ABS sludge keeps bubbling up in heat

Hey all i gotta quick question about working with abs sludge. I'm using abs sludge on my aftermarket dash kit to add another piece into it (putting a custom iphone dock underneath the stereo). Anyways, I spend a good deal of time filling in all the little bubbles and crap and making it nice and smooth, let it set for a few days and then began painting. After i get it looking just about perfect, i put it into my car and within hours the abs has bubbled up and it looks like hell. Is there something that can be done to prevent this??

    thanks for any tips

    Sure!

    Don't use it!

Most likely the ABS plastic is expanding with the heat and creating those bubbles in the paint as it releases air.

ok... well what would you recommend using in place of it? From everything I read, it seemed like bonding abs with abs was the best way to go because it prevented any cracking and made a permanent bond.

cool... i've got plenty of that at work so i'll give that a shot. But what would i use as a "body filler" to make the surface nice and even? I'll post pics later on to make this a lot easier to explain...

Yea, The body filler goes on after the CA Glue has been sanded down to be somewhat even. The filler fills in little pits and dibs.

Are you priming the surface before painting? I'd bet that it's not that the plastic itself is bubbling, but it's the paint that's bubbling on the surface of the ABS plastic.

thats what i was thinkin too. try some kind of plastic bumper repair or some automix/duramix/fusor etc. that stuff will hoild damn near any plastic. make sure to get the right kind for your needs.

I just used some regular abs glue on my bezel and it works fine. the stuff you get at home depot or lowe's. Of cours like they have all said you just use it to get the initial structure of your bezel and use a little body filler to give it that clean look after sanding it down.
