You don't want friction or you'll quickly mark the unit. You want to felt all surfaces in contact with the unit. Felt won't allow it to slide out and won't mark it.

As I said before, make a back plate, sides and front plate out of alloy or acrylic (laser cut), line the insides with felt and hey presto.

As for the rotation, I would look for some LCD brackets and see if there's anything I can use from stock, there usually is.

i was talking about using the plastic for friction in the rotational portion only-- i agree that you do not want too much friction where the xoom slides in..

Okay so I managed to run across almost everything I need pre-fabricated!

I'm going to get the following:
    Dash kit

I will have my installer basically fill in the double din gap with a mountable surface.

I'll then install this adjustable mount to the double DIN:

This mount will attach to a Padholdr (see attached image).... I just found these for my Motorola Xoom.

I'll have my installer modify the Padholdr and add a power connector + usb(audio). I don't think we'll use the dock since its too large and would require too much modification. I expect to have them fabricate a usb+power cable directly into the Padholdr.

Should end up looking something like this

They'll also install a small amp and the JL volume control you guys recommended earlier.

What do you guys think? Do you foresee any issues with this setup?

You could fill the double din space with alloy plate cut to size and folded either side with some drilled out holes to run some securing bolts through. Wouldn't cost much at all. IMO you have no need for an installer.

Only one comment to make on the stuff you've picked, IMO that holder is far to bulky also as it mounts from the bottom, how high would that position the screen in the car? I think that would cover the vents?

the odd looking 'l' bracket in the bottom right corner-- the website says that bracket will put the mount in the center of the xoom, so the xoom will be centered in the dash.

Oh I see that the PadHoldr has it's own mounting bracket in the kit, I thought for a second that the one above that image connects directly on to the back of the PadHoldr.

I was under the impression the adjustable mount connects directly to the holder... I could be wrong. The padholdr does come with a bracket but I believe thats for attaching like so:

hmm, i wish they had a install guide on their site somewhere...

    some ideas:

on their site, in the accessories area, about halfway down, there is a "step-off plate" that might work exactly as you need it to(firm, but a slight amount of rotation)

then there are the varying lengths of adjustable arms-- though i think these might be too flexible for your mounting idea..
