Do you think it should be a flatter black?
You can always spray two or three primer coats while sanding in between, on top of the black paint to get a flatter look. Then wet sand again with 2000 grit for a more durable final finish if texture is not needed.

I did my black dash cover plate the same way. I find that having an ultra flat black finish in the end will make it easier to match the plastic-like dash finish by touching it up with Armor-All once the paint has fully cured.

Here it is illuminated with the screen, VU Meters and Griffin Powermate mounted...
(Cheap cam messed up the blue colour...it's not this pale)

As for the ugly, filled ashtray opening, I'm having this machined from clear acrylic (back painted black)...

The lower right rectangle is for my engine start/stop button...behind it is provisions for 2 blue LED's to light up the acrylic...
The top left square is for a pair of USB ports...
The green outlines are machined into the face for illumination, and the two small circles over the switch mount are status LED's...

The REAL trick will be to locate the original HVAC controls into the glovebox...I basically have to extend the operating cables (2 pair) and the fan wiring loom to reach...

Hurry up... I'm anxious to see the installed pics!

Also, where did the VU meters come from?
Play with it, 'til it's broke.

I'm anxious to get 'er installed! lol

The VU meters came from this PC, 5.25" bay add-on audio thing...I can't even remember who makes it (Ebay), but it was practically a perfect fit...

Nice fabrication, looking good. I like the way you have incorporated the Griffin Powermate into it, but how do you keep it in place? I'm trying to mount one in my car and nothing sticks to the silicone base! Cheers.

The silicone base is a layer stuck to the bottom...
It can be peeled off, leaving the opaque nylon, which you can simply Krazy Glue...

Believe it or not, I used nylon toilet seat bolts from the hardware store to hold it in place thru the opening...
And Krazy Glue works awesome on plastic to plastic bonds!
