Thanks for the tip, I will be trying this out in the next couple days.

He's a little update: I did a deep cleaning of the interior of the truck today, which included removing the PC for cleaning and some up-grades. The ASUS AT3N7A-I is going in!!

This is going to be a nice upgrade, I am doubling my Ram, Processing power, Video capabilities and video outputs. This has a dual head video card (nvidia ION) so I am thinking about installing a monitor for the backseat passengers. What a perfect time to try out a new HDMI Lilliput I will be running windows 7, first time in my carPC history I have used anything but XP. Want to play with the sleep modes of win 7. I also have a sata 32Gb SSD I want to use. In addition to that stuff I want to get amp_control program working to switch on and off the amp. Also may be using a new USB cable version of MitchJS's HD radio cable.

Also I would like to add some panel mount USB's to the dash instead of having the cord poking out from under the console.

Stay tuned more pics to follow

Theres a USB cable for HD? I may go with that, the serial to USB isnt supported by Win Vista, Win 7, h3ll its barely covered with XP SP3. Wonder if there is a USB adapter for XM. If not can anyone recommend a usb to serial that actually works with these devices?

@veikovx: Thanks for the ATX tip, the AT3N7A-I is compatible with the M2-ATX

@sporty_drew: You know how the IT business is, no news is good news lol. The PC has been working perfect for the most part, but I've wanted to upgrade the MoBo for awhile now, no in my cleaning frenzy I pulled the PC and decided to go for it.

@HiJack: The is a USB cable under development, I was going to beta test it for MitchJS. In response to the USB > RS232 adapters not working , this is not true. I'm running windows 7 just fine with an adapter so not sure, maybe you just have a cheapie or something?

In other news, bench testing and setup of the AT3N7A-I is well underway. I have made great progress with this board so far including getting the bluetooth stack working with my iPhone, and have successfully enabled hands-free phone over the PC system. I have also discovered that the X-Fi sound card is compatiable with the AT3N7A-I board, it does not have the bios hang the intel suffered from. So I am going to retain both the onboard via 7.1 and the X-Fi 7.1. It will, at the very least, give me more "line ins" which is perfect for the next item on the agenda which is Sirius radio. In addition to the HD radio, I am adding satellite radio capability also for the thrill of the hunt lol. Going to see if my factory Sirius antenna will work with the Sc-C1 module. So all in all I've made a lot of progress with the software today and will likely reinstall the new and improved setup tomorrow.

No, its the opposite, I have an expensive one, that comes with 4 serial ports. The problem is that they never made drivers for XP SP3, Vista or Win 7. To get it to work on XP SP3, I had to do all this crazy stuff. Can you point me to the one your using? Does yours have multiple ports, or would I need to buy 3 of them. Currently I have XM, HD Radio, and OBD2 on serial ports. Then I use AMP_Control which also uses a serial port. Its going to use the onboard port, so that leaves me needing 3 more.

Ok so the re-install went fairly good! I've been installing for a good part of the day, and had to run over to a clients house at 3, so I took it for a test drive and everything seems to be working very well. With the exception of the HD radio Hijack you were right the USB > RS232 turns the HD unit on but does not take control of it. For now I have disconnected the HD since I have the full Sirius package to play with. The factory antenna did work with the SCC1 tuner, but I was getting a ground loop noise in the audio. I added a beefier ground to the factory antenna wire which helped some but the noise was still there. So I just broke down and ran the wire for the new antenna included in the Sirius kit and bam crystal clear. I also noticed the cable that came with my SCC1 is really long, like 16', which passes audio through it, so I am looking for a shorter version to hopefully improve the sound even more. The X-Fi has been scrapped for now. The on board 7.1 chip set has a higher preout voltage than the USB soundcard, and sounds on par or better than the X-Fi so I am just using that for sound now. Had to pick up a couple gold plated audio connectors from radio shack but the system is bumpin again. Along with getting all that hooked up I also had to install drivers for the touchscreen and GPS , which worked out good. I used vista drivers, and am running win 7 ultimate. So far I am liking windows 7 for a carPC, it boots very quick, and along with the extremely fast ASUS bios, I'm happy with the improved boot time. Now I just need a good Mic as the hands free bluetooth works very well. For today and the next couple days, I am going to run the system without the center console in place to make sure everything stays stable while I work on adding some surface mount USB ports to the console.

That's how my day went, now I'm off to find a low profile PCI serial card ;D

Oh yeah, Id like to add I am also impressed in the video upgrade in going from a intel 945 chip to an Nvida ION. The screen has some much more color and depth now.

    Edit**

    Just ordered this:

Recommended by MitchJS to work with HD serial cable.

Anything other then Intel GPU, will be better. Thats why I love Zotac's mobos, they love nVidia, so thats all they have on their boards.

I feel bad about the USB-Serial adapter. Kinda like I jinxed it. Does your USB-Serial have a FTDI chipset. I think Mitch said thats what works best, but I am not sure if he meant from a Win XP or Win 7 stand point. I wish I had a copy of Win 7 on hand, then I can test mine out. It turns out I was installing it wrong. Once I understood how the drivers installed, it worked perfect. Mine came with a utility to run data tests and what not and all passed on XP. It also come back on after hibernation, only thing is it like resets itself to start because when I come out of hibernation, I hear the USB sound of disconnect then reconnect.
