How much would you expect to pay for iPad install

I am looking for something like this:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AHVm6WptQvg

I've found two local installers and I am going to get quotes this weekend.

How much would you say is a fair price for this kind of fabrication?

I have a Ford Focus 2005 ZX3. I've measured my tablet(Motorola Xoom) and its fits in the stock radio bezel width wise but not height wise. I also know they'll need to relocate the cigarette lighter.

If you need more details to get an idea of the fabrication involved, let me know.

Stock radio (which I have replaced with a computer + single din retractable screen.. not that it matters for the new tablet install):

Not sure, but when did Stephen Dorff start doing car stereo installs?

    to replicate it exactly?

first off, if i ever see a prius decked out like that near me, i will laugh so hard, i would need to pull over...

the jl cl-rlc volume knob their using retail for around $60+tax(i use 4 of them)

for the fabbing the ipad bezel, i would estimate around $1,000..

    my reasoning:

here's a thread with some estimated cost for a fabbed screen:
    http://www.the12volt.com/installbay/...927&TPN=1&PN=1

the reason i estimated more then the linked thread is because the ipad bezel is going to be more complex-- you not only need to make something smooth with the dash, but need to integrate the ipad charger cord, and the opening for the ipad.

after the little amount of fab work i have done so far, i would estimate that it would take around 2-3 weeks to correctly finish the bezel...

Okay, first off - I seem to recall you worked for Microsoft....right? :-)

Second, Soundman is about right. It took me 2-3 weeks to fab and install in my dash. Worklog is here.

I think 1K is a tad optimistic. Here is CA the best you could find would be a guy asking $80/hour - but $100 is more common. So if he spends 3hs sanding, you would pay $240.00 - I'm guessing they don't charge the time it takes the fiberglass to cure, still LOL...I would say at least 2K if not more (for OEM stock, but glossy type fiber glass which I reckon looks cheap, should be less), not sure if Seattle is cheap, the SF Bay Area is not.

Please come back to us with your estimates.

after i started thinking about it(i easily forget how much work one bezel requires), i was starting to think the same thing-- maybe a more realistic estimate would be nearer to $1,500/2,000?

a major factor is the experience level and the quality of work of the fabricator.

a guy fresh out of a car audio school might do it really cheap-- maybe around 700..

but a guy that has been doing fab work for years and has his own shop, and plenty of work referances is going to charge much more..

+1 it doesn't seem like there is much info online pertaining to rough costs for bezel work...

I have done / do work like that and unless you get ripped off for being an NBA player I doubt you would pay more than 5-750$ for that. That was a simple job, akin to some custom kickpanels. Find a reputable local shop and tell them what you want to do. I think you'll be surprised how cheap it is, especially in this economy.

lol, how'd you remember that... Lets pretend I'm installing it for a friend jk...

So I got a rough quote from a high end local shop (they had 3 Ferraris in the garage when i visited) and they basically want to fabricate a cradle on their CNC machine. It would be made of ABS(i think) plastic. They would somehow mount the cradle into the din slot. End result would protrude from my stock bezel a bit. They assured me it wouldn't look as bad as it sounds and judging by their work I believe them. They said this would take about 2 days which I think puts me at $1,200. I dropped the dock connector off and they're working on getting me a better estimate by tomorrow.

I stopped by car toys (since it was close by) and I wont get into their cocky attitude & trying to upsell me. Long story short they would modify my exiting bezel and fiberblass it more like what you see in the video I posted... He said $1300.

I am going to meet another guy this saturday or sunday. On the phone he said about $1000.

Functionality is top priority for me but at the same time I don't want it to look like I picked up a car mount from ebay. We'll see.

My other issue is I need a way to control the volume so I need a head unit somewhere. (no more space in the dash with the tablet there)

Looking at all the work you put in on the bug I see why this fabrication costs so much, in fact I'm surprised it doesn't cost more. Its hard to justify $1200 in fabrication for a $800 tablet in a 2005 Ford Focus w/ 100k miles. I'm still pretty sure I'm going to do it though. I need to replace my carPC & the tablet is perfect.

the jl audio cl-rlc that was used in the original video you posted works really good for this, and compared to headunits, is pretty cheap--$60(mine were $55 on ebay).. there are some headunits that are that cheap, but some could adversely affect the sound quality.. i wouldn't pay any less then about $150 for a decent, new head unit(and don't touch used ones unless you can hear them before buying)..

i did a review of the cl-rlc's a while back, and am still using them in my install. i have been very pleased with their performance, and they do exactly what they are supposed to(volume, and preamp control)..
