll take to clean it up and put it out, but if no one actually wants to work with it I can continue on the way I'm doing, making incremental improvements when I have time.

I just recieved by Beta of the Microsoft Visual Studio 2005 environment including the .net framework 2.0 and I've ported AutoTouch over to it. I'm running some tests with it now to see how it's workin but at first blush it seems a bit faster which is good news.

I'd like to start a new thread of feature requests. I know we've had them in the other threads but I'd like them in one place so I can start knocking them down.

Download site is the same, I'm working on getting a larger pipe for it so I can put it somewhere else (possibly tomorrow).

Improvements are minimal, but this one allows people to create their own plug-ins as we've stated. There's a sample plug in up there, in a zip file.

Please ask questions, I'm willing to help!

Also let me know if the download fails, the old version is up there two just to keep things cool in case I screwed something up. I believe the MSI will work, but I'm not 100% positive because the two machines I've got to test it on had older versions, and the speech sdk on it!

This is very much a beta!

I'm getting some serious time in on it today. This is going to be cool, I've revamped a lot of the internal system for much cleaner operation. This should make it really easy to build custom forms, and I hope to entice people to do so (Zorro, want to see if you can embed your phone app easily) Anyone doing custom work with the Desitnator SDK would be welcome too.

I don't yet have an ETA becasue things are so hectic here, but work is on going. As of my last post I thought there was less to do but then it hit me that I had to add a way to go to switch between generic forms as well.

In case you've not seen the various threads I thought I'd related what has happened and what's going to happen with AutoTouch.

1) I did finally get around to adding the ability to any button to have a notication of the button being pressed. So that's there now
2) I've changed it so that each form will resize to the size of the background image given to it, giving the ability to effectively make a skin for any size screen

What I'm planning on doing.

1) I'm messing about with the architecture so that anyone can write a new form. The whole thing is .Net based so you'll create a new form by subclassing of my type and then just putting the DLL in the directory with AutoTouch, Then you can reference the DLL in your skin file and it'll load up and work just great. This means that someone could easily add a DLL to navigate with another program for example. You'll also be able to call back into the main autotouch to do things like pause the currently playing audio (as the nav system does when it announces an upcoming turn) and call back to put up a keyboard or a choice screen as I have now, if you don't want to write your own. There are also several callbacks that will be available to you to help parsing skin files.

2) As part of #1 I'm going to pull out the MapPoint Navigation and make it's own DLL That can either be used or not, this will serve two items, one is to make it possible to use other nav systems, and 2) is to make it possible to maybe do an open source release of the core AutoTouch System. The thing preventing that release now is that I'm using a purchased GPS Decoder for the mapping stuff and I can't release the source code that uses that library because it's lisensced to me.

Does this jive with what people are expecting from this project now?

okay, so let's say you are doing 60mph on Interstate... you hit "Go to my places" and then say "H", Home pops up... you hit enter... and voila... the system tells you to take a left/right onto a small road, then get onto the interstate... this happens about 99% of the time, based on what available roads are near the interstate... it is really annoying and you have to recalculate several times to get his work as planned...

any tips/ideas on this?? I know this isn't an AutoTouch problem, but this is the only front end using this mapping program... could it be due to an AGPS setting??

I'm looking a them both right now, and except for MP being about 100mb's bigger, prolly for the added buisness entries, I just dont see it.

I was just wondering if making Autotouch use 'Streets' instead of map point might not increase its popularity since Streets only cost $30 bucks.
Add in a $50 usb gps and you got a kick *** gps that covers the whole U.S. and that is dirt cheep and works very well with touchscreens while driving.
The only thing that I would be interested in seeing changed right now would be the mp3 player. Maybe something that would list the songs that are on the playlist.

First one is to have the volume controls work if you keep the button pressed.

This can be done by setting a timer for the onclick or possibly the mouse down event that as the timer loops it increases or decreases the volume. Then stop the timer when the click event, or mouse down event ends. This will allow for making larger changes in volume without having to keep pressing the vol + or vol - keys.

Second one is how about a clock in the area where the music controls are that is visible throughout. For me the car computer is my only means of looking at time in the car, and this would be what is on a standard head unit.

Third one is set the map objects text property a little larger street names aren't that readable from the drivers seat. Or offer the different sizes as settings.

Then last is to have a key that jumps to the next "CD" so to speak. Where you have the Next and Prev button, if there is more than one CD allow skipping to the next one. Again this is similar functionality to what a head unit would allow. So if you load an album from your library then load another, these buttons would move forward and back through the albums.

Again this software is great, and hopefully these comments help with ideas. As I said in the other thread, this is a great interface and if you want any help and don't mind it being in VB as opposed to C let me know I'd be happy to help.

For the kind words on AutoTouch I'm pleased you're all enjoying it. Rest assured that I'm not leaving it to rot right now, I've been working on the video module and have seemed to have hit a bug that I'm having a bit of trouble working around, but it's in the works. I also have a plan for how to make it completely modular so that you folks could write add-ins that would work with say IGuidance or one of the other nav packages if you wanted. So that will be coming.

The other item I'm working with is possibly using a different GPS Parser which might end up being slightly more accurate!

The biggest obstacle is my day job which often has me so busy I have limited time to work on this stuff!

It's coming though!

just wrapped up a 2000 mile journey this past week... AutoTouch is absolutely the cleanest well setup software that I have tried to date. I love how you can use a cheaper mapping software and still have all the results that were expected... I downloaded it just to say I had tried it, but I totally see myself holding on to this one...

I was thinking that maybe a module type setup might be a good direction to head. I am by no means a programmer, but was thinking that if you setup some guidelines and then included the "packages" in the download then you'd really be onto something. I would love to see XM, but I don't need DVD playback... so for me, I would just pick the items I wanted and then have those particular "packages" installed. Then you can keep control of the software and have other contributing to the programming. This is just a suggestion and I will be more than willing to contribute financially and testing.

Keep up the good work, I am excessively impressed. Ease of use could not be any easier and my system worked flawlessly...

Is there any way to play videos? Half of my music library is in mpg/avi/wmv, I was wondering if there is a way to play the videos (not just audio from the videos). If it's not in the current release, will it be in a future release?

I was also wondering if there is a way to display the filename instead of the ID3 tags for the audio. All of my music files are nicely labeled "artist - title.mp3". Only about half have complete ID3 tags.

Keep up the good work, this is one of the best front-ends I've seen so far.

Hi,

I've but a new version of autotouch out on http://www.sarinarts.com/autotouch.htm for you to play with. I've fixed many bugs, and sped it up a bit. Also the settings screen is now active, it allows you to turn on and off map rotation, voice navigation, and pick skins.

This app is incredibly easy to skin, with many options (check the web page) Zorro has already done one skin for it that looks really cool, so please check it out and let me know what you think

System Requirements: Windows XP, with Media Player 9 (or 10) and Map Point 2004.
