new to plastic fabrication,need help

hey i am wanting to do some plastic modding on my bumper cover.my question is can you bond two diff kinds of plastic without problems? the bumper is TPO and i want to use ABS sheet to fill some holes and dont know if that is a good idea,and what type of solvent ect would you guys recomend? thanks in advance for any info here as i am lost on this

edit,to more accurate i am filling the grill opening in a TPO bumper and need sheet plastic to cut and fill the holes that are about 3+8 inches.would abs work? and thanks for the link h3rk

Well you can use the fiberflex from http://www.urethanesupply.com to repair TPO, according to their instructional video, but I haven't tried it.http://www.urethanesupply.com/step3c.php

Duramix 4036 is supposed to be urethane for TPO repair, but that's for repairing, not adding a dissimilar material. If this was my project, I'd stick with h3rk's advice, and try Urethane Supply.

There's a tremendous amount of information on their site. If you still can't figure it out after you dig through their site, call them. They know their stuff; if anyone can tell you how to do it, they can. They'll have the materials you need, and they ship fast.

I think abs should work as well as anything for filling the hole. One thing to consider though is how flexible the abs sheet is compared to the bumper. I know that the fiber-flex will adhere to ABS, they say it will work with TPO, but there are very specific methods to use. This requires the use of a plastic welder. I've been playing with my new welder and the fiberflex some, it will adhere to problem plastics (I've tried it with PP, that stuff sucks). So a welder, comes with a small supply of fiberflex, some reinforcing mesh, sander/grinder, Urethane Supply's instructions, some practice, and then you'll have what you need to make the structural work. Then maybe some filler to make it presentable, maybe see if that duramix found above (and mentioned here: http://www.autobodysupply.net/articles.asp?id=135) will also adhere to ABS. Don't get too impatient, there are people who have more insight and information around, I know there's at least one around this forum, as I am by no means an expert. I would talk to a couple auto-body experts if I were you. There are great information and experienced pros in here, but this is, after all, a carputer forum.

i wasnt getting impatent,just bumping it up.sorry if i came off that way.i have been looking through all the links and have found many answers on my questions.and yes i will consult a auto body expert.just looking for info so i at least have a basic idea of what is involved.and if i still want to do the mods given how much technical problems that will arise.and i thought that this would be the site to look because of all the fabrication with plastics that i have seen,looked to be alot of people with heads on there shoulders,and once again thanks for the info
