    Roof console for Jeep Wrangler

In looking to improve the installation of my carputer in my Jeep I looked around at what others were doing. I thought about installing it in my dash, but, this is the second car this carputer has been put in. I want something that I can move to a new jeep if I have to. I also wanted something that would tell thieves that “This is going to be a pain to steal”. So I decided to make a list of requirements.

    Theft resistant
    Weather Resistant
    Minimal modification to the Vehicle.
Easy to remove and work on (with proper tools)
    Self Contained unit.
I looked around the site and the web but could not find exactly what I was looking for. Some were close, but nothing exact. Placement in a Jeep Wrangler is limited. You do not have a trunk. The Center Console is too small plus it would not give me the weatherproofing I am looking for.
Going up is the only thing I could do. An overhead console would be best.
I decided on custom fabrication. Wood, Plexiglas, and Fiberglass would give me the Water Resistance, but would not have the strength that I am looking for. Aluminum would work but it is somewhat difficult to work with for what I want to do. I decided on 16 Gauge steel. This would give me the strength I was looking for. Additionally I would be using Tamper resistant Fasteners to screw down the covers for extra security.
To work the steel to the shape I need I had to have the following metal working tools:
    Fluxed Wire Welder
    Metal Bending Brake
    Die Grinder
    Angle Grinder
I started with the sides and began to work from there.

I will post more as I progress on the project.

This is similar to what I envisioned doing for mine, except I was planning on building it into the full cage that I want to have installed. Enclose the two tubes that run to the front part of the cage.

    Nice work so far.

Well I after trying to use the 16 gauge steal I scrapped the box and restarted with 1/8th inch. Not only is it stronger it is easier to weld and I can drill and tap the holes for the board mounts. I have a flexable PCI extender and a PCMCIA to PCI adapter on order that should be here on Friday. Here are a couple of pictures to let everyone see where I am at.

I will have another update after the weekend.

1/8" thick stock might be kinda heavy for an overhead console.

As long as it's bolted to the roll cage, shouldn't be a problem.
    Failure is not an option....

It's installed by default on every version of Windows.

i doubt it would weigh enough to make it tippy on the trail. and this way it can stop small caliber bullets!

looks awesome, i look forward to your finished product.

I don't know about anybody else, but I would really appreciate , more pictures, detail, & specs of the pieces you are using. I also have a TJ, as well as a 72 blazer that I would like to adapt this idea to. Even though both projects are a ways off, I'd love this to be a reference for future use.

    Thanks in advance,
    Buddy
