Thread: Molding clear parts

hmmmmmmmmm, wonder if you could make a fiber glass mold of your car, then use this to make a clear molded sub box... or would it be no where near strong enough?

i don't think the fiberglass resin itself would give enough structural integrity to actually make a subbox out of it... as for other fiberglass parts that aren't load bearing, go for it... but for a subbox i would say no go.

...it uses fiber glass resin? I thought this used a different type of resin "casting resin", thought it may have been stronger, and yeah, no way is fiberglass resin strong enough for...... anything, lol

ugh, guess my post didn't go through bleh. i just wrote a long response to that. But working with standard all purpose fiberglass resin, the fiberglass matting adds the strength paired with the resin itself, using JUST a type of resin to itself with no structure i really wouldn't trust it


then again, i honestly have never worked with Casting resin, so i'm not 100% sure how that would work out. I jsut re-read the post and realized it wasn't any type i've ever worked with

i've actually used that exact resin and it's tough, not tough enough to make a box nor is it cost effective but for smaller parts it works great. i recommend using smooth on for your molds since it's so easy to work with then use that same clear resin for your clear part (it's pretty cheap compared to smooth-on's clear resin) you can also buy dye to change the color of your parts.

i agree... that would be a very nasty sub box... completely see through... and when you blow your sub, you can get a nice smoky mix in the subbox that you can see


we had this kid come in with his sub one time, completely blown in a MDF box with 1wall plexi, he messed up the install and was like "Is this sub bad?" All you could see was smoke...
