HOWTO - Making Mating Electrical connectors for OEM plugs

I just got a set of HID retrofits for my car, but the ballasts didn't have the OEM plugs and I can't find anyone who sells them without the ballasts.

So I fabbed my own. Seems like it might come in handy for someone here, so a link to the how-to for any one interested. (Also make a cradle for my boost phone in it). Turned out pretty well.

neat! i just need to figure out how to do that with all these little 20 and 24 conductor harnesses (harnii?) i have running all over the place. I thought about popping all the pins out and making a silicone mold, but it seems like a crap ton of trouble to go to especially when i'd have to desolder the part i need from a board. I like this though.

    Are they your own wiring?

Depending on the configuration, you might be able to find ones that fit, Tyco Electronics have a lot of them, for instance, most of the ones in my car are similar to the "AMP ON" line.

I didn't find any exact matches in Digikey, nor was I able to order directly from Honda, or even get a part number for that matter. I spoke with a company that makes a standalone engine management system for Hondas and they can only get the connectors in bulks of no fewer than 1000.

I can accomplish what I want by splicing in a molex/amp/tyco connector pair and using that for my project, and then i just have a pigtail with a factory end on it when/if i go back to stock.

It's a little extra work for sure. On a different subject - are you documenting your HID retro anywhere?

Ah.. Have you tried trying to find the harness itself on ebay? I found mine for like $35 USD which was a pretty good deal. Junk yard would probably be a good place to look as well.

Not too much to document, I bought a set already done, from another owner of the same type of car.

They're Audi RS6 Bi-Xenons. I am going to open them up again though and change a few things. You can see part of the projector and that bugs me, so need a new shroud, plus I have color matched reflectors in my current light and am going to swap them out for. Also want to paint the inner reflector black if I don't make a form fitting shroud. I also want to redo the harness that came with them.

Two places I can think of for HID stuff (remember, relatively new at this)

The owner has done a lot of lights for members of my car club (2gstratus.org) and an excellent resource are the forums on http://www.hidplanet.com , they have details on all types of projectors (they sell kits as well) and pinouts, dimensions, etc on the various projectors and ballasts.

my biggest concern is for aiming and alignment within the headlight assembly. I know you can aim the whole assembly at least up and down to a degree when it's installed, but I almost feel like i'd have to have some complicated jig to make sure everything is pointing right forward.

Not sure, to be honest, snowing here and have to figure out some stuff with the harness, I've fired them up, but not had them in the car. Though the previous owner of the lights had no issues with it, so I'm assuming factory aiming for these will be adequate (I hope).

I'm sure there is a bunch at planet hid forums on the subject.
