very nice man
This is my first fab job so please be nice.....
This is a Lilliput 7" fabbed into a Ford F150 radio surround. Sorry, I don't have any build pics cuz my camera's memory card got lost somehow.
Thanks to all of the posts on this forum, I was able to get this this done without any problems. The steps:
- After using a dremel to make the opening in the surround bigger, I hot glued the spare front casing of the lilliput onto the surround
- I then used epoxy putty (Wal-Mart brand) to fill in the gaps and mold the shape
- Sanded with 80 grit using a sanding block (very important for straight, smooth sides and edges)
- Used more putty to fill in any major flaws
- Sanded again
- Used Rage Gold to smooth surfaces
- Sanded with 200 grit until smooth
- Primed with high fill primer
- Sanded with 200 then 400 grit
- Used the Bondo spot putty to fill any pinholes
- Sanded and primed again
- Sprayed on SEM texture coating and sanded with 400 grit
- Painted with Dupli-Color vinyl paint
- Sprayed on a few light coats of Dupli-Color clear coat
I will paint it again to cover up the minor flaws around the buttons and the IR cover. I was just in a hurry to get it into the truck (big road trip next morning). and the paint doesn't exactly match the rest of the dash or the Expy center console that I painted with the same paint.
I moved the Alpine 9886 and the Kenwood eq into the center console. The opening for the AC controls on the console was almost a perfect fit for the HU, just had to Dremel the sides and the inside portion of the console. I still have to mold and fill the spaces on top and bottom of the radio bezel of the Alpine in the center console for a more factory look.

very nice man
You did a very good job! Espesically for a first timer. Upon looking at your list of things you did, I was very impressed with what you used and your knowledge of how you used it. The only thing I would have changed would of been the hot glue, but seeing you backed it up with epoxy putty, you should be fine. I think you may have just used the hot glue to get the bezel into place so that you could putty it. The only reason I do not recommend hot glue is because it flexes and in time will causes cracks in the bondo, nonetheless I believe you should not have any problems since you used the epoxy putty over top.
Everything else looks pretty good. A tip for the buttons is to reinstall the buttons after primering and texturing. This will help bring any debris in the button holes to the top. Then you can just sand them down lightly to get it smooth again. Follow it back up with a light light light mist of texture and color coat.
SEM Texture is a real pain to use, over the course of 6-7 months I finally arrived at a specific technique I use to get it perfect, however I am not so sure I can let my secret out =)
Good job man!

Thanx!
By reading and studying posts from you and other great fabbers on this site I felt comfortable enough to give it a try.
Oh, and I did only use the hot glue to tack the bezel into place and used the epoxy putty on both front and back sides to "cement" the pieces together.
That texture paint is a pain to work with. I thought I had a bad can of it at firstbecause it didn't work as easy as it looked on some of your work. I sprayed, sanded, sprayed, sanded it all off, sprayed, primed, sanded, etc... it really started to p**s me off because when I thought I was doing good, a big glob would come out of the tip and ruin everything. So when you release that "secret" sign me up for a class.

As far as it blobbing up, that is something that happens with every can. Make sure to shake well and always spray it out in the air and that blob will come out everytime, I usually spray it onto paper so I can see the blob has been released and that the fine texture pattern is coming through. Do list mist coats from about 12 inches away and resist the urge to spray more heh.
Take a spray can cap and turn it upside down and put some paint thinner in it. Let your spray nozzles soak in there for a few minutes after every use to clean it out. Blow them out once you take them out of the thinner.
