    Black Plexiglass Case

Well i made my first carPC case last year out of clear plexiglass, and it worked out ok. It did its job perfectly, but i made a few mistakes and it always looked like a big clutter under my seat. It was also a little larger that i had hoped so, with a microATX AMD64 board and a DSATX psu. So improvements were in order...

This time around i wanted to go smaller with an Intel D201GLY2 and better quality black plexiglass instead of clear. After lots of planning with google sketchup and fab work, its almost done. Still a couple parts i need to finish off/touch up/make permanent, like the piece covering the sound card. Here's the almost-complete result:

    next to the old one:

    PC components include:

    Intel D201GLY2
    Sound Blaster Audigy 4
    DSATX
    Toshiba 80gb 2.5" HDD

    measurements:

    29.5x23x5.5cm

Let me know what you think. Thanks

    I like it overall.

    Some suggestions:

If you have access to a laser try to cut the pieces from that so you can get solid 1 piece for each side with exact holes and even latches for putting sides together. I like making "jigsaw puzzle" type sqaures on the ends that interlock when pressed together on all sides. Sort of adds visual appeal as well as making it easy to glue and sturdy with more contact between pieces (not just 1 edge on 1 edge but 3 edges all up and down the edge.

And if you dont have access to a laser, you can get some shops to cut it for you really cheap. Sometimes free if you buy the plastic from them.

Also did you make those fan grills?

    Thanks!

Well, i dont really have access to a laser :P although that would be fun! and much easier than using a jigsaw, dremel, drill and sandpaper. But i like doing some hands on stuff, so i dont mind the process and the non-perfect result. If i were to start doing lots of these cases and selling them, your suggested way would be far superior, no doubt.

I use(d) acrylic cement meant for acrylic plexiglass. it essentially melts the plexi together and the connection is very very strong. To break off pieces (if i even try, only tried once), it usually cracks a bit in other places than the edge i want to separate. So im not too worried about strength.

The top two fan grills were off ebay. The one on the side was as well, but i had to cut it up with a dremel to fit the space needed.

Nice. I need to do more practice with plexiglass.

I tried the 'getting the shop to make it' deal. I wanted a single sheet made for my system in the back of my Grand Am with holes made for the amps. They wanted around $140. Needless to say, I didnt get it made.
