    sync from other sources?

any chance you could make it possible to sync from, say, a CD or USB thumb drive as well?

the general idea I had was that any time a CD or USB thumb drive was inserted that had music files in a SPECIFIC folder (something like "mp3box_sync") it would automatically copy them over to my music directory on the hard drive. since it could use a specific folder, it shouldn't have any problems ignoring other files.

just a thought, and I asked here because it would be nice to be able to run just ONE program to handle all my synchronizations.
But don't take it from me! here's a quote from a real, live newbie:

This is a neat idea. Not only can you sync music, you can do things like automatically upgrading your software.

yeah, didn't even think of that. maybe also give the option to run a specific batch file if it exists within that directory, after copying files. then you could do pretty much anything with it.

my main inspiration was that I don't have a touchscreen yet, so transferring music to the computer while in the car, rather than just bringing the hard drive inside and transferring it directly from my desktop computer, is enough of a pain to be not worth it at all. but if i could just toss some music on my USB keychain drive, or burn off a cheap CD-R, then go out in the car and stick it in and have it all done automatically, that would be much easier. (it would be very good for times when I was at school, where the parking lot is nowhere near a wireless network, I could just bring music with me on the way out, instead of having to go out, get the drive, come back in, transfer music, go back out, hook it back up, and then finally leave)

Seems easy enough to write something like that. Have it poll every couple seconds to see if certain drive letters have valid media (or maybe you can trigger on an insertion event?), then search for an appropriately named folder. If its "mp3_sync", copy it to c:\mp3s, if its "movie_sync" throw is in a movies folder, etc. I would definately like this feature.

Btw, way off topic, but what exactly does the magnetic trigger mod on an Impulse do? (former Shocker owner)

yeah I'm sure I could pull it off easily enough but that's just one more program to keep running... if it could all be done in the EZSync program that'd be more efficient.

the magnetic trigger mod just replaces the trigger spring with two magnets... you can set it up opposing (trigger forced forward by opposing magnets) or attacting (trigger pulled forward by attracting magnets, very "clicky" feel as magnets release from each other) I have them set up as attracting, because I didn't get enough force out of them opposing, and don't have much space for larger magnets.

I've done some preliminary work on this and it's definitely achievable. I can easily detect when a USB device is inserted or removed, so I can trigger EZSync client to copy files across when that event is recognised.

I'm guessing you won't want files to be copied every time you insert the stick as you might be putting it in there for other reasons, so we'll need to work out the best way of telling it when and when not to copy. I can go with your folder idea, but other options are welcome too.

No promises on a delivery date but it is on the list.

I would definitely want at least an option to use the folder idea, because I always keep random stuff on my USB keychain drive, so I would only want stuff in that folder to be copied.

and if it checks to see if the files NEED to be synched (modified, or new files present) then that would prevent it from copying every time anyway.

I've now implemented something in EZSync to cover syncing from USB Mass Storage devices (such as USB Flash drives) and CD's. Basic features are:

    1. Client now automatically recognises an inserted USB Mass Storage device or other volume (eg CD). If a (name configurable) directory exists on the volume, then a sync is carried out. I've used a simple directory structure to allow files/directories to be directed at different drive letters.

You can copy stuff over manually to your removable drive, using windows explorer, or:

    2. EZSync server is now capable of automatically recognising USB Mass Storage devices or other volumes (such as CD's) when they are inserted. When a new volume is recognised, there are three possible options: Do nothing, ask whether to sync, or sync automatically. 'Sync' here means copy files from the source directories on your home PC to the storage device, so that it can later be inserted into the Car PC. I've added a new sync type of 'Removable Media'. Only directories configured as this sync type are copied over. This means that should you so desire, you can use both wireless and removable media syncs concurrently.

If files are already on the media, or are already on the Car PC during sync, they won't be copied. Like the rest of EZSync it uses last modified time to determine whether a file is newer.

As part of this I've also put a configuration option in to disable wireless syncing for those that do not have a wireless network. Syncing via removable media only supports the equivalent of 'cumulative' in the wireless context.

I'm going to put a release together soon as I have one or two fixes to put in as well. Maybe this weekend. I will post full details of how it all works on the website once I've produced the release. Need to do a bit more testing yet probably.
