    iPad Headunit Install

Hey guys, I'm just starting fabrication (I'm a beginner, never done this type of thing before, but am tackling it anyway!) of a fascia piece to fit my iPad in as a head unit.

I started with a cardboard mould and bondo'd it up to sit kind of snug, but it wasn't strong or durable enough to do anything. So this week I'm starting on the frame with plywood, and I'm thinking of using bondo afterwards, would this be a good method of attack? Or should I be going for epoxy's and/or glassing?

Any tips for a beginner? As soon as I get the wood it will be documented in this thread.

    -RDCTBR.

More detail about the car, pictures would help gather some interest. Previous experiences and showing what you learned would also help.

AFAIK, bondo is not a good idea to use it a car. I think it breaks and it does hold well over time. Have you heard about plastic welding? That's the direction I would go first, if I want to fully integrate with the OEM dash.

If you use fiberglass I would think you would use automotive paint over it and make it looks like those show cars (i.e. not oem like at all)? Fine if that's what you're aiming for, but you should be clearer.

    Just my .2c

eh, the lack of posts just means that their afraid you'll do better then they can do ;P

i saw your post originally, but figured i would leave it for the more seasoned expert that actually did some dash fab(i have never done any fab work to a car...)

bondo is a very stiff substance, esp. if used on a flexible base like a dashboard/radio bezel..

the common approach seems to be to find a similar plastic/material as what the original part is made from, and add/subtract what is needed for your design, then finish with the new, same-type platic.

the idea behind this is that all of the part, both the old component, and the added material will then have the same expansion/contraction characteristics, so none of it will break and crack later on..

and here is a better link then bugbytes(funny part is that it's found in the top part of this fab section-- just below the button you had to click to make a new topic): how to make a factory bezel
