Bondo Fiberglass Body Filler

Hey guys,

I'm new to the hobby, but fairly solid with computers. I want to build a custom enclosure for my carpc, making kind of a fancy custom enclosure. I actually have a can of bondo fiberglass body filler that I purchased a few months back to repair a bumper. Found out the bumper was urethane and not fiberglass so it wouldn't work. I never used it, it's still sealed but was too lazy to go back to return it.

Question is, will this material work to create a fiberglass enclosure using the traditional methods of making a mold, fleece? Anyone have experience using this material? Might as well use it and not let it go to waste...

No you will need fiberglass resign and then after you shape it and need to smooth it you can use the can of bondo

Surely you have some old PC cases lying around? That's what I use for any pieces of sheet metal I need. I recently built a custom case for my truckputer by cutting and bending some into the size I needed.

Cool thanks for the information. I'm a newbie but getting into the hobby. Done lot of installs on my car and friends cars so i'm getting pretty decent. Never tried my hand at fiberglass, we'll see how it goes. There's tons of info on this site and others but any product recommendations on Fiberglass resin and where to get it? I live in DC so there's not many small shops that carry this kind of stuff... will Home Depot/Lowes carry decent products?

Also seen a lot of people using fiberglass cloth or mat. Is this necessary for something thats not really going to take any weight? Just using it to make an enclosure for the CarPC. Don't want to spend a whole lot of money because if I fail, then I'll make an enclosure out of plexiglass or some other material.

I do have the old case but it's kinda heavy and bulky, I want to make something a little more sleek.

Right now I have 2 subs in a custom enclosure in my '04 G35. The fit perfectly against the back wall of the trunk. I want to make a sleek enclosure to place directly in front of the subs and will be the centerpiece of the trunk.

Te best resin in the industry is US Composites in Florida which can be ordered from their web site. B440 seems to be the resin of choice for what these types of projects. They ahve alot of other cool stuff on their site too, so have alook around.

Get some good sanding blocks as well like Motorguard brand. Try to stay away from anything with the word Bondo on it, your quality of work & level of frustration will improve.

Try to pick a nice day so your project can go off outdoors without smelling up the garage! Most of all have fun and make sure you wear a mask & gloves.

Phil thanks for the tip I'll definitely check it out.... although i'm not in as cold of a place as canada... i am in 18-20 degree weather now.... nice days are too far out..... garage is where it's gonna have to be maybe with a heat fan blowing out the fumes lol

If it's a detached garage, of course, no issue, but if it's atatched to the house, especially like mine where there are 2 bedrooms over the garage, trust me, it's going to get nasty.

If you built yourself a booth out of abs pipe and plastic walls that could be folded up when not in use and added fans, vents with the exhaust outside, it might be OK.

I have painted in the garage as well as done glass layup and trust me, the resin is 10x worse that the paint and last alot longer while it goes off.

It depends how large the project is too, I just did my console and that was 3 gallons of resin in about 5 layups and outdoors was the only answer. And yes the weather got cold here too about 3 weeks ago so it's just sitting now.
