Thread: Please help with me with some ideas.

Two suggestions:
(1) Tell us what you've considered already, and why those ideas seemed workable or not.
(2) Very few of us know your car well, so help us out with more information so we can come up with ideas: Where does the OEM nav unit get installed? How big is the Pioneer unit? What in the dash are you willing to sacrifice?

For instance, what are the two big slots at the top of the dash? Could they be replaced by the Pioneer in a housing? If you went on top of the dash like that, you could build a panel and housing to fit there. If molding a system like that is too far beyond your skillset, you could hire Nexson to build the panel once you tell him what you need. You handle the mechanical installation, and he'll make it look OEM.

Or, instead of losing the compass, relocate it to the top of the dash, and put the nav unit where the compass was. Sounds interesting . . .

Read through Nexson's threads for a clear explanation of fiberglass work. I've done a little of it, but he makes it look like something I'd like to try at a higher level, and he provides a materials list as he goes along. Read through TurboCad6's thread for a good explanation of plastic welding.

If you say that you're Fabrication skills are @ 0, then it's time for ya to learn.

As rdholtz said, read both turbocad and nexson threads and DIY, that's how I learned. The more you read, better repared you will be.

Also, since your on a small budget, be carefull and plan every single step of your project.

Thats the Touareg Navi, not very different from NON-Navi.


You'll have to ask yourself how you plan to route the audio
1- Keep OEM stereo
--> No much space for a screen IMO, but its doable, maybe on top of dash but it may be a little high to reach for a touch screen...

2- Tap into OEM AMP and use OEM speakers for CarPC

Here's some advice:

You should start exploring your dash. How is it inside? Is it too tight? How is the overhead console fixed? Plastic tabs, metal tabs or bolts? Get the service manual and remove it, to see how it is inside. See if there is a sub-roof where you can attach some support.

How is this Pioneer unit in the back? How many alternative mounts you have? Is it like a Xenarc, Vesa or a small GPS? depending on what you find there you may have to adapt a support there, like I did in my FX.

How stock do you want to look? You can hang something like this in your overhead console:



Only upside down, if placed overhead. There are some arms that allow movement up/down, and from side to side, this can be useful to fight glare. You can pull some wires from the roof somewhere, or run them until your GPS antenna (does it need one?)/cig lighter.

Same thing if you decide to go on your dash. You can use an adapter such as these, or go for an OEM look. Does the Pioneer case match your dash? If it's good enough as it is, I would use the top of your dash, remove those cubby holes and think about fabricating an enclosure.

Start exploring man, and post pictures, this will get the guys interested and more better opinions will be posted.
