Thread: How do I build up ABS?

yea, find a sheet of abs. local plastic supply houses or hobby shops might be able to help.

take the whole piece out and use painters tape. Place the dash piece face down, level the area. Place the screen in the exact position you want it in the gap. Pour ABS sludge around the bezel into the gap between dash piece and bezel. Make sure you pour slow to avoid air pockets. Let dry and sand away. That's how I would do it at least.

Man, I would have to disagree with this. The abs sludge WILL warp your bezel, I know, I just worked with it. I read a thread on this site about Dynatron and went that route and it worked great. I used ABS sludge to make a mold, carved it out and then used Dynatron to bond the 2 together.

i agree, the abs sludge dissolves the existing ABS, and warping can occur. I'd use a sheet of abs cut to fit. Then if you wanted to bond the abs to the existing abs, a very small amount of sludge around the joint, applied like glue, would dissolve the abs and the acetone or MEK will evaporate, and the abs would be chemically bonded together.

Just get a cheap soldering iron with some abs sheets. Cut the sheets into thin pieces and plastic 'weld' everything together. It is structurally sound, I dont understand why people even bother with that sludge stuff

I use the sludge (actually commercial abs cement found at home depot, basically the same, just pre-mixed) to glue the pieces together, and fill small holes or gaps. For anything larger than a small gap, I cut the abs sheet to size, and glue with the sludge.

I saw that thread, I really like your work with the bezel. That is a good alternative as well. Do you happen to know the chemical properties of that stuff? I'm sure it bonds, but I still believe that the best thing to bond with ABS is ABS.

Right of course ABS to ABS would be ideal, but in terms of this epoxy putty, just the normal procedure should be followed in anything to prep plastic to have something adhere to it, with the putty, I usually take down the plastic with 50 grit, and hit it up with Bulldog Adhesive Promotor before applying the putty
