Thread: Custom Garmin 3790 Install ??

The problem your going to have with this is disassembling the cradle that provides power to the gps. One thing you might try is checking out the top of the steering column and maybe custom fabing a piece similar to that in which the gps can flip up out of and then lay flat when the vehicle is off.

Getting power to the unit is really not even a concern I have. The unit hooks up from the bottom and I can cut up whatever I need to from the original dock to get power to the unit. I'm mostly concerned about wether or not it will look good in that location. I'm on the fence I like the idea a lot but after I photoshopped the pics i'm not sure I can pull it off. Your idea is interesting though do u know anything about assembling a motorized unit that I can use to flip the up? Any links to similar projects I could look at?

I actually did something similar on my S2000 with a 1000 series Nuvi and it definitely is nice having a dedicated screen. The 3790 should also work with the ecoRoute HD module so you would get another set of gauge under your factory gauges! I like your idea and think your best bet would be to purchase an extra steering column top cover, then cut a hole in the top to create a cradle with the power connections, a complete pocket to contain the nuvi, or a hinged cradle so you can flip the nuvi down when you leave the car.

I always wanted to replace IC with actual LCD screen and put map there but then i wouldn't pass state inspection

Why not get an extra plastic piece like the one that covers the gauges in your car, then fabricate the GPS unit into it as flush as you can get it.It would look really OEM if done right, plus that way when you sell or trade your car in the future, all you would have to do is change the frames. I think you can pull it off!

for me evruthing is fabricared and GPS is runung on PC screen well i did a plugin to rn it si i definetly dont need extermal GPS

I think what he wants is his GPS right in front of him all the time with the gauges...and the PC screen in the dash once he gets around to his PC installation doing its own thing except for GPS since he doesn't like the current PC software available, nor waiting for the PC to boot....I'm guessing of course!

PS: My GPS is on the screen also(S&T's with RR using the DFX5 skin)

I was waiting on MS long time now i'm loyal to Garmin Mobile PC
I think maps size on external devices is too smal I like map on my 8.3" display

I couldn't agree with you more about the screen size(7" screen in my install). Was going to use Garmin PC, But I got a deal on the S&T's on ebay(only paid $25 dollars for the software with GPS receiver). I do however like the Garmin PC interface better(especially the 3D view), but S&T's has excellent(if not better) map coverage. Plus if the receiver fails, I can replace it with almost any other GPS receiver...not locked in like with Garmin PC if I got it with the receiver. Cost was the deciding factor. Gonna check out your worklog if I can find it(would love to see you set up)!!
