Tape your phone up really well, then just the body filler along all the sides. You will get much nicer lines aroundyour phone. Epoxy putty is great for structure, but you have to use the body filler to tweak the fine lines ;)

Awesome advice, I did tape up and epoxy puttied around it, but it was difficult to get even lines around it, I will definitely tape it up again and shape the filler around it.Quote:

Yea, Pop pictures up where you might have questions. I am always on here, so you will get answers pretty quick
Take the time to repair the area where the connector goes in, and get that straight. If that's what everything hinges on, fix it. Carve away the epoxy that's in the wrong place. It's worth it.
Then do the epoxy again and apply all the knowledge you've gained. Fill, sand, fill, sand . . . make it so Nexson is impressed. You can do that.
It'll take more time, but you'll love the result.
If your going to redo this project I'd get a ipod hard case and mold up to it.
Forget taping up your ipod and then prying it out later. Just get something which is already a finished product that is intend ed to do exactly what you need,.. slip you ipod in and out.
This way you can line in up, glue in place and start filling it up. The edges will be perfect because its pre-manufactured

Then in July 2010, when the new iphone comes out (want to wait to see weather they change the shape and/or connector) when I will buy a new bezel from a scrap yard (this one is beat up enough it makes more sense to start fresh with less cuts) and with everything I've learned from this one make a new mold...
- using a hard case as you've suggested by cutting and attaching the doc (basically extending the doc) and cut of the top half inch

- place it centered with the entire bezel (more to the right towards the remaining vent)
- possibly fab in a Lilliput 7" touch in the double din and move the stereo single din head unit to where the car charge and ashtray is now
The 7" touch will only happen if there becomes some way to get touch screen input form the device to the iphone by then, so I can really make this sucker as CAR PC like as possible
I really want what Bugbyte was going for before he diverted towards teh whole cloud computing angle. I'm getting there with the fabed mount, ODBII, bluetooth ipod controls I will be mounting onto steering wheel :)
ok so here we go, about to start round two. Here she is sanded down to primer and ready to get some filler to...
- smoothen out the transition form putty to plastic
- straighten out the bottom line under the iphone dock
- get a nice clean even lip all around the iPhone
(I will mask iPhone, spread filler around edges, let dry and pull out masked iPhone)
I will take my time with the finishing this time as sanding down the primer was more painful then most of the freaken finishing process itself! banghead

2 part Bondo body filler (yes this is my first time ever using the stuff and I made a mess :p)
- but i think it should be ok, since i will just have to sand a bit more since it's gobbed on too think, and i will...
- add more filler on the bottom line if needed to straighten (a little build up on left side maybe)
- add more filler around the edges of the iphone mold, when the iphone is taped and in place
? for the gurus, I was thinking of using saran wrap on the iphone instead of masking tape so I can see the silver outline on the front of the iphone to make it much easier to shape around it cleanly and even!
- I'm nervous about saran wrap, will it protect my $800 CAD iphone enough?
